Singulair and parents

I am starting to think I would like to be a part of a class action law suit, my daughter had to switch schools because of her mood swings, and vague hallucinations. and vague paranoia. She once ran into a parking lot she was so afraid of needles! Took her to a psychiatrist, sensed she was quick to put her on mood stabilizers and left before the eval. Recently her ped refused to up her dose of singulair and told me about depression. I subsequently upped her flovent and took her off her singulair. I did this after I heard her teacher saqy she kept on leaving the classroom to go to the nurse, and was exhibiting defiant behavior. and saying she was depressed, hearing music that wasn't there, etc. Now that shye has been off of it a week, she is a different child, and hasn't argued with me once. Hasn't cried for 5 days. has not argued w2ith her brother either! I feel I have the child back from 5 years ago when she started taking it! unfrigging believable! I would love to sue, because these episodes have almost ruined my marriage, and caused me to miss many days of work, and feel guilty when I didn't Thank-God I just took her off of it on a whim!

I have a 15-yr old. She's been taking singulair since she was 7. These are a few of the things that I have noticed over the last year but ignored because I too, as many of you have, thought it was because she a teenager.

1. Stomachache .. she complained all the time. Thought it was nerves because it was usually before she went to a training session or game.
2. Restlessness.
3. Headaches.
4. Moodiness.
5. Tired. Fatigue. Weak. Even after she gets hours and hours of sleep. Figured it was because her schedule is whacked. We've had fights over her not going to bed at a certain time.
6. Menstrual cycle changed last fall followed by acne when as before she was perfectly normal with clear skin. Recently put her on BC because of her hormonal change. Blood tests showed she was normal. We tried it anyway to regulate her periods. Took her off of it after she had her period for 3 weeks straight. Probably won't put her back on BC since taking Singulair might be the problem.
7. Tired all the time. Falls asleep in class.
8. Lost interest in her favorite sport which she rocks at. Thought it was because of a 2-month down time due to an injury.
9. Several times, have seen signs of depression but when confronted she says no she's fine. Depression is probably from being unhappy with her appearance. Being on the pill made this worse.
10. Doesn't want to go to school. Whereas before not a big deal. Most kids don't like school, but lately, she talks about how much she hates it. Usually excited to start the new school year, this year not so much, more like dreading it and her attitude hasn't change about it.
11. We argued last week and it was the first time she screamed at me and told me she hated me. She's never done this before. Her thoughts and moods have been horrible but they come in spurts.

After reading everyone's experiences, I am taking her off Singulair. I know it's not an overnight cure and will take some time, but I just want my little girl back. I find it strange that this all occurred within the last year even though she's been taking Singulair since 7. Do you suppose it's in teenagers and puberty?

for about a week I can not read the replays to people's posts. Can it be fixed please? My son is on week four being off singular. There are good days and bad. Hopefully we are heading toward more good. I think what I have noticed is he does better with extra sleep and vitamins.

I am 44 years old and have been taking singulair for about 4 years. 3 months ago I started experiencing crushing chest pain, tingling in my lower limbs, and felt very stressed out. I went to the ER last Thursday and was checked out for angina - the ER doctor told me I was suffering from chronic severe anxiety. I took Ativan for 4 days and felt better, but now the drigs are gone and I again having constant chest pain. In doing some research I found that anxiety can be caused by imbalance in adrenaline, and so started looking online to see if any of the allergy/asthma meds I am taking (adviar, singulair, allegra) can affect adrenaline. That';s when I found this website. Although i find the testimony compelling, I wish more folks would have poted about how their symptoms improved (or didn't) AFTER discontinuing singulair. Also I've noticed many of the stories are about children not adults; many people are taking more than one med for asthma, and most people's symptoms seem to come on right away whereas I have been taking sinulair for years and only recently have anxiety. I will stop singulair tonight and see what happens, but am wondering if anyone has come across further research that correlates singiulair with anxiety? My job life is really peaceful, I am otherwise happy, work can get hectic but that's true of any job, and I am out of ideas as to why suddenly at age 44, when I eat right and exercise - why get anxiety? Thanks for the posts, I'll try to remember to follow up after I am off Singulair for a few weeks.

I've noticed that my 13 year-old son have developed some repetitive rapid eye movements and a compulsive vocalization similar to a brief laugh since using Singular. Has any other reader experienced similar behavioral side effects in themselves or a child they are caring for while using this product?

I am 30 years old and have bad allergies. My doctor gave me a week worth of singulair as a sample. I took it last night. I woke up at 5 am thinking and worrying about the smallest things. I couldn't fall back to sleep. At the same time, my stomach is killing me... I feel like throwing up and have bad diarrhea... I will not take it anymore.

my son has all the symptoms that people have discussed and i would not have found it if he had not hit his head and started to have weird symptoms and after ruling everything out realized that he had been off singular for a month this summer and had started back up. He has had a lot of symptoms but I always thought it was something else. Like everyone said everyone felt that singulair wasn't a problem. I remember when he was little he was having night terrors and the doctor switched it to the day time which made it better but he has always had a hard time sleeping since he started. he has been off it for four days how long does it take before the thoughts come back to normal. If someone could answer it would be great. i am so upset right now as I am sure the other parents are that our children had to go through this.

