Omeprazole and chest pain

I am taking omeprezole & blood pressure medication & am having muscle cramps in my legs & feet mostly, but even in my chest (Thought I was having a heart attack).I am experiencing severe fatigue & like one of the previous posts, I'm having difficulty even holding the steering wheel of my truck.It's difficult for me to stay awake ,especially if I relax for more than 5 minutes.I assumed it was the blood pressure meds, & stopped taking them recently to see if that would help.(It didn't) I'm going to stop all synthetic meds ASAP & hope for recovery.I've been taking these for 3 years & am experiencing many of the same symptoms as other posts,including swollen breasts (I'm a male)...THANK GOD FOR THIS SITE!!! I have been on omprazole 20mg 2x per day for 1 1/2 years. I went off of omeprazole in December of last year because I was tired of taking drugs. In February of this year I went to the ER because I thought I was having a heart attack (severe chest pain, pain shooting up my left jaw and my left arm was numb). The doctor in the ER gave me Mylanta with lidocaine and told me to go back on the omeprazole. I did and haven't missed a dose since that hospital visit. Until September 9, 2009 I took my regular dose of omeprazole (one in the morning and one in the evening) I was having a lot of discomfort and was uneasy. That day I also took two aspirins. I had continued stomach and chest discomfort and took some Mylanta. My old doctor had advised my to up my dose in severe situations and I took a third 20 mg dosage and within 10 minutes my face and arm went numb. I was rushed back to the hospital , my blood pressure was 144/81 and I was having panic attacks. I felt like I was going crazy. The doctor ordered bloodwork and a cat scan (because of the numbness) all came back normal. No one addressed the chest pain. Maybe because the EKG I had in February was normal (I don''t know). They had no answers and told me to follow-up with my primary care physician. I went home and finally tried to go to bed, I couldn't sleep well, my mind was racing. The next day the numbness and pins/needles went all over my body. Like everything just went to sleep. I tried to relax and stay calm. I finally went to bed that night but had a hard time falling to sleep (my mind was racing and I was scared). I eventually went to sleep and woke up with less numbness but I had a stiff and painful neck with a killer headache. I don't get headaches that often and this was a major concern for me. I called my insurance and they advised me to go in for an immediate care/same day appointment. I did which was also inconclusive but the doctor asked about my omeprazole. I told her I haven't taken any medications since I was seen at the hospital because I was scared it was something I took that caused the numbness. She didn't say that my symptoms were related to the omeprazole but told me to not take it again and only use Mylanta for my stomach problems. She was not a fan of this medication and told me it is over-prescribed. I have not taken the omperazole since September 9, 2009 and the numbness is almost gone but I still have the tingling and pins/needles from time-to-time and neck and chest pain. No headaches. The doctor gave me a mild muscle relaxer (for my neck pain) but with everything that has happened I haven't taken that either.
I have fibromyalgia and I manage my pain without medications and I do have random symptoms from time to time because of the fibromyalgia but these were acute and terrible. I have never experienced anything like this and I am hoping since I have stopped the omperazole I will go back to normal soon..........

I had been taking Omeprazole 20 mg for about a year and a half. Recently, my symptoms (chest pain) seemed to be getting worse so my doctor told me to take one in the morning and one in the evening. That didn't seem to help my symptoms. For the past few years, I have been having crushing fatigue--I was afraid I might have leukemia or something of the sort. Five days ago I stopped taking Omeprazole and I now feel like a new person--my fatigue has practically vanished. Also, my feelings of vertigo have disappeared, as well as the chest pain I had been experiencing which had led my doctor to increase my dosage.

