short and unsweet, was put on it for osteoarthritis by a bone doctor ,took it for 1 week and had to get off it because the side effects were horrible. panic attacks, severe mood swings, dizziness, disorientation and more. The worst was yet to come 2 days after I told my doctor I couldn"t take it anymore. I was getting ready for work and thought I was having a heart attack. I drove myself to my doctor (praying the whole way, cuz God is in charge). He took my blood pressure which was 200/187. I was rushed to the hospital where I was admitted and put in the cardiac unit overnight for observation. Thank God I was released the next day with no APPARENT side effects. I have not been right since. I still have panic attacks, severe mood swings and fluctuating blood pressure. Do yourself a favor and when anyone mentions Prednisone RUN! Oh, I forgot to mention my doctor said had I waited another 20 minutes I could have been a goner. My osteoarthitis is worse(now I have to see another specialist) and I have medical bills out the wazoo. Prednisone is a very very dangerous drug nd the doctors are still prescribing it. What is wrong with this picture.

I am so relieved to have found this site... i have been miserable for almost 2 weeks, i broke out with hives last week and never found the cause but with that and some breathing problems they put me on prednisone. I have been miserable since, i couldn't eat drink sleep or do anything else at all pretty much and i have had diarrhea, and a ton of other symptoms... i feel bloated acid reflex muscle aches headaches dizziness chest pain & pressure very weak feeling mood swings and depression the jitters and heart racing and from what i read and researched this is all from the steroid prednisone.... thankfully the doctor ended my dosage sooner than it was prescribed and last night i took my last pill... i now am just wondering when or how long will it be till i feel myself again and can have a good nights rest?? I will never use this medicine again!! I am just soo relieved to have found some answers on here.

I had a cortisone injection into my left knee on Friday, June 5th and immediately started to react. Within an hour, I had extreme redness and heat in my face, neck and upper chest. Wheezing, hives in throat and mouth and behind my ears. Extreme headache that came on suddenly and started in the back of my head and stretched to the front. Dizziness, chest discomfort. I went to the ER and was given a nebulizer treatment, benadryl IV and prednisone because the doctors at the ER felt that I must have had an allergic reaction to some medication that was mixed with the cortisone injection, because they said that to be allergic to cortisone is very rare. About 20 minutes after they gave me 60mg of oral prednisone, they started my benadryl IV. I felt such a hot rush to my face, my ears were burning. Eventually, the reaction calmed down and they sent me home with a prednisone taper and benadryl every 4 to 6 hrs. Sunday morning, I took 60mg of the prednisone and within 20 minutes I knew that I was in trouble so I took 50mg of benadryl and on the advice of my doctor, called an ambulance. In the ambulance, I was given oxygen, a nebulizer and more benadryl IV. After that morning, I knew that my problem was the steroid. I hadn't had any sleep since Thursday, I had been nauseous ands been battling chest discomfort and a very bad headache. I spoke with my doctor on Monday and he wanted me to take Atarax,25mg, every 3 to 4 hours. I saw him on Tuesday and I went to an allergist on Wednesday. She started me on 50 mg of zyrtec twica a day and 25mg of Atarax at night to see if this would help the reaction that I continue to have. She said that it could be several weeks, at least, that I will continue to react, until the injectable steroid is out of my system. It had been 13 days, and Im still reacting.

I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis at the end of 2007 and have been on prednisone since then. I started on about 105mg a week and am currently trying to reduce it but it is really hard as the moment the dosage goes down I lose all mobility and cannot even get out of bed. I am only 23 years old and really feeling the disease to the extent that I cannot even cope with my life. The prednisone has really taken its toll on me and the side effects are crazy! I just want to go back to my old self as I am finding it sooo hard to get through a single day. My side effects include:
Insomnia, tooth sensitivity, depression, anxiety, mood swings, moon face (my face is so swollen that I cant stand looking in the mirror anymore, dizziness, temper, feelings of uselessness, nightmares, night sweats, water retention, and to top it all off the arthritis is getting worse and I am in constant pain. Is there anything anyone can suggest then please help me!

