Reglan and anxiety

I was put on Reglan for acid reflux first 4x a day 10 mg,then my doctor used it to 15 mg 4 x a day. I started to get more and more anxiety,nervous and jittery I couldn't concentrate and started to have crying outbursts. I finally had like I felt a nervous breakdown and the doctor on call prescribed anti anxiety just to calm me down. He said to get off the Reglan immediately! I was on it for 2 months and I'm still fighting anxiety after 3 weeks of being off it. The twitching of my eye comes and goes better then everyday like it was. I wish I would have never heard of this drug,but I trusted my doctor was doing the best thing for me.

Well i started taking Reglan for the increase of my milk supply. As i started to read through all of your side affects a few of them hit me to think that maybe i feel the way i do because of this medicine. I have been having an altered state of mind and anxiety the only way i can explain it is my mind feels NOT THERE!! pretty much and it lasts for several minutes. (i'm scared to drive now) I just had a baby so i'm thinking at first it's maybe because of no sleep and taking care of two other children during the day was causing these problems but as i research this drug more and more i know now that it was the Reglan causing and still causing my problems my children in no way can be the ones causing some of these problems after all i've been taking care of them just fine for several years before i started taking this drug. So i wasn't to thank everyone for sharing there stories as well because it has really made me determined exactly what and where my problems are coming from... "Now it's time for me to find some help for this" Thanks again!

About a week ago I was having a severe headache that had not subsided for about two days. I knew it wasn't a migraine because I had suffered with migraines before and the pain was not at all similar. The symptoms I was having were fatigue, severe weakness, and the two day headache. The doctors then ran the usual blood tests and ruled out my adrenals for the fatigue and weakness issues. Just as a side note, I also suffer from Depression and Anxiety so keep that in mind as I continue. The doctor decided to give me Reglan with Benadryl in my IV. Bad choice! About 20 minutes later I started to feel droggy and in an altered state of mind. I felt as if my body was heavy and my sense of tough was lessoned. Then the fun part came. Without my control my left arm would shot up straight in the air as if I was a 6 year old trying to get the attention of my teacher. It was horrible because I would feel a tingling sensation right before it would occur. So I started to time the sensation and hold my arm down, however, I almost hit my mother who was beside me. So just to recap, here I am sleepy, droggy, in another state of mind, and with my hand flinging in the air. I was not a happy camper. Did I mention this all toke place at 2-3 in the morning! The doctor just told me that the reaction was an adverse reaction that some patients get. Thanks Doc ;)! The only way to offset the Reglan is by administering more Benadryl. So if you are ever found in the position where you are having an adverse reaction to Reglan try some Benadryl. The next day when the rest of my panels came back I have hypothyroidism, which means that my body does not produce enough thyroid enzymes to support my thyroid function. Hypothyroidism causes depression, weight loss or gain, fatigue, weakness, and many more symptoms. Good Luck to everyone and stay off the Reglan not a fun trip to be on.....

It really is surprising that this drug is used. I had an episode when I was 18. My parents were out of town and I got a really bad migraine. I called them and they told me I should go to the emergency room. I went by myself and I don't remember what they gave me, but it must have been Reglan. With in minutes of the IV I got really nervous and agitated. I wanted to crawl out of my skin. I buzzed the nurse button like 3 times and after 10 minutes and no one came I panicked. I pulled the IV out and left the hospital. Crazy I know but I couldn't think clearly. I went home and after a few hours I was okay.

Well this brings me to 9 years later and to my most recent experience. I am pregnant and I got a really nasty migraine. I was puking, couldn't see out of my right eye. Since there wasn't anything I could take I called my OB. He told me I should go to the ER and so I went with my husband. They said they wanted to give me Reglan and Benadryl, since I didn't know that was what they gave my when I was 18 I said okay. With in minutes I was having the same reaction I did 9 years ago. I went nuts. I started freaking out. I told my husband I wanted to leave. I needed the IV out of me. My skin was itchy and burning. I was nervous, shaking, and having a hard time breathing. When I husband got the nurse she was really condescending. She was like, “Do you have a history panic attacks?” I said, "no." Then she got the Dr., who ordered more Benadryl. After about 15 more minutes I calmed down. This was an extremely unpleasant experience; I will never take this medicine again.

I was given reglan to aid in digestion while I was being treated for chirosis, and had some negative effects from it, cant remember them now but was taken off of it. I still fight small bouts of depression and anxiety. Now I have to wonder why a doctor from a very reputable hospital would prescribe reglan to a patient with a long history of drinking (that alone is a depression symptom) a pill that has suicidal thoughts as a possible side effect of reglan.

