I had septocaine for 2 minor fillings in feb 2008. It took me until nov after seeing a number of dental and medical professionals to be diagnosed with trigeminal neuropathic pain in the V2 region. I'm still in a lot of pain with no relief in site. I can't sleep, I can barely eat because all my teeth shifted from the poor dental work and I can't concentrate on anything. This drug ruined my life.

Have had two bad experiences with this drug. Once about a year ago, and another this past Monday. Had four carpules in preparation for a root canal, almost immediately started feeling dizzy, nausea, sweating, etc. (similar to others in this post). After 1.5 hours still not able to move and was taken to ER by ambulance. Tried 3 days later on the root canal, had different drug (no ephedrine) and had similar reaction (but much less severe). At a loss for what to do, still need a root canal!

I am a healthy 58 yr old woman. On May 20 2008, I went to the dentist to have two small fillings done. At the time of the shot I experienced what felt as though I had received an electrical jolt because the shot hit my nerve. This jolt radiated down to my ovaries. I complained to the dentist instantly. Right after the visit I started noticing that my hair was thinning. On June 17, 2008 at my normal hair appointment I commented to the beautician that my hair was thinning. On June 27, 2008 at the second visit to the dentist I experience the same problem from the shot and again told the dentist of problem. By July 18th I noticed some extreme hair loss in two locations on my scalp. I pointed out my hair loss condition to the Dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic on July 18, 2008 he referred me to a hair loss specialist. On September 2, 2008 I meet the specialist she stated that the hair loss was caused by some extreme stress to my system. I told her about the dental work and my reaction to the injection. She said that could have been the catalyst that started this problem. The doctor said if there is some "shock to the system", as many as 70% of the scalp hairs are then shed in large numbers about 1 to 2 months after the "shock". This sudden increase in hair loss, usually described as the hair coming out in handfuls is called acute telogen effluvium. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

10 months ago I was injected with Septocaine for a lower mandibular nerve block for a root canal in my lower jaw, right side. Since then I've had a terrible paresthesia of my tongue, right side, with burning pain, numbness and tingling, stiffness, and terrible taste sensations 24/7. This drug is dangerous and should be banned IMO. I don't know what I'm going to do... there is no treatment for nerve damage. I contacted Dr. Tony Pogrel at UCSF in California who told me that surgery is not indicated for injectional injuries and that if it doesn't clear up by the third month then the chances of recovery are "very poor". Just great. How the heck did this drug EVER get FDA approval????????

Since then, I have had a terrible paresthesia of my tongue with burning pain, numbness, tingling, stiffness, and horrible taste sensations 24/7. It's been 10 months and still no relief. I believe I've been permanently damaged by this drug. My lingual nerve is damaged. Any ideas on what do do will be appreciated.

I have had severe gum pain which is radiating in to my jaw from a septocaine injection I got 2 weeks ago for dental work. It felt as though I had received an electrical jolt or a hot poker when I got the shot. Have been in misery ever since. Still have a large ulcer type sore on my gum where the needle hit. Please, never give this drug to anyone else. It has been a nightmare for me.

I have severe Photophobia and facial disfigurement and constant burning pain, among other symptoms since 12-9-03 from Septocaine.
NEW INFO ON FDA WEBSITE: SEPTODONT CONCEALED KNOWN RISKS OF SEPTOCAINE. SEE SEPTO APPLICATION TO US FDA (NDA 20-971) 1998; 256-259 about paresthesias and nerve block risks--they also concealed info from the FDA by slipping in info into the new labeling the FDA required in March 2006, poste 5-25-06 by FDA. Contact the FDA and an attorney immediately about the fraud of Septodont and the injury you suffered under strict liability and fraud.