Hi everyone, I have just read all thirty pages of posts to try to find some answers to my crazy reaction to prednisone. My thoughts are with you all since I have had an usually severe reaction to prednisone. I was on prednisone for 1 week in October 2008 at 60 mg/day for a sinus surgery. I am still having the following side effects at full force:
Axiety to the point I can't socialize
mood swings
hot/sweating even in freezing weather
whole body shakes
severe migraines
tooth sensitivity
muscle pains
extreme thirst (I drink almost 2 gallons/day)
hungry all the time
moon face
water retention around waist
acne
hair loss
rapid heart rate
dizziness
nightmares
night sweats
high blood pressure
high hear rate
I'm not exaggerating, my parent's can contend to that. I do have a history of having sever reactions to medication and I've had all the gland and blood tests which all check out. I never had a single one of these before the prednisone - I was a healthy 22 year old.
I was wondering if any could tell me when this hell will end - my job and well-being depends on it!

My Doctor put me on prednisone 10mg for inflammation in my neck. I did 5 first day 5 second day 4 fourth day and when it was time for day 3 he took me off my upper body from waist to neck hurt so bad if anyone would touch me, blotchy to touch no visible rash stomach cramping nausea and I described sitting down as if I had a very bad sunburn, hunched over. I called his office and they said doesn't sound like a sided effect to stop taking well that night Thurs. I was in the ER for a what they are calling an "allergic reaction" gave me benadryl and sent me home next day very groggy, body still hurt not stomach and slept all day. Saturday night back at the ER bad headache and neck and face felt tingly very weird after a million test sent home. Sunday felt the same. Monday went to doctor's office with abdominal cramping nausea and tingling face/headache had an scan of head and more test gave me anxiety pills (I think they think I'm nuts now). Tuesday back at his office feeling worse more test everything so far is normal gave me something for headache (it worked!) and sent me to see a specialist to make sure it was not my appendix which it's not. I'm Still having stomach cramps upper stomach above belly button no more headache occasional tingly of face and no appetite having a stomach ultra sound today. I'm just wondering now if anyone has had the same symptoms? Starting to think maybe I am crazy. I wasn't on it very long so I'm sooo confused. I was also told at my 2nd ER trip that they didn't believe I could have an allergic reaction very impossible.

I was recently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and was hospitalized in March 2008 for pancreatitis - a reaction I had to Asacol. A week later I was discharged then went back to the hospital a day later for a severe flare-up. There, they started me on antibiotics and prednisone through an IV. When I left the hospital I started taking 40mg. The initial side affects were severe sweaty palms, racing heartbeat and dizziness. Within 2 weeks I started experiencing insomnia, acne, hair loss, extreme mood swings, depression, anxiety, and was OCD on top of the sweating to where the skin on my palms was starting to peel. It suddenly got out of control fast. I became suicidal - nearly attempted suicide twice. I was paranoid, had severe lack of concentration to the point that I felt cognitively delayed, couldn't do anything on my own, lacked emotion, and felt that I WAS crazy. Luckily my family was very supportive. During the second suicidal attempt they begged me to stay at a psychiatric hospital. I did and was there for about three days. A week later I was finally completely tapered off prednisone. Within 2 weeks I was completely normal and back to myself. My three months of hell was finally over. I tell myself I will never take prednisone ever again but the truth is it might be the only thing down the line that can save my life. I hate this drug and I don't recommend anyone take it unless it's the last option you have.

