I was given omnicef for a sinus infection, though I was told to take it twice a day , ive only been taking it once a day , due to an unnormal schedule... It has caused me to be so uncomfortable..I cant stand it. I have unbelievable abdominal pain, cramps ... but no diarrhea... Im constipated , one bowel movement a day ... and I also have the rust/ red stools. which is a listed side effect . Ironically, Before being diagnosed with all of this, I was in the doctors office a few weeks earlier complaining of stomach problems. . thinking I may have an ulcer, and my doctor told me It was only stress... yet he never tested me for an ulcer, no x-ray , nor an endoscopy. Now Im on some medicine that apparently may mess me up even more. WOW.

My 1 year old was prescribed Omnicef for a possible sinus infection. Before she started taking this med she had a little cough and a runny nose, not that bad at all. The doctor thought she should go on this for 14 days to help. She has been on the med for 4 days, and her symptoms have gotten worse. She is coughing all the time, she is having massive maroon colored runny stools, and she has a horrible diaper rash. She has started to get a welt on her thigh, and rash around her cheeks and chin. I am currently waiting for the doctor to call us back regarding the problems she is having. I am so glad I found this website, and know that I am not being paranoid. My daughter is the most even keeled baby you will ever meet, but the last couple of days she has been crying all the time as if she is in pain. I have stopped the medication and will never allow her to take this medicine again!!!!

My 4 year old son was prescribed Omnicef 10 days ago for a sinus infection and has had no side effects. It also worked very effectively. I just wanted to let people know that because I read this board after it was prescribed and it really scared me. Not to minimize other peoples' negative experience, but I thought I should post my experience.

My doctor gave me omnicef for a sinus infection and I must say that I felt much better before the I started the medicine. From the first day I had most of all the side effects, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, no appetite, but no muscle/joint pain. However, since I finished the last pill, I have been experiencing extreme right leg pain in the hamstring area and below. Actually, my whole leg hurts like heck! I have been doing leg exercises and taking ibuprofen, but how long must I do this. It has been going on for 2 1/2 weeks now. I too will never take this medicine again. I am not even sure that it even helped my sinus situation, but if it did, it also caused way more problems than I had or ever expected.

My five year old was in the hospital for 4 days for a sinus infection and they put her on Omnicef. My daughter is a very cheerful little girl and these last couple of days she has been everything but cheerful. Its as she has turned into a demon over night. She has been having the worst mood swings. She has been screaming, yelling back, and kicking her legs and just being really mean. I remember the nurse advising me the possibility of a change in mood swings but I never imagined this. Omnicef did it's purpose BUT I hope to never have to use it again. I was not prepared for the mood swings my child acted out. I thought it was just my child until I started reading online and asking around.

Has anyone had any chest pain from taking Omnicef? I've had a dull very mild pain in my chest by my heart that comes and goes. I have no trouble breathing. I was on the drug for over a week and didn't really notice the chest pain because of all the coughing I was doing from my sinus infection. It wasn't till three days after I finished taking the drugs that the pain became more frequent. Has any one felt this?

I'd like to start off by saying though many people have had some very bad reactions to this medication, that it is not a reason for it to be taken off the market. everyones body's have different reactions to different medications and while for some it may be a very negative reaction, for others it may be a very good or significant one. I'm 17 years old and currently taking Omnicef for a sinus infection. I am having side effects but the fact is a few days ago I was miserably sick, and now I am feeling significantly better. so though I am having side effects, the benefit of this medication, or at least for me, is that my sinus infection is most definitely getting better. my side effects have been gas and nausea (which I usually have regardless from GERD), bad dreams and restless sleep, and this is quite odd but fowl smelling urine and body odor. I haven't read about anyone else noticing body odor after taking it though so if someone has noticed this can you please let me know? thank you.

My 16 yr old son was prescribed this drug 9 days ago for a severe sinus infection. He came home from school yesterday with several small raised welts on the creases of his arms. I took him immediately back to his Dr who said he was having an allergic reaction, prescribed steroids and said it would get worse before it got better. Within a few hours his elbows had visible knots in different places, then his knees did the same thing, then his feet started getting knots on the bottom and he had different whelps breaking out on his torso and lower stomach. We immediately took him to the ER last night when he said his tongue "felt funny". The attending immediately diagnosed an acute severe allergic reaction and gave him a huge steroid and Benadryl dose. He released him because the itching had stopped and his tongue no longer felt funny. Last night he kept drenching himself with sweat during sleep. Today so far some of the whelps are gone but he has some pretty severe joint involvement with visible knots around the elbow and knees and feet.

