Went to the doctor week and half ago for flu and found out that i had ear infection and bronchitis also.. Dr. prescribed omnicef this time.. (300mg - two pills once a day) and i took the 10 day course.. infection somewhat cleared.. but i had tremendous stomach cramps and loose stools, gas, bloating, etc.. I thought that those effects might have been part of my flu... and after being off the antibiotic for 3-4 days, they started to go away.. so.. went to the doctor two days ago and she wanted me to do another 10 day course of the omnicef to finish clearing up my ear infection and bronchitis.. the same night i started this course.. (last night).. i immediately had the stomach cramps, gas, etc.. all over again.. i am convinced it is this antibiotic and will be calling the doc in the morning.. i AM NOT taking any more of this stuff.. the side effects are debilitating

Received script for 300mg 2x per day for 10 days to treat ear infection and sever chest congestion. At the time the only side effect was sensitive skin & lots of itching, combined with a very mild diarrhea. Here is the crazy thing: now that it has been 30-40 days since I was on the antibiotic, my toe nails have grown out and you can see that it has killed the old nail in front of the new growth. My brother is a physician & he said it is weird, but not out of the question.

Our 3 year old son took Omnicef starting on a Friday. By Sunday, we were at the end of our rope. He was screaming constantly, we could not get him to go to sleep, he started being VERY aggressive.... kicking growling, hitting and just acting out in ways we'd never seen. My husband finally started looking online after our son had a fit and screamed in a corner of our house for 30 minutes, then looked at us and started laughing and acting like nothing had happened. We found this web site, and to our relief, realized our son was not just acting out. I have NO DOUBT it was the antibiotic and I can't believe this medicine made it onto the market!!! I threw the bottle away and intend to talk to our pediatrician asap.

Omnicef is actually one antibiotic my 2 year old has little trouble with. The red stools are alarming but at least they are solid. Currently he's on Augmentin which has caused horrible rash and loose stools.
The other nice thing about Omnicef is the dosing schedule.Usually once or twice daily depending on the infection. The 3x daily with Augmentin is way too much stress for me to bear, and for him even more so. Seeing his poor little red butt makes me cry with him. Since the two drugs can be used for the same infections, I will be asking for the Omnicef first from now on. Omnicef seems to clear his infections very quickly. The Docs really should forewarn about the red stools though, they are quite scary, even though they are typically harmless.

This is the second time my 9 month old has been prescribed this antibiotic. The fist time, she was 5 months old and after 3 days had a 'rectal fissure' (supposedly since she had a positive test for bloody stool) and the medication was discontinued. Just about two weeks ago, she was prescribed it again. She had the red/rusty stools and I took her in and it was negative for blood. She has been refusing to eat and extremely irritable. After 7 days of this antibiotic, I took her back in for a recheck. Her ears were clear and the antibiotic was discontinued. She has been off of the antibiotic for 5 days now and is still irritable, having explosive diahrea diapers 4 to 5 times a day and refusing to eat. Currently we are monitoring her for dehydration and giving only pedialyte for feeds. She has had a total of 16 ounces yesterday and had 13 ounces today. She has had continued diahrea and has had 2 very barely wet diapers now.
My four year old was on this medication a couple of times and never had any trouble. I am concerned however about the reactions that have been experienced this time around. I hope that no other parent has to endure this with their child. Personally, I will request something other than Omnicef in the future.

I am very concerned with the bowel movements my 12 month old son has had. It even smells like blood. He has had four already. He has no appetite for table food and is barely drinking the bottle. He has been fussy and has not been playing the way he normally does. I called the nurse line and they said I definately need to call his doctor in the morning and take in the diaper to have it tested for blood. She said not to wake him up or take him to the er, though. I should have called yesterday, but I didn't know if it was a normal side effect or something to do with the iron supplement he just started. This is his 7th day on the meds. Now that I think back, he hasn't eaten well since the 4th day of antibiotic. I will call the doctor in the morning, especially since the comments on this site are mixed.