I was on prednisone while getting over pneumonia to help with my breathing. I was only on it for 7 days and the doctor didn't have me go off of it gradually. I missed the last dose on the 7th day and by bedtime, my muscles were sore enough it almost hurt to lay down. I took the last pill that night before I went to bed and had no muscle soreness in the morning. After that, the muscle soreness came back, along with dizziness. My pulse was also higher than normal. Two days later at night, I was still having muscle soreness and dizziness, although not nearly as but, but I was having a lot of trouble breathing and my pulse would refuse to go below 100 no matter what I did and the problems continued thought the night. The next morning I went to the clinic that prescribed me the predisone because the information they gave me said to see a doctor if these problems persisted. I told them I thought I might be having a predisone withdrawal because my mother, a nurse, said it was the most likely problem from experience. They completely ignored that saying it had been several days since I've stopped the steroid and kept asking me about my asthma (inhalers weren't working and it was definitely not an asthma attack -- I've had plenty of those, to all different degrees) and ended up giving me medicine for anxiety, which helped the closing of my throat, but none of my other symptoms. Three days later, my resting pulse is down to 80, but my breathing is so much worse than it would be with just my normal asthma and taking my inhalers as much as is allowed. I had no noticeable symptoms when I was on the prednisone except being less able to sleep. If it keeps up, I intend to go to a different doctor to see what is really happening, but I don't think it's 'normal' to have the withdrawal symptoms for this long after only having it for 7 days. I know I took it when I was younger (I'm 22), but I don't remember ever having issues going off of it before.

I was put on prednisone for asthma. I tapered down from 80 mg to 10 mg over 2 weeks. After coming off of the prednisone, I experienced nausea, extreme dizziness, felt disoriented, and had muscle weakness so bad that I could barely stand up. After several trips to the emergency room, my doctor, and an endocrinologist, they figured that I needed to be tapered off of the prednisone more slowly. The endocrinologist started me back on 10 mg of prednisone and tapered me down to 2.5 mg. Since I have stopped taking the prednisone, I have experienced dizziness, headaches, tremors, a rapid pulse rate, blurry vision and a sensitivity to light. I have been off the prednisone for two weeks now and every day is different. I have some good days and some bad days. Although I have my strength back and the nausea has subsided, the dizziness is debilitating and it seems that my balance and fine motor coordination is off. I feel very mentally foggy. The doctors do not seem to have any answers for me as to why all of this is happening. It has been a very scary and frustrating experience. I am concerned that the prednisone has done some serious damage to my nervous system. Has anyone ever had these side effects? Do they eventually subside and how long will it take? It has been the longest month of my life dealing with all of the effects of this medicine. Any advice would be appreciated.

Extreme Weakness, extreme excessive sweating, nausea, dizziness, itching, terrible headaches. In addition, I seemed to have contacted a moderate case of the flu. At least I had what seemed like the flu. However it is possible that it was just more of the same from the prednisone. My doctor gave me prednisone for a pinched nerve in my neck and a herniated disk in the same #7vertebrea. He gave me 12 days. As soon as I started taking it, I began to feel very weak, I had headaches, terrible exploding headaches. I found that I began to itch on my arm for no apparent reason, except for a bracelet in the area.In addition, I began to have excessive sweating, extreme sweating, the water would be pouring down my face. At that time, I would feel my heart pounding have some dizziness, and just overall bad feeling. It was debilitating, I spent a lot of time on the couch because I could not function in my daily activities. I went from exercising for 90 minutes to barely being able to get through 15 minutes. My question is will I go back to "normal" when this medicine gets out of my system. What is the half life of this drug? Should I do a detox of some sort. Worst of all, the problem with my neck has not really resolved and I will probably need some other sort of intervention. I never got that burst of energy that other people experienced with this medication.

I was prescribed the 4mg methylprednisolone pack along with 50 mg tramadol for acute tendinitis in my wrist. I took the first 3 days of the prednisone and only 2 doses of the tramadol over the three days. For a total of 60 mg of prednisone.
The first day I had hot flashes and insomnia but attributed it to the tramadol because I had never taken it before and had taken the prednisone several years ago for poison ivy with no adverse reactions. I didn't take the tramadol the second night and then took it again last night along with my daily dose of prednisone. I had extreme difficulty falling asleep, heart burn, hot flashes; and tossed and turned all night trying to fall asleep. At around 2am, I began to have difficulty breathing, tightening in my chest, confusion, and racing thoughts. It felt as though my throat was closing up on me. My anxiety progressed to the point that I was pacing back and forth. I woke my husband up and told him to prepare to take me to the ER. After calling my insurance's 24 hour help line, it was recommended that I go to the ER. I had an x-ray, blood work, urine drug screen, and echocardiogram. Luckily, everything was negative. The ER doctor told me that I likely had a reaction to the prednisone and commented that some people will experience these symptoms when taking it. He stated that he had a similar reaction when he took it and it felt like he was climbing the walls, which is an accurate description of my experience that night. He recommended that I either stop taking it altogether or call my primary care provider and cut it down. He prescribed me xanax and administered some to me at the ER which greatly helped. The next day I stopped taking the pred but am still having dizziness, chest tightness, hot flashes, and mental dullness. I have decided to never take this medication again. Fortunately, I don't have any of the physical sx that some have experienced, and my heart goes out to you. I think the mental symptoms were traumatic enough for me and can't imagine having both as I would be a basket case. I have mood swings, some melancholia, and am very fatigued.
I think it is imperative to research any medication that is prescribed to you before you take it. Many providers will say that side effects are rare, but my experience is that side effects are more common than rare. My prayers go out to those of you who are going through what I am going through. I hope that it clears our systems quickly because this is no way to live. I'd rather put up with the pain of tendinitis or carpel tunnel than to have these symptoms.