hi my name is T.im 17 and i have had severe asthma and allergies since i was 2. i was put on the singulair drug when i was 10 i started having nightmares about my percents dying and severe depression and anxiety.my parents thought it was just a phase kids go through.i realized all this didn't start happening until i started taking the drug, so i refused to take it anymore. well now im 7 years later my parents EMT,and pulmonologist.think its a wonderful idea to start taking it again so my parents give it to me and make sure i take it each night,bc my allergies are so bad. ive warned them once,but i guess they will all see what happens

My son has been on singulair for 4 months now to control his asthma. It has done wonders in doing what it was intended to do, however, he's experiencing all of the side effects that the other parents are listing on this site. I threw his singulair in the trash a few nights ago after my son had a complete emotional melt down; which I could easily see he had absolutely no control over. I knew the drugs were changing his personality a bit, but I thought it was just the price we had to pay to keep him out of the hospital. My gut told me never to give him the meds because I had heard about the suicidal tendencies associated with the drug, I just knew I had to watch my son closely (plus he's only 3). I have 3 boys, and the one with asthma is my mild mannered, never gets in trouble, as close to perfect as a child can be. He's been saying "poop" and "pee" uncontrollably along with aggressive behavior toward his brothers and he would cry for no reason at all. His sleep patterns had changed as well, which I now know are due to nightmares - I even found him hiding under his bed a couple of times. I do not know why this drug is approved for children, but after reading the other stories I realize this seems to be the standard instead of the exception. I hope they pull this drug off the market before any more kids get hurt. I feel like I have poisoned my child - I will definitely be spreading the word on this. Anxiously awaiting for this medicine to leave my sons body so I can have my sweet little boy back.

I was prescribed Singulair on a Tuesday & started taking it that evening & that night I began to have horrific dreams. My dreams are usually very vivid & crazy but once I started taking the Singulair they turned really dark & scary. I would wake up freaked out & didn't want to go back to bed. My day time events would roll into my dreams & become so warped and I would wake up confused if what I dream was real or not.

By the Friday after I started taking Singulair I was experiencing anxiety. I felt like I had been drinking coffee all day (I don't usually drink coffee so when I do I get very anxious). By Saturday I was depressed. I didn't want to go out & socialize & I didn't want to be around my husband. I just sat on the couch with my mind spinning out of control with sad thoughts - for example - wondering why husband loved me, whether my parents were healthy & imagining what I would do if they died.

On that Sunday night I was laying down trying to go to bed & my right side was tingling. Since it wasn't the left side I didn't think much of it & tired to ignore it. It took me a long while to fall asleep that night because of worrying about the tingling sensation as well dreading what I was going to dream of. Well, I had the most messed up dream that night that I can't even talk about it without crying. I woke up at 3am & finally came to the realization that it could be the Singulair causing all these problems. I got on my computer & found this website.

Needless to say I stopped using Singulair immediately after reading these testimonials. I met with my doctor that next Tuesday & told her what happened & what I had read. She told me how she had just read the FDA report about 2 weeks before I saw her but didn't think too much of it because she prescribes Singulair about once or twice a week & has never has a patient complain about a mental side effect. I told her to be careful b/c these people may not know what is going on with them & may not be able to put 2 & 2 together b/c who would think an asthma & allergy medication would mess with their mind.

My doctor then prescribed me the Symbicort inhaler and I haven't used my albuterol inhaler once since I started using Symbicort. Mind you I have very mild asthma symptoms.

Just finished reading the posts and I feel like it was written about my 8 year old. I never connected the two issues of anxiety, frustration doing schoolwork, quick to tears and leg pains. I kept telling them they were growing pains. Last night he called me from his father's and said he has suicidal thoughts... not that he wanted to kill himself, just couldn't stop thinking about it... good lord. After months of dealing with him not wanting to go to bed and not feeling safe we have an answer. I told my ex husband to stop the medication today, I will post back after a few weeks to update the progress. I usually never post randomly on the internet, but this site might have just saved my son from emotional turmoil!

Our 11 yr. old daughter was prescribed with Singulair. She started taking it today with much hesitation from her parents. She was on this medication years ago for her mild asthma, but her mood swings/depression were terrible. We have a new ENT now and he promises that the mood swings/depressions are NONSENSE and that these rumors were put to rest years ago. We will be watching her side effects closely, but my question is if Singulair helps so much, what other medication can someone take that does not have these side effects? What is the alternative? She is also going to see a pediatric pulmonologist in August.