I took my first (and only) dose of Omnicef 4 days ago for a sinus infection and have not stopped having tummy problems. The smell or even thought of food makes me want to vomit, I have constant non-stop diarrhea. I feel woozy and sweaty and like I am going to faint. I'm very thirsty and tired. My stomach is contantly rubmling and cramping and feels gassy but is much much worse. This prescription cost so much and only caused me more pain and trouble. Pepto-Bismol has not helped. PLEASE REFUSE TO TAKE OMNICEF IF YOUR DR. PRESCRIBES. I'd take a sinus infection over this any day. It terrifies me to think this is being prescribed for children...I am 34 and can not image what it must be like for a little one to have to go through this. I am going to find out what I can do NATURALLY to fix my stomach problems and take care of my sinus infection. Monday I'll look for a NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIAN to consult with in the future! P.S. The person who recommended taking a PROBIOTIC was right. I am going to begin taking ACIDOPHILUS.

Well guess i wont be going back to his office. I had an ear infection and sore throat. After taking the antibiotic, i had black loose stool and a rash all over my body. I stopped the medecine. I called the dr and was told to stop the medicine. I still have the rash .

5 days ago i was prescrebed omnicef for the treatment of bronchitis. i have been experiencing increasing fatigue while on the drug. today i woke up practically incapasitated with muscular fatigue and mental confusion. i called to convey the side effects to my doctor and pharmacist and they both said that fatigue was not a side effect. i am so disturrbed by this side effect because i actually had more energy last week when my bronchitis was untreated by an antibiotic. after a self directed study of the drug, i discovered that omnicef actually dramatically decreases the amount of carnitine in the body. carnitine is necessary for the proper metabolic process of fats into energy. i am suspicious that the withdrawl of carnatine in an already ill individual is responsible for the lathargy and mood instability that so many on this web posting have attested to.

My 7 month old daughter was prescribed omnicef for an ear infection. It was her 4th antibiotic in 3 months for an ear infection that would not go away. After taking her second dose, I found this site and prepared myself for what might occur. A week after finishing her 10 days on omnicef, we were told by her doctor that her ears looked normal for the first time in 3 months. She never had any side effects except the reddish stool which we were warned about by her doctor. She is such a happy baby now that she is no longer in pain and discomfort from her ear infections and I thank God that she was healed and for this medication.
There will always be side effects for certain people with any medication taken. We were just lucky our baby didn't suffer any that so many on this site have suffered.

I stopped taking Omnicef and I am going to call the Nurse Practitioner tomorrow to ask for a different antibiotic.

I was diagnosed with sinusitis, bronchitis and tonsillitis when I was prescribed Omnicef 2 weeks ago. I began taking it immediately. Terrible black diarrhea began the next day continued during the entire course of antibiotic and now after finishing the medication four days ago I have persistent diarrhea that is clear with some bile. This has never happened to me before and now I am very concerned after reading everyone else's reaction. Why is this stuff being prescribed??? Sorry if the descriptions are too graphic....

I have been prescribed Omnicef for cystic acne for 9 months. I continuously suffer from vaginal/anul itching. The medication helps alittle with the acne but the itching and burning makes my life a living hell. I will take the medication for a while and then get so fed up with the itching and frequent trips to the bathroom. I thought something was wrong with me. I would not prescribe this to a young child. i am shocked to see so many parents posting their children's symptoms. I can barely stand it, I can only imagine what a child feels like on this medication. Definetly not the greatest antibiotic out there. My dermatologist said it was mild as vaginal itching was something I said I did not want to experience. Unfortunetly I am stuck with it!

My cousins 5 year old daughter had a horrible experience with onmifef. She also had a terrible ear infection for which the antibiotic was prescribed. She woke up on the 10th day swollen from head to toe, terrible rash all over her body, fever, etc. Took her to pediatrician and he immediately sent her to children's hospital. There they were told by 3 different physicians, serum allergy. I cannot believe a physician would prescribe this after I had seen all the comments on this site. This is just horrible and to hear what all these young children have had to suffer just irritates me to no end. Something must be done about this medication!