I am not sure if this is what I had today at the dentists office but many of the side effects are very similar and I am not sure if i will go back to have any work done.
I went to the dentist to have two small fillings done. After the first shot I experienced a "panic" feeling. heart was racing and feeling light headed. I sat up in the chair and hung my head down when the asst. came in. She asked if I was OK and I told her that I felt very weird and uncomfortable. When he began drilling I could feel the pain still and so he gave me another dose of numbing meds. Well....after about five min my heart was pounding so hard I placed the dentists hand on my chest and he could feel my heart pounding out of my chest. He took my pulse and said it was over 140. Finally the heart racing began to subside but all day I feel like I have been put through the ringer. I couldn't drive myself home, and have been freezing ever since. My right ear is hurting and finally the numbness in my face is wearing off. I think that was the scariest day in my life. Never again!

I am a healthy 43 yr old woman. I rec'd Septocaine to have a simple filling done. I didn't realize he was giving me something different (found out after reaction that this was the 1st time he used it on me). I was left in the room alone w/ magazine to wait, as usual- for the needle to "take effect". Within a minute, my blood pressure soared- heart racing, chills, etc. I was SO dizzy but somehow managed to get up and make it over to the doorway- luckily another dentist was coming up the hall and saw me, by that time - hanging onto/sliding down the doorjam- he helped me back to chair, yelled for help- and what was the scariest was the look on his face- FEAR--My dentist and his assistant came rushing back in- they lowered my head, monitored pulse. I was nausious, felt faint- rushing in ears, etc..I heard 2nd Dr say (first thing said to my Dr): "How much did you give her?"...Within about 5 minutes the rushing stopped; I had to stay there for over 1.5 hours w/ feet raised- couldn't drive myself home. Then, spent next 8+ hours in bed with totally numb face and sinuses & extremely high BP for remainder of day into next morning- I also couldn't take any air thru left nostril at all- Dentist said it was just the numbness, but I could tell the passage was swelled SHUT. I should have probably gine to the hospital. About 10 days later I had an occurance where my bottom lip started trembling out of control and then went numb. I called my GP who told me to go to ER if additional symptoms appeared- they didn't. I think it was residual from the Septocaine reaction; it has been about 6 months since episode, I am afraid to get ANY shots now- still need to have the filling repaired. Does anyone have any advice on follow up?

I went to the dentist to have three old fillings replaced, he administered a shot to each side of my lower jaw, telling me he was injecting it directly into the jaw bone itself instead of the nerve. I also experienced an enormous reaction, heart racing, felt like I was loosing consciousness. The dentist noticed my reaction, had the assistant put a cold towel on my head. But after I recovered, he administered more on the other side! The whole reaction started again, this time more intense. The effect lasted for over an hour, I had to wait in the office before I felt ready to drive home. I will insist on a full explanation of what is being administered next time, and if the dentist objects, I will leave the chair.

I went for a deep cleaning on the left side of my mouth. I was given Lidocaine and Septocaine. Within a few minutes my right hand and leg were twitching and shaking. It progressed to the whole body and then slowly subsided about 15 minutes later. My blood pressure and pulse remained normal, but if was rather frightening.

Was having a filling changed. Dentist used septocaine after lidocaine didn't numb my tooth enough. Within minutes I experienced a severe reaction beginning with tingling in legs, anxiety, difficulty breathing, uncontrollable shaking. An ambulance arrived, oxygen administered, benadryl and epheneprine. They took me to the ER where I spent the rest of the afternoon. Days later my chest is still tight and I'm short of breath.

Had septocaine injection for crown preparation. My heart cramped up and felt very uncomfortable. The cramping sensation has not disappeared for over a month now. It is uncomfortable enough that I need followup medical exam. I am an athlete with no prior heart problems.

I had a horrible experience today. My dentist used Septocaine before 3 fillings. Immediately I had a severe reaction----jittery, freezing, blood pressure up, immediate anxiety, heart racing. It was horrible and it felt like it took a very long time to get back to normal. People should be aware of the risks of this drug.

I went in for a root canal, after 2 shots of xylocaine, I got no numbness, so the endodontist gave me a shot of septocaine and my throat starting closing up. I couldn't swallow, my voice changed, so an ambulance came and took me to the hospital. After Benadryl administered with an i.v. (about an hour) the symptoms subsided. Two days later I'm still exhausted, I have headaches and it still hurts where it was injected.