I have no idea what most of you are saying. My son has cronic severe asthma and there have been times where he has been close to dying. He is 8 yrs old and been through a lot more than most people have been their entire lives. He has been on singulair for about 6 or 7 yrs now and he hasn't any problems with side effects that any of you are talking about. Before he was put on singulair controlling his asthma was almost impossible. For the parents who have not given ao have just stop giving their children their medication just like that. You should talk to you doctors because I know first hand how dangerous asthma can be. If any parent has ever had to rush their child to the ER and then you child was put into the icu for weeks at a time. You will think you lucky stars there is a medicine like singulair out there. My daughter is a 4 year old child started on Singulair after she was unable to tolerate Zyrtec. For the first few days her allergies seemed better and we were encouraged by her improved allergy symptoms (allergies to poplar trees, grass, and lambs weed manifest as headaches, itching (usually of the extremities), and stomach aches). However, after 2 days her behavior became increasingly erratic. She was emotional, tantrum prone, irritable, anxious, and had difficulty sleeping although she appeared and said she was exhausted/tired. After several weeks on Singulair, we stopped the medication to determine if it was causing the behavioral and sleep problems. The symptoms stopped after discontinuing Singulair and she went back to her usual happy, well behaved self. After being off of it for several weeks we decided to try it again due to her allergies flaring up and wanting to be sure it was the Singulair causing the behavioral problems (because for all of its negatives, the greatest positive about Singulair is that it definitely helps her allergy symptoms). Unfortunately, the irritability, anxiousness, tiredness, tantrums and insomnia returned. We tried giving it to her at different times during the day but the symptoms were still present (although she slept a little better when we gave it to her in the morning). We also tried cutting the dose in half and giving it to her around noon. Decreasing the dose did help with the symptoms to some degree, but they were still bad enough to outweigh the benefits of taking the drug. As a nurse, I love Singulair for the relief it provides allergy sufferers...unfortunately for my daughter, the side effects outweigh the benefits. Given the rates of ADD, ADHD, and other behavioral problems diagnosed in children nowadays, I thought it pertinent to report these symptoms present in my daughter that are solely caused taking this medication.

My 4 year old daughter was taking Singulair before bedtime (for asthma) and developed vicious bad dreams. I took her off the Singulair and the bad dreams disappeared. Through web forums I learned that this side effect has occurred in many children. For the past 2 months her asthma has been completely controlled through the use of a nebulizer and inhaler. I found out the Pediatricians and Nurses and our care facility were not even aware of this side effect. Why is such a mind-altering drug being prescribed to children? And why does a medicine that produces bad dreams require it to be taken before bedtime? She was also taking Zyrtec to control allergies. Her doctor mentioned that it could be taken any time of day, so we gave her the Zyrtec in the am and the Singulair in the pm. One morning during allergy season we forgot to give her the Zyrtec in the morning, so we gave it to her at night. Five hours later she was crying hysterically! It took hours to get her to calm down, and this girl is a very happy, social, well-behaved and well-adjusted child. I stopped both medicines the next day and within one week the bad dreams disappeared. So I would also cautious parents about Zyrtec as well.

My 4 year old Son has had diarrhea from about the last 4 weeks... we have started some tests for Celiac disease but today it only occurred to me today that he has been on Singulair for about that time frame... after all the worry and reading these other storied Im even more convinced that it maybe the Singulair..
Im just hoping that someone might read this sometime today or the next couple of days to tell me if when they come off the singulair how long did it take for the diarrhea to pass. My son had is last tablet 2 nights ago ( so he has only been off it so far for one night. But he still has the diarrhea.. should it have started to come out of his system already.

I have been taking Singulair for one week now due to my exercise induced asthma and allergic asthmatic symptoms. I feel very stressed out and anxious and yell at my parents a lot. Also, I feel kind of paranoid, like I feel as if somebody is watching me at all times. It is scary because I've only been on it a week. Also, my face is red and blotchy and my acne has gone from very little bumps to full blown breakouts all over. I have a barking cough and runny nose now that the doctor prescribed it. When I cough I have a pain on my left side that feels like someone is stabbing me.

Last Tuesday, my son was prescribed Singulair by our pediatrician. He was also prescribed Pulmicort by nebulizer at the same time. Within a couple of days, I was noticing a dramatic change in his personality. He's only 21 months old and normally a very happy, lovable, easygoing little boy. He did a complete 360. By Friday, I had to take a day off from work, as I was too scared to send him to daycare. He took his last Singulair chewable tablet on Friday night. Saturday was his worst day by far. I was in shock by his behavior. He was extremely aggressive, punching and slapping anyone who came near him, he was throwing things, throwing himself into walls, etc, just completely out of control. I contemplated even taking him to the hospital, but then started doing some research online. I had my mother contact a pharmacist whom we trust, who advised for us to stop the Singulair, as if he was having any side effect, it would more than likely be from that. On Sunday, I started to see some changes in him. Yesterday he was getting back to normal. Today, he's that much better. We actually went back to the pediatrician this morning and I'm actually thinking of filing a formal complaint against the dr. as he basically swore up and down that his side effects weren't from the Singulair. Well as a parent, does anyone really think I'd want to put my child thru this?? It may be different if he had behavioral issues prior to this, but this came completely from left field. I am beyond upset right now, pissed off that this drug can be on the market. How many children have to be affected??? This is very scary to me. My son was only on Singulair 4 days, and I feel guilty and angry that he had to go through even that short period of time on the drug. And then to have a pediatrician basically discount me and say that it has nothing to do with singulair is a complete slap in the face! I won't stop speaking out against this drug and hopefully it will inform other parents of these harmful consequences!!!!

I am so angry the more i think about this. This is my child and they are very selfish to mess with children's lives. but no matter how much i contest this drug the FDA will deny it all. Something needs to be done about this ASAP!
To see my child become paranoid over life and death and think hes dying everyday is heartbreaking.

I just wanted to post an update.

I took my son off singulair over a year ago. He was on since he was 2 yrs old and had started with chronic headaches at about 10 yrs old. He also had tantrums(I don't know how else to describe it), was upset and sad and basically disliked himself. He cried all the time. I had always thought it was just him. These symptom had come on slowly over the years.