Does anyone have the side effect of reduced sensation of smell and taste?
I just got off of 7 days of 20 mg. Prednisone twice a day for severe poison ivy. I've always had the reducing dosages before but went to a new young doctor who said this was better. I experienced extreme insomnia for several nights. Last night I slept better, but today I'm feeling dizzy and have slight soreness in my back and neck. I'm really hoping this all clears up soon since my son is getting married in 12 days and I don't want to be dizzy and moon-faced at the wedding.

I was on Prednisone for just over two weeks for a bad skin rash (allergic reaction). I went to the ER they gave me an injection on Prednisone. The next day my Doctor puts me on 40mg a day for 10 days then down to 20mg, and then 10mg. The side effects were (and are) crazy. Blood sugar and Blood pressure are through the roof. My heart pounds, races, skips beats. Hands shaking, nervous, and panic attacks. Yeah, sure, the rash is gone, but I feel like a train wreck. I took my last dose 2 days ago, and have been told it can take 2 to 4 weeks for this to get completely out of my system and end the side effects. Can anybody else verify this?? Good god, what a mess!!

I was put on Prednisonsone for Uveitis, inflammation of the eye. He started me on 20mg at 9 pills a day, then each week it was lowered to 6 pills then now i'm on 3 pills and then next week it will be 1 1/2 pill and i'll be off. I got the puffy face, my feet swelled, everytime i hate my stomach bloated and hurt, my face and neck turns red, i stayed hungry although i fought the temptation of eating for not wanting to gain a lot of weight, which I don't think I've gained any. But now I wake up in the middle of the night and severe knee pain, it feels like my knees they are in some kind of device that is crushing my bones they hurt so bad. i caught a bad cough and it's been around now for about 2 weeks and won't go away, i told the nurse about it and she says, i probably just got what everyone else has gotten, just a bad cough, well what's if it's some kind of infection? I look like a chipmunk, my face is so puffy. When i get off these prednisone in another week I WON'T BE going back on them, no matter what the case. I'm in more pain being on them and have more side effects while on them than the problem i was having with uveitis. I think some co workers thank I'm over reacting, but they're not here they don't see all the pain and frustration i'm going through while on this drug. The leg pain just started this weekend and i Know i can't deal with waking up everynight like this in severe pain. Everyone just makes me feel like i'm over reactin and it's nice to know that somebody out there is going through the same thing. Any comments will be great.

I have taken, for the first time in my life for poison oak, prednisone- 60 mg for 3 days, 30 mg for 1 day, and 20 for 1 day. A week after the dose ended, I took another dose of it. As soon as that was over, the symptoms began with extreme low energy and dizziness, and eyes not feeling to well. I have been like this for a week, and would like to know how long this will last? And what can I do to speed up the process?

I was on a Prednisone taper for 7 days (bronchitis). I have been off for 16 days now. I am still suffering from BAD headaches, head pressure and dizziness (also racing heart) - off and on??? Does anyone know how long it takes to get this stuff out of your system? My first day after finishing it my headache and dizziness got so severe that I threw up 7 times over the next 24 hours?
Is it something that I am eating or drinking that is 'reactiviting' the side effects of the Prednisone? I hate this.
Thank you.