My daughter is 9 years old and was prescribed Omnicef for a sinus infection. 48 hours after first taking her dosage, she was in a deep depression. It was as if her "light" went out. She cried, worried and obsessed about things that she didn't even understand. Many times she said that she had no idea why she was sad and crying. I took her to the school psychologist who couldn't put her finger on any certain concern either. This went on for 2 weeks. Exactly 48 hours after stopping the drug, the light came back on. She has been fine ever since. Has anyone else ever had this happen to them?

Omnicef has done a great job on a persistent throat and sinus infection. However, I have trouble sleeping due to the vivid nightmares it has given. I quit taking it for two days and the nightmares stopped. Back on it and they came back.

my 10 month-old was prescribed Omnicef suspension 5ml a day for a lingering cold that turned into a sinus infection, before that she had taken amoxicillin for ear infection.
took it for 10 days, was ok. 2 days after finishing taking the medication, she started her diarrhea/loose stool (no more than 2-3-4 BMs a day, just loose, runny, mucousy, light yellow (like yolk+sour cream mix)-green-ish color.
7 days into the diarrhea some black residue, filament/dill-like came out in the stool for three days. all this time the baby had been eating rice cereal, toast, and formula. What I'm saying is those things came out of her body, wasn't something she had eaten. Yesterday was the 10th day of loose stool, and took her to the ped. was prescribed Lactinex to restore stomach bacteria.
All this time the baby was not herself: waking up and crying at night (cramping, aching?), very clingy and whiny, turning her head at the sight of the solid food (rice regimen), lethargic at times, irritable, mood swings, sticking tongue out (dry mouth?), shuddering, crying when touched, picked up, put down on her feet to stand, her runny nose is back.
Last night she woke up at 2.30A CRYING in terror, lasted for about 2 hours on and off, by 5.30A was up and never gone back to sleep. She usually sleeps 12 hrs solid 7P-7A. She also had a BM- first in 36 hrs-which was the opposite of what she's been having for 10 days- hard, and some loose around, and a patching compound consistency, porous and sandy... She may have woken because of bloating, cramping, difficulty passing the stool. But the crying continued after she relieved herself.
Had I known about the side effects, or this forum before..I would have stopped the medication... Although it may have been difficult since the full-blown symptoms kicked in 2 days after finishing the 10 day Omnicef regimen.
If there is ever an FDA complaint to take this med off the market for good or for further testing, sign me in...

I am 52 years old. Omnicef was prescribed to me for an ear and sinus infection. I took the medication for five of the ten days prescribed. Praise God, I did not take the remaining five days. Otherwise, I believe I would be in the hospital! I missed three days of work due to non-stop diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps and rumbling, muscle and joint pain. I cannot begin to describe the pain this medication causes. It was been 17 days since my first dose of this horrific drug and I am still having stomach issues. PLEASE THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU TAKE THIS DRUG! I WILL NEVER TAKE IT AGAIN.

I took my first (and only) dose of Omnicef 4 days ago for a sinus infection and have not stopped having tummy problems. The smell or even thought of food makes me want to vomit, I have constant non-stop diarrhea. I feel woozy and sweaty and like I am going to faint. I'm very thirsty and tired. My stomach is contantly rubmling and cramping and feels gassy but is much much worse. This prescription cost so much and only caused me more pain and trouble. Pepto-Bismol has not helped. PLEASE REFUSE TO TAKE OMNICEF IF YOUR DR. PRESCRIBES. I'd take a sinus infection over this any day. It terrifies me to think this is being prescribed for children...I am 34 and can not image what it must be like for a little one to have to go through this. I am going to find out what I can do NATURALLY to fix my stomach problems and take care of my sinus infection. Monday I'll look for a NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIAN to consult with in the future! P.S. The person who recommended taking a PROBIOTIC was right. I am going to begin taking ACIDOPHILUS.

