Depression, itching of the skin with small pimples erupting at site, sensitivity to bright lights, swelling of tongue, numbness of feet and legs, tiredness and fatigue, and most of all a depressed feeling.

Having been on omeprazole on and off for 15 years I have finally come off it.
My Gerd symptoms were worse at the end of the working day, probably due to me being a dentist, not an ideal posture for a Gerd sufferer. I could control my symptoms with 10mg daily but still got occasional side effects. The main one was slight diziness/ visual disturbance esp with bright light.
Have been using DGL 20 mins before my evening meal and just take magnesium hydroxide based antacid at night if required. Feel it is better to let the bodies natural buffering sort out the acid-base balance.
It has taken 3 months of cold turkey and the odd bout of severe symptoms but seem to be coming out the other side and now have several days at a time with no symptoms at all.

I have been taking Omeprazole since December 2007 now so 2 and a half months.
I had the dose increased to 40mg 3 weeks ago as 20mg wasn't curing the burning in my throat.
For a few weeks now i have had increasing vertigo/dizziness and palpitations. I only linked the 2 to the medication just yesterday, googled it just now and confirmed my suspicions to the Omeprazole.
Other feeling i have had since taking this medication...
Severe dizziness
vertigo
palpitations
headaches/migraines
weakness
fatigue
sweating
nausea
bloating
stomach cramps
visual problems
intolerance to bright lights
aching joints
chest pain
Now my question to myself is do i come off the tablets and endure the misery of my acid reflux? surely there must be something else we can take for our stomach problems that don't cause these awful side effects.
Anyone tried anything else that worked and didn't make them unwell?

I was given Prilosec after an upper endoscopy confirmed GERD. Mostly my symptoms were a feeling like a swallowed a childes building block and it was stuck in my chest, along with heart burn. Prilosec seemed to help, but after about 2 months on it, I began to experience severe dizziness, anxiety, depression, heart palpitations, tingling hands and feet, occasional numbness to right side of body and was diagnosed with anemia. The dizziness was the worst for me. It got so bad, I thought I had agoraphobia, because the dizziness seemed to get worse when I went into stores or public places with bright or fluorescent lights. I thought I was losing my mind and my life. Christmas is coming so I had to force myself to try and shop. Ironically, because of all the hustle and bustle, I forgot to take the Prilosec that day and I was able to shop with very little dizziness! Before this, I would have to leave stores because the dizziness got so bad. My husband thought I went back on it the following day and said this would be the test to see if the Prilosec was the culprit. But, I hadn't taken it for the 2nd day and I was able to shop for almost 6 hours and felt like myself again! I know Prilosec was the cause of my feeling like I was going to die for almost a year now! I was about to contact a psychiatrist, it was getting so bad. Unfortunately, after the 3rd day, the heartburn got so bad, I had to take the Prilosec again and I feel awful again. Helped the heartburn, but all the horrible side-effects are back. After the holidays, I'm calling my doctor to see if she can put me on something else.

I am 57yr. old male who has been taking Omeprazole continuously for 7yrs., not knowing that it should not be taken more than 14days at a time, this was never stipulated on the bottle,my bad for not reading the accompanying side effects brochure, some of the effects I experienced were sweating, dizziness, weak legs, hair loss, fatigue, depression, joint pain, loss of sexual drive, erection dysfunction, difficulty in urinating, and most embarrassing of all, enlargement of breast. Starting today I am finished with Omeprazole, thank God for this site,I thought I was just getting old.

I have been taking Omeprazole for about 2 months and since the start of taking it I have had stomach cramps that range from slight discomfort to buckling pain that is almost unbearable, my hands and feet swell weekly and it was substantial enough for my wife to notice without question, also I have been experiencing nausea more frequently and more severe the longer I continue to take the medicine, I have occasional joint pain most often at night making it sometimes impossible to sleep, I've struggled with depression before and am not sure if the medicine is causing it or not but my wife says she has noticed a change in my attitude since being on Omeprazole, As far as other side effects I have developed a rash on my inner thigh that seems to coincide with starting the medication, also I have had sharp headaches behind my eyes probably about twice a week lasting anywhere from ten minutes to half the day

I've been taking Omeprazole 40mg's once daily for two weeks now. I'm 28 years old and up until September have never been sick a day in my life. After an endoscopy, was diagnosed with a "hiatal hernia" after months of a mysterious vomiting syndrome and put on this drug by my Gastroenterologist.
The first week and a half was great, it was able to control my vomiting. But now, after thirteen days of taking the drug, I've been feeling incredibly fatigued over my whole body, like the way you feel the day after you lift weights. Stabbing pains in my ribs, chest and abdomen that come and go. The feeling in my stomach of being "eaten" from the inside out. It's horrible.
Like others, I've also been getting quick, stabbing headaches that come and go in a flash. Joint pain. Muscle cramps. Bloating. Depression. Waking multiple times in the middle of the night. Strange and vivid dreams. Severe nausea in the morning when I wake up. It's all really, really weird. And as of last night, my vomiting has relapsed. Keep in mind, I've NEVER experienced ANYTHING like these symptoms before in my life.
I've got a follow-up appointment scheduled with my doctor in three days and I intend to get off of this stuff immediately.