Wow, I was amazed to find this site! and glad I did. I went to my doctor about 3 months ago, and I had some reflux coming up and he prescribed me the omeprazole. I didn't do any research on the drug and thought it was just a stronger version of tums or rolaids because I've never had to deal with this before. Well, I started on the Omeprazole and I felt like I was in another world. After I started taking it, I honestly feel many other things have happened, such as after I would eat, I couldn't breathe! It's not that I felt the food was getting stuck, but was moving slower or something and I couldn't take air through my nose or mouth...not once did I blame it on this meds...anyhow, My neck started hurting VERY bad! I thought it was just stress....next, my memory feels like it's really slacking and I'm only 38. I can't concentrate. So, I ended up in the ER and was having very bad chest pains...thought it was a heart attack, but everything turned out to be ok and they said I had GERD. They prescribed me Nexium. That's when the true hell began. The first day wasn't bad,but a lot of gas and chest pain, along with the shortness of breath continuing. By day 2 on nexium, I was having severe, and I mean severe anxiety and panic attacks...I ended back up at the ER, again, they said everything was ok and they gave me ranitidine to take too. If I'm not mistaken, nexium and prilosec are almost the same thing? Tonight was the worst of my life.....my panic attacks were horrible, felt like something was stuck in my throat, my neck hurts so bad and my mouth was so dry I couldn't even spit, I was so dizzy I couldn't walk, my ears were cramping from the anxiety and my eyes were blurry...I honestly feel crazy. I have taken prilosec on and off for 3 months, and now I know why my anxiety was so bad for so long, but the nexium topped it off. I heard that 40 mg of prilosec is actually 20 mg of nexium....this drug is BAD and I will never take it again. I will try the apple cider vinegar method w/ some honey. My grandparents swore by it and just start watching what Im eating. I heard its 72 hours before this crap gets out of your system..I can't wait!

Muscle /joint pain, Chest pain, vivid nightmares, have had an ablation to cure high speed heart rhythm.
Stopped taking Omeprazole as I was having excessive pain though the arthritic swelling was almost zero.
Now feel MUCH! better

I am so happy I found this web site i literally thought I was loosing my mind
for the last six months to a year since being prescribed omerprazole I have been to neurologist for tingling in hands, arms, feet,face,head and arms . I have been to the rheumatologist for unexplained pain in my feet, back,stomach.I have made numerous trips to the emergency room for chest pain, lightheadedness only to be told by all of these health care professionals that nothing was wrong with me. I feel so relieved to know that I am not crazy
because that was my next stop the mental hospital

I am 39 years old and have been on Omeprazole for 6 years. I have had the worst year ever. I was always a healthy and fit guy until 2008. I had chronic headaches and extreme fogginess which led to me having an MRI and seeing a chiro(all negative). I had chronic chest pain which led to EKG's, stress tests, ER visits, and tons of blood work ranging from cardiac, glucose, liver, renal, thyroid, etc...(all negative). Did gastroscopy and found esophagitis and gastritis. Upped the dosage of Omeprazole. Then I started getting tremors, muscle cramping, muscle pain, fatigue, blotchy red skin, and continued fogginess and lightheaded.

Did I mention i still have constant heartburn despite all the Omeprazole. I have done everything...tilt up head of bed, bland diet, no coffee or alcohol, no eating late evening etc....

Doctor put me on Fluoxetine (Prozac) for all my stress and anxiety from these crazy symptoms. After seeing this site and reading all your testimonies I am now thinking it is from the Omeprazole!!! Scary thought to stop since my chest pain and heartburn can be pretty severe and constant. What do I do? Feel like I'm caught between a rock and a hard place here.

I have been diagnosed with a pericardial cyst and thought that the problems I have been having were related to this.....until I found this site! I have been taking omerprazole for over a year now and have had several disturbing symptoms. Heart palputations, racing heart, night sweats and hot flashes, sudden onset of nausea that lasts for about 5 to 10 minutes then goes away and horrible chest, back and rib cramping, which is the same feeling as having a severe gall bladder attack. Recently the worst has happened. In the past I have had the sweats thinking it was only menopause and chest pain thinking it was the acid refllux. We shall see....as of today I am stopping the drug to see what happens. In the past week the most severe problems have occured. I started with bronchitis and the antibiotics and prednisone the doctor put me on seemed to be having side effects which I have never had before with them. The only other medication...omerprazole. (haven't had bronchitis since BEFORE I started taking the omerprazole) After the first day I began having severe chest, back and rib cramping which seemed to worsen by the day, more so that ever before. Then came the swelling in the hands and feet until they looked like I had elephantitis. There is aching somewhat in my arms with a strange weakness. And...the heartburn became so bad that I feel like it's coming out of my mouth. So..the doctor increased the omerprazole to 40mg or up to 80mg if needed. I have been taking 40mg and it didn't seem to really cure the reflux! So I was going to increase it. Not now! I believe after reading all the posted side effects everyone has been having, most of my problems are being caused by one thing....omerprazole! I was truely believing I was having a heart attack, but since I just had ALL the tests done and was given a clean bill of health and better with the exception of the pericardial cyst, I couldn't believe this to be the problem, so back to the doctor I went. She has put me on motrin for the pain and skelaxin for the cramping which seems to be helping. But, and this is the big but, I am going to come off the omerprazole and see if this will begin to eleviate the symptoms completely. Will update this in a couple of weeks when the drug is totally out of my system. Thank-you for this site and keep posting.