I am a 25 year old, who was perfectly healthy prior to recently when I was diagnosed with Nephritic Syndrome and Minimal Change Disease and possibly FSGS (kidney diseases) I was put on 60 mg of Prednisone for 1 month then I was lowered to 40 mg for one month and I am then dropping to 30 mg. I am also taking Fosamax for my bones and a Vitamin D pill because my last lab test showed low vitamin D levels.
I am dizzy constantly and can not live a normal life, I can not drive or do any activities that I had previously done. My chest is so tight and constricted all of the time, my heart rate is so fast and pounds at my chest. I have no energy to do anything, I can barely open a door at times. I am beginning to grow unwanted hair on my face. My abdomen is always bloated. I have pain in my rib cage, and shoulders. I feel very sore throughout my entire body. I do not really sleep at night, so I look very tired all the time.
I have actually lost weight, I have no appetite at all. I am down 10-15lbs.
Now for the Pro- my Kidney Diseases are currently in remission and this has happened much faster than the Nephrologist had thought.
I am very anxious to getting my life back to normal and getting off the Prednisone.
Has any one else experienced increased heart rate, chest tightness, or rib pain?
I wish everyone the best in their roads to recovery!!

Hello.
I was started on Prednisone on Saturday (3/15) for Bronchitis. So far I have taken 40mg, 40mg, 30mg, 30mg, 20mg, - I am to take 20mg for two more days than 10mg for three days. I also just finished a Z-Pack of antibiotics and am taking Mucinex and Ventolin HFA...
I have head pressure, dizziness, and weird visual disturbances. The problem I am having is my breathing feels WORSE on the Prednisone??? Is this possible??? I feel like I am losing my mind. I have insomnia and am extremely jittery. I have never taken Prednisone before - but want so badly to breath better - but it is not helping and in fact seems to making the problem worse?
Has this every happened to anyone? Please help I am so frightened.....
Thank you

My mother was put on Prednisone 3 weeks ago because of severe muscle pain (15 mg at first and increased to 60 mg). After she starting taking it she began to have weakness in her muscles/joints and was unable to walk by the end of the week. She also had severe water retention and could not catch her breath. Most of all she was very weak all the time and could not seem to sleep at all. She wound up in the hospital and was classified with a type of Congestive Heart Failure due to the excessive dosage given by a pain doctor. She had to be admitted to a Rehabilitation Center where they have now cut her down to 10 mg a day and she is trying to take Physical Therapy to walk again. She is fighting with depression and overwhelming feelings of anxiety. She still cannot sleep and wonders if she will ever by back to normal again. Just a month ago she was living a normal life and because of the pain, was given this medication. I wonder if the benefits outweigh the horrible side effects she has experienced. After reading some of the responses above I see others are having similar side effects.
Any encouragement from someone with a positive long term outcome would be beneficial at this time to her. She feels very helpless in her situation.

I agree, for me this is a horrible drug! This is the 2nd time my allergist prescribed it to me (last time was this past summer and I had severe panic attacks and thought I was losing my mind) this resulted in me returning back to my GP and him putting me back on Paxil (which I had been off of for a year). I was extremely reluctant to use this again but thought i might be able to manage it this time (with the help of Paxil).
My allergist prescribed Prednisone to me 2 weeks ago (5mg 3x's day for 3 days then, 2 2x's day then 1 for 5 days) I made up until the last 3 pills. I had severe brain fog and felt like I was floating through space. I couldn't even remember driving to work and parking my car! Extremely fatigued (I have diabetes (which is under control, but I had to keep checking my bg because I thought my sugar was dropping to low). Now, within the last week of taking the Prednisone I have experienced aching in my kidneys and I think I have a kidney infection.
Can Prednisone do this to you??
I am calling the doctor tomorrow. Today is the first day without Prednisone and I feel like I am totally out of it - really spaced out, dizzy, panicky and a bit nausea.
How long does it take for you to get Prednisone out of your system?

