headache, nausea, moody, hot, difficulty sleeping, chubby, chubby chubby - even the neighbors have noticed! I was wondering if the IUD could have caused all of this, or if it was just my age, 42. After reading all of this, I'm pretty sure it's the "thing"

Hey all,
Just had the Mirena put in last Wednesday. Did not hurt at all (I was SOOOO scared that it was going to!). In fact, I literally didn't realize that she had already put it in. I had a TINY bit of cramping after. Nothing like pmsing or anything. And that was for like 20 minutes a little after I got home. I took some IBProfin and had not had any cramps since. Very minimal bleeding. I am breastfeeding so I am not sure if that plays a role with the bleeding.
So this leaves me with one question (well, just one that I want to post and get responses to)....
For all that had problems with the Mirena, did they start from the beginning? From the moment that it was inserted? I wonder if there is a link...well, honestly I am kinda hoping there is a link. It would ease my mind a bit and it would let all of the women who have problems from the get go know that it isn't for them and it could be removed right then.
Oh, and for those that had a problem with the acne, how long after the Mirena was inserted did the acne come into play?
Thanks in advance!

I have had the Mirena for 1 1/2 yrs now. Within the past six months I have started to develop acne, all the while my period was starting to fade less and less every month. Now, the acne is severe and the periods are completely gone. I'm just wondering if this is all related. I have scheduled a appointment with a skin clinic, and also called my gyno. I am waiting on a reply from the nurse at the gynos office to see if I need to go on to the skin clinic, or if I just need to get this removed. I have never had more then a pimple or two on my face at one time. Now, I have them completely covering my hair line, almost like a rash.

Hi..I am 22yrs old, I have a 29month old daughter. I had the Mirena placed a few months after her birth. The first one I had placed came out of place and I had to have it removed. I had another put in because I tried the shot and it made me an emotional wreck and gain too much weight. So my GYN decided it was best to put another one in. I had that done July 2007. I have been bleeding almost non stop ever since. A few days of non bleeding here and there but that's all. I finally got an appointment and went to a new GYN he checked for it and said that he couldn't find it. He sent me for an ultrasound. Well the ultrasound showed that it was still in place but not doing it's job. I had eggs on both ovaries and the strings are gone. Therefore my doctor recommended that I try something else. The only problem is he can't get it out without surgery. So I am scheduled for surgery on May 2nd. I just can't believe that I am gonna have to be put to sleep to have it removed. I have never been put to sleep in my life and I am scared to death. I also don't feel that I should be responsible for the surgery and doctor bills. What do you all think? Please reply back or email me at ******

Hi all.
I am really dis-heartened right now. I cannot seem to get this thing taken out yet. My husband and I are self-employedso we have to take out our own health insurance. Our ins. company said that side-effects are a "disorder of the reproductive system" and there is a six-month waiting period to have anything done and we have just gotten it. So I went to an after hours clinic that I called waited until today thinking I could get it removed. WRONG!!! :( Today they said they could not remove it. More over, naturally the doc there said that there was no way all these side effects were from the mirena. I was so upset.
To anyone who has had this taken out, how many of your symptoms have gone away? How long has it taken?
Please e-mail me at ****** or private message me and let me know your experiences with post-removal and side-effects that cleared up. I am ready to take action on this mirena as women need to be informed of the possible side-effects of this drug. I have been suffering for 1 year and 10 months.
Thanks for reading!

Hi, I'm at home resting after having the Mirena (I don't want to call it my Mirena because I don't ever want to see it again) surgically removed yesterday. After 2 kids, one with special needs, and being on the pill on and off for 20 years, I decided to get a Mirena inserted. My husband was not in support but said it was my body. He even told me he'd get a vasectomy but I went ahead. It was very painful to have it inserted, I almost fainted a number of times. What I didn't know at the time is at insertion the OB had perforated my uterus! When I went back a month later to look for the string, it couldn't be found. After confirming that I wasn't pregnant, I had an X-Ray. The X-Ray should the IUD in a weird place. I went back to the OB and I don't believe she was truthful with me. She said that the Mirena was in a high place in the uterus and had partially perforated the uterus but I still had birth control and not to worry. She said to come back in a few months. Needless to say, I did not and would not go back to her again. I went to a new wonderful OB, she took one look at the X-Ray and said, no way is this in your uterus and you do not have birth control right now. YIKES! Well, I am resting now and will miss three days of work because of this nightmare! The other thing that is so bizarre is that I go off the pill so I would not have any hormones added to my body. I was never told the Mirena had hormones. Glad to have this over with. Aloha, K

