Been on Omeprazole for 5 days, no side effects to start with and it does seem to have reduced the burning in my stomach slightly, but just today I feel like I've done a heavy aerobics class, all my muscles ache, which makes me feel even more tired and out of sorts than before.
I am on Omeprazole to treat gastritis which might be what is causing iron deficiency anemia and B12 deficiency I have been diagnosed with. Many of the symptoms listed in other articles I had before I started Omeprazole - perhaps because of deficiencies. e.g. confusion and not being able to concentrate, utter tiredness, dizziness, massive leg cramps, blurred vision, occasional feeling of heavy heart beat, bloating, having to sleep sitting up, waking up far too early and not being able to sleep again, depression for no reason.

Over the past few months, I have been experiencing a variety of very bothersome symptoms and after trying to think of what medications I have recently started, the only two that I could come up with were Omeprazole and Celebrex. My symptoms are these: I have difficulty getting a "deep" breath. When I Iay down to sleep at night, I feel like I can hardly breathe. My face and neck are very swollen. I wake up in the morning with bright red cheeks and hot to the touch. I am extremely tired and depressed lately but have just thought that it was because of my increasingly bad health (chronic lower back pain and burning pain in my legs that has not "let up" for nearly 12 years now. I have recently gone on disability and this has been a very depressing experience for me after having worked and enjoyed working my entire life since I graduated high school). However, the extreme lethargy and depression I have been feeling has just been for about the past 6 to 9 months, and I started taking Omeprazole approximately November 2008. Other symptoms are swollen legs and feet....when I am out on a very hot summer day, my fingers become so swollen that by the time I get home, I cannot remove my rings from my fingers! I have begun to wake up in the morning with the most debilitating leg cramps! I have to hop out of bed and walk around to make them stop. My hip bones hurt so bad sometimes that I can hardly stand it! I have pain all over my body...it feels like it's in my bones. My joints are swollen and painful....I can hardly lift my leg and bend my knees to even get into my shower. My feet feel numb sometimes. I just ache all over! By the way.....I am a female...53 years old. Please.....has anyone else out there experienced any of these symptoms and have attributed them either to Omeprazole or Celebrex?? I feel like I'm about to lose my mind (by the way...that's another side effect I just thought of...I have a terrible time concentrating or focusing on anything! My paperwork is so backed up that soon the creditors will be after me!). But I just feel like I could lay down and sleep away the entire day and not give it a second thought. It is taking all the energy I have just to commit to typing out this posting! PLEASE HELP!! HAS ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE EXPERIENCED THE SAME SIDE EFFECTS I HAVE AND ARE BLAMING IT ON OMEPRAZOLE (OR CELEBREX?). I am on a variety of medications because of 3 failed back surgeries, however, these are the only 2 medications that I have RECENTLY begun taking. THANKS FOR ANY HELP THAT ANYONE CAN GIVE ME!!

I began taking omeprazole in early june for burning in my stomach for gerd. I started with 20mg twice a day. I felt extremely bloated. I couldn't eat, or lay down. I had to sleep sitting up, and even that didn't work. I was regurgitating the little food I ate. I told my doctor, and he told me to go down to just one pill a day. The bloating went down for about four days, and then came back. I am not on this drug anymore... it has been two weeks. I had an endoscopy yesterday, and I was told that there was a bit of inflammation in my lower esophogus, and stomach (no bleeding). Well the burning pain is gone, but now I am dealing with indigestion. I get a full stomach after only a few bites of food. I am only able to eat one meal a day. I can't drink much water because of the full feeling I have all day. I am very frustrated since I can barely eat (I feel dizzy as a result). I think this drug has thrown my digestive system off balance as I did not have these symptoms before the drug. I understand that this drug changes the ph of the stomach acid as well as lessening the production of it. Because of this, it can potentially bring a bacterial infection, and digestive enzymes cannot help digest food under these conditions. Gastritis can come about from the bacteria, and if I am lucky and do not have this, well I may have indigestion due to lack of certain enzymes. I am trying to get to the bottom of this. I bought digestive enzymes to take, but I want to get a blood test first to check to see if I am lacking this. Is anyone having the same symptoms as me? I will update.