I was given Reglan in an IV early in my pregnancy for constant vomiting and dehydration. I was told it was the safest anti-nausea drug during pregnancy. As soon as the IV went in my arm I experienced anxiety and panic. By day three on this drug, I was in a severe panic attack with severe depression and thoughts of suicide. I have no history of mental illness. I went to the ER for help to talk with a counselor or psychiatrist. I can remember crying violently and saying that I was going to die. The ER doctor had me committed to a locked ward for the suicidal. I was kept there for 12 hours and released once the doctor at this facility was told by myself that I had no history of these feelings. She said that it was a side effect from the Reglan. This drug has caused me to still have a low grade depression. I have two kids and one on the way. I blame this drug for altering the quality of my life and my family's lives. If anyone knows a lawyer that deals with Reglan cases, let me know. I'd like to fight this. I can't believe this drug is still on the market.

I was prescribed Reglan 3x/day for the specific purpose of increasing my breast milk supply after my twins came home from the hospital. Although I was already nervous and tired, it seems that after three weeks on this pill, this medication had aggravated my symptoms and had in fact made me very sick. I was experiencing episodes of severe panic, passing out, dizziness, blurred vision, "brain fog", general anxiety, rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure, as well as all of the listed side effects.

I was certainly not a person who suffered from these kind of symptoms prior to taking this medication, and although my doctor said it would be more likely that this was some kind of postpartum adjustment disorder, I did feel a gradual coming on and slacking off of the intensity of these symptoms around my building up and weening from the medicine. It is 2 months later and I still feel as though I am recovering.

Whatever I was going through, this medication should not have been given to me, or anyone who is in the postpartum time,as it AT LEAST aggravated my symptoms. I have read a lot from others who have posted stories of terrible long-lasting neurologiacal/mood disorders that they believe have been caused by Reglan. Also it seems that like me, these people have endured extended periods of suffering even after stopping use. I echo the sentiment of caution that has been expressed by others about using this drug. These side effects should be further investigated.

As a nursing mother, after three months of breastfeeding, my milk was decreasing. I was reluctant to take reglan, especially after picking up my prescription at the pharmacy and reading the side effects, I circled back to the drive through window and questioned the pharmacist as to whether I should really be taking it while breast-feeding. I also called and spoke with the nurse at my OB/GYN. Everyone continued telling me it was safe.I've taken reglan from 1 to 3 times a day for 3 months. I ended up taking it because I was convinced that the good trumped the bad since I would be able to feed my baby more of my milk. Anyway, yesterday, I found this site and now more than ever I know that I made the right decision to stop taking reglan immediately. My side-effects have included severe mood swings, depression, ,very negative thoughts, and anger. Reglan was the only drug that I was taking and l don't have a history of being angry or depressed. I'm looking forward to feeling like my normal self again and if I could turn back time, I would definitely breast feed my baby until my (natural) milk deminished and then use formula. That is my plan starting today. BREAST-FEEDING MOHTERS, FROM MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH REGLAN, PLEASE DON'T TAKE IT. Formula is better than the risk.

My little boy who is now 4 has been off the Reglan for two years. I really thought my husband and I were doing the right thing by putting him on the Reglan at 8 months because he was vomitting blood. The gastric doctor said he had to be on it plus prevacid .Well I WISH WE HAD KNOWN THE SIDE EFFECTS. Now my son is in the process of going to a Neurologist next week because they think he might have Tardive Dyskinesia . He has the symptoms of it on and off for a year now and the doctors have said it is from stress not possible because all of the stress therapist we have taken him to say he is not stressed. I would like to say one thing do not put your child on this drug because it could be the biggest mistake of your life . This is a disease that can not be curred.

My 8 year old daughter was prescribed a low-dose of Reglan each night at bedtime to prevent morning nausea and motion sickness. For that it worked. Unfortunately, over time she became more and more "worried' then "anxious" and even developed obsessive-compulsive symptoms and became nearly psychotic. The doc who prescribed it did mention to look for "tics" but not anxiety (altho he did confirm later that it "occassionally" occurs). She was on it for three weeks before we made the connection. The psychiatrist refused to entertain the thought that her psychiatric problems were due to Reglan reaction, but after consulting other physicians and researching internet sites, we were convinced this is what she indeed suffered. It took nearly three months for her anxiety to completely vanish and I am happy to say, she is fine now. Her stomach aches come and go, but treatment with diet and allergy elimation seems to help. This drug can be dangerous but doctors should be better informed and equiped to deal with a very-real side-effect.