The first week off this med, it was like he was freaking out and everything was 100x worse. But the headaches almost immediately disappeared.

Other parents were wondering how long it took for his personality to change.or if the kids would remain that way.

It took quite a long time. It was worse for weeks after we took him off. Then it slowly started to improve.

In the last 6-8 months, it's like living with a different child. There's no crying, he's happy, there's no tantrums anymore. Gets a headache maybe once a month instead of daily.

He still has allergies, he still has asthma. But for the first time in years he seems normal. I love that word, normal.

BELIEVE WHAT YOU READ!! TAKE YOUR CHILDREN OFF THIS POISON. 3 yrs ago my 7yr old was on this for 6 months. The "bad thoughts" were terrifying this wonderful boy and changed him drastically and FAST. We took him off this and he immediately improved but the emotional harm this garbage did to him still lingers (anxiety mostly). This is so unfair. Is there nothing we can do to warn other parents except for this? I can't believe I let this happen to my beautiful boy.

My son used a nebulizer 2 to 4 times a day every day from the time he was one and a half years old. When he had just turned three his doctor prescribed Singulair. It was like a wonder drug for us! It took care of his asthma and we didn't have to use the nebulizer any more. He's been on it ever since -- he's 10 now -- he also takes zyrtec and has a rescue inhaler that he uses maybe once a week. About every other year he requires a course of steroids and a week of regular nebulizer use. Also, for the past year he has also required a daily inhaled steroid.
Now, about his mood issues. My son has always been sensitive and intense, moody. The first time I became alarmed was when he was 7, and he told me he wanted to burn his hands on the stove to punish himself for forgetting his homework. I consulted a psychologist who evaluated him and said he was not clinically depressed. Since then he has had periodic "dark" episodes -- especially in the winter. He has said he wants to die. He has had crying jags over things that are upsetting (loss of a pet was the worst) but it seems excessive for him to be saying he "just wants it all to end." He has told me that he is always unhappy and that he hates himself. He has also had problems with moody acting-out with friends. He will brood about hurt feelings until he loses his temper and screams at the friend. I have worked very hard with him on learning to manage his emotions. He hit a friend at school who was teasing him. He accepted his consequences willingly and willingly wrote letters of apology -- he told me he thinks he has anger problems and doesn't want to be this way. And his character is that he is a sweet, caring boy who can't stand to see anyone hurt, but also can't stand to be hurt.
A couple of years ago I asked his allergist if any of the meds he's on are linked with depression. He said no. We have a family history of depression, and I thought my son had gotten the worst combo of all the genes.
Recently, this all got to the point that I decided he needed to see a psychiatrist and quite possibly take medication for depression. Before I made the appointment he had a check-up with his allergist. Going down his list of meds the dr. said, recently Singulair has been linked with depression, have you noticed any moodiness or sadness? My first thought was that I have, but that he's always been like this. My 2nd thought was that he has been on Singulair for most of his life. I said yes and that I'd like to try him off of it.
My son resisted going off of it. He has had enough negative experiences with asthma that he didn't want to risk it, but I insisted. I didn't expect to see any change, but I thought it was important, as I was going to take him to a psychiatrist to consider depression meds, to see how he did off of it for a couple of months.
Less than a week later, he had been in a wonderful mood -- to the point of being silly and giddy all evening -- for 3 days in a row. The kind of mood that I don't see him in often, and when I do I think to myself, "he should be like this more often." One evening he even realized he had forgotten to bring home a homework assignment. I thought, "oh no, here we go, his evening is ruined." But he talked through his options with me, looked a little uncertain, and said, well, okay, I guess I'll have to tell my teacher I don't have it. I'll tell her I'll make it up at lunch if she wants me to. That was it! He didn't mention it again. I didn't say anything about his mood, because I really don't think I can know anything after just a few days -- it could be coincidental. The next day, he said to me that he thinks being off the Singulair is "working." He has now told me that a couple of more times.
I am tentative, but amazed. Even if my son does have a predisposition to be depressed, maybe the Singulair was making everything worse, and things really can improve for him. I am afraid to be to hopeful. At the same time, I feel guilty for giving this medicine to him for 7 years without a second thought.
As an aside, my son has periodically complained of leg pains, that I always told him were growing pains.
I would love any feedback that anyone can give me. So far (these two weeks), his asthma has been controlled with pulmacort, zyrtec and albuterol, so that aspect is okay.

I already had experienced some bad side effects due to singulair with my daughter. She had become moody, emotional, having nightmares and those are just a few to mention. However, my son had no side effects. When I went to my children's pediatrician, she agreed some children do experience some side effects like my daughter was having. But somehow she didn't see it as quite a concern. I vowed then and there to take both my children off it. Then my son continued having his allergies and over the counter zyrtec didn't seem to help him. I went back to the dr. and because I trust her and have known her for many years....she convinced my to put him back on singulair since he had never had any previous side effects. Well, its been maybe 2 months and now I see my son acting strange. He is not himself. The normal activities he used to enjoy don't interest him anymore. For the last few days, he has been wanting to lay down and he says he's sleepy. To me, he is acting like someone who is depressed and he's only 5!!!!!! I am taking him back to the dr. and taking him off this horrible drug! For all you parents out there...I think we should all go with our "motherly" instincts and do what we think is best for our children. We are the ones that know our children on a day to day basis..not the doctor's. So I am kicking myself for not sticking to my original instincts. My daughter improved drastically! Even her teacher noticed a difference. Please if you notice something, take action before the drug does more damage.

