I have noticed that neurontin has caused me to feel better emotionally and mentally. It has remarkably decreased my depression and anxiety. I am the type of person who has intense fear about things in life and neurontin seems to take it away. It gives me the courage to "get things done". I am a very hurt person and need this type of medicinal help. Yes, it does seem to make me very hungry; therefore, increasing weight, but a person doesn't have to give into their hunger. It makes me feel like life has meaning again. Yes, I have noticed dry mouth, but I just simply drink water. It seems to intensify my libido to no end. I want to have intercourse all the time when I'm taking neurontin; however, I have a hard time climaxing. It takes me at least 3 to 4 hours to have an orgasm, but it feels pleasant until then. At this point, I have nothing, but good things to say about neurontin because I have been a girl who has been severely depressed with intense anxiety and this seems to help me out tremendously. I truly believe that Jesus has sent this medicine to me in order for me to get through these difficult times in life. Yes, my hair has seemed to be falling out a little, but I have attributed it to the stressful event of my ex-boyfriend beating me up. I have often been told that the closer you get to Jesus, the harder the devil tries to hurt you, but the devil is not going to win my soul. There is no shame in admitting that we need medicinal help at times or even for the rest of our lives. That is what doctors and medicine is for. Every drug has their side effects. Everything needs to be done in moderation. I will continue to post when I notice other side effects. This is nice to have other people share in their good and bad experiences with neurontin.

I have been taking Neurontin for almost two years and am on 2800mg per day for severe headaches and face pain. I started it when I was pregnant and thankfully my baby is perfect despite feeling extremely stressed about what may happen to her. I can't wait for a diagnosis so maybe I can get off these damn tablets as I haven't felt 'myself' for so long.

This stuff makes my stomach burn and feel bloated. Also bad indigestion and chest pains. I'm only on 300mg. I am on the medication for diabetic neuropathy which it works wonders for. Does anyone know of there are any other meds that treat these symptoms without the constipation and complete loss of sexual desire?

I was prescribed this medicine by my back doctor as I have a herniated disk in my lower back. Injections didn't seem to be doing anything and since this medicine which is intended to treat seizures, has the side effect of blocking nerve pulses to the brain. I thought I would give it a try and see if I could get through the day. I had been on Hydrocodone but that stuff made me dizzy and nauseated if I didn't lie down after taking it. I don't remember the exact dose but I don't care to one way or the other. I had auditory hallucinations and a migraine headache for 3 days. I ended up missing two days of work and could barely function. Maybe that was the idea as a seizure medication it would dope them up and they wouldn't need to function.

Well, Neurontin does take away some nerve pain, not big nerve pain like the leg nerve pain upon walking and sleeping. It does have side effects. I got dizzy, constantly sleepy, a sore throat, nausea, stomach aches and headaches. I took the pill apart to reduce the dosage. 100 mg. was too much for me, driving wasn't a good idea since I had a head injury and drugs can affect you more strongly (comprised). I stuck with it for three weeks, but now my stomach as doubled up. I can't stand stomach pains along with nerve pain. I did like the effect it had when sleeping, but I can't stand big time stomach pain when awake. Forget it. I will just deal with the pain.

I have just been put on Neurontin and found out about this weight gain thing!! I am freaked out. I have come off of Topamax due to I could not handle the side effects and I was like I was in a coma. I am also on lexapro for depression so the topamax really effected me. The Neurontin has said to be given to bi polar patients but from what I have read people are having depression problems on it. So the whole weight gain and the depression thing is scaring me.

I was first prescribed Neurontin in November of 2008 for cervical disc bulge touching my spinal cord causing severe nerve pain in my left extremities. I was prescribed narcotics and eventually prescribed Neurontin. The side effects from Neurontin, at that time, were seemingly intolerable, but as the narcotics were decreased several months later, I found the Neurontin was actually effective and did its purpose. The side effects from the Neurontin were not that great to outway the pain factor I had. I believe this drug does its job!!!!