My 7 month old daughter has only taken her second dose of omnicef. This is her 4th antibiotic in a row for an ear infection that started 3 months ago. So far she hasn't had any problems with this antibiotic (and luckily any other antibiotic), but I will definately be paying closer attention to her behavior at night after reading this. She really hasn't slept very well since she has been sick anyway. She has had red looking stools, but her MD told me she would so I wasn't concerned.

I was prescribed Omnicef for Strep throat and an ear infection. I have had strep throat several times in the past but this was my first time taking Omnicef. Besides not feeling better until about the 5th day of taking it, I got severe diarrhea and nausea. I contacted the doctor and he told me to "stick with it" and he was confident it would make me better. Two days after finishing every last pill the strep throat was back. I would never recommend this antibiotic to anyone and I refuse to ever take it again. I am now on Penicillen and began feeling better immediatly.

We also had two terrible experiences with the drug Omnicef. It was prescribed to both of my sons for double ear infections about one week apart. On this medicine, my 18 month old had very strange loose stools and wouldn't sleep at night at all. He woke up about every 30 minutes screaming and I could tell he was uncomfortable & in pain. I wasn't sure what to do. My doctor extended the length of time for him to be on the medicine...from 10 days to 14 days, because the ear infections would not clear up. I should have known it was the medicine, but I just found this site, and I will never put my kids on this antibiotic again! It was torture for both of my kids.
My three year old had a very similar experience. He had very odd loose stools throughout the entire time he was on this medicine, he had no appetite, wouldn't sleep, was extremely moody and uncomfortable throughout the entire 10 days. He would wake uo screaming in pain and had constant night sweats. We went back to the doctor and even after taking the medicine for the full 10 days, his ear infections weren't gone. He was prescribed Augmentin and is doing much better on it.
What a frustrating ordeal! And I have always heard Omnicef is such a "good" antibiotic...not to mention outrageously expensive!!! But, I will never use it again! EVER!

I started taking omnicef for a sinus/ear infection and on the 5th day, I had horrible cramping, diarrhea, wanted to throw up, sweating, etc. also had black, I mean black stools. I went into the doctor and he said the antibiotic was causing my stomach to be irritated and bloody, causing the black stools. He put me on Flagil for the above problems and things cleared up. I did an endoscopy and found that my stomach was red and irriated from the Omnicef! Stay away from that drug!!!! Augmenten is still the best drug for ear infections....we should have them take Omnicef off of the market...it is also very expensive!

I was treated with Omnicef for a suspected case of pneumonia (they didn't even do a chest x-ray to confirm this). About 4 days into my treatment I developed very bad diarrhea with mucus and blood. A few days later I began having fever, body aches, and throwing up. I went into the ER for dehydration, at which point they told me that Omnicef can cuase these symptoms. 11 days later, I still have no appetite and continue with the diarrhea. No one told me about these possible side effects. Do not take this antibiotic!!! I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

I was prescribed Omnicef for Strep thorat. I am 41 year old female. As a result of taking this antibiotic, I developed a little known toxin called Clostridium difficile. A infection of the colon. Three different doctors told me that this was a result of taking this antibotic. Some antibotics can produce the same infection. I have never had this before from any other antibiotic.

My 6 year old, 4 year old and myself a 35 year old were all placed on Omnicef for "upper respiratory infections". We all had the diarrhea, which I expected.... I had the yeast infection, however it seemed to spread to the "rear end" area. Even my young kids said it "hurt" when they had a bowel movement. I have been off this stuff for 2 weeks and we all still have "issues". I never want this antibiotic again!

I mentioned to my husbsand that this may be a side effect and he thought we should stop the drug. I am concerned that if we stop the medication she will relapse....she has had a severe sinus infection and this is her third antibiotic since none of the others seem to be have been effective. I have not noticed any red stools with her but it is still possible.

