It is now 2am and my 22 mo old has been on omnicef for pneumonia for 2.5 days...starting the night he took it he started waking up in the middle of the night just screaming - he does not get night terrors, this all started happening the exact night he started the medicine...he did it the next day when waking up from a nap as well and then again tonight. My husband is with him and I am searching the internet on this stuff - I have no doubt it's the medicine after reading these similar stories - and will be calling his DR in the morning. He has also had 8 runny diapers in the last 15 hours since starting it.

I was treated with Omnicef for a suspected case of pneumonia (they didn't even do a chest x-ray to confirm this). About 4 days into my treatment I developed very bad diarrhea with mucus and blood. A few days later I began having fever, body aches, and throwing up. I went into the ER for dehydration, at which point they told me that Omnicef can cuase these symptoms. 11 days later, I still have no appetite and continue with the diarrhea. No one told me about these possible side effects. Do not take this antibiotic!!! I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

My 2.5 year old son was put on Omnicef for sinus infection/tonsilitis. He is now done with it and we made it through but his behavior for those 10 days changed SO dramatically, I decided to retroactively look up side effects. What I am seeing here is a lot of parents describing the same thing (besides the ever present diarrhea) - the nightmares, waking screaming, but beyond just cranky as with other illness- and he's had pneumonia already- lashing out, really angry. My mother in law suggested maybe the medication had something to do with it and I thought she was reaching too far,but now, I'm not sure. If I were to be perscribed it again, I would request an alternative.

I was so worried , since my MD had not mentioned this as a side effect, so I researceh on the internet and saw this. Thanks a bunch to the parents who posted here and made me feel so better!

My 23 month old son has taken a 5 day dose of Omnicef for a sinus infection and he has had terrible diarrehea and a terrible red pimple like rash on his bottom and upper back. This is the 3rd time that he has been on this medication and it will be the last time. It has been the same result each time he has taken it. The first time was for pneumonia, the second time for ear infections, and this time for sinus infection. He is worse now than before he took this medication and he still has the sinus infection. I advise parents against this medication.

My son is 13 months old and this is the 3rd time that he has been on omnicef. The firt time it was for pneumonia, and these last 2 times, it was for an ear infection. The first 2 times he took this medicine, it gave him a diaper rash like poison ivy. Thats all. But this time, He has Bloody looking stools. he is a little irritable, but he was before he got on his meds because of the infection. His stool really concerned me, so when I read your comments, I am reassured, but I am still waiting on the dr. to call me back just to be sure. Thank you.

My 4 yr old son was given Omnicef for pneumonia. After a few days, i saw what i thought was blood in the stool....his stools have all been soft, but not diarrhea and also full of mucous. my son dances around crying to have a bowel movement and it breaks my heart. i called his ped who told me too that it was the dye in the med, but hello, the med is white. I have definately seen blood in his stool...bright red. i looked at the website for Omnicef and it says if you see blood in the stool or mucous to stop using it. He's almost done with it so i am going to stop it. My daughter is 2 and is on it as well and so far, no blood in her stool. this stuff is scary. Does anyone know if the blood goes away after you stop this or do you need to seek medical attention?

I don't think my last post went through...my 22 mo old was given omnicef for pneumonia 2 days ago - the very first night he woke up screaming like crazy, lasted off an on for an hour or so, maybe more. He is NOT a sleep terror toddler and never has had sleep problems. The next day he did the same thing when waking up from his nap, the screaming and crankiness lasted about 30-45 min. It is now 2am and he's been doing it off and on for an hour again. My husband is with him and I am reading every one else's posts with the same effects on their kids. I just went over the omnicef website with a fine tooth comb - NOTHING on this side effect - it's rediculous. This is found on the internet by too many people making these middle of the night posts - i'd probably recomend they put a little more money into research and figure out what in the world is going on and why so many people are having the same experience. I'll be calling my doctor in the morning! He has also been really crabby since starting it - he'll just scream and 'freak out' at the drop of a hat - kind of like terrible 2's X 10 - and he was not previously like that either.