My daughter is 14 years old. She was prescribed Omnicef 300mg 2 capsules 1 time a day for a sinus infection. She had only taken 2 doses. Her side effects were: Nausea, vomiting, fever (102.3), body aches, headache, swallon tongue, her skin was a little yellow, she said her skin felt raw, and she felt like the ruth of her mouth was covered with something. I stopped the medication immediately and called the doctor. They advised me they would pull her chart and have a nurse call me that afternoon. I thought about it for about an hour and called back. I told them that the information sheet states that if you experience any of the side effects to call your Dr. immediately, I told them that immediately meet immediately not later in the afternoon. They then got the Dr. The Dr. advised to stop the meds. (which I already did), and they called her in another perscription. They said it would take 24 to 48 hrs to get out of her system. They also said to use benydryl and that would help to get it out of her system faster and help with some of the side effects. I will keep this medicine in mind to make sure that no one else in my family is ever prescribed this again. She has been one sick little girl. I would not recommed this medicine to anyone.

I was prescribed Omnicef for my bad sinus infection. On the 3rd day I stopped this medication due to terrible black diarrhea. It continued for 4 days, though by the 4th day it was better. Due to the constant diarrhea, I had a slight problem with hemorroids, which is now gone. The thing is I haven't been feeling like myself since taking this medication. I felt a little paranoid and anxiety that I had to call my doctor and inform her that I stopped this medication. I'll be seeing her tomorrow.

I am a 38-yr old woman and I was prescribed Omnicef in February for a sinus infection. On day 2 I started having diarrhea. On day 5 I went back to my doctor and she took me off the Omnicef. Here it is nearly two months later and I'm still having problems with my bowels. I went to a gastroentologist last week and just had my 3rd stool sample. I was tested for C-Diff which is caused from taking antibiotics. I am scheduled for a colonoscopy unless my stool sample comes back positive. After reading everyone else's side effects I think this is what I have. I highly recommend NOT taking Omnicef. This drug should be taken off the market!

My 2.5 year old was prescribed Omnicef for possible sinus infection/pink eye the day before yesterday. She had a dose that night and two doses yesterday. After that third dose, I noticed diarrhea like water and went to the Internet to learn a little more about this medication. I found this website and was prepared for what this evening had in store. We woke up at 3 a.m. with her crying inconsolably and very uncomfortable. I held her a little bit and she wanted to be back in her bed, I'm sleeping next to her on the floor when she'll let me sleep. It's MISERABLE... a MEDICINE is CAUSING this!! She's writhing in pain from the cramping of the diarrhea. The benefits don't out-weigh the risks of this medication! I will NEVER give my child another medication without researching it first. Of course, every medication has side effects that you may never experience and you don't know until you try, but it sounds as though this med is MOST LIKELY to cause diarrhea, not worth it!!

My 3 year old took 3rd dose tonight before bed. Prescribed for sinus infection. Woke up repeatedly, crying and calling our names and having conversations in his sleep both nights on this med. Very strange behaviours. Seems to be affecting his nervous system and brain in ways I am not comfortable with. Will discontinue immediately. Would encourage others to discontinue use quickly when experiencing adverse symptoms.

My 24 month old daughter was prescribed Omnicef for a sinus infection. She began waking up multiple times in the night screaming. She acts like she is in pain, but won't tell you what hurts. She freaks out when you touch her when she wakes up like that. She also appears to be hallucinating and we're not really sure she is even waking up. She has had 4 doses and now the mood changes have gone into the day hours. We have contacted the doctor and they agree with us that she should stop taking the medication. We cannot confirm the bowel movement side effects because she has not had one in 2 days. We checked the side effects insert from Omnicef last night when things were bad and nothing was on it about nightmares. I understand that not all children react the same to medications, but there are too many with the same reactions to overlook this.

My 6 year old daughter is having severe joint pain in several spots and redness/swelling around her joints. She is unable to grasp a pencil and is unable to walk due to the pain. This is almost identical to what happened to her almost two years ago, so I took her to the doctor and we just got home. We learned that two years ago my daughter had finished her 10 days of Omnicef just a few days before these symptoms showed up. Coincidentally, my daughter finished Omnicef two days ago for a sinus infection and her current symptoms showed up yesterday. These are the only two times in her life that she has taken Omnicef and unfortunately no one (including myself) ever made the connection that Omnicef might have been the reason for the reaction two years ago. After reading some of the other stories here and many blood tests and doctors visits later with still no answer for the symptoms, I feel very strongly that it is more than a coincidence that Omnicef is the cause of my daughter's pain. Two years ago she had the hives as well and all the symptoms lasted about 10 days. We are only in day 2 now and giving Motrin for the pain, but no hives yet this time. I will not allow Omnicef again for my kids - way too scary to see the amount of pain a drug reaction can cause.