Hello everyone..I have many great things to say about Neurontin. It has been a miracle medication for me. I was in a car accident in 2000 as a passenger my face and head hit the windshield at 80mph. my jaw was broke and the back of my teeth were broken.
Little did I know it was extremely traumatic! My MRI's came back fine and I moved on with my life. About 6 months later my life began to change a brown spot covered my eyesight in the left eye. I began falling all the time and having seizures.
I had another MRI's of by brain done it came back negative. Not one Doctor could seem to understand what was wrong with me. I was put on Topamax for bad headaches that seemed to help. I began loosing weight and continued having seizures(Granmal) where you lose ur vision and it began to effect my speech and i would become confused.
My life was like this for 5 long years. Life didn't get better, I began to be soo tired and felt exhausted all the time. One day out of no where , I couldn't raise my head to get out of bed for work, my whole right side was burning and i was in pure agony!!! i will never forget that day. I had to have my Daughter help me up and i could barley walk...I pushed myself to keep going thinking this is all in my mind!! theres nothing wrong with me.. The MRI's are negative. I proceeded with my day in so much pain and limping all day.
It finally went away and I was fine again fo a small amount of time, I started not being able to remember things ....and forgetting from one second to the next and getting lost when I would drive...i began to panic and have anxiety, I felt like my life was out of control. I called my Mom and she said she had noticed a change in me, things I guess I didn't even know. She said I couldn't hold a conversation as before and i would slur my words and I couldn't recall what she would tell me.
My attacks moved to 4-5 times a week sometimes having seizures 2-3 times a day. I ended up having to be taken care of and moving where my Mother was so she could watch over me. I didn't get better. I couldn't work and I couldn't do much of anything.
My Mother took me to a MS specialist and he was the one who noticed there was something wrong! My face and legs would jerk and I couldn't sit still ..I had so much going thru my mind what could be wrong? I had 2 Sets of MRI's this time and it wasn't fine this time...My Spinal Cord was barley attached to my Brain Stem and CV 5-6 in my neck.
I was at the stage of being in a wheelchair not that I hadn't been using one from time to time and needing a cane.
I was sent to ER Surgery and had a stay in the Hospital and really thought I was a lucky Person to have made it for 5yrs without dying. It has been 4years and I still have soo many problems, I'm held together with a steel plate in my neck that holds mt together.
I'm now 41 years old and I wonder what my future holds. I'm not the same girl I used to be and probably never will be. I have to have Neurontin 600mgx4 a day and 1000mg Keppra a day...Without it I would not want to live the pain is unbearable for me! The only negative side affect is my hair falls out and I have severe Insomnia. Neurontin is a Miracle for me!

I wish all of you the BEST! Prayers for all of you.....

I am a recovering heroin addict. Everyone thinks I am sober. However, I feel differently. I have been taking Neurontin for about a year now and am completely addicted to it. My doctor began prescribing me 300 mg. 3x a day. when I realized it gave me a calming, relaxing, energizing feeling. It made me feel like I could handle anything. My kids, work, cooking, the laundry, my emotions. Everything was perfect, I was in total control. I convinced the doctor I needed more, "MY BACK PAIN BECAME IMENSE!!" I am now up to 900mg, 3x a day and am honestly popping 15- 20 pills at a time. I am so disgusted with myself. I have tried to stop and feel trapped. When I take my normal dosage I feel extremely dizzy, anxious, confused and disconnected. My stress level is very high. I feel like the world is coming down on me. My body hurts. I feel like I've been hit by a truck. I cannot handle reality. I found this website. looking for help, an alternative, someway to help me get off this shit. I get headaches and SEVERE diarrhea. Neurontin is extremely addictive, physically and mentally!!!

I feel like I am walking on clouds; I feel light-headed; I can't think straight/logically; I feel drowsy; I see strange images that are not really there; my stomach is bloated and I have severe, disgusting gas; and my vision is blurred. All this to kill my carpal tunnel pain? It's high time I get off of this poison. I suggest all of you do too.

Ok.. I've been Neurontin for three or four years up to 800 mg 5 times a day for glossopharyngeal neuralgia (extreme Pain in one of the cranial nerves in the throat) any way when the symptoms go into remission i back off from tacking the drug... Since this is my third time coming off I have really tried to pay attention to the feelings and sensations surrounding sided effects.. The biggest thing that I have noticed is more of an emotional problem. the drug seems to make everything OK.. or mountains seem like mole hills. my first time I came off, I had a hard time sleeping and would find myself crying over nothing... I just couldn't cope with my own mind. I feel like the drug subdued everything, The fog or haze it puts you in sorta makes the whole world a wonderful place. I have lost my sex drive and have a hard time working now.. I'm going off it again slowly and am having a hard time completely letting go because it has kept me from being depressed.. I feel more depressed when coming off neuronton than I did on it. I believe long time use of the drug is some what emotionally addictive.. Just be prepared to feel your emotions again once you are off.

