my 10 month-old was prescribed Omnicef suspension 5ml a day for a lingering cold that turned into a sinus infection, before that she had taken amoxicillin for ear infection.
took it for 10 days, was ok. 2 days after finishing taking the medication, she started her diarrhea/loose stool (no more than 2-3-4 BMs a day, just loose, runny, mucousy, light yellow (like yolk+sour cream mix)-green-ish color.
7 days into the diarrhea some black residue, filament/dill-like came out in the stool for three days. all this time the baby had been eating rice cereal, toast, and formula. What I'm saying is those things came out of her body, wasn't something she had eaten. Yesterday was the 10th day of loose stool, and took her to the ped. was prescribed Lactinex to restore stomach bacteria.
All this time the baby was not herself: waking up and crying at night (cramping, aching?), very clingy and whiny, turning her head at the sight of the solid food (rice regimen), lethargic at times, irritable, mood swings, sticking tongue out (dry mouth?), shuddering, crying when touched, picked up, put down on her feet to stand, her runny nose is back.
Last night she woke up at 2.30A CRYING in terror, lasted for about 2 hours on and off, by 5.30A was up and never gone back to sleep. She usually sleeps 12 hrs solid 7P-7A. She also had a BM- first in 36 hrs-which was the opposite of what she's been having for 10 days- hard, and some loose around, and a patching compound consistency, porous and sandy... She may have woken because of bloating, cramping, difficulty passing the stool. But the crying continued after she relieved herself.
Had I known about the side effects, or this forum before..I would have stopped the medication... Although it may have been difficult since the full-blown symptoms kicked in 2 days after finishing the 10 day Omnicef regimen.
If there is ever an FDA complaint to take this med off the market for good or for further testing, sign me in...

My 24 month old daughter was prescribed Omnicef for adenoiditis by her ENT. She is on day 6 of the drug and is experiencing a terrible pimple-like rash over her entire body, and her infection symptoms don't seem to be improving very quickly. She is also very agitated and fearful of things that she is not normally scared of. She has been extremely moody and clingy since taking this drug (not typical of her personality). She also has the maroon stools. I am calling the ENT tomorrow in hope that he will suggest an alternative to this drug, to which she is OBVIOUSLY having a reaction.

My 13 month old son has been taking Omnicef for 6 days now in 2 2.5 mL doses per day. He has been very whiney and clingy to me and has had the worst diarhea I have ever seen. He has also been running a fever every day upwards of 103. I just changed 4 diapers in less than an hour. I refuse to give him any more of this medication. He does not seem well at all. I'm at a loss. Amoxiclin didn't clear up his ear infection and the doctor gave him this. I will call tomorrow and ask what to do.

my 2.5 year old son began taking Omnicef after 2 rounds of amoxicillan did not work for a sinus infection. His prescription is for 14 days. By day 6 he would not nap but was constantly tired. By day 9 he began to sleep more, sleep later, go to bed earlier and take longer naps. He started to be antisocial and cried constantly. By day 10 he was throwing fits, throwing toys, crying and screaming about everything. He was even beginning to be hurtful by saying "I don't love you anymore." This was all out of the ordinary. Even when he was sick and not feeling well, he did not act this way. Just clingy to his parents. I gave him the last dose last night before bed and today has been the worst day ever. I have never seen him act so out of control and disobedient. At first we thought he was just tired and sleepy. But now that we have read these reports, we truly believe it is the omnicef. We will see our Dr. again tomorrow and tell him about the side affects. We won't be using this drug again.

My 15 month old son was prescribed Omnicef for an ear infection. He's had severe diahrrea... in fact today we've been through 3 outfits, which prompted me to do some research and find this site! He's been a little clingy, but that's normal for him if he's not feeling good.
The diahrrea is what is concerning us. We're calling the doctor first thing Monday morning.

Wow, this is very imformative...I am both shocked and alarmed that they would torture children with this horrible medication. My 12 month old has been on this medication for 1 week, he too has had red stools I figured it was probably a side effect but, I found it very strange that he has been very aggressive, clingy, and throwing temper tantrums, which he never does, he's usually very happy no matter what. I decided to do some research and see if I was the only one who had noticed behavioral changes with this medication. Nonetheless, I just threw the bottle in the garbage where it belongs, this crap should be banned our babies shouldn't have to suffer like this.

My eight month old son was prescribed Omnicef for a double ear infection and possible strep throat. After one dose of the medication, he has had several bouts of rust-colored diarrhea which could be mistaken for blood. Since there is nothing in his diet that could turn his stool this color, I assumed it was the Omnicef. I called the pharmacist to see if there was a red dye in the medication, but he insisted that this was an abnormal occurrence. The pediatrician told us that it does contain a red dye. My son has been irritable, clingy, restless, and is displaying anxious behaviors. He is not sleeping well. I can only attribute it to the medication, as his ears and throat are getting much better. I still have another 6 days left of this; if it continues for another day, I will stop.
To those of you who are continuing to give/take this med, I have split the dose into two and this seems to be helping. I give it in the morning and evening after a full meal. The diarrhea is less frequent and less watery.
This website was the only thing verifying my experience. Thank you to everyone who has contributed their insights.

my 15 mo old started Omnicef 7 days ago. She is generally a very happy smiling child since meds clingy, wakes up crying in middle of night, diarrhea for several days, rash in private area, grabs her throat as if hurts, rubs her head as if headache and today was her check up showed Dr. rash, she said put her on Dr. Smith's. Once home, she began screaming uncontrollably and clinching my neck I could feel her having bowel movement she had her legs straightened in pain. Her stool was bloody. Called nurse, said this can happen BC of tearing in the intestinal track. Told her that was unacceptable and I wanted to speak with the doctor; have not heard from them yet. SHE WILL NOT BE GETTING THE REST OF THIS MEDICINE! Angela Houston TX