I have been taking 40mg Omeprazole (by APOTEX) for one week. At 3am Saturday 6/20/2009, I woke up with a severe itchy rash from head to foot. Over four hours, I took 125mg of Benadryl, but the rash got worse, At noon, I went to the Emergency Room at UPMC Shady side. They gave me intravenous steroids, but this had no immediate effect, After three more hours, they admitted me to the hospital. It wasn't until almost midnight before I began to have relief. I was discharged the next day. I have been instructed to never take Omeprazole again.

I prescribed Omeprazole about 8 days ago. After several days I started feeling heart palpitations, shortness of breath, tightness in my chest and I was extremely nervous. I couldn't sleep at night because the symptoms were worse when I would lay down. I was ready to call my doctor and have my heart checked meanwhile I kept searching the internet about the meds I take. Then I find postings about Omeprazole and so many people are describing the same symptoms as I am having. I stopped taking the medication 2 days ago and the symptoms are subsiding. I see where it takes several days to get totally out of ones body because it is an extended release capsule. This drug needs to be re-evaluated by the company.

I just started Omeprazole two weeks ago and am having headaches, extreme blurred vision, upset stomach, gas and constipation. I was depressed all day today which is also unusual for me. I will be asking my doctor to take me off this drug - unfortunately I do need something to treat the acid reflux so I will be researching nexium.
Good luck to anyone who has to take this - oh and I too have had the nightmares and can't sleep.

I just started taking omeprazole (Zegerid) 3 days ago and I have woken up in the middle of the night the past two nights with a pounding heart and been unable to go back to sleep. I have never had anything like that before, and I plan on stopping the omeprazole right away. Has anyone else had this happen to them? And if you quit, how long did it take before you could sleep again?

After taking Omeprazole for about a year, I became unusually fatigued. I just wanted to lie down and sleep. The acid reflux was under control, but I could not function from being so tired. Once I stopped taking the Omeprazole, the fatigue is gone. I can deal better with the acid reflux than with the drug side effects.

I've been on Omeprazole for about 8 weeks now for acid reflux and for the last six weeks or so I've suffered from a very dry mouth (constantly drinking water!!), sore throat, occasional headaches and insomnia in that I'm finding it increasingly hard to get off to sleep. When I do get to sleep and I wake up I feel like death, my mouth, throat and nose feel like they're full of mucus that won't shift.
For the last week or so I've felt like my mouth and lips are swollen up - I've only just read the side effects on the leaflet with the tablets and several of my symptoms are listed on there so I'm thinking it's not psychological, has anyone else had a similar allergic-type reaction?
My GP has advised me to come off the Omeprazole when I finish my current box, but having read the side effects I'm coming off them tomorrow.

I just stumbled across this site and it has given me such renewed hope. I have GERD and have been on 40 MG of pantoprazole for about two months. My DR suggested taking two pills a day (one in the morning, one at night) for two weeks to see if that helped my lingering problems. It did. So much so I started eating like an animal again. Of course, this it me hard in the throat. In a panic (insurance wouldn't cover two pills a day) I added Prilosec OTC as my nightly solution. I had already noticed pins and needles in my arms and legs slowly developing. Exactly two days after including the Prilosec I was instantly hit with a panic attack and extreme anxiety literally out of no where. I had nothing on my mind and absolutely content moments before and then in a totally different mind set. I had paranoia and abnormal thoughts. I didn't sleep for almost 5 days (with a few hours here and there). I am 31 and have never had anything like this anxiety and like other readers here thought I was going crazy. I stopped the OTC when I thought it was the culprit and four days later I am doing a bit better. Reading the stories here I believe I am stopping the omeprazole starting tomorrow to see if I get even better. I feel like my entire body is shaking from this stuff and it is the only thing I have changed or added to my life. Thank you all for your stories as I was grasping at straws.

I just googled "Prilosec & weakness with sweating" and came up with this site. I have been on OTC Prilosec for at least 2 yrs. taking it off & on...mostly on (everyday). I have been getting more ill over the last 2 months than I have ever been! I am diagnosed with Firbomyalgia & CFS, so I keep blaming my worsening symptoms on those two diseases. My doctor has done so many tests & can't find any answers. I am so glad I found this site. My symptoms of severe weakness, & profuse sweating, with many heart palps, may be coming from the Prilosec. I am going off of it starting today to see if I get any relief. I will have to find something else for my acid reflux...no more medicine!! If anyone knows of a natural product or food to lessen the acid, I would love to hear!