57-year-old female. I took Omnicef Feb 2 thru 11 for sinus infection. Diminished appetite and leg pain at night. I got back my appetite immediately upon finishing the 10-days, but the leg pain is getting worse. It only happens only at night right now, mostly in my hip, knee, & ankle, causing pain to radiate from hip to foot. Now I'm sitting up in the middle of the night & the pain has subsided, but now my leg is tingling. Also some mild numbness in thigh.

It has been 3 weeks and the side effects have not gone away. I did not know there were such horrible side effects. My doctor has done blood work and urine tests. I do not have the results yet. My son is 11 months old and was prescribed Omnicef for an ear infection / sinus infection last week, and after a few days his stools became brick red in color. He is on an iron-fortified formula. Over the past 6 months, my son has struggled with recurrent ear infections / sinus infections, and from what I remember this is the second time he has been prescribed Omnicef. The first time he took Omnicef I was still nursing him at least half of his feedings per day and supplementing with same iron-fortified fomula he is on now, and I don't recall any brick-red stools.

I took it for a few more days, then stopped because of my leg pain. They checked me for blod clots & it was negative. 3 days after stopping this drug, I still have the leg pain & I'm convinced it is from omnicef. my 2.5 year old son began taking Omnicef after 2 rounds of amoxicillan did not work for a sinus infection. His prescription is for 14 days. By day 6 he would not nap but was constantly tired. By day 9 he began to sleep more, sleep later, go to bed earlier and take longer naps. He started to be antisocial and cried constantly. By day 10 he was throwing fits, throwing toys, crying and screaming about everything. He was even beginning to be hurtful by saying "I don't love you anymore." This was all out of the ordinary. Even when he was sick and not feeling well, he did not act this way. Just clingy to his parents. I gave him the last dose last night before bed and today has been the worst day ever. I have never seen him act so out of control and disobedient. At first we thought he was just tired and sleepy. But now that we have read these reports, we truly believe it is the omnicef. We will see our Dr. again tomorrow and tell him about the side affects. We won't be using this drug again.

Have completed three days of antibiotic treatments at 600 mg per dose. I have severe diarrhea and am in fear of becoming dehydrated. My pharmacist tells me it couldn't possibly be the OMNICEF, just the sinus infection leaving my system. I have had sinus infections before and nothing has left my system like this in my life. It was recommended that I try probiotics to counter the side effect of the diarrhea. This goes on my list of antibiotics to stay away from in the future.

Rash -
I have had a sinus infection since last November 2005. I had been prescribed Zithromax, Biaxin twice, Avelox, and then Omnicef in a 7-month period.
The Omnicef, a 21-day dose, was prescribed in July 2006. Two days after I finished taking the Omnicef I began to get a rash. At first I thought it was bug bites because they were on my legs, arms and back.
A week into it I realized these red bumps, that look like bug bites, were in fact more than a bug bite. I treated the bumps with Benadryl and Cortisone cream, the first week I had them, and instead of getting better the bumps were getting worse.
I happen to go to my doctor about day seven of the rash for a scheduled check-up. I asked my doctor about the rash. She seemed concerned and prescribed a Methylpred Pak. The rash began to subside about four days into the Methylpred. By the end of the Methylpred the rash was about 95% gone.
About three days after I completed The Methlpred the rash began to come back with a vengeance. I was actually worse that it was initially and was now spreading to my face. My doctor suggested I go to a dermatologist, which I did.
The dermatologist said that I was having an allergic reaction to the Omnicef and that it was not that uncommon. He prescribed Prednisone. I took the Prednisone for 10 days and again the rash began to get better, but two weeks after I began the Prednisone the rash still was not gone.
The dermatologist again gave me More Prednisone to take, but not as much as the first dose, to get rid of the rash. The rash almost went away with the exception of a couple of bumps. This was as of 9/15/06.
Today is 9/30/06 and as I write this, my back is once again covered in the rash. I am now starting to get it on my lags and arms again as well. Bah! I started taking a Methylpred Pak again this morning. This will make the third time since mid-April.
I remain hopeful that this terrible rash will clear up, as it is uncomfortable and cause for great distress.

Within 5 dosages, I not only went into a whole body infection, but developed Vasculitus (huge purple, sores and eruptions) all over my legs, elbows, scalp, etc. I developed arthitis so severly that I was forced to walk with a cane for weeks. Lastly, I now have diabetes. In short, I almost, died.
Be careful of this drug!!!

