I AM A 42 YR OLD WOMAN WHO JUST FOUND OUT I AM PREGNANT. A WEEK PRIOR TO FINDING OUT I HAVE HAD CRAMPING, THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE TUBAL SO I WENT TO THE HOSPITAL AND EVERYTHING WAS RIGHT WHERE IT WAS SUPPOSE TO BE. HOWEVER, THE DOCTOR ON CALL SAID THAT I HAD A SMALL INFECTION IN THE LOWER REGION AND PRESCRIBED THIS OMNICEF. IT HAS BEEN GOING ON 4 DAYS NOW SINCE STARTED TAKING THIS DRUG AND I DON'T KNOW IF THE INFECTION HAS CLEARED BUT I KNOW THE CRAMPS ARE STILL THERE AND I HAVE THE DIS-COLORED STOOLS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE...AFTER READING 2 PAGES OF TESTIMONIES, I HAVE DECIDED TO STOP TAKING THIS DRUG IN FEAR THAT IT MIGHT DO SOMETHING TO HARM MY UNBORN CHILD.

my 9 month old was put on this medication for an ear infection last week. 24 hours after taking the first does she began throwing up and continued for 3 days doing that. I finally stopped giving it to her once I figured it was the medication causing her to throw up and called her doctor and have asked for something different. She is obviously allergic to it. She also had bad diarrhea and became dehydrated almost to the point that I was about to take her to the ER. I don't like this drug at all!

I'm a sixteen-year-old girl and I was put on Amoxacillin after the doctor said I had Bronchitis, along with liquid codeine.. The codeine caused me to pass out less than 4 hours after first dose. Along with passing out I also went blind for about 20 minutes and couldn't hear. When I didn't get better from that my doctor prescribed me Omnicef. I threw up the next day after taking it and I also am constantly nauseous and sleep way too much. I am really tired all the time too, no matter how much I sleep. And my 'private area' smells like alcohol. I also am having back and lower pelvic pain. This is ridiculous. Screw this drug. The FDA should NOT have okay'd it. Anyone else have these problems?

I took 500 mg of Omnicef and then had a bowl of ice cream. About 5 hours later I became violently ill with vomiting, nausea and light headedness. I thought I had food poisoning. A week later, I did the same thing, had the same reaction and realized it was the combination of Omnicef and the ice cream (just happened to be a different kind of ice cream too).
Do NOT take omnicef and anything with calcium, including ICE CREAM!

My 11 year old daughter took 2 doses of omnicef for a bacterial infection in her throat. A few hours after the second dose she complained of severe pain inside her mouth (roof of mouth gums were bright red around her teeth) sais is feels like she has acid in her mouth.. Took her back to doctor they said this could not be a side affect. Called pharmacy they told me yes this could be a side affect but RARE. It is going on three days since the second dose (stopped after complaint) and she still cannot eat or drink much because of the pain in her mouth. We are going to the dentist to see if they can help. Has anyone experienced this type of side affect.

i'm a 19 year old college student, and i'm on my last 3 days of this medication, and while i had bad side effects at first, i waited them out, and now they're mostly gone. i had stomach cramps, that gassy feeling, i was dizzy and felt faint...i felt like i was in a cloud and couldn't function. however, it was better than the misery i was experiencing from the sinus infection, where i was only able to sleep. i can return to work, and some side effects still linger , but its def. done its job as an antibiotic. i did develop a yeast infection from the antibiotic i took before omnicef, which is why i didn't want to change medicines again. i was on another antibiotic, which made me deathly sick. omnicef is supposed to have less severe side effects than other bacterial infection antibiotics out there. i did take a probiotic with the omnicef, i recommend taking one with any antibiotic. it levels out your bacteria levels, which may stop stomach problems altogether.