My husband has been taking Omeprazole for about ten years now. About nine months ago he went in for a endoscopy and the doctor said she wanted to increase the omeprazole of 20mg 2xdaily because of the acid reflux. Several weeks after increasing this drug, my husband began getting very depressed. He losted all interest in our business and started having severe mood swings. He couldn't sleep at night, screaming with cramps in his legs, heart palpitations, blurred vision, ringing in ears, hot flashes, headaches behind the eyes. Some night I thought he was having a heart attack. It only got worse, hallucination began and horrible nightmares. He thought I was putting drugs and poison in his food. and felt like the world was against him. He became very violent toward me because of the hallucinations. We went for a follow up at his doctor and she suggested a psychiatry. Of course, my husband refused because he felt nothing was wrong, it was everyone else with the problem. His attacks got so bad, it was happen everyday, all day. We have two small children and we decided to split up for the children sake. My husband left for a week and when he left he refused to take the Omeprazole. He called me during that week and said he has felt great, he was able to sleep, no anxiety. He said to me if you are not putting drugs in my drink and food..it's got to be the omerprazole.
Of course the doctors said it's not possible...he has been off these pills for 8 days and it's unreal how this symptoms has disappeared. He is still having some side effects and withdraws. I don't know how long this will be in his system but I hope it goes away soon. THIS IS A DEVIL DRUG. He almost took his life and my too over OMEPRAZOLE. My doctor recently wrote this drug for me but I will not take it... We would never know about how serious this little pill for heartburn was if we didn't research it. When you get this drug from the pharmacy, they only list some side effects and not the serious one...How many more people out in the world is dealing with this same problem and not aware of these serious side effect. This almost destroyed our lives. WE NEED TO TAKE SOME KIND OF ACTION, SO THESE SERIOUS SIDE EFFECT HAVE TO BE LISTED..

I have always taken Prilosec but when I asked the dr for a new prescription , I was given the generic drug. I didnt take notice as I never have any side effect from any drug. Shortly after taking it, I started experiencing irregular heartbeats and pounding of my heart. I ended up in the emergency room but my ekg's , x'rays were fine. I ended up getting so anxious and nervous , the dr gave me valiem for my anxiety. I also experienced insomnia, hot flashes. Didnt know what was going on until three weeks later, I started reading on side effect of this drug and found out that a lot of people were experiencing the same symptoms I was. I immediately quit taking the drug and within a few days my symptoms started going away. I still get an occasion jerking on my stomach but its a lot better than it was when I was on the drug and didnt even know this was causing it.

11 days ago I had indigestion and following that I had continuous heartburn. Doctor said it was gastritis and prescribed me gaviscon and omeprazole. I took one omeprazole pill in the morning after breakfast everyday for 5 days when I started to have the following symptoms: bad cramps/aches on left shoulder blades/neck, cramps/pins and needles in left arm, numbing of hands at times, nausea, tightening of the chest, sweaty cold hands and feet and lastly the most painful of all, numbing of my throat! The doctor checked my throat many times and said that it is not swollen yet I am positive there is something wrong with it. It is actually not sore when I swallow, just feels numb and cloudy? Sometimes I can't yawn fully because my throat closes up when I do and I cannot speak too much as I get breathless. I see that people here have started getting these symptoms via a long term use of this medication and not mere 5 days. Either way, I stopped taking it since today however symptoms are still present and stronger than ever tonight. I cannot sleep as I am too afraid to, as I have also been getting very vivid nightmares. I have started taking Ranitidine (twice a day)from today and I am a bit nervous about whether it is going to bring me nasty side effects too or not. I really just want the omeprazole's side effects to go away first but it seems as though it may actually take some time.... anyone had this numb throat which has caused difficulties in breathing? I also couldn't go to sleep before because when I would lie down my chest and throat felt like they were closing up even more and if I tried to sleep I would feel as though I couldn't breathe. Does Randitine cause nightmares!?