I am a 49yr old male who has had asthma all his life, Inhalers made me hyper, steroid inhalers caused bleeding in the nose. My asthma was triggered by cold air(I live in the northeast) dogs, cats, molds mites etc etc. Nine years ago I started Singulair. It changed my life for the better. I no longer even carry an inhaler, very few times will I use a pulmo-aid(sp) for fast acting relief from asthma. Sometimes I have leg cramps and some other side effects(very few). Everyone responds differently to medications.
Singulair has had a positive effect on my life. Parents!!..It's hell to see your children go thru sickness. It was hard on my parents as well. Good luck and find the doctor who will be patient with you to help our kids.

I am 49 yrs old and was prescribed Singulair for allergy and asthma symptoms. I began taking it 2 weeks ago. I find it extremely effective for both asthma and allergy symptoms. Last week I experienced nausea - this has stopped, so it may or may not have been a 24 hr bug. However, I often have a headache and am generally lethargic and starting to feel depressed. After reading the posts here, I realize these symptoms are most likely associated with Singulair so I am planning to discontinue this drug today.

My son is 8 and for the past 3 years has been on Singular for seasonal allergies. He has since been diagnose with asthma and he takes Singular daily. After being on it for 3 weeks he is now getting into trouble in school. The teachers say it was like a light switch being turned on. Completely out of character behavior. My question is this......has anyone experienced hyperactivity behavior on Singular?

Daughter just turned 2, started Singulair on her birthday, so it has only been 9 days. Already it has had such a positive effect on her reactive airway disease (a.k.a. asthma). In January, she had maybe a one-week break from constant runny nose, bad coughing, and 2 a.m. Albuterol treatments. Right after starting Singulair, she got a sniffle--which has always led to bad coughs, etc. But this time she dodged it.

About the same time, she has become more resistant to naptime. She used to just lie down and go to sleep, but lately she stalls and complains--like a typical 2-year-old. Of course, she was probably exhausted from coughing all night! Lately she'd been sleeping 7 pm to 8 am and then napping noon to five!

If it makes her only slightly more intense, I'll take that over worrying whether she's going to suffocate in her sleep. But, having read these comments, I will definitely keep a close eye on her! Pediatrician suggested we try taking her off it for the summer, and back on for the fall/winter.

My son has been on Singulair for about a year and a half...it really seemed to help his allergies...at least at first. This winter has been very dry and I have been having to give him other over the counter allergy medication as the Singulair isn't helping much. He also started losing weight..just not hungry. At first that was ok as he needed to lose a little but then he was getting too thin. He wasn't eating much at school but refused to take a lunch from home. I took him to the doctor just recently to see if he was physical ok since I didn't know what was causing the weight loss. The blood testing showed everything was normal and I just told him he had to start eating better...he has somewhat...but also he finally told me he has been feeling very depressed...seriously depressed and having suicidal thoughts too due to some kids picking on him at school.

I knew there were problems as he complained alot but I had no idea it was this serious. I have taken him out of that school. Right now I don't know if the Singulair could be adding to this depression or if its all just due to the bullies. While he complained a lot he never acted as if it was bothering him that badly or I would have gone to the school about it. Anyway I stopped the Singulair and am going to see if his mood improves or not. After reading some of the scary posts on here regarding the side effects I am wondering if this is a good idea stopping it or not. I am waiting for a call back from his doctor on it. Since its once a day..its kind of hard to wean them off of it...but I could cut it in half ..do that for a few days, then cut it smaller and so forth. His is chewable so I could do that with no problems. He is 13.

It seems most people on here are blaming their "side effects" on the medicine. Could you quite possibly have health issues anyway? what about those people that don't take Singulair and have the exact same symptoms? Is it because they are THINKING about it?
It's one thing to be informed about medication. It's another to go overboard.

I have a grandson who is on singulair since he would walk. He is now 5 years old. He has trouble in school, heat racing, out of control tantrums, biting and hiting in daycare. When he is not taking this medicine he is a different child. Parents are doing what ever the physicians order. Please stop prescribing medicines just for a runny nose, it is not worth the side effects.

My son (now 6) was put on Singulair at 8 months old for asthma and has been o it since. He has never had an appetite and is quite underweight. He complains of stomach pains and headaches daily. At age 4 he was sent to a pediatric GI and neurologist and any brain or gastro issues were ruled out. No one could figure out what was wrong. He has sensory issues and just recently was referred to a psychiatrist for occupational therapy. It was at this appointment that it was suggested that the Singulair is responsible and since he has been on it for the majority of his life we were unable to make the connection. He has been off of it for 2 weeks now and has not complained of headaches or stomach pain at all. His eating habits are slightly better, but not great. Hopefully his appetite will improve over time. I wish we had only known sooner. I feel like such a terrible mother!

My 3 year old son was just prescribed Singulair today. After reading the pamphlet that came with the trial pack, I decided to do more research. All of the side effects that most people have mentioned on this post are listed in the pamphlet. I don't know if I will put my son on this medicine but thought I should mention the importance of actually reading the pamphlets that come with your medicine.