Ladies I just wanted to let you know that I just got off the phone with BAYER regarding the Mirena. To file a complaint it is advised that you call this number (toll-free) 1-888-84-BAYER (1-888-842-2937) for the Adverse Department. Please, please call to file a complaint so that they have to send it to the FDA and we can get this ball rolling for a recall since they never listed the horrible side effects that we have had to endure.Make sure you keep documentations of what has happened to you and take pictures as well just in case a lawyers office takes on this case. Please reply to this email so that I know that we are on the same wave-length.

I had my Mirena put in on the 21st January 08. I am constantly feeling nauseous! So I don't eat as much, maybe 2 meals a day and I am usually sick if I have any form or food and drink after 8pm. Despite this I have not necessarily gained weight (1lbs) but I have gained so much fat. I have never been this big. I don't fit my fat jeans I wore 3 years ago. I cant wear the jeans I wore 2 years ago. And all the pairs I lived in from last January (07) or even august do not fit. At all. Constantly bloated. I have itchy legs. Keep getting upset. (I rarely cry). Got a few spots, nothing terrible, but I never get spots. And I cannot sleep. My doctor has prescribed sleep meds for 6 days but thats it. I keep getting cramps, dull cramps... I had one hideous one once put in, then it was normal dull cramps. My body hair has got on darker... Problem is I forget pills, and depo hasn't works (also bad reaction to hormones (no implant, don't want it) I have got pains in my legs, but its not all the IUD

Hey everyone,
I am 27 year old mother of 2 girls 5 and 1. I got Mirena in June of 2007. At first I had no side effects. About 3 months ago, I started having extreme vaginal dryness and itching. I thought it was a yeast infection so I tasted it. Then it came back a month later but worse, so bad my skin in the top fold of my outer labia was cracked. It went away after 5 or 6 days, then came back again. I had my annual pap today and my doc said that it was not related to Mirena and could possibly be herpes!!! I don't have typical sores or blisters, just dry and cracked skin down there??? Has anyone else had these side effects. I have been married for 7 years to the same man. Can anyone help??

I've had my Mirena for about 15 and a half months and I am having it removed today at 2 o'clock. At first I had sharp pains when I would sit down and I felt like the cords were poking me and irritating me. My OB/GYN requires patients to come back one month after having it put in so he can check it and make sure it is still in place. At this visit he also trimmed the cords although he acted like he didn't believe me when I told him that I could feel them poking me when I sat down and that it hurt. At first I didn't notice any bad side effects, but I did have one good one: my periods stopped, but I still had occasional and sporadic spotting. I didn't think to look for any bad side effects because I got the device under the impression that it had no bad side effects. I thought it only had a rare complication of perforating the uterus, but since mine was in place at the one month check, I didn't think about anymore until I started thinking about having another baby recently. I went online to see if I had to have a doctor remove the Mirena or if I could do it myself, and I found out that it's best done by a professional because bad things can happen and then you'd have to go to the doctor anyway. Plus, I didn't want to hurt my chances of having another baby. While online I discovered this whole world of message boards where women were having a lot of the same problems I'd been having in recent months and they all blamed their Mirenas. Some claimed that their problems had gone away since having it removed. I never thought to link my circumstances to the Mirena, but when I saw how many women are having the exact same problems as me I knew that I needed to go ahead and get mine out ASAP. Here is a list of my side effects, and I've found other women have had them as well with Mirena: weight gain, bloated stomach, depression, short temper with husband and daughter, acne, low sex drive, spotting, cramps, constipation, and back pain. There may be more, but I can't remember them all right now. Some of them may not even be related to the device, but I've read of so many women with Mirena who are having or have had the same issues, so I suspect a link between my problems and Mirena. I hope this helps someone out there looking for answers. God Bless!