I am 49 yrs old. Had been on Neurontin from Aug '08-Jan '09. Was taking it for lower back pain & leg pain due to two bulging discs pressing on nerves running down my leg. When I began taking Neurontin, I couldn't walk because the pain was so bad. Long story short, Neurontin greatly helped my pain - it totally went away. HOWEVER, the entire time I was on Neurontin I felt drugged (dizzy, lethargic, depressed, paranoid). I determined it wasn't worth it (for me anyway) to live in this state of mind. So, slowly, I came off Neurontin and found out that my leg/back pain had eased. What I also learned is that I developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Neurontin masked the pain from that as well, so I didn't even feel it coming on! I think it's dangerous to be on a drug that masks all pain. I now go to physical therapy and so far, experience only minor, tolerable pain (I'm lucky so far). But I know one thing, I will go for injections and even surgery before I ever consider this drug again. It was just awful living like that. I hope this posting has helped some of you.

My experiences with Neurontin were similar to others here. I was on 600mg a day for couple years and it really did help with fibromyalgia pain! The bad thing is I gained 25 pounds and could not get it off! Then I went down to 200mg and lost 12 pounds immediately so I know it caused my weight gain. Recently I took myself off it completely, wanted to try something else. Haven't lost anymore weight (girlscout cookies keep calling my name) but I have had significant tooth pain! I did not make the connection until a neighbor told me today about neurontin causing tooth pain and I believe it! Since on SSD for fibro I don't have dental insurance but the pain is pretty bad sometimes. I'm tempted to go on it again because nothing else, outside of hydrocodone, has worked on my pain. I'm too afraid of Lyrica so I don't know what I will do!

i have been on neurontin for nerve pain in my legs due to vasculitis for a few weeks now. i have only noticed a small increase in appetite. my eyesite seems to be out of focus, but its so bad anyway that i have no idea if its the neurontin or just my eyes, and minor headaches i had no pain relief either........absolutely no improvement at all. my doctor just raised my dose from 900 mgs a day to 1200 the other day. still no pain relief but i am now getting a bit dizzy. i guess we will see what happens!

My doctor prescribed me Neurontin today, and I heard that you can become addicted to it. I am scared to start taking it due that fact. I also read on the internet that it produce psychoactive effects, and I do not want any affects like that because I have a small child to care for. Has anyone experienced any effects like that? I like to feel sober and not drugged up. I have only taken 100 mg so far, but I am supposed to gradually up the dose.

I have been on gabapentin for almost two weeks now. It seems to have helped with my sleep problems and also has helped minimally with my pain. Unfortunately, I have also experienced severe headaches, rapid heart beat and the inability to climax, along with feeling very "spacey" mentally. As I type this, I am waiting for a call back from my doctor's office. I don't think I am going to be able to continue taking gabapentin.

I am taking 800 mg three times a day and have been for a little over a month now. It is an excellent mood stabilizer however I have gained over 30lbs since I have been on it and extremely bloated. I am not a fat girl so I think its time for me to end the madness. This medicine would be perfect if it didn't make me want to stuff my face 24/7 and lay around all day.

I have been on neurontin 300 mg for only 2 weeks, if not less and I feel the weight gain. I'm either bloated or this is unbelievable. I have a disc in both my left hand and my lower back, fibromayalgia and Lupus. Therefore, the severity of my pain is unbearable. With Neurontin, there is no pain. But, there is the dizziness, weight gain, forgetfulness and just feeling incoherent and drunk. I don't think I can handle the side effects. So, I do have a question, if I've only been on neurontin for two weeks, can I just stop them on my own or do I need to speak to my Dr.? I know he will tell me not to which is why I'm asking. I have an issues with my weight and gaining weight would destroy my psyche. Thanks for listening ..it's nice to be able to find common ground with people. I don't feel so alone anymore.

I have been on neurontin for 3 weeks due to nerve pain from a cervical disk. Last week I went to the doctor and it appears I have a bad urinary tract infection and a little incontinence. The pain is bad and I cant work right now. After searching the net I found on the manufacturer site that the above is an infrequent side effect. I guess I am one of the few.