To people like chris555, I believe you are engaging people for sport and say very hurtful things,your day will come and it may just be in the unemployment line.I can only imagine that you must work for Merck or you would not feel so threatened by the good that has come from Parents advocating for their childrens safety.I want you to know, that all who knew our family and our child understand what took place and our reasons for trying to get the proper information where it should have been," on the label". When our child died no one knew about all the added side effects from post marketing reports,which is "a reliable way to track a drugs adverse events".Maybe you should do more research on the legitimate information of causal relationship. Don't be so afraid of a possible drop in revenue for the drug company that I believe you might be an employee of.K. M.

I am 34 years old. I am a pharmacy tech. I have asthma and allergies. I have taken singulair pretty much every day since it came out on the market. I've had asthma since i was about 10 years old. I took theophylline as a kid. Steriods on and off especially during times when my allergies are bad. I still use Advair during the fall and spring. Every drug has a side effect. However breathing is pretty good damn thing. Do I have days when I feel low? Yeah. Do I sometimes have nightmares? Yup. Are "natural" products the answer. Not always. The fish oil that some of the posters are touting can also cause GI problems. Some of the natural products contain herbs and other plant derivatives that can be harmful for a child that suffers from allergies. Not proactively treating asthma can be deadly. Some of the parents are suggesting steriods as the answer - those can cause weight gain, growth suppression and can lead to a worsening of asthma.

Singulair has never made me feel like I've wanted to kill myself. I was more depressed and angry as kid when my asthma did not allow me to partipate in normal childhood things. I was sad and hated life when I couldn't keep up with friends at recces because I was having trouble breathing. You have to outweigh the costs with the benefits. I am more irritable when I have asthma flareup then I am on a normal day. For me, I choose to breathe. And singulair has been helping me for almost a decade.

I'm not saying the medication isn't causing these symptoms but maybe there is an underlying cause to your child's depression.

Any drug has a side effect. But without medical research and the medications that come with them - people would still be dying of simple diseases and we wouldn't have vaccinations. As a society, as a whole, we are a culture that looks to someone else to fix things and then blames the people who try to fix it. We need to stop being the "hot McDonald's coffee'" society.

My 6 1/2 year old daughter has been on Singulair for 3 1/2 to 4 years now and we have had horrible experiences! She was having night terrors, mood swings, angry issues, self control issues, crying over small things, etc. We have been to psychiatrists and psychologists who have diagnosed her with mood disorder, sensory processing disorder and anxiety disorder! Well she has recently been having stomach problems so we have been going to a GI to figure that out. I got online to research and found numerous sites that told how Singulair causes all these things in children. We took my daughter off the meds and within 3 or 4 days seen a tremendous difference! She is a totally different child! It just really frustrates me and saddens me that all these children and their families are going through all this and the doctors do not seem to care. The allergist or psychiatrist didn't believe me. They say no study has ever proven such things. I don't care what they say we as parents know our children and we are the experts when it comes to seeing how they change when on this medicine, we are the ones that live with them and are with them everyday not the doctors! I think they just don't want to lose out on their money from prescribing this drug 90% of children with allergies and asthma!

My 6 year old son was on Singulair for 2 months for viral induced asthma. After about 2 weeks we started noticing that angry tears were pouring out of him about minor problems - his brother didn't want to want to watch the same TV show as him, etc. By 2 weeks later he had started having daily major meltdowns, yelling that he didn't love us and never had, refusing all physical affection and calling himself a loser. This was behavior we had never seen from him before. After a month of this, we were really beginning to think that he either had a mental illness or was having a nervous breakdown. There was a wild look in his eye, and it was obvious that his behavior was confusing him, too, but he was powerless to stop it. My husband had the insight to check the Singulair side-effects the evening of a particularly bad day and we pulled him off immediately. The next day I talked to an acquaintance whose normally laid back and happy 7 year old had started saying he wished he were dead after 3 months on Singulair!

The "edge" my son had to him while on Singulair that made us think of mental illness went away almost immediately after taking him off Singulair. He was still quite irritable and quick to tears for two more weeks, but right now he's been off 3 weeks and I think we have our son back.

I'm so happy that I decided to research this drug. My son, who will be 2 on 1/22/09 was prescribed Singulair today. He has been coughing/wheezing, etc since we moved to a different state, 6 months ago. We have tried all kinds of OTC drugs and nothing would work. We finally brought him to the Dr. today and he says he has allergies (which we kinda knew already). I was happy that the Dr. prescribed something that we could not get OTC..to me, that meant that it was going to be better. I went to pick up the prescription and the pharmacist tried to talk me into a different kind of allergy med for my son. I told her that I wanted to stick with the Singulair, since that is what the Dr. prescribed. She told me, in no uncertain terms, to research this drug! She kept asking, "He's only 2, right?" He's only 2, right?" Her behavior was strange, I thought....it turns out that she was my angel today. I gave my son 1 dosage tonight before bed and he WILL NOT get another. Thank you! On Monday, my first order of business is to go back to the pharmacy and thank my angel....

my granddaughter has been on singulair since she was 5 months old she is now 6yrs old and it does control her asthma, but lately i have noticed a lot of the symptoms posted here. Headache, stomach pains, nightmares, sleepwalking, and the episodes are getting more frequent. When she does this mostly at night it is scary to me especially when she is crying for help and you don't know how to help her. I was searching for something else and was brought to this site, like i was meant to see it and it really scared me. I have already called her doctor and got an appointment for tomorrow. I want her off this medicine as soon as possible.