I have had most of the side effects you are all talking about.

I was taking it for 2 weeks off one week again one week off one week than on again.

I didn't realize my headaches were form the medicine so kept taking it.

Yesterday I had an exteme reaction, huge panic and anxiety chest pain back pain thought I was going crazy.

I am so happy I found this site.

I will never take it again, Today I did not take it but am still feeling horrible, anxiety, heart pulps, just feeling"out of it"

This is just not right, there were none of these side effects listed on the box.

I wonder how long it will take to feel OK again.

Relative with lung cancer was given Omeprazole 20 mg. once a day. On the second day, he started coughing up huge amounts of red blood which continued for hours and lessening throughout the day. That evening he questioned if the new prescription could have caused the bleeding and decided to discontinue its use. By the third day and since then (this is day six), no blood at all. None of my online searches suggested bleeding as a possible side effect.

I have been taking Omeprazole since December 2007 now so 2 and a half months.

I had the dose increased to 40mg 3 weeks ago as 20mg wasn't curing the burning in my throat.

For a few weeks now i have had increasing vertigo/dizziness and palpitations. I only linked the 2 to the medication just yesterday, googled it just now and confirmed my suspicions to the Omeprazole.

Other feeling i have had since taking this medication...

visual problems
intolerance to bright lights
aching joints
chest pain

Now my question to myself is do i come off the tablets and endure the misery of my acid reflux? surely there must be something else we can take for our stomach problems that don't cause these awful side effects.
Anyone tried anything else that worked and didn't make them unwell?

I've been on Prilosec for 3 yrs, and most recently put on Zegerid, which is omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate. I have had on both the occasional chest pain, anxiety, joint pains, and weakness/fatigue, and mild depression/with aggitation, and confusion. I am on 40 mg a day. These side effects are real, no doubt about it.

I am 71 yrs. old and have had a lifetime of tests and medications to try to control what is now referred to as Gerd. Prilosec was prescribed several years ago and for me it was nothing short of a wonder drug. However, for the past couple of years, I have had several episodes of chest pain and pressure across my shoulders that resulted in Nuclear stress tests, ultrasound, etc., etc. All negative. Today, I had a chest x-ray and they are talking about a cat scan to follow. I have had increasing pressure in my chest, both arms go numb, and what feels like pressure or rawness in my esophagus. I have finally realized that it all coincides with my Insurance Co switch to the generic OMEPRAZOLE. That led me to your site on the internet. I think I have found the answer. Switching to the generec has been a very expensive mistake for my Insurance company. I have discontinued the medication and hope to get back to normal.

My husband was on Prilosec for several years, and switched to Omeprazole by our prescription plan. I don't know if the medication is the cause, but he started experiencing chest pain, and occasional shortness of breath, not the same as the acid reflux discomfort. He went to the Dr. and was tested by blood tests, EKG and chest x-ray. All were normal, so stress thallium test was ordered. He passed the stress test with no problem, but had a small abnormality on the thallium scan. He was referred to a cardiologist because of this and a heart cath was performed, also normal so thallium scan was a false positive. The cardiologist changed his medication to Nexium. Could this all be due to switching to Omeprazole? I don't know, but the timing is suspicious.