I took my 18 month old son to the Ped two days ago because he had been running a high fever after a cold so I assumed it was an ear infection. It turned out to be a sinus infection so she prescribed Omnicef. I gave it to him right away and almost immediately started noticing a rash after I had given it to him. I thought maybe it was roseola so I continued giving to him. Last night his fever shot back up to 103. I am not totally sure its the medicine because he has never taken an antibiotic before. I really think it is though.

On day 5 she had a very bloddy stool, we took her to the hospital and tested it, the results were negative. They did not tell us it could be a side effect form the antibiotic just to stop taking it. My 3 year old was prescribed Omnicef for an ear infection. After the 1st dose he began waking at night with "Night Terrors". I called the doctor's office and they said that this was not a side effect and is common for this age. We continued to give him the medicine and his "Night Terrors" continued every night and every time he woke up from a nap. After the third day of Omnicef he started to become nervous and scared and not as nice as he usually was. He was afraid of the dark and did not want to go to bed. On the fifth day of medication he had 3 episodes of which he was so scared that he was screaming, and shaking and said he was "having a bad dream" but he was awake. I asked him what was in his dream and he pointed to the window and said "there is a monster out there". It was horrible! I called the doctor after the first episode and the nurse said that this was not one of the side effects and to continue the medicine. However, my husband and I decided not to give him any more Omnicef. We told the nurse that we didn't care if it wasn't a side effect and that it was too coincidental that this started exactly when he started taking Omnicef. The doctor would not call in a different antibiotic but said 5 days of Omnicef should be enough for his ear infection and he will see our son in three days for a recheck. Today was the second day without Omnicef and our son seems to be getting back to his normal, happy self. He did not have any scary visions while he was awake today and tonight was the first night that he wasn't afraid to go to sleep. I only hope that it did not do any permanent damage. I think more research needs to be done on the side effects of this medication and I am going to try to contact the makers of Omnicef. I feel that if my sons mental and mood changes are a side effect then it needs to be researched before it happens to any other child. I will never let any of my children take Omnicef again.

My 3 month old daughter was prescribed Omnicef for bronchiolitis. She did develop a yeast infection on her diaper area on about day 3. She has had mild diarrhea since beginning the medicine, which I expected with an antibiotic. On day 5, today, she had an episode of rust colored diarrhea, I decided to wait and look on the internet before calling the doctor since she is her regular happy self and it does not appear to be bloody. This site has been very helpful.

My one year old daughter was prescribed Omnicef as a "last effort" before sending her to an ENT doc when 4 other antibiotics tried over a 2 1/2 month period refused to drain her right ear. She's only been on it one day, and was up SCREAMING twice last night (about 12 hours after taking the meds), acting like she was having HORRIBLE dreams. Once in the middle of the night it appeared that she temporarily stopped breathing, and when regaining her breath wasn't herself, acting all floppy-like. I was up with her all night. Once up, she appeared fine. But after her nap, she had a MAJOR bowel movement...1/2 of which seemed REALLY purplish/red--almost as if it MIGHT be blood, but not sure. After reading what everyone else has written, think I'll be calling her pediatrician. Her second dose of this antibiotic has her SCREAMING again--almost as if she's having serious intestinal discomfort. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS ANTIBIOTIC!!!!!

Recently, my 12 month old son was prescribed Omnicef for what the Doctor thought was strep throat. Before the medication he had a steady temp of 102 and was very un-energetic. After five does of 1 TSP my son broke out in a horrible rash all over his face, torso/truck, and upper part of his arms and legs. He also got a diaper rash and diarrhea. He also was very bad tempered and moody. This was such a change from his past behavior, even when he was sick. The doctor thinks this is an allergic reaction to the mediation and put him on another antibiotic. I am very concerned about this medication and it's side effects. It seems that eveyone is experiencing some very serious things.