Has anyone had any sleep disturbances with Mirena? I have had horrible nightmares and wake up feeling really shaky and horrible, and still really tired. Maybe this isn't caused by the mrens, but I can remember when I was younger i used to get pre-menstrual insomnia, the night before I got my period...just wondered if there was a link with all the progesterone/progesterin. Also, people who have had mood swings, have you noticed if they are particularly bad at one part of your cycle? Mine I would have to say, are really bad a few days before bleed and 3 or 4 days into the bleed, when I feel suicidal.
I've still not taken it out yet. Maybe 'm being a bit stupid, but I'm so scared of getting pregnant-I'm still at uni-and I can't think of any non-hormonal contraceptives....cept maybe something I've heard of called the 'sponge'. Has anyone heard of this or used it/know where I could buy it in the UK?I'd appreciate any replies! Thank you

Oh my goodness. I have had this thing for almost two years now. I feel so much better about myself after reading these reviews. I have went to the eye doctor because I was sure I had a tumor behind my eyes. I have had terrible headaches, blurred vision (he decided to change my contacts that i have worn for 12 years), extremely irregular bleeding, hair loss, acne (that I never had as a teen), and awful mood swings. I have my next yearly exam scheduled and am seriously going to discussing this. A friend of mine talked me into getting it because she loves hers. NOT ME!

Well, I am not the type to post things on line but I'm so angry and disgusted with the whole medical and pharmaceutical industries for promoting this product FALSELY. I got the mirena 5 weeks ago and am having it removed in two days- and counting. I am extremely anxious and depressed. I feel "raw"- like I want to cry for absolutely NO REASON. I just gave birth to a beautiful boy two and a half months ago and have a lovely 15 month old boy as well. I need my mental health for these babies and MIRENA has taken it away. I was told (as most women who are posting about Mirena complaints) by my doc that there would be no side effects despite me telling him that I did not do well on the pill. When I had to go to the psychiatrist because of how MISERABLE I felt, she called the ob-gyn and he said it was "absolutely not" the Mirena- leaving me to feel like a basket case. Fortunately I looked on line and realized I AM NOT CRAZY and I KNOW MY BODY better than all these doctors. I had read about Mirena before getting it inserted but only on their website- obviously heard no horror stories there. I wish I would have read websites like this one before having it inserted. Anyhow, NOBODY is going to tell me that what I feel is NOT because of Mirena- I KNOW IT IS. I am having this awful thing removed and no doctor will persuade me to "try it a little longer." They can say it's not the Mirena but we all know the truth and the truth will prevail eventually.

This registry is a place to share positive or negative side effects of using Mirena. If you directly experienced a side effect while using Mirena, then we encourage you to enter it here. Please note that entries here are the experiences of individual users, and in no way means that you or anyone else will experience the same side effect, since the same medication affects people in different ways. Please always contact your physician.

Thank goodness it is not all in my head. For the past year, I have been feeling as strange as the comments I have just read. Life is hard in the first place, but since having this IUD, life has been hard and very overwhelming. I have had constant mood swings, at least 3-4 days out of the week. Not only do I feel extremely nauseated 10 days before my period, even after it has come and gone, I feel nauseated again a week later. I had hoped that this new method of birth control would give me new freedom to have relations with my husband without being overly concerned about getting pregnant due to the less likelihood of the device failing. Boy was I wrong. I don't even think about sex. Nothing for the most part that he does turns me on. I can't even concentrate on feeling sexual when we are having sex. I just want to hit him or flip out on everyone. I feel a flush of anger go through my body that makes me think of very dangerous ideas, such as harming myself or others that are not really doing anything to deserve my anger. I have been very paranoid about everything and feel that I can not trust anyone, especially when I am telling them how I feel. I think that they just think that I am crazy. I have had extreme pain in my back near my spine, which I had thought before reading your comments was perhaps a side effect from the epidural I received during my child birth. I also have extreme pain in my sacral and hip areas that I never had before. My stomach is bloated with more stretch marks than I had when I was pregnant, my feet hurt. And I have an uncontrollable hunger at times. My short term memory is passe'. In fact, I took off my engagement and wedding rings in the house and can not for the life of me remember where I might have put my engagement ring. I am going to have this thing removed as soon as I get on my husband's insurance, before I go completely mad and hurt myself or my family. In closing, who cares if our doctor doesn't believe these things are not side effects. The truth is that God created all of us with common sense to know if something is blatantly wrong with us. We need to be wise and take care of our bodies and minds. This is something that God expects us to do. We have to live up to our obligations and commitments to our families like we promised we would when we got married.zfcII.
