I WAS PUT ON NEURONTIN FOR LEG SPASMS & FOR PSYCHITRIC REASONS. MY LEGS & ANKLES SWELLED & I ALSO EXPERIENCED SLURRED SPEACH. I ALSO HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY BALANCE. I WAS TAKEN OFF THE MED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I GUESS IT DOESN'T WORK FOR EVERYONE.

Since starting on Neurontin for headaches, a little over a year ago, I've been diagnosed with: IBS, Colitis and High Blood Pressure. I have also had swelling and pain in my ankles and legs and constant debilatating abdominal pain and bloating. I tend to go from constipation directly to diarreha. I never had trouble with my blood pressure (other than with my first pregnancy) until I started taking this medication. It always ran about 115-120/75-80. I've started looking at info. on the web regarding Neurontin. I've learned a lot. It has many more side effects and medical causes than I was first informed about. The makers are also being sued for having their Reps. lie about it's uses and "cures". I've also read that it has terrible side effects when trying to stop. It has helped my headaches, but I feel I've paid a price for them to stop. I think that my headaches were not as bad as the abnominal pain that I'm experiencing. I'm going to see my Dr. and find ou how to stop taking it.

I started taking Neurontin about 4 years ago.My neuroligist started me on it for Polyneuropathy(nerve damage in my feet and legs)He started me out on 300 mgs. (taking 2 three times a day) It was a miracle drug at first, since my feet had been hurting(burning, stinging, numb toes and balls of feet felt like I had been walking on sharp rocks bare footed and they were bruised)for 2 years. Then they started hurting again after I had been on it for 2 weeks. So he increased the dosage to 400mg taking it 2 three times a day and same thing happened. So he increased it to 800 mg. 2 three times a day.I started getting blisters on my tongue and alot of swelling in my feet, ankles and legs,so he decreased it and that all went away.So he slowing started increasing it and those didn't come back.
I went to another dr. because I moved and he decreased it because thought I was taking too much. And the pain became worse.Well I had ins. whenever I was taking it before and then I didn't have it anymore after about 8 months of being on it.It is so expensive so I had to cut way back on it because I couldn't afford to take the full dosage I was suppose to take. And that is how I know it works for the pain. While I was cut back on it,the pain was almost unbareable.I am taking 300 mg. 3 in the am,2 at noon and 3 at bedtime and my feet and legs still hurt, but I know from experience that if I wasn't on it I would be in unbearable pain.
I am on alot of various drugs.I also take Lamictal 25 mg. 1 four times a day for the neuropathy. And I also have fibromylgia.I seen where alot of people have fibro and it is being treated with this drug.It doesn't seem to help my fibro.Or maybe it would be alot worse if I wasn't on it.Don't know.I take Elavil 100mg. 1 at bedtime,Zanaflex 4mg. 1 at bedtime for the pain and fibro,Synthroid 0.1 mg. 1 a day,Pravachol 40 mg. 1 a day for high cholesterol,Metaglip 2.5-500 mg. 1 a day and Avandia 4 mg. 1 a day for diabeties and Vicoden 5 mg. & apap. 1 every 6 hours for pain.
The Neurontin seems to interact well with all these drugs.
I have dry mouth and some confusion which affects my ability to think and carry on multi-tasks.I am trying to get on my diability.I applied twice and was denied and I got a lawyer and we went to court before the judge 2 weeks ago and it will be 3 to 4 months before I hear if I am getting on it or not.

I don't know if this is a new one or not, but my 8yo daughter is taking Neurontin as a last-resort medicine for intractable Complex Partial Seizures. She is on 800mg 3x/day. It has been like giving her speed--she can't sit still, can't concentrate, and runs through the house flapping her arms like wings or jumping up and down and flapping. She has experienced the trembling legs, the dizziness, the headaches.

Ref, Swelling of feet and legs: Try to think back about whether the swelling happened before or after you went off the Neurontin, as this drug acts like a strong diuretic, and if your kidneys are not working correctly (your doctor) can check this for you) one of the first places fluid collects is in the lower extremities. If the swelling started two weeks ago it could be a 'rebound effect' from going off the drug.
Also, diabetes and congestive heart failure have symptoms of swelling in the feet and lower legs. It depends on what condition you were taking the Neurontin for; obviously it's a bad symptom, but probably is only peripherally connected to Neurontin. Gapentin, the primary ingredient of N. is often given to people who are on kidney dialysis, since that is the primary effect it has on one's body.
JanK, Neurontin taker, and a person who has researched this drug extensively for physical effects.

I have been taking 300mg of neurontin three times per day for the past 12 months due to a back injury and finally major back surgery in September 2002. I have many of the same symptoms: light headedness, swelling in knees, ankles, feet, short-term memory loss, lack of concentration and worst of all 'restless leg syndrome', severe muscle cramps from my thighs to my toes in both legs. I am really becoming concerned about these symptoms and I'm wondering if I should go off of neurontin for good. I have begun experiencing pain over my kidneys of late and I'm concerned that I may be experiencing the beginnings of kidney failure.
I would appreciate any comments.

I take 3600 MG/Day to help with an indiopatic neuropathy on both legs. It does work very well and I am more or less able to live my life except for the side effects which are memory loss (I now write everything down) and sleepless nights. Please check the neuropathy.org site and try to create a support group in your area