After bith my childrens births I have experienced a enigmatic skin disease / disorder which has been unclassified by dermatologists and specialists. First I experienced blisters on my torso, which crusted over and followed with severe urticaria-like wheels all over my body. Doctors placed me on Prednisone 5mg tablets ( 40mg daily) for 4 months, in which time the symptoms subsided , but the side -effects for this Mother was terrible!!! I experienced a 12kg weight-gain, uncontrollable appetite, excessive sweating, dizziness , shortness of breath and extreme hairloss. My skin thinned and OI bruised very quickly. No diagnosis could be made. After the induced -birth of my second child now, I have the same episode and had been placed on Prednisone for the second time just to cope with the swelling.
I am currently in my 7th week of using 10mg - 15mg daily with an anti-histamine. I hate the re-occuring side-effects and am very scared of all the long-term damage. Does anyone have any idea how to boost your own natural immune-defence system while being bombarded witha immuno-suppressant like Prednisone??!!!!
I believe that your own body ws made to heal itself or be healed by natural means... but how and what?? I am desperate, and have been following a anti-candida like diet ( no yeast + sugars + preserved foods) Thus far I have not been able to kick the symptoms. Any help out there would be much appreciated. Have someone experienced the same sort of symptoms???

I wish I had never took them but I have a severe Diarrhea problem since before Thanksgiving of last year and my Dr. used Steroids and I am on 5-600 mg. pills of Sulfasalazine and he says-Dr. I may never be able to get off this drug. I am just now getting a regular bowel movement. I have nausea, headache, stomach pains, depression and I am going to stay off of them even though I have these withdrawals.

Hi guys,
I have written several replies to people on the side effects of Prednisone.
Mainly I have dealt with how long it takes for your body to go back to normal after being on it. This is because i was on it for ten years and have been off it for three and have dealt with side effects and adrenal insufficiency.
I am trying to create awareness for what people go through on Prednisone and also trying to create some support for people out there.
So I have recently created a group on Facebook called Survivors of Prednisone. For those of you who are on Facebook you might be interested enough to have a look and maybe find other people who you can share things with and know that you are not alone. Also I can answer questions if you want to ask me things.
good luck and hope to see you there,
Anne

I have been on 50 mg. of prednisone for about 6 weeks. After 2 weeks, I became very dizzy, weak and have blurred vision. I am now tapering off by 5 mg. every 3 days. I am still experiencing dizziness, weakness and blurred vision. My doctor said by the time I'm down to 15mg. per day, I should start to feel better - not soon enough for me. It is one of the worst experiences I have every had. I have IBD and the prednisone did not help one bit.

I hope that what I'm going through is a side effect of this stuff. I'm a 31 year old, non smoking man. Almost three weeks ago I noticed a rash starting on my arms and torso, it looked exactly like poison ivy, except there is no likely way that I could have come in contact with it. I went to see my doctor as a precaution. My normal PCP was booked, so I saw another doctor at the practice. She said "we may never know what this is, but it should go away soon." She told me to wait and keep an eye onit. At this point I really had no other issues, it didn't itch too much.
Four days later, the rash had spread all over my torso and arms. I was starting to feel bad, and spent the weekend in bed with dizzyness and nausea. I called the doctor and she phoned in a prescription for Amoxicillin. I was on the Amoxicillin for 4 days before I went back to see her as my symptoms had not gotten any better. She put me on a 9day cycle of Prednisone. The prednisone cleared up the rash mostly, but throughout the cycle I felt weak, nausea, dizzy. It sucked. I read a lot about side effects online and was hopeful that this would end with the endinig of the prescription. Tuesday morning (8/14) I took my last pill. Yesterday I could barely function. I felt dizzier than normal and had a very hard time getting through the day. Now it's Thursday 48+ hours since my last pill, and I still feel dizzy, like I'm in a Fog. Does anyone know if this is possibly still due to prednisone? If I wake up tomorrow like this I'll plead for an appointment with my PCP. Any help is appreciated.