My seven year old son just got out of the hospital after an adverse reaction to omnicef. It started with diarhea that became nonstop until he dehidrated. I stopped the med. on Monday after a stool test was taking that came back neg. for cedif(spelling- bad bacteria overgrowth). By Friday I had him back at Dr. because of nausea and severe stomach cramps. We were told it was probably a virus. By sat. a.m. we were at the ER and they ran the stool test again. This time it came back positive. He was so sick by this time that he spent two nights in the hospital with IV's. The scary thing is the antibiotic caused this and another antibiotic was needed to treat it!

I have been searching the web for side effects to this antibiotic & found this site. My 20 month old daughter has also experienced the big itchy bumps all over her body & brick red stools from this medication. I have been told this is an allergic reaction & to use benedryl until everything clears up. I have also been told the red stools can be GI bleeding & if it is it will be mucasy or have red blood streaks in it & that it is very serious if so. I got my info from nurses & doctors over the telephone. I had planned to take my baby to the ER just to relieve my own worries, but after reading all the other people that had the same reaction I will just watch her closely. I would like to hear from those of you that have dealt with this reaction in your babies & how long it lasts & the ending results from this medication.
Thanks :)

15 years old, was put on omnicef for an ear infection I didnt even know I had. Immediately had thin, reddish diarreah. Now have a rash all over body and genitalia. I would not reccomend this "antibiotic" to anyone, seeing as it apparently causes much more serious "side effects" that are for the most part worse than the original issue. The antibiotic has made me sicker than any ear infection. I have experienced loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, and vaganial/anal itching/ burning/ rashes.

My six year old daughter was prescribed omnicef for a chronic cough and some upper respiratory infections. She took this drug for ten days. She experienced some bloody diahrrea. Even after completing taking this medicine she experience having more bloody stools. The doctor tested her stool (for cultures) it came back negative. Although she tested positive for blood in her stools. They ordered more test and are possibly thinking about surgery if she does not stop bleeding everytime she has a bowl movement. I am convinced that this medicine had something to do with her bleeding. She has always had normal stools until she started taking this medicine. If anyone is experiencing this side effect well after they have stoped taking omnicef, please contact me. My 2 year old was prescribe this medicine also, he got the worse case of diarreah that I have ever seen. His bottom is still not fully recovered from the rash and it has been a month now. He had the perfect bottom. WARNING DO NOT GIVE THIS ANTIBIOTIC TO YOUR CHILD. THERE ARE WORSE SIDE EFFECTS THAT ARE NOT LISTED.

This is a second round of Omincef for my 8 year old with an ear and sinus infection. I don't remember him reacting like this the last time he took Omnicef but he has finished his 10 days and has no appetite. He threw up the day after he stopped taking Omnicef, came home from school lethargic and nauseated and now, 5 days after ending Omnicef he has no appetite and still has greenish mucus from the nose. He has improved a little and I don't know if these are side effectsf from the antibiotic.

This is the 2nd time that my 8 month old has taken omnicef for ear infections. He has had red, bloody looking stools both times. The first time, I rushed him to the doctor and was told he just had a rectal tear. As soon as he finished the antibiotic, the red stools stopped. He is on the medication again and has the nasty diapers again. He is feeling better so I'm not too concerned. I just don't understand why the doctors dismiss the concerns of the parents and act like there is no way the medication would cause this.

My 16 y.o. daughter is taking Omnicef for the first time, 2 capsules each morning. Since starting the antibiotic she has experienced shaking hands, a slightly elevated pulse and BP, weak feeling legs and the feeling that her heart is beating out of her chest. I cannot say for sure this is what is causing it, but she isn't taking any other medications. She is feeling well otherwise. I am an adult woman who took Omnicef for what was thought to be a bacterial infection in my throat. Turned out to just be a cold so I quit taking the Omnicef. A couple weeks later I started getting cramps and side aches. Which is strange because I had a hysterctomy (leaving my ovaries) about four years ago. Turns out I have a vaginal infection which is one of the more common side effects of Omnicef. I don't think that a drug intended to cure one problem should create a totally new problem. What good is this antibiotic? I will never use this drug again.

