My 24 month old daughter was prescribed Omnicef for adenoiditis by her ENT. She is on day 6 of the drug and is experiencing a terrible pimple-like rash over her entire body, and her infection symptoms don't seem to be improving very quickly. She is also very agitated and fearful of things that she is not normally scared of. She has been extremely moody and clingy since taking this drug (not typical of her personality). She also has the maroon stools. I am calling the ENT tomorrow in hope that he will suggest an alternative to this drug, to which she is OBVIOUSLY having a reaction.

My son is being treated for an ear infection and this is his first time on omnicef. I have noticed day #2 and my 15 month son's stools were maroon colored. My first thought was blood as well, but I was told this is a normal reaction for omnicef to turn bowels orange or maroon colored resembling blood due to reaction with iron in the diet. The pediatric nurse assured me that this is normal and they look for symptoms such as bright red blood in the stool, black stool, and abdominal pain. My son's appetite is good and he is now after day #2 afebrile and doing just fine. However, I will continue to be observant.

What a weird thread! Lot of very excitable parents out there! Most of the "side effects" I read here are symptoms of many different diseases...The clay or maroon colored stool is a well known side effect of Omnicef... every time my doctor has prescribed it she has mentioned it to me. My kids (5, 6, and 9) are currently taking Omnicef for Strep infection with no side effects. (except the strep is clearing up!!) They had stomach pain before the Omnicef because that is a symptom of Strep. Maybe your children are manic, grumpy, and not sleeping because they are ILL. It is common for children to "not be themselves" when sick. The rash or hives occurs in .3% of patients and should definitely be discontinued in such circumstances- just the same as when using any other antibiotics! HELLO.

My 6 month old daughter was on Omnicef, one dose a day for 10 days. The seventh day she had completely maroon colored stool. This can be alarming because you are immediately going to think blood. The doctor said that Omnicef reacts with iron and causes this color. So I think because many 4+ month olds are on iron fortified formulas or cereals this side effect should be told the the parent filling the prescription for their child. We continued the prescription and she had no other ill side effects. She remained her happy go lucky self and it has been a week since the last dose.

My daughter is taking Omnicef for a sinus infection. She has had several soft, maroon stools every day and complains of stomach pain. I was told by pediatrician that the red color is because of the way the drug interacts with the iron in her diet. After research on the web, I discovered that I should watch out for fever, stomach pain and diarreah because these could indicate intestinal infection.

I am a 38 yr old woman who recently had a miscarriage and D&C. Then I was suffering from a sinus infection. My doctor prescribed Omnicef and it's been horrible. I've had abdominal cramping, which I couldn't tell whether it was from the D&C. Then on the 4th day started having diarrhea. On about the 6th day, I started getting maroon colored soft stool which appeared to be bloody upon wiping. I'm on my 11th day of the 15 day regimen, and I'm stopping, because of the bloody appearing stool and abdominal cramps. I called my doctor, and I was advised to come into the office.

My 10 month old was prescribed Omnicef for a severe ear infection that actually burst his eardrum. By day 4 he had the dark maroon in his stools. This is day 7 and he had the worst, most substantial diarrhea diaper I have ever seen in a child. That was this morning. After his bedtime dose and a bottle, he threw up the whole bottle and everything he ate all day, which was not much, thank god. We did not have any trouble like this when he had Amoxicillian for his first ear infection.

My 9 month old son was taking Omnicef for double ear infections. He was precribed 125mg/5ml oral suspension once a day. After we gave him his first dose, he began having almost a maroon colored stool. We thought it was blood. He had been having diarrhea for 2 weeks prior to beginning Omnicef. I contacted the pediatrician and they tested the stool for blood. Thank God it was negative. I called CVS pharmacy, and the only GI side effect listed that had to do with stool was "abnormal stool". My son is going on day 5 of this antibiotic, and his ear infections seem to be clearing, however I do think that this should be listed as a possible side effect. He has had approximately 10 diapers with the same maroon colored stool. It can be very frightening to parents. Thankyou for giving me the opportunity to let others know about this.
