I went on the NuvaRing after having irregular periods with heavy bleeding which the doctor blamed on mild endometriosis. I didn't have a period the first month I was using the NuvaRing, which I was assured was normal. I continued on the NuvaRing hoping to have a "normal" period the next month. I didn't have a period again the next month either, which could have been a result of the amount of exercise I do and the weight loss from the exercise. I just thought it was my body getting used to the NuvaRing. I then noticed every time I had my nails done (I have acrylic nails and have for years) I would have an allergic reaction. My hands would swell and itch for two days after getting my nails done and then a week or two later, all the skin around my nails would peel off. I didn't have a period that lasted more than a day for the third and fourth month I was on the NuvaRing. Then, I started to get to the point that I was so tired all the time. I had no energy. All I wanted to do was sleep. I was so moody, all I wanted to do was sleep and cry. The allergic reaction with my nails was getting worse every time I went in for my appointment. I then started gaining weight, no matter how much I was exercising. I also noticed I had no sex drive whatsoever and it seemed I had lost a lot of breast tissue. My cup size went down and I looked like a boy, not to mention feeling like one because I hadn't had a real period and I had no desire to do anything sexual whatsoever. I went to my doctor for a check up and asked her to run blood tests to see if I had a thyroid problem or Cushings disease. I also had horrible acne, on my face, back and shoulders. All my blood work came back normal and when the doctor questioned me about what had happened leading up to all of these symptoms and the only thing that was different was the NuvaRing. My doctor said many people cannot tolerate the hormones in NuvaRing and suggested I go off of it and see what happened. After being off the NuvaRing for a few weeks, I had a period that lasted three days. I felt like a girl! I noticed I wasn't as tired after about six weeks and after eight weeks, I had another period and actually had cramps for the first time in five months. I also stopped having the allergic reactions after getting my nails done, but that took two months to happen because it took that long to get all the stuff out of my body. I am certain the NuvaRing was the culprit of my severe tiredness and moods, the lack of periods, loss of breast tissue and acne as well as the weight gain and allergic reactions. I will never use the stuff again! I went back to my OBGYN after I stopped using the NuvaRing and told her what had happened. She wasn't alarmed at all and that worried me because she just kept trying to get me to take another form of BC and didn't seem to care how the NuvaRing had caused so many problems. I am not taking any BC and that is fine because I am not involved with anyone. I feel normal again, finally after three months. I think the NuvaRing is not such a good thing.

Has anyone experienced a rash while using NuvaRing??
I started using NuvaRing for the first time 2 days ago and when I woke up yesterday I had a rash on my arm, chin, and chest, and today it has spread all over my one arm and has made it's way over to the other. I know it's not an allergic reaction to food because I haven't eaten any new foods and it's not poison ivy because I haven't been outdoors like that in the past few days. I also know that it's not an allergic reaction to anything else (except maybe NuvaRing itself) because I haven't used any new soaps, laundry detergent, jewelry, make-up etc. Also, I was very fatigued yesterday, I slept all day (went to bed around 12 the previous night and woke up around 5 in the afternoon) and when I got up I had absolutely no energy, and that is not like me at all, normally I'm a very energetic person. So far those are the only symptoms I have had, but I'm questioning whether or not I should take the ring out now before things get worse...

Is there anyone out there that has had severe chest pains, particularly in the sternum region, on the ring? I've had mine out for two days after weeks of RAGE and back pain...along with chest pains and heart palpitations. Just hoping the chest pain and pressure will subside.
Thank you.

Hi,
I started using the NuvaRing on Sunday 3rd Feb on the first day of my period. I did quite a bit of research on this and was very happy with feedback i had read. On Monday night when i went to bed i started feeling very itchy all over, head to toe. It got so bad through the night i felt i wanted to rip my skin off, especially my eyes. This continued throughout the day on Tuesday. When i went to doctor i was told it was an allergic reaction to the ring. I'm now on anti-histamines and feel a lot better after removing the ring. Needles to say i will not be using the NuvaRing again.