My husband has been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. He is only 37 years old and has lived a very healthy life so far. Two weeks ago he started showing colitis symptoms and between Monday, Jan. 29 to Wed. Feb. 7 (9 days!) he lost 28 pounds! He was given a shot of Prednisone in the ER and prescribed a short regime for it with a gradual decline to ween him off of it as soon as possible. He seems to have the worst and oddest side effects. Has anyone ever experienced this with Prednisone...He slurrs his speech, drools almost constantly, has trouble swallowing, and his face from the upper lip down looks like his face is hanging there. (I had his doctor check for stroke and there was none.) That on top of the nausea, vomitting, dizziness, weakness, and being constantly sleepy. I know it all sounds real bad but he has actually improved since taking the prednisone. At least he's alive and getting better. Hope this helps.

I was prescribed prednisone for a severe case of poison ivy. 60mg for 10 days, then tapering over 2 more weeks. Side effects were dizziness, sleeplessness, hunger, thirst, slow healing, pent up energy, acne, etc. My doctor also prescribed Ranitidine 300mg 2x day because it's a histamine blocker, and that helped with the all-over itching. Ranitidine is normally prescribed as a stomach aid (for ulcers/acid reflux I think), so that may have helped prevent any of the stomach/digestive side effects. I also tried to follow the recommended dietary suggestions that I learned about. I focused on potassium, calcium, protein, zinc rich foods, lots of healthy vegetables, vitamin E, etc. Try searching the internet for "prednisone diet" or "prednisone nutrition". I think all that helped! Good luck.

I was on 40 mg a day and then after 5 or 6 days gradually reduced dosage as prescribed by my Dr. I kept breaking out with hives and the Dr. then put me on Prednisone. It took care of the hives, however, I have had awful side affects. Nights sweats, severe anxiety, severe bloating in my stomach, can't sleep, increased appetite, dizziness, moody and depressed. I hope I never have to take this medicine again.

I was given Prednisone, full dosage, for 9 days for an ear problem. 3 days after stopping the Prednisone, I was having mood swings, body aches, shakes and dizziness and verdigo. My Primary Care put me back on Prednisone, 10 mg., twice per day for 10 days. It has been about 1 month now, and I am still feeling nausea, headaches, dizziness, verdigo, body aches and I have to lie down a lot. Is anyone out there having the same problems and if so, how long does it take to get the Prednisone out of your body? My Primary care thinks I am going through surgical menopause and wants me to take low dosage premarin, but I have a family history of breast cancer, Mother and my Aunt/her sister. I am 58 years old. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Dale Rodberg

I was on prednisone for 3 days. Took my first pill in the evening and another the next day. Took another that night. I was up all night discussing thing with my wife. I WAS WIRED. I crashed the next day, almost quit my job (I was heavily under stress at work). I went home, STILL WIRED, and shuttled my kids around all day. I started to think about my experiences as a kid. I was under severe stress. That night, I collapsed on my laundry room floor. I hallucinated all night. My wife and children were extremely frightened. They called the paramedics. I went to the emergency room. I litterly thought I had died. At the emergency room, I was disruptive and they admitted me. I spent 4 nights in a psychiatric ward, sedated with drugs but unable to differentiated my flashbacks from the past from the prednisone. It has taken nearly a week, to finally come to grips with the fact that I am not crazy. It was this drug and some stress (albeit, more than usual) that sent me into a life-changing experience. BE VERY CAREFUL if you are taking Prednisone, can't sleep, and are under stress. Your life may change forever. Mine did.

I was prescribed Prednisone for only 5 days- my doc said to take it to rule out inflamed sinuses as a cause of my dizzy/lightheaded symptoms.
Well, this medication did everything but take away my dizziness. On my 2nd night I was feeling anxious and had difficulty falling asleep. On my 3rd night, the it got worse. On the 4th night, I felt like something was crawling under my skin- it was so uncomfortable- I kept rubbing my arms and paced back and forth until the feeling went away about 2 hours later. On the last night, I woke up from a nap feeling tender all over- my ribcage, my shoulders, under my arms, my neck, jaw. My jaw even appeared to be swelled. My body was so sensitive to touch that I couldn't even carry my purse on my shoulder the next day as I walked to a doctor's appointment. My doc told me that the tenderness was probably due to a virus that the Prednisone had initially supressed. What do you think? Anybody else ever had these side effects or effects after completion of the Prednisone?
Oh and about the dizziness, it just got worse. I will never take this medication again.