My 3 year old and my 19 month old are on Omnicef for strep throat. Both have been cranky since starting the antibiotic. My 3 year old son is who is usually very happy and easy going is a monster. Throwing things, slamming doors, disagreeing with everything. My 19 month old daughter has been having a lot of trouble sleeping and has also been very cranky. They took their last dose this morning and right before lunch my 19 month old broke out in a rash, starting on her legs (looks like tiny pimples). When she woke up from her afternoon nap, she seemed to be constipated. She was straining and contoring her body like she had cramps. She was crying and straining so much I though she was going to vomit. We put her in the tub to see if a warm bath would help with the cramps. She rolled around in the tub in pain (crying the whole time). When we took her out, she didn't want to be touch. She didn't want anything to touch her skin (not even a towel). While we were on the phone with the nurse line trying to decide if we should take her to the emergency room, she stopped crying and decided she wanted a fruit cup. This is some bad stuff. Avoid it.

The Dr. prescribed Omnicef, because of some type of infection behind my ear. The first night I took the medicine..I had discomfort in my right side and sharp pain in my shoulder which transgressed to the left side. It scared me...but I didn't think an antibiotic could do this so I took it the next two days (2 a day) and it continued. I stopped taking it and the discomfort stopped, I was encouraged by a friend to start taking it again, convinced my symptoms could not be from a antibiotic, I took it in the AM by PM I had the symptoms back..it was a sharp pain again that went from my shoulder to the left temple of my head. I have called my Dr. and will discontinue this medication.

My 6 year old son had a photosensitive reaction to Omnicef on his 10th and final day. That night it appeared as if he had gotten sunburned but he was also crying that his feet and palms were itchy. The next morning we could see welts on his trunk that moved to his arms and legs. The rash moved around and gradually improved over the next week. But now, three weeks later the welts/hives are back again and seem to be getting worse. They went from his trunk, to his arms and legs, and are now on his face, scalp, and ears, and his feet. Omnicef is not suppose to be photoreactive from what I have read, but this is the only thing that could have caused my son's reaction. My advice - do not take any antibiotic unless the condition is life threatening or will end in a loss of function.

My 5 year old daughter had a Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy recently and was prescribed Omnicef. She has had terrible Diarrhea, constant complaints about her stomach hurting and she has been extremely irritable. She has been off of it for 3 days now and still has these problems. I don't think an antibiotic that causes diarrhea should be given to a t & a patient that is already going to lose weight due to the surgery.

My 14 month old was on Omnicef for ear infection. Terrible antibiotic for a child - he's been extremely gassy, cranky and plain miserable. This was much worse than the ear infection.

My 9 month old son was taking Omnicef for double ear infections. He was precribed 125mg/5ml oral suspension once a day. After we gave him his first dose, he began having almost a maroon colored stool. We thought it was blood. He had been having diarrhea for 2 weeks prior to beginning Omnicef. I contacted the pediatrician and they tested the stool for blood. Thank God it was negative. I called CVS pharmacy, and the only GI side effect listed that had to do with stool was "abnormal stool". My son is going on day 5 of this antibiotic, and his ear infections seem to be clearing, however I do think that this should be listed as a possible side effect. He has had approximately 10 diapers with the same maroon colored stool. It can be very frightening to parents. Thankyou for giving me the opportunity to let others know about this.

i'm a 19 year old college student, and i'm on my last 3 days of this medication, and while i had bad side effects at first, i waited them out, and now they're mostly gone. i had stomach cramps, that gassy feeling, i was dizzy and felt faint...i felt like i was in a cloud and couldn't function. however, it was better than the misery i was experiencing from the sinus infection, where i was only able to sleep. i can return to work, and some side effects still linger , but its def. done its job as an antibiotic. i did develop a yeast infection from the antibiotic i took before omnicef, which is why i didn't want to change medicines again. i was on another antibiotic, which made me deathly sick. omnicef is supposed to have less severe side effects than other bacterial infection antibiotics out there. i did take a probiotic with the omnicef, i recommend taking one with any antibiotic. it levels out your bacteria levels, which may stop stomach problems altogether.