I'm on my 3rd cycle with NuvaRing. I've been on anti-depressants for years, so I can't tell any difference there, and some of the other side effects you've mentioned were present in some degree before the ring and attributable to other factors. Three issues: 1) The vaginal secretions and odor have definitely been bad! 2) The tissue I touch when inserting and removing the ring feels rough and bumpy - some of it could be scar tissue from biopsy, LEEP, and cystectomy but has anyone else had an allergic skin reaction to it? Especially so far inside? I never paid much attention so I can't tell if I'm imagining the change. 3) My boyfriend and I recently got back together and have been intimate twice. Tuesday is the first time we put the ring to the test by him not pulling out. Since then, he says he has had chafing, irritation, and some sort of rash on his penis. Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

Hi, when I first started NUVARING I loved it. I didn't have to remember if I took a pill everyday, my migraines were gone, and my boobs were getting bigger. However, I was always irritated, crying, anxious, and annoyed. I thought it was just because I didn't like my roommate and I missed my life at home (I'm currently in college). I would call my mom at least two times a day crying my eyes out, I never associated my sadness with my birth control. About a month ago I started getting curious about these side effects because I felt like I was having an allergic reaction. I am a clean person, especially in my special regions and I was having intense itching and I also had little red dots down there.

When I talked to my mom today, I was crying once again, and she said that she really thought that my crazy bipolar emotions were because of the NUVARING. So I decided to type NUVARING side effects into Google and see what came up. When I saw what other girls were experiencing to be honest I was relieved. I was so happy to find out that I'm not crazy, I'm just having side effects to my birth control. I've never been so happy to have been so sad haha.

I just called my doctor to see if I can get back on the pill. Everyone who said they stopped taking NUVARING says in about 4 months they got back to the old them...I'm only hoping this is true, for my sake and for my boyfriends sake.

I have been experiencing problems with the NuvaRing as well. After having my first ring in for just shy of two weeks, my hands and feet started itching a LOT. I just thought it was the change in weather and started lathering them with lotion thinking it would help. It didn't, and in fact, my symptoms worsened to hives on my butt, knees, and hands. My fingers swelled, along with my toes, making it painful to walk. I started researching side effects of NR and found several people having similar symptoms as me. At first I was worried that I was having an allergic reaction to the Gardasil (HPV) shot, which I got on Monday (the 15th), but my skin was starting to itch prior to my shot. After reading up on the NR, I'm starting to think that is what's causing my hives/welts and swelling! I already called my doctor about the swelling, because I thought it was from the Gardasil, but now that I'm almost certain that it's from the NR, I'm going to call them on Monday and tell them I need to stop using it. This is the 5th birth control I've been on in two years...it's getting ridiculous! They can't find one that works for me...the oral pills work for a month or two, and then I start breakthrough bleeding because the hormone levels are too low! I'm starting to think that my body rejects birth control, and that it's not for me! Is this possible?!

not really sure if 1 of my symptoms were from nr, i had been on it for 3 months and started breaking in hives for 3 weeks now. my husband thinks it is from nr, but the derm and pharm told me that it is not a side effect. if i am allergic to it i should have had the rash the moment i put it in. i had definitely gained 6 lbs. i thought it was from prednisone(derm put me on prednisone) thought it was allergic reaction from antibiotic. i cant stop eating, bloated and gassy all the time it is annoying and frustrating !!!!!!!

I have been on the NV for about 5 mo.s now and had many of the same symtoms -- Very moody, emotional, headaches, depression and very tired. I also want to sleep all of the time I can sleep from Friday night until Monday morning - when I have to go back to work. I had a very sore and painful lower back. I have gained about 7 #'s and think of eating all the time. Also, when I first went on NV I had my period for 3 wks. Very uncomfortable and started to have allergic reaction to wearing pads for that length of time. Then one night I was having dinner with a girlfriend who happens to be a Phar. rep and she mentioned the 37 lawsuits againt NV. At this time I still didn't put the symtoms I was having with the NR but decided to do my own research and found myself on this webpage. Then it hit me after reading all of the posts - I should take this thing out! What a mess!