I was diagnosed with severe sinusitis a week ago, and my doctor prescribed omnicef for me since I was allergic to PENICILLIN. After the first day on Omnicef, I felt fine, perhaps a little better. As days continued to pass, however, I began to get some horrible reactions. They started out mild, and now (after taking it for the seventh day) I have major tongue and gland swelling in addition to a horrible headache and weakness. I've felt close to fainting several times throughout the past several days. I went through a random bout of depression a couple days ago, too, and there was no reason why. I feel more irritable, but I've been attempting to control it. I haven't lashed out wrongly at my loved ones yet, but I've come pretty close. I have some pain in my lower abdomen (where the intestines are located) as well, but only when I walk in a quick manner. No diarrhea, yet, but I think that's because I normally have digestion problems (constipation). Some of the joints in my hands are acting funny. They aren't as strong as usual, and they've been going numb/cold more often, causing their movements to be a little slower/stalled.
I'm seventeen, and when my mom contacted the doctor yesterday, the doctor said that "these aren't allergies/side effects" of this medication, and that I need to continue taking them. So I took them again yesterday (the seventh day), and that's when the swelling of the tongue and glands in my throat took place. When my mom called today and notified the doctor of that issue, the doctor said that..oh, how was that worded... That "it's the first time I've had this reaction" (while on this medication), and that it isn't caused by that medication but from something else. I'm sorry, but I'm not taking any other medications, and I haven't eaten anything strange/new that would cause me these difficulties. It's definitely the medication.
I'm done with this medication. After doing research on it this morning, I've learned that at least ten percent of those allergic to penicillin is also allergic to omnicef, and I'm allergic to penicillin. Why my doctor is being so stubborn about these reactions, I don't know. I guess this is just an example of a doctor who isn't well-educated and sticks ONLY to the side-effects/allergic reactions listed on the prescription bottle. If problems persist, my mom will take me to another doctor. For now, I'm going to stick to the Neti pod and nasal spray to try to rid me of my sinusitis. Maybe it'll work out alright and my problems from this medication will go away quickly. I'm sick of being sick all summer.

I was given omnicef for a sinus infection, though I was told to take it twice a day , ive only been taking it once a day , due to an unnormal schedule... It has caused me to be so uncomfortable..I cant stand it. I have unbelievable abdominal pain, cramps ... but no diarrhea... Im constipated , one bowel movement a day ... and I also have the rust/ red stools. which is a listed side effect . Ironically, Before being diagnosed with all of this, I was in the doctors office a few weeks earlier complaining of stomach problems. . thinking I may have an ulcer, and my doctor told me It was only stress... yet he never tested me for an ulcer, no x-ray , nor an endoscopy. Now Im on some medicine that apparently may mess me up even more. WOW.

(33yr) Was given Omnicef for an ear infection. After 3rd dose broke out with huge patches of red whelps. Stop taking, but then my joints started to ache and I had large knots on the bottom of my feet and hands. Diarrhea and vomiting, severe stomache cramps and low blood pressure... followed by antiphylatic shock. While I was in the ER the discovered I was also having a heart attack.
It has been 3 weeks and every time I come off the steroids, the rash and other symtoms return.
Has anyone else had similar problems.

My 9 month little girl took omnicef and developed a rash after her second dose. I took her to the doctor - they thought she had either roseola or hand foot and mouth.....By the time I got her home that afternoon and some time had passed - it developed more and looked awful. I called the doctor back and she informed me that with roseola or hand, foot and mouth it would get worse before it got better. That night my baby was very uncomfortable, could not sleep and kept trying to scratch the rash through . The next morning, I called the doctor back because by this time she looked like she had a horrible sunburn and it continued to worsen. The pediatrician then thought she was having a reaction, suggested benadryl for two days and then switched her to augmentin. We will begin taking that tomorrow morning - I am a little nervous because I hope not only that it will work but that she will not have any side effects like she had with ominicef. As far as taking omnicef, my other children have taken it and they were fine -but as for my baby I had it documented on her chart at the doctors office and at the pharmacist so that they will stay away from all medicines that are in the omnicef family. I hope that I will never have to see this again nor deal with it. Jenifer

My 4 year old daughter was on omnicef for two days for an ear infection. She is now covered from head to toe in a nasty red rash. The rash on her cheeks looks as though the bumps have all meshed into one huge red bump. Her entire cheeks are bright red. The dr said it was an allergic reaction to the meds and changed her to Septra. I don't want to start her new meds until the rash is gone but it isn't showing signs of improvement as of day 3. I am wondering if anyone could tell me how long the rash lasts? Should I start her new meds for the ear infection anyway? And she is sooooo moody. Her meltdowns are on a nuclear level which is out of character.

