I starting taking Omnicef Feb. 16, 2006 for Chonic bronchitis. Since the first initial dose, I have experienced brick red bowel movements, loss of appetite, restlessness from having to "flip" every few minutes to try and lessen the pain in my back and abdomen, and blood in my urine. After going to the E.R. I had blood tests, and a CT scan. I was told that no kidney stones were found so the problem had to be with the medication and stop taking it. It is now March 1, 2006 and I STILL have blood in my urine. I am going back to the E.R. today, and will post the results of this visit as soon as I can. But, I cannot believe after so many people have experienced these side effects, Omnicef is still being use. My 8 y.o. was prescribed Omnicef and I would not DARE give this to my child!

I developed extrime diaharea, which continued for 5 days, I was supposed to take this for 7 days, on the 5th day I developed an extemely sore throat which felt like a boil in my
throat, went back to the Dr. and had blood tests done I had
noticed a coffee ground effect coming from the stool, the test
showed that I was bleeding internaly and there was blood in the stool. The doctor had me stop taking it, I have just started to have normal looking stools, but this extreme reaction has
left me very weak, due to the extreme loss of fluid and blood

My 6 year old daughter is having severe joint pain in several spots and redness/swelling around her joints. She is unable to grasp a pencil and is unable to walk due to the pain. This is almost identical to what happened to her almost two years ago, so I took her to the doctor and we just got home. We learned that two years ago my daughter had finished her 10 days of Omnicef just a few days before these symptoms showed up. Coincidentally, my daughter finished Omnicef two days ago for a sinus infection and her current symptoms showed up yesterday. These are the only two times in her life that she has taken Omnicef and unfortunately no one (including myself) ever made the connection that Omnicef might have been the reason for the reaction two years ago. After reading some of the other stories here and many blood tests and doctors visits later with still no answer for the symptoms, I feel very strongly that it is more than a coincidence that Omnicef is the cause of my daughter's pain. Two years ago she had the hives as well and all the symptoms lasted about 10 days. We are only in day 2 now and giving Motrin for the pain, but no hives yet this time. I will not allow Omnicef again for my kids - way too scary to see the amount of pain a drug reaction can cause.
