My five year old was in the hospital for 4 days for a sinus infection and they put her on Omnicef. My daughter is a very cheerful little girl and these last couple of days she has been everything but cheerful. Its as she has turned into a demon over night. She has been having the worst mood swings. She has been screaming, yelling back, and kicking her legs and just being really mean. I remember the nurse advising me the possibility of a change in mood swings but I never imagined this. Omnicef did it's purpose BUT I hope to never have to use it again. I was not prepared for the mood swings my child acted out. I thought it was just my child until I started reading online and asking around.

my 15 mo old started Omnicef 7 days ago. She is generally a very happy smiling child since meds clingy, wakes up crying in middle of night, diarrhea for several days, rash in private area, grabs her throat as if hurts, rubs her head as if headache and today was her check up showed Dr. rash, she said put her on Dr. Smith's. Once home, she began screaming uncontrollably and clinching my neck I could feel her having bowel movement she had her legs straightened in pain. Her stool was bloody. Called nurse, said this can happen BC of tearing in the intestinal track. Told her that was unacceptable and I wanted to speak with the doctor; have not heard from them yet. SHE WILL NOT BE GETTING THE REST OF THIS MEDICINE! Angela Houston TX

I am a 57 y/o woman who was given Omnicef for a precaution after having skin cancer removed from my scalp. After 4 doses, I knew something was just not right. My stomach sounded like a bowling alley. Loud, rumbling noises, severe gas, had a horrifying dream about Satan last night that scared me to death, crying spells and now this morning a very loose stool. My dr's nurse told me to stop the med, but my stomach is still rumbling around. It's frightening to think that this drug is still being prescribed so freely.

My 3 year old was prescribed Omnicef for an ear infection. After the 1st dose he began waking at night with "Night Terrors". I called the doctor's office and they said that this was not a side effect and is common for this age. We continued to give him the medicine and his "Night Terrors" continued every night and every time he woke up from a nap. After the third day of Omnicef he started to become nervous and scared and not as nice as he usually was. He was afraid of the dark and did not want to go to bed. On the fifth day of medication he had 3 episodes of which he was so scared that he was screaming, and shaking and said he was "having a bad dream" but he was awake. I asked him what was in his dream and he pointed to the window and said "there is a monster out there". It was horrible! I called the doctor after the first episode and the nurse said that this was not one of the side effects and to continue the medicine. However, my husband and I decided not to give him any more Omnicef. We told the nurse that we didn't care if it wasn't a side effect and that it was too coincidental that this started exactly when he started taking Omnicef. The doctor would not call in a different antibiotic but said 5 days of Omnicef should be enough for his ear infection and he will see our son in three days for a recheck. Today was the second day without Omnicef and our son seems to be getting back to his normal, happy self. He did not have any scary visions while he was awake today and tonight was the first night that he wasn't afraid to go to sleep. I only hope that it did not do any permanent damage. I think more research needs to be done on the side effects of this medication and I am going to try to contact the makers of Omnicef. I feel that if my sons mental and mood changes are a side effect then it needs to be researched before it happens to any other child. I will never let any of my children take Omnicef again.

My 11 month old daughter just started Omnicef for an ear infection, she has an allergy to pennicillins so this was an alternate. She has had 2 doses and already I am not liking this drug. She has had a dark marroon colored stool and when I contacted my doctor's office the nurse said she did not think this to be a common side effect. We are waiting for her to speak to the doctor and return a call to us in the morning. They said to stop the drug until further notice. After reading all the enteries on this wedsite, I am thinking when they call in the morning I am going to request that my daughter be put back on the medication we were given last time to treat an ear infection. Thank you for all your enteries, it's nice to have this. The doctors and disclaimers about side effects don't seem to have as much insight as us as parents have.

My son is 23 months old and took Omnicef for 3 doses. He had severe red colored diariah, became quite irritable, had a fever of 104 about an hour after every dose, and had little welts all over his body along with a rash. I called he doctor, and both he and the nurse said they had never heard of any of these types of reactions, except for the diariah...obviously haven't listened to any one who has ever taken this terrible medicine!

My seven month old son was prescribed Omnicef for an ear infection four days ago and it was the worst experience we have had yet...worse than colick and worse than reflux. My son who is normally extremely happy and easy going became a monster. He wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink and wouldn't sleep. He would throw a tantrum and swat his bottle out of my hand he wouldn't let me rock him or put him in the bed. He acted like he had gone mad and was very aggressive. It was a horrible experience. I called the doctor back after only one day of being on the medicine and they told me that these weren't side effects of the Omnicef and it was probably just his ears hurting to give it a couple more days. This behavior continued until today when I refused to give him another dose and told the nurse so...she asked if he was on any other cold medicine etc...and he wasn't so they prescribed him augmentin which is what we normally take and have never had a problem. I will never give this medicine to my child again and am not sure I will ever take it myself for sinusitis again either. He also experienced red looking stools but I can't swear that it was bloody but it was definitely a rusty red.

My 7 month old son has been on Omnicef for 1 week. He has had almost black stools and today he was very irritable. On the second day of taking the medicine he didn't want to eat anything. All day he has acted like he has had cramps and has been very gassy. Tonight he woke up with a fever of 102.7 and he just won't sleep. I called the doctors office and the nurse told me that he did't need to be seen until his fever was 103.5. I do not think that I like this medicine. This is his 3rd ear infection in 5 weeks. We need something to clear this ear infection up but I hate the way it makes him feel.