Went to the doctor week and half ago for flu and found out that i had ear infection and bronchitis also.. Dr. prescribed omnicef this time.. (300mg - two pills once a day) and i took the 10 day course.. infection somewhat cleared.. but i had tremendous stomach cramps and loose stools, gas, bloating, etc.. I thought that those effects might have been part of my flu... and after being off the antibiotic for 3-4 days, they started to go away.. so.. went to the doctor two days ago and she wanted me to do another 10 day course of the omnicef to finish clearing up my ear infection and bronchitis.. the same night i started this course.. (last night).. i immediately had the stomach cramps, gas, etc.. all over again.. i am convinced it is this antibiotic and will be calling the doc in the morning.. i AM NOT taking any more of this stuff.. the side effects are debilitating

My 4 yr old is on it now and after reading all of your comments I am able to see similar side effects in my girl. Initially, she had diarrhea but it cleared up after two days and a lot of pro-biotics. Then we began to notice how excessively tried and drawn she was. Looking back on this last week she has also been irritable. I had attributed it all to her being sick, possibly the change in season but now I'm thinking it was this antibiotic.

My 1 year old was prescribed Omnicef for a possible sinus infection. Before she started taking this med she had a little cough and a runny nose, not that bad at all. The doctor thought she should go on this for 14 days to help. She has been on the med for 4 days, and her symptoms have gotten worse. She is coughing all the time, she is having massive maroon colored runny stools, and she has a horrible diaper rash. She has started to get a welt on her thigh, and rash around her cheeks and chin. I am currently waiting for the doctor to call us back regarding the problems she is having. I am so glad I found this website, and know that I am not being paranoid. My daughter is the most even keeled baby you will ever meet, but the last couple of days she has been crying all the time as if she is in pain. I have stopped the medication and will never allow her to take this medicine again!!!!

Be aware that "Brick Red Stools" in children can suggest a bleed from Mackel's diverticulum and hence must be referred to a paediatrician. Mackel's diverticulum is a congenital condition. The bleeding usually settles on its own but very rarely the child can become severely anaemic and may need a blood transfusion. Surgical intervention also is very rare.

My doctor gave me omnicef for a sinus infection and I must say that I felt much better before the I started the medicine. From the first day I had most of all the side effects, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, no appetite, but no muscle/joint pain. However, since I finished the last pill, I have been experiencing extreme right leg pain in the hamstring area and below. Actually, my whole leg hurts like heck! I have been doing leg exercises and taking ibuprofen, but how long must I do this. It has been going on for 2 1/2 weeks now. I too will never take this medicine again. I am not even sure that it even helped my sinus situation, but if it did, it also caused way more problems than I had or ever expected.

My kids have both taken Omnicef in the past and they are on it now again. They are 5 and 2.5 years old. The biggest thing I have noticed is that their behavior has changed. They are quick to go into meltdowns and cry very easily. They do not get along as well as they usually do. There is no doubt that this medication is the cause. My 2.5 year old is finished as of today but my 5 year old has 4 more days to go.

Received script for 300mg 2x per day for 10 days to treat ear infection and sever chest congestion. At the time the only side effect was sensitive skin & lots of itching, combined with a very mild diarrhea. Here is the crazy thing: now that it has been 30-40 days since I was on the antibiotic, my toe nails have grown out and you can see that it has killed the old nail in front of the new growth. My brother is a physician & he said it is weird, but not out of the question.

My five year old was in the hospital for 4 days for a sinus infection and they put her on Omnicef. My daughter is a very cheerful little girl and these last couple of days she has been everything but cheerful. Its as she has turned into a demon over night. She has been having the worst mood swings. She has been screaming, yelling back, and kicking her legs and just being really mean. I remember the nurse advising me the possibility of a change in mood swings but I never imagined this. Omnicef did it's purpose BUT I hope to never have to use it again. I was not prepared for the mood swings my child acted out. I thought it was just my child until I started reading online and asking around.