I mentioned to my husbsand that this may be a side effect and he thought we should stop the drug. My 2.5 year old son was put on Omnicef for sinus infection/tonsilitis. He is now done with it and we made it through but his behavior for those 10 days changed SO dramatically, I decided to retroactively look up side effects. What I am seeing here is a lot of parents describing the same thing (besides the ever present diarrhea) - the nightmares, waking screaming, but beyond just cranky as with other illness- and he's had pneumonia already- lashing out, really angry. My mother in law suggested maybe the medication had something to do with it and I thought she was reaching too far,but now, I'm not sure. If I were to be perscribed it again, I would request an alternative.

I took my 18 month old son to the Ped two days ago because he had been running a high fever after a cold so I assumed it was an ear infection. It turned out to be a sinus infection so she prescribed Omnicef. I gave it to him right away and almost immediately started noticing a rash after I had given it to him. I thought maybe it was roseola so I continued giving to him. Last night his fever shot back up to 103. I am not totally sure its the medicine because he has never taken an antibiotic before. I really think it is though.

It did clear my infection but the side effects are the WORST!! BEWARE!! take at your own risk. Consult physician about side effects..

This is the 3rd time that he has been on this medication and it will be the last time. It has been the same result each time he has taken it. This is a second round of Omincef for my 8 year old with an ear and sinus infection. I don't remember him reacting like this the last time he took Omnicef but he has finished his 10 days and has no appetite. He threw up the day after he stopped taking Omnicef, came home from school lethargic and nauseated and now, 5 days after ending Omnicef he has no appetite and still has greenish mucus from the nose. He has improved a little and I don't know if these are side effectsf from the antibiotic.

I can't say this is a direct effect from Omnicef, but until I see my eye doctor tomorrow it's the only thing I can come up with. Took 3 days worth of Omnicef for a sinus infection. Woke up on the fourth day and my ability to read any kind of writing has diminished - everything's blurry. It's almost as if my eye prescription changed over night. Has anyone experienced this side effect?

My daughter is taking Omnicef for a sinus infection. She has had several soft, maroon stools every day and complains of stomach pain. I was told by pediatrician that the red color is because of the way the drug interacts with the iron in her diet. After research on the web, I discovered that I should watch out for fever, stomach pain and diarreah because these could indicate intestinal infection.

My 12 month old son developed diarrhea after three 125mg doses of Omnicef. He also has insomnia and is wiped out from not getting enough sleep and the diarrhea combined. He developed a rash on the neck, hairline, around the ears, and some on the trunk shortly after the diarrhea began. He had way more energy despite the diagnosed sinus infection and 102-103 degree fever before taking Omnicef. He also slept through the entire night peacefully despite the fever before taking the medication. This was much nicer for everybody as were the normal diapers before Omnicef. He is now more sick from the medicine. What a contradiction, and what a game of roulet we have to play. Without the antibiotics, I suppose an ear infection might have developed, but maybe I'll just wait on the antibiotics next time when the only symptom he has is a fever.

I am a 38 yr old woman who recently had a miscarriage and D&C. Then I was suffering from a sinus infection. My doctor prescribed Omnicef and it's been horrible. I've had abdominal cramping, which I couldn't tell whether it was from the D&C. Then on the 4th day started having diarrhea. On about the 6th day, I started getting maroon colored soft stool which appeared to be bloody upon wiping. I'm on my 11th day of the 15 day regimen, and I'm stopping, because of the bloody appearing stool and abdominal cramps. I called my doctor, and I was advised to come into the office.

I took omnicef capsules for a sinus infection and it did not agree with my bowels. They turned dark brown, soft, mucusy and developed into diarrhea, too. In addition, after a full course, my sinus infection hasn't cleared.

i'm a 19 year old college student, and i'm on my last 3 days of this medication, and while i had bad side effects at first, i waited them out, and now they're mostly gone. i had stomach cramps, that gassy feeling, i was dizzy and felt faint...i felt like i was in a cloud and couldn't function. however, it was better than the misery i was experiencing from the sinus infection, where i was only able to sleep. i can return to work, and some side effects still linger , but its def. done its job as an antibiotic. i did develop a yeast infection from the antibiotic i took before omnicef, which is why i didn't want to change medicines again. i was on another antibiotic, which made me deathly sick. omnicef is supposed to have less severe side effects than other bacterial infection antibiotics out there. i did take a probiotic with the omnicef, i recommend taking one with any antibiotic. it levels out your bacteria levels, which may stop stomach problems altogether.