I am my husbands caregiver. He is on many medications the last 26 years due to chemical poisoning thanks to our government not protecting their civilian painters at the Army Depot where he worked.
He has permanent brain damage, CRS damage, memory loss and short term memory, CHF and Bollis Emphysema. Now he also has Type II diabetes a severe case as he was not diagnosed for 7+ years of testing.
To make this short. He has been on many drugs for pain, diabetes, blood pressure, the brain damage, ( he is a recovering, not drinking alcoholic)
Recently the doctor took him off the Codeine # 3 that he had been taking for almost 15 years, 8 per day. and gave him time release Morphine Sulfate.15 MG. They also gave him Gabapentin for the neuropathy which is severe in his feet and starting to go up his legs. He is over weight, above the waist, and has not had a problem with High Blood Pressure, for many years since taking 60 mg daily of Inderal. His Blood Sugars have been between 98-140 without medication. When he was first diagnosed he was put on glyberide and it worked so good he was off it in 6 months and totally diet controlled since then but about every 3 years he would go on it for about 6 months and then he was ok again.
He has not needed it for the last 7 years. Since starting the gabapentin he went from 300 to 600 to 900 and slowly increased the dose to 1600 mg. The 300's are caps, the 600's are tablets.
All the sudden he has pounding headaches, I took his BP which we had not been watching and it was 198/115 with a 98 pulse. The only change was the gabapentin and Morphine. The morphine does not seem to be causing any side effects, once he was used to getting sleepy.. but once the gabapentin was added, all he does is sleep. The blood sugars also went up with the blood pressure. His were 358 higher than they have ever been except when he was first diagnosed. I was able to get the glyberide and that is bring down the sugar levels only taking 1/4 tab 2 x a day, and the blood pressure is also coming down, it was 139/85 with a pluse of 76 which is still too fast. I talked to some pharmancy friends and they said " Its the gabapentin " so I told the doc I wanted to stop it and he said to start leveling off, one 300 mg cap every 4 days. We were down to 2 a day till Friday and saw the doctor. Due to his taking Cymbalta they did not want to give him any of the other anti depressants so they want him to back on the gabapentin up to 1200 a day instead of the 1600 a day.
Taking into consideration his medical issues and meds, I don't believe this is a safe or sound decision, but I know how much pain he was in before the gabapentin.
I wish they would be more forthright about the side effects of this medication. They said it only causes blood sugar issues in 1 % and they did not even address the high blood pressure etc.
His pupils are also different, he has the kidney pain, but his biggest problem is sleepy.. hopefully it's not his kidneys or his heart. They did blood tests on Friday and I am asking for a EKG.. in the mean time we are monitoring both blood pressure and blood sugar 6 or more times a day. Thank you so much for sharing. It really helps to know we are not alone.

I have been taking Neurontin since January 2008 with a gradual increase from 300 mg to 900mg daily.
I am having several of the side effects especially since the increase to the 900mg.
Sleepy, constipation, burning eyes, pain on my left side, probably the kidney area.
I was put on the medicine for a pinched nerve in my back which was causing pain in my left leg. It seems to be easing but I don't like the side effects. Will they gradually go away?
Hope to receive some response from others.

I have been on Neurontin for over a year for neuropathy and the other day I was looking at me gums and freaked out. My teeth, in the front, lower looked rotten. I have a little gum problem and therefore brush two or three times a day and use a water peek with peroxide every morning. I guess I was focusing too much on the gums to notice my teeth. I know it does a number on your saliva production but I never realized how much. Wow. Went to Target today and got a dentist scaler and pick set and have scraped off the worst of it. My doctor put me on Neurontin for nerve damage to my foot related to heel spur surgery. I started taking it on the 17th of this month with it having no effect on the pain (I was only taking one dose a day at 300 mg). He has since upped me to 300 mgs twice a day. I am now having problems with bladder control, infrequent headaches, sleeplessness, inability to climax and horrible bloating and gas. If I hadn't been on other pain meds for the past 8 months, I would stop taking it. Any suggestions?

I regularly chart my basal body temperature as a way of tracking my menstrual cycles. Prior to starting Neurontin, my cycles were very regular, though I had an abnormally short luteal phase. I've been taking Neurontin for a month now: 300 mg 3 times daily. Now my basal body temps change drastically from day to day instead of following the regular rise and fall pattern of my cycle, and my period is 4 days late so far. Have any other women experienced similar side effects?

I started out exhausted and dizzy as I was upping the dose for the first 3 weeks and then magically all of my pain was gone! I have chronic back pain due to L5/S1 disc removal, bulging discs and degenerative disc disease. Everything was great until I got my period and it started for 1 day and stopped w/mild spotting (that is not normal) the Dr. suggested I was pregnant when I KNEW that I wasn't. After the 4th week on the medication my hair started falling out. 1st more strands than normal and now by the handful! It is obviously thinning. Has anyone experienced this? Is the follicle permanently damaged by the chemicals? I've since weaned myself off the medicine and am in complete pain again. This seems to be one of the rarer side effects of this medication. Has anyone experienced this?