Our 3 year old son took Omnicef starting on a Friday. By Sunday, we were at the end of our rope. He was screaming constantly, we could not get him to go to sleep, he started being VERY aggressive.... kicking growling, hitting and just acting out in ways we'd never seen. My husband finally started looking online after our son had a fit and screamed in a corner of our house for 30 minutes, then looked at us and started laughing and acting like nothing had happened. We found this web site, and to our relief, realized our son was not just acting out. I have NO DOUBT it was the antibiotic and I can't believe this medicine made it onto the market!!! I threw the bottle away and intend to talk to our pediatrician asap.

Not thinking it had anything to do with the Omnicef,I took her to the ER.The Dr. said that this was an allergic reaction to Omnicef, even though it took 8 days to show itself. After reading some of the other post I remembered that she also hasn't been sleeping well. She woke up screaming on night and said that someone was in the bed with her.It all makes sense now.My child will never take this med. again!

My child was prescribed Omnicef for an ear infection on Tuesday and we ended up taking him off on Friday night. He is normally a happy, hyper, normal 3 yr old but he became very mean!! We didn't know what was going on with him. We just thought that maybe he was acting out, until we talked to some one who knows about food allergies who asked if anything was different in his diet. The only thing that was different was he started this new anti-biotic. He had an allergic reaction to Amoxicillin and we told the doctor. but he still put him on this medication anyway. Our son changed so much in this last week it is just unbelievable. On the second day of this medication he actually tried to bite some older gentleman at a dental clinic. Just not his normal behavior. He didn't sleep well, would literally kick, hit, punch, pinch and bite us and his siblings. Since we took him off this medicine he is finally acting like his normal only self. We had not realized until he started to giggle about something that he had not laughed since he started his medicine. There is no way that he will ever take this medicine again and after reading all the information on OMNICEF I do not understand why they keep pushing this drug since there are so many harmful side effects (half of which they do not list)!! I just hope that this has not done any other damage to my son internally as well...

I was on the drug for over a week and didn't really notice the chest pain because of all the coughing I was doing from my sinus infection. It wasn't till three days after I finished taking the drugs that the pain became more frequent. Has any one felt this?

I'd like to start off by saying though many people have had some very bad reactions to this medication, that it is not a reason for it to be taken off the market. everyones body's have different reactions to different medications and while for some it may be a very negative reaction, for others it may be a very good or significant one. I'm 17 years old and currently taking Omnicef for a sinus infection. I am having side effects but the fact is a few days ago I was miserably sick, and now I am feeling significantly better. so though I am having side effects, the benefit of this medication, or at least for me, is that my sinus infection is most definitely getting better. my side effects have been gas and nausea (which I usually have regardless from GERD), bad dreams and restless sleep, and this is quite odd but fowl smelling urine and body odor. I haven't read about anyone else noticing body odor after taking it though so if someone has noticed this can you please let me know? thank you.

My son was diagnosed with his first ear infection at 12 months old. He was prescribed Amoxicillin, but broke out in an allergic rash. We were then prescribed Omnicef ($50 WITH insurance!). He wasn't even on it for 24 hours and started vomiting anything and everything he put in his stomach. I gave him about a day to see if it was a stomach virus, but it continued. I called the doctor's office who told me to take him off the Omnicef and see if the vomiting continued. Within 24 hours, all vomiting stopped, so I called the doctor's office back and was given our 3rd and final antibiotic...Zithromax...which was the cheapest of the three.

