My then 8-month old daughter was prescribed for Omnicef for double ear infection two weeks ago on a Friday. She started having watery diarrhea and stomach cramping a few hours after taking it. She vomited once, and her mood changed to be irritable and extremely demanding. No more smile at all. We asked the doctor to change the prescription the next day (Sat), but he suggested to divide the dose into half, and gave it her twice a day. Okay, we tried it, and the next morning (the third day), she woke up having bad rash on her face, and rash started showing up in other parts of her body gradually by the end of that day. Of course, I called again INSISTING ON a change of the prescription.
The diarrhea kept going on for about a week, and two days after stopping Omnicef, my lovely daughter started smiling at me again.
Omnicef may be more effective treatment the ear infection as othe rmedicine, but I don't think it's worthwhile giving it to kids. The side effects were so strong.

My son is 15 months. He has been on Omnicef 2 times prior to this with only great results. Where other drugs had failed to cure his infections, omnicef wiped it out. Yet this time I have a different story. I am an RN and have enough education to know that the problem may not be omnicef at all but yeasterday I swore I knew it was. Four days ago my son begain running a temp (102/103). I don't like to rush to antibiotics everytime he gets sick so I decided to wait a while to see what happens (because this was really the only symptom he had). After about a day and a half I noticed a little sinus drainage. My sister in law who is a Family Nurse Practitioner took a look at him and said he has a bit of an ear infection and inflammed throat so she decided to put him on omnicef. The next day his fever broke and seemed to be feeling better. Of course I noticed the usual reddish colored stools but this is normal (as well as some abdominal discomfort and runny stools). Anyways after about 3 doses of omnicef he began to develop a rash on his trunk. This same rash had appeared the last time he had augmentin and thus his Drs weren't sure if he was allergic or not. The rash isn't hives or the type of rash associated with allergies so it was a bit confusing. But, after his 4th dose the rash got 10 times worse. Naturally I started to freak out but this morning I took him to his pediatrician and he thinks its roseola. After reading more about Roseola I am fairly certain this is it but I'm still quite confused about the coincidence with this rash appearing after augmentin and now omnicef. I know that there is cross-sensitivity between penecillins (augmentin) and cephlasporins (omnicef) and so I was really convinced he was having some sort of mild allergic reaction to both. After educating myself more on the signs and symptoms of roseola, I am 99% sure that it is the real culpret. I do wonder however if antibiotics such as the ones I mentioned can aggrivate it??? Anyone else out there have any similar experiences??? By the way, because I am a mother and a nurse, I find it hard to discredit other parents beliefs when it comes to things like this, but you must always stop and ask yourselves if some of these strange "behaviors" aren't due to the fact that your kids are already ill? My son kept me up all night long too and I admit it is tempting to blame the drug but who really knows. My advice is to take the severity of the situation into strong consideration. Like I said, I have had wonderful results with omnicef in the past. but just because a drug works, doesn't mean it doesn't have consequences. Its when the risks outwiegh the benefits that another option should be sought after.

My daughter just finished a course of Omnicef for ear infection. Throughout treatment she complained of occassional hiccups. One day after we finished the Omnicef, she broke out in a whelt-like rash on her chest, back and legs.
She has never had this reaction before. This was our first
time -- and last -- taking this new antibiotic.

My 26 yr old daughter took Omnicef following sinus surgery 2 wks ago. She developed a rash on her face, vomiting, & reddish diahrrea, followed by vaginal & rectal itching & pain. Returned to her GP 1 wk after surgery & was told she doesn't have any urinary or yeast infection. However, she was treated as if she had a yeast infection. The side effects are making her incredibly irritable due to discomfort. Don't know what to do next, but we know she will never take this med again. It seems quite dangerous.
The Dr was quite indifferent regarding her situation.

My 23 month old son has taken a 5 day dose of Omnicef for a sinus infection and he has had terrible diarrehea and a terrible red pimple like rash on his bottom and upper back. This is the 3rd time that he has been on this medication and it will be the last time. It has been the same result each time he has taken it. The first time was for pneumonia, the second time for ear infections, and this time for sinus infection. He is worse now than before he took this medication and he still has the sinus infection. I advise parents against this medication.

My one year old son was prescribed omnicef for broncital cough that he had developed. Prior to 8 days agao he had been on this medication before but never indure any side effects. Anyway, today is his eighth day of being on the medication and as of three days ago he started having loose stools, black coloring with what looked like black pieces of miniature corn. For three days he has had diareaha, and it seems like every 5 minuets he has another loose stool. I called the doctor and asked what should I do and they said to me because he was not running a fever that it was most llikely something that he ate. But you know what his diet had not changed at all. So I stopped giving him his medication today because after the second day he also developed a severe diaper rash, I usually wipe him with baby wipes but I can not anymore do to the rash on his bottom. Poor baby, his balls were swallon and his butt red! Well if anyone has any advice for me please email me so I can make my baby feel better.

I have been having moderate dizziness. I started taking Ominicef six days ago. I am experiencing what appears to be diarrea. There was also an unexplained rash on my neck. The rash disappeared when I applied an appropriate cream to the area, but the other problems still exist.

My 12 month old son developed diarrhea after three 125mg doses of Omnicef. He also has insomnia and is wiped out from not getting enough sleep and the diarrhea combined. He developed a rash on the neck, hairline, around the ears, and some on the trunk shortly after the diarrhea began. He had way more energy despite the diagnosed sinus infection and 102-103 degree fever before taking Omnicef. He also slept through the entire night peacefully despite the fever before taking the medication. This was much nicer for everybody as were the normal diapers before Omnicef. He is now more sick from the medicine. What a contradiction, and what a game of roulet we have to play. Without the antibiotics, I suppose an ear infection might have developed, but maybe I'll just wait on the antibiotics next time when the only symptom he has is a fever.

My 4 year old daughter was on omnicef for two days for an ear infection. She is now covered from head to toe in a nasty red rash. The rash on her cheeks looks as though the bumps have all meshed into one huge red bump. Her entire cheeks are bright red. The dr said it was an allergic reaction to the meds and changed her to Septra. I don't want to start her new meds until the rash is gone but it isn't showing signs of improvement as of day 3. I am wondering if anyone could tell me how long the rash lasts? Should I start her new meds for the ear infection anyway? And she is sooooo moody. Her meltdowns are on a nuclear level which is out of character.