Dosage of Prednizone was only 40 mg once a day for 3 days, and tappered off everly 3 days down to one tablet. This was prescribed for needed LUNG EXPANSION DUE TO BREATHING PROBLEMS. The following side effects manifested; I felt like superwomen the second day, thought this stuff is magic...however, by the third morning, Thrush infection appeared in my throat and mouth, had extreme, sharp pains when swallowing, dizziness, general weakness from the Thrush like early flu - this Thrush looks like white spots or white coating & SPREADS WITHOUT THE AIDE OF anti-fungal mouth tablet to irradicate. IMMUNE SYSTEMS WEAKENED BY PREDNIZONE. Insomnia also experienced to the point of only three hrs. sleep a night. I stopped taking the predizone immediately and continued the anti-fungal mouth table of clotrimazole (10 mg) to clear up the Thrush infection and finally got back to normal. No more for me!!!!

These side effects are pretty much what everyone else here is experiencing.
Currently on 60mg/day ( the pharmacist refused to give it to me believing I was a junkie that either modified the prescription or that the doctor did a mistake ... fighting with your pharmacist is something new to me ); should be lowered to 40mg/day in january and in theory will only be taking this for a couple more weeks after that.
Really have a hard time believing my body is changing on a daily basis and I keep finding out I may be effected by one of the multiple side effects that seem limitless.
I'm 22, have a past of kidney issues, at this stage I seem to be near end stage reinal disease (ESRD).
Was put on prednisone to try and lower an inflimmation inside the capilaries ( not sure if that's the right word ) inside the kidneys ...
Have been on this for about a month:
at first experienced a lot of dizziness, severe numbness ( in my outter members ( hands feet ), insomnia ( I am starting to get that under control but only if I pull all nighters once or twice a week to flip my body clock around ), and ACNE!
I have barely had any acne in my whole life and suddenly it's growing massively by the day, one more thing to worry about.
I am not a skinny person to say the least, but with this I am eating way more then I can humanly handle yet I never feel stuffed.

I am so glad I found this site. Now I know that I am not crazy or imagining things. I took 40 mg daily for 14 days for what turned out to be arthritis in my elbow, then was to taper to 20 mg. Two days after tapering to 20 mg I was totally out of control/non-functional/suicidal. I can barely walk/talk/think, and am so depressed that I don't know how I can go on from minute to minute. Brain fog, weakness, insomnia, paranoia, huge buzzing in my head, went from eating everything in sight to not eating, dizziness, general hatefulness. I had to see a doctor and was tapered off (last day was Saturday June 26) and still I am totally useless. I just want to run and hide and scream and scream. NO ONE SHOULD TAKE THIS MEDICINE UNLESS IT IS USED FOR A LIFE THREATENING CONDITION!!!!! Can anyone tell me how long it takes for this stuff to leave your body? I can't go on like this. I can't believe how lightly the medical profession prescribes this medication.

I received prednisone intravenously at the hospital to prevent a severe reaction from receiving platelet transfusion. I have a bleeding disorder and IgA deficiency. Because of my bleeding disorder I have to receive platelet transfusion before any surgical procedures. When I receive the platelet transfusion 20 mins into receiving the platelets my face feels flush and a tightness and pain in my facial bones. I get a sudden headache with severe pressure pain in my head so severe that you feel as if your head is going to explode. My doctor recommended the use of prednisone to prevent me from having this reaction. 20 minutes after receiving the prednisone intravenously I felt my face turn flush with facial bone pain and a pressure around my face and top of my head. I felt the pressure in my head, but not the pain which I would get from the platelet transfusion. That night I had dizziness, severe headache, nausea, stomach pains, severe sweating, over heated, weakness and unable to concentrate. This went on for 2 days straight. Today is the 3rd day and I still can feel a slight pressure on the top of my head. I also felt eye pressure and I still have the headaches. I am schedule to see my doctor in 3 weeks and I will tell him that I will not take Prednisone ever again. I am sure there are other medications that can be given.