My 19 month old was hospitalized for 3 days with a high fever and all the symptoms that go with ...ie: body ache, fatigue, loss of appetite, dehydration. this took place after a 10 day amoxicillin course. In the hospital they started Omnicef via iv. after getting home he seemed to slowly get back to himself, with a few issues...waking up with "night terrors" cranky, loud, clingy, loose stools. his fever was down but not gone and his cough and runny nose seemed to be getting better. that is until today. we are 8 days into a 10 day with Omnicef and today his fever has returned (back up to 101 to 102) and his nose is running again. so 2 antibiotics down what next. between, all tests in the hospital came back negative until the blood culture came back and determined a blood infection. I am calling the hospital pediatric doctor in the morning to report on his repeat symptoms

I have been very moody, downright evil to my family...and I didn't know why. My 6 mos. old daughter has been on Omnicef for about 3-4 days now, AND she is also dealing with some constipation...today she had about 3 clay like stools that were red-orange and then tonight another one was completely brick red/maroon. It didn't really look like a typical bloody stool, but I was nervous due to her constipation and straining when trying to get it out. I called the triage nurse and she said it was from the Omnicef...thank God she's not actually bleeding!
It was very alarming though, and we almost went to the ER. Hopefully her resp. infection and constipation will subside and she will get to feeling better soon!

My daughter was prescribed Omnicef for an ear infection. Almost a week into the dosing she developed a severe rash all over her body. She also was very "sensitive" while on the meds, which it's hard to tell if it was the meds or just not feeling well. But my son has been on this med before and had the orange/red stools. After reading all of these posts I will never allow him to take this medication again. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that we have seen the worst of her rash and she can start to get on the road to recovery.

My 16 yr old son was prescribed this drug 9 days ago for a severe sinus infection. He came home from school yesterday with several small raised welts on the creases of his arms. I took him immediately back to his Dr who said he was having an allergic reaction, prescribed steroids and said it would get worse before it got better. Within a few hours his elbows had visible knots in different places, then his knees did the same thing, then his feet started getting knots on the bottom and he had different whelps breaking out on his torso and lower stomach. We immediately took him to the ER last night when he said his tongue "felt funny". The attending immediately diagnosed an acute severe allergic reaction and gave him a huge steroid and Benadryl dose. He released him because the itching had stopped and his tongue no longer felt funny. Last night he kept drenching himself with sweat during sleep. Today so far some of the whelps are gone but he has some pretty severe joint involvement with visible knots around the elbow and knees and feet.

My daughter is 9 years old and was prescribed Omnicef for a sinus infection. 48 hours after first taking her dosage, she was in a deep depression. It was as if her "light" went out. She cried, worried and obsessed about things that she didn't even understand. Many times she said that she had no idea why she was sad and crying. I took her to the school psychologist who couldn't put her finger on any certain concern either. This went on for 2 weeks. Exactly 48 hours after stopping the drug, the light came back on. She has been fine ever since. Has anyone else ever had this happen to them?

my 15 mo old started Omnicef 7 days ago. She is generally a very happy smiling child since meds clingy, wakes up crying in middle of night, diarrhea for several days, rash in private area, grabs her throat as if hurts, rubs her head as if headache and today was her check up showed Dr. rash, she said put her on Dr. Smith's. Once home, she began screaming uncontrollably and clinching my neck I could feel her having bowel movement she had her legs straightened in pain. Her stool was bloody. Called nurse, said this can happen BC of tearing in the intestinal track. Told her that was unacceptable and I wanted to speak with the doctor; have not heard from them yet. Omnicef is actually one antibiotic my 2 year old has little trouble with. The red stools are alarming but at least they are solid. Currently he's on Augmentin which has caused horrible rash and loose stools.
The other nice thing about Omnicef is the dosing schedule.Usually once or twice daily depending on the infection. The 3x daily with Augmentin is way too much stress for me to bear, and for him even more so. Seeing his poor little red butt makes me cry with him. Since the two drugs can be used for the same infections, I will be asking for the Omnicef first from now on. Omnicef seems to clear his infections very quickly. The Docs really should forewarn about the red stools though, they are quite scary, even though they are typically harmless.

My 5 year old daughter has tolerated Omnicef will each of the 3 times she has taken it. She is allergic to penicillin. This time she was on day 9 of Omnicef when she developed some hives on her hands and trunk. By morning the hives are all over including her face, butt, waist line, feet. They are especially bad around her knees, wrists and elbows. This is causing her a lot of discomfort. She is taking Benadryl and Motrin to manage the pain.