I would like to know who is NOT experiencing side effects from Singulair.
We are not.
My 7 years old started Singulair three months ago because of allergy issues. She had asthma attack every other week, running nose all the time, she was so miserable, she missed many days of school and she couldn't exercise .Since she started to take SIngulair her allergy improved, no more asthma, no more running nose. SIngulair did not change her way to be. She is doing very good in school (she is above the average..) she does piano, ice skating, she is purple belt Tae Know Doe, speak two languages, she is doing great in everything. Of course she has her "bad moments" but which child does not?
I tried homeopathy, but it did not work, she got worst and worst. I was supposed to give SIngulair to my daughter a year ago, I did not because I was afraid of the side effects. But I wished I had started before because I could have avoid so much steroids since she had asthma most of the time. The doctor convinced me to use this medicine when she said " You think SIngulair has side effects, yes sometime it does, but do you know the danger of using steroids so frequently in a little body?" Then I thought I had to give a try. I am glad I did. Of course I keep watching my daughter behavior closely and reading all the possible side effects of this medication. I forgot to say that beside singulair my daughter is also taking Pulmicort, two puffs once a day.

We have a 5 year old daughter who has been on singulair for about 2 - 3 years. She went on singulair due to coughing asthma. We were soo happy about how well the medication worked, it took about three months, but wow, she finally got over her coughing and was living a more active life. I actually was soo impressed with it, I remember mentioning it and promoting it to some of our daughters friends' parents with children in similar situations....wow do I ever feel awful. Anyway, our daughter came down with a terrible flu a few weeks ago and although she didn't seem feverish, had not one, but 2 night terrors, something that we have been worried about and comforting her with for a couple of years. These 2 threw the 2 of us over the edge this time....we thought we had to get her to a psychologist.....she was terrified, and although we were holding her and comforting her, she was still screaming for us, and there was NOTHING we could do this time....we were doubting ourselves and the environments she was exposed to......what could have happened in her life to make her have such awful dreams??? It was about a 1/2 hour later when my husband asked about the possible side effects of the singulair.....I ran and grabbed the pamphlet, of course this is the first time that I actually sat down and read it, which I should have done some time ago....anyway it was then that I discovered how many issues weren't normal that everyone just kept ensuring us was fine. We had been questioning ADHD for some time, and had actually had it on our list to discuss with her teacher as she was sooo hyper on a regular basis...at the age of 5 she still couldn't sit through a movie at a movie theater, as much as she loved going, she couldn't sit through it....anyway, the only thing that made it difficult to think she could have ADHD was she was such a great learner. She was very eager to learn and loved learning and teaching things. But when giving her instructions or asking her to listen, she'd be so jumpy. She complained of severe leg pains which we chalked up to growing pains...poor thing! Her temper tantrums were out of this world.....she is a child that is soo full of love, but when she was in tantrum mode, she was soo destructive and she would feel soooooo awful for her actions, it was like she couldn't control herself. We just feel awful that we couldn't help her and we didn't realize that what she was experiencing was not so much disobedience, but an imbalance due to the medication. We have since taken her off the singulair, we took her off of it immediately following reading the pamphlet. We found that she was VERY emotional for about 3 days, then she pretty well recovered. She has since become a normally active 5 year old, she is soo good, and has not experienced any night terrors, complained of leg pains, and absolutely no tantrums. Oooh how we love her so much.

My three year old daughter was on in as a baby and it was great for her asthma. I stopped it for a year and now she is 3 and has started it again about two weeks. She sleeps at least 12hrs a night and has a nap. This is someone who slept maybe 8hrs a night and never a nap. Actual the sleep is so much its kinda worrying me. I have a hard time even waking her up. What should I do?

My 4 year old son started taking singulair when he was two. I don't think I picked up on his behavior change right away b/c I thought that he was just entering the "terrible two's". But over time, his allergist added on Nasonex (I know the docs say that it doesn't cause side-effects b/c it's a nasal spray, but I don't buy that...it's a steroid, plain and simple) and more recently zyrtec was added on for his hives. Well, the zyrtec was the straw that broke the camel's back. I mean, he has been a real "handful" since the singulair, but after zyrtec was added 5 months ago - let's just say he was completely out of my control. His meltdowns were so bad that I couldn't go ANYWHERE with him. I either got a sitter or just didn't go anywhere. He became aggressive, defiant, emotional, unhappy. And to top it off he started to have serious "autistic-like" self-stimulatory behaviors (grinding teeth, squinting eyes shut, flapping his hands, punching himself...). At this point my life had become a complete nightmare, and my poor 10 month old son was getting NO attention b/c my 4 year old was so out of control and aggressive. I was afraid for the baby's safety...oh, I could go on all night. This medication has impacted my marriage, my finances, my sanity. Shortly after he started Singulair I had to go on an antidepressant b/c it too so much out of me just to be his mommy. Anyway, a week ago I had him scheduled for a psych evaluation (thought for sure we were going to walk away with either autism or bipolar diagnosis), but two days before I decided to look up the meds he is on and BINGO! All of these posts sound like what we have been going through. I stopped all of his meds that night, cold-turkey, and he has been the most pleasant little boy I have ever met!! My husband and I have fallen in love with him over the past week - we had no idea he was such a sweet child.

