Hello everyone,
Can I ask if anyone with type 1 diabetes has had any adverse effects wtih the Mirena in regards to blood sugar/ insulin?
Have just had one inserted a week ago and it is still painful and from reading these posts it is worrying that this pain won't go away.. but am wondering about the effect it has on me as a diabetic - doctors say next to no effect as it is a LOCAL hormone and so not circulating... but from these posts listing nausea, depression and weight gain, these are all side effects of hormones circulating the body.... Any one have any answers in regards to this?
Thanks

I have experienced most of the side effects everyone has posted below. I had been request to have my tubes tied since I had my daughter at 22. But because I was young and not married, they refused. I have Type 1 diabetes and they still would not approve my request. I had the Mirena placed in October 2007 and experienced side effects almost immediately. Now that I'm 27 years old and unable to take the pill or cope with the IUD, they will finally tie my tubes. Pre-op is tomorrow, removal and surgery in August.
My question is, if a woman decides she doesn't want any more children, why should her marital status or number of existing children have to do with it? I don't want any more children, period.
Good luck to those of you that have this placed, but as you can see, many of us have not been to successful.

I had my Mirena inserted in July, shortly after the birth of my second son. Having Antiphospholipid Syndrome, Type 1 Diabetes, and Lupus, the doctors wanted me off estrogen birth control pills. Not sure if we want a third child, thought Mirena was the way to go. I am 33 and back in the college days I was on the Depo shot and had horrible acne, mood swings, breast tenderness, and nightmares. A few months ago I started noticing the same effects with the Mirena. Nightmares, acne, but most annoying, no sex drive whatsoever, and extreme snappiness to my husband and children! I feel like how you get the week before your period....I feel depressed like that EVERY week....like "blah", can't seem to snap out of feeling blue. Not sure what to do. I wonder if Copper IUD's are any better since the evil progesterone is the bad culprit? I may just try to see if the Rheumy and OB will let me go on B.C. pills for just a couple more years....by then I should know if I want one more baby and if not, then I can get sterilized. My OB did say no one has ever complained to her before about these effects. But, I know simply b/c the Depo Shot, that the things I am feeling are real and from the Mirena and not just a modd disorder.

I got my Mirena in about 20 months ago and almost immediately my life started going downhill. I got moody, depressed, started gaining weight, my skin broke out in TERRIBLE cystic acne. Then I started having trouble sleeping at night, and was waking up EXHAUSTED every morning. etc etc. At first I blamed job stress. Then poor eating habits. Then poor skincare products, my new apartment...everything but the IUD.
I have Type 1 Diabetes, so I see an endocrinologist regularly and when I went in yesterday to show him this new BALD SPOT on the top of my head, and talk about my random weight gain, despite joining weight watchers and exercising every single day, he started asking me questions and determined that that IUD needed to come OUT. He said if the hormones were affecting my body enough to cause acne, and increase my insulin dose (I went from 10 units a day to 20...a HUGE increase!) then it was most certainly affecting my hormones enough to cause weight gain, hair loss, etc. It even explained why I suddenly needed to get waxed every three weeks instead of every six.
Unfortunately all the literature indicates that removal comes with terrible bleeding, clots, and cramps. I'm going on vacation in less than one month and I'm super bummed that I have to keep it in until I get back from vacation but I'm not going to the most civilized region so I don't want to risk the kinds of horror stories I've been reading while abroad.