This is the second time my 9 month old has been prescribed this antibiotic. The fist time, she was 5 months old and after 3 days had a 'rectal fissure' (supposedly since she had a positive test for bloody stool) and the medication was discontinued. Just about two weeks ago, she was prescribed it again. She had the red/rusty stools and I took her in and it was negative for blood. She has been refusing to eat and extremely irritable. After 7 days of this antibiotic, I took her back in for a recheck. Her ears were clear and the antibiotic was discontinued. She has been off of the antibiotic for 5 days now and is still irritable, having explosive diahrea diapers 4 to 5 times a day and refusing to eat. Currently we are monitoring her for dehydration and giving only pedialyte for feeds. She has had a total of 16 ounces yesterday and had 13 ounces today. She has had continued diahrea and has had 2 very barely wet diapers now.
My four year old was on this medication a couple of times and never had any trouble. I am concerned however about the reactions that have been experienced this time around. I hope that no other parent has to endure this with their child. Personally, I will request something other than Omnicef in the future.

I am very concerned with the bowel movements my 12 month old son has had. It even smells like blood. He has had four already. He has no appetite for table food and is barely drinking the bottle. He has been fussy and has not been playing the way he normally does. I called the nurse line and they said I definately need to call his doctor in the morning and take in the diaper to have it tested for blood. She said not to wake him up or take him to the er, though. I should have called yesterday, but I didn't know if it was a normal side effect or something to do with the iron supplement he just started. This is his 7th day on the meds. Now that I think back, he hasn't eaten well since the 4th day of antibiotic. I will call the doctor in the morning, especially since the comments on this site are mixed.

my 10 month-old was prescribed Omnicef suspension 5ml a day for a lingering cold that turned into a sinus infection, before that she had taken amoxicillin for ear infection.
took it for 10 days, was ok. 2 days after finishing taking the medication, she started her diarrhea/loose stool (no more than 2-3-4 BMs a day, just loose, runny, mucousy, light yellow (like yolk+sour cream mix)-green-ish color.
7 days into the diarrhea some black residue, filament/dill-like came out in the stool for three days. all this time the baby had been eating rice cereal, toast, and formula. What I'm saying is those things came out of her body, wasn't something she had eaten. Yesterday was the 10th day of loose stool, and took her to the ped. was prescribed Lactinex to restore stomach bacteria.
All this time the baby was not herself: waking up and crying at night (cramping, aching?), very clingy and whiny, turning her head at the sight of the solid food (rice regimen), lethargic at times, irritable, mood swings, sticking tongue out (dry mouth?), shuddering, crying when touched, picked up, put down on her feet to stand, her runny nose is back.
Last night she woke up at 2.30A CRYING in terror, lasted for about 2 hours on and off, by 5.30A was up and never gone back to sleep. She usually sleeps 12 hrs solid 7P-7A. She also had a BM- first in 36 hrs-which was the opposite of what she's been having for 10 days- hard, and some loose around, and a patching compound consistency, porous and sandy... She may have woken because of bloating, cramping, difficulty passing the stool. But the crying continued after she relieved herself.
Had I known about the side effects, or this forum before..I would have stopped the medication... Although it may have been difficult since the full-blown symptoms kicked in 2 days after finishing the 10 day Omnicef regimen.
If there is ever an FDA complaint to take this med off the market for good or for further testing, sign me in...

My daughter is 18 months old. She has a bad ear infection that doctor thinks that it is lingering since it has started a month ago. Omnicef was her 3rd dose of antibiotics that we tried after amoxicillin and augmentin. After her 2nd dose she started getting red in her cheeks and had loose bowels, after 4th dose she was covered with hives and rash all over her body, worst on her cheeks. After taking her to the doctors office, we were told that she has allergic reaction to omnicef. She was given benadryl (4x 1tspn per day),doctor said it might take a week for the rash to disappear and for the ear infection she was prescribed with zithromax ( 1tspn per day for 3 days). If anybody has experience with this kind of problem, I would appreciate some feedback.