I have been taking Neurontin for 1 week (300 mg 1x per day and then prescribed to increase to 300 mg 2x per day after 1st week). It has been incredible taking the pain away (hemi-vertibrae bone defect in neck with severe arthritis)!!! Like Oh my goodness wonderful!!! however - by the end of the day - i am 20 lbs bloated and feel like the weight gain is right around the corner... I am very aware of body ( I am a dancer) and need to know if this is going to balance out... i know the answer of it depends oneach person - but some insight would help me not panic right now

I took 600mg of Neurontin 3x a day. I started to get gas during the 5 years I was on the pills. At 1st, I only took the pills 2x a day and it wasn't terrible. Later I had to start taking the pills 3x a day and after my 2nd meal of the day, I would get intestinal pain, bloating, and gas! It didn't seem to matter what I ate. My doctor gave me a zillion tests and could never find the cause of the problem. I had surgery for my neck 3 weeks ago and was weaned off of the Neurontin. For 3 weeks now, I haven't had nay of the gas!!! It was the Neurontin all the time. I am so glad to be off of the Neurontin.

I have been taking Neurontin for 2 months. I didn't think it was really helping because I still couldn't function normally. I have had 3 disk surgeries on L4/5, and still have severe pain in my right hip and down my right leg all the way to my foot. I am told there is scar tissue build-up in the area causing the nerve pain. I started taking Neurontin in small doses and have built up to 1200mg 3 times a day. I still couldn't walk more than 20 feet without leaning on something, but the pain was noticably less severe. My doctor put me on Trileptal instead, and the first day off the Neurontin was a nightmare...the pain was worse than ever. I went back to the Neurontin immediately. I have experienced some weight gain, but have attibuted that to no exercise. It does seem to make me forgetful, tired and somewhat depressed, but without it, the pain is completely debilitating. I want my life back, but I don't know what to do from here. Neurontin has helped the pain to a more tolerable level, but if I still can't even walk, I'm not even close to functioning normally. If anyone has a suggestion, I would love to hear it...thanks.

MAJOR WEIGHT GAIN, SHAKING OF THE LEGGS, CONFUSION,

Starting ever 3-4 months, then every 1 to 6 weeks with no known trigger I get a burning skin sensation that comes on suddenly and within 10 minutes or so I feel blow torch heat staring with neck and face then limbs and trunk that actually looks exactly like a sunburn, but feels about 10x worse and no peel afterwards. And my face muscles weaken, face droops, and I look 10 years older at it's peak. These "attacks" usually only last 30 to 45 minutes and driving with AC on full blast or taking a cold shower is the only relief during. All I know for sure is this never happened in my 44 years until prescribed gabapentin.(Nuerontin). I have GAD and my doctor suggested a 400 mg pill along with at Xanax 4x a day. I have tapered down to 1 gabapentin in the mornining and intend to quit in 10 days. Bad news is I've been at the low dose for the last 6 months out of the 18 months on it and the attacks haven't changed as hoped, in fact I'm writing because I just had one last Thursday and again today (Monday, only 4 days later)... a new record for shortest span between attacks. Could recognize no benefit or difference with regards to it's effectiveness treating my Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The Xanax as needed appears to be all I need alone. Only exception being that early on if I took my 100 mg Xanax w/out a gabapentin you could get drowsy while driving.... I break them in 1/2 doses or drink coffee, does the trick. I'm on only these two drugs and don't see the same side affects posted about Xanax so I deduced it's the gabapentin and am stopping it. Yes I too noticed occasional blurred vision, confusion, and munchies, reduced libido, more difficult or no orgasm as well on gabapentin. Too bad.

I was put on Neurontin to help with the side effects of discontinuing the use of Lyrica. Not too bad a trade off .....Or so I thought. Now I have been taking 1500 mg a day for almost a year and I want to stop taking this drug. My memory is shot, I can't find the words I want to say even for the most mundane things, my vision has deteriorated, and the worst of all has been my mood swings and sleeplessness. My family has paid a tremendous toll for this drug. Emotionally - not monetarily.
I just want to stop taking this and can't seem to find any information to help with that. I know neurotransmitters have been affected and I just want to be done with this and have the old me back. I really do miss the real me.
If anyone has been successful at stopping this or knows where I can find knowledgeable support please let me know. Thank you from me and my family.

I have been on Neutontin for about 8 or 9 years. I still experience side effects that I just can't get rid of. I take 400mg 4 times a day. I have swelling of my abdomin, hands, legs and feet. I feel drunk and ditsy. I have memory loss and find it very hard to concentrate. On the up side, I am very happy and feel as though I can accomplish anything when I take it. I have the courage to do things I normaly wouldn't do. I am taking it for seizures and also nerve pain from a back injury. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this.

I take 3600 MG/Day to help with an indiopatic neuropathy on both legs. It does work very well and I am more or less able to live my life except for the side effects which are memory loss (I now write everything down) and sleepless nights. Please check the neuropathy.org site and try to create a support group in your area