Now, while I'm ecstatic that we have found the answer to our nightmare, I also feel SO STINKIN' ANGRY! We lost out on 2 years with our sweet boy, there were times when we raised our voices at him when he just couldn't help himself - he was suffering inside!! When I went to talk to the allergist about my findings this past week, he said, "well, maybe he just had a good day. I'd like to see what happens if he goes off all his meds for a week". Well, there you have it, he has been off for one week and he's an absolute angel. He has an amazing heart and is so caring!!!

Singulair is awful (and so is zyrtec). Please don't give this drug to your children. Research other alternatives (I am giving my son Nordic Naturals Fish Oil, Culturelle probiotics, vitamin c, and am changing his diet - increased magnesium and decreased dairy. I came up with this after hours of research...).

There is a woman on this site whose daughter committed suicide after 3 years on Singulair. This is no joke and the FDA needs to get with it.

i had posted back a few weeks about my daughters situation on singulair well she has been off of the medication now for 3 and 1/2 weeks now and just starting last night she seemed to be a different child she has been on the med for about 14 months she is doing better in school not wanting to fight me on everything. now she is eating great which is scary when your child goes 3 weeks not eating due to being afraid.she was sent to mental health and the doctor said he had never heard of a reaction to singulair and she could go back on it we said it was not going to happen they said it was her being bull headed which we knew different.we were almost to the point where the doctor wanted to admit her to a physic unit . we had her off the med and within 1 week she started eating little by little we just about have her back to where she was.we video taped her having her fits and showed the dr. he just stated she is a handful. we let her see the tapes the other night she started to cry and asked what was wrong with her and we explained nothing baby it was the medicine that was making you do that and now everything is going to be ok .this is the 3rd time she has quit eating in 1 yr and we could not pin point it well now we think we know it was the medicine.they put her on zyrtec we only give it to her as needed not on a daily basis.

My 7-1/2-year-old son was on Singulair for 5 months for asthma and possible allergies. He had been on medication for ADHD for almost a year at that point and had been doing well with it. Singulair made him into a monster. He could not be reasoned with and was constantly overreacting to everything. Just asking him to put on his shoes caused explosive reactions, even to the point of threatening us (his parents) with bodily harm if he did not get his way. We unexpectedly stayed the night out of town and did not give him his Singulair for a few days and started noticing that he was much more rational, calm, and more like his old self. I had heard of the depression risk with Singulair and googled about it this morning and was floored by the amount of children with these type reactions. It is now listed as an allergy for my son and I will never give it to him again.

I posted serveral weeks ago about taking my 5 1/2 yr old off singulair. He has done great as far as the asthma, no problems what so ever. The main reason I took him off was due to his behavior. Very moody, hyper, aggitates easily and so on. Well, after the 2nd week, he was like a NEW child...very calm and behaving in school. Well, he has pretty much regressed back to the behavior before taking him off this med. He has now been off of it for 5 weeks. His teacher asked me last week, if I had to put him back on this med, because he was getting back to his old ways.
He is currently going the an evaluation for ADHD. I have stuggled with the fact that my son may suffer from this and have tried almost everything to avoid medicating him...I was really hoping this was the culprit to his behavior..He had been on singulair for over 4yrs...Is it just going to take longer to see the full effect of NO SINGULAIR???

My 3 year old is on 5mg of singular daily for her constant allergy issues and has had NO trouble at all with it. Her personality has not changed.. she's happy, outgoing, friendly and MUCH better than she was before she started the medication. Prior to starting she was constantly dripping from her nose, she had both ears filled with fluid, had bags under her eyes and was tired and grumpy all the time, due to allergies we could not get under control with other over the counter or prescription meds. Since being on Singulair she's been 100% better than she was. I'm sad to hear that others are having so much trouble with it, but I can say that I am happy my little girl is feeling better.

I found this web site while searching side effect of Singulair. My Son - 7 years old is experiencing same issue - Severe random leg pain in both legs or 1 leg as mentioned by few others. He can not walk when it happened and I have to carry him. The pain disappear in 2-3 days or sometimes it takes 5-6 days.

We did X-Ray and doc could not find anything wrong.

My son is 3 and has been on Singulair since around springtime (I think... I've lost count). Anyway, during this summer we noticed his behavior had just gone straight to hell. At first I was attributing it to the wonderful world of the three year old, but it was just getting ridiculous. He was having countless meltdowns, screaming bloody murder (I mean SCREAMING to the point of going hoarse), hitting, punching, slamming, banging, crying hysterically for ridiculous reasons, yelling out during the night, and showing OCD behaviors. I was fearing that he might have ADHD/OCD until my husband stumbled upon this website. I remember hearing stories about teenagers having horrible side effects from singulair, but didn't think it was affecting my son at 3. As I read the entries on this website I felt like they were talking about my son.

I am taking him off of it to see what happens, but now I'm nervous that his asthma will flare. He's had quite a few asthma episodes since the fall allergy season has started. I suppose he'll need to go for awhile to get everything out of his system to see if the behavior changes, and then I hope to find a new preventative. We have Pulmicort and Xopenex and an inhaler ready!

*UPDATE* Well, it hasn't quite been two weeks since I've taken James off of Singulair and - I am not kidding you - his behavior improved the FIRST day. I want anyone who reads this to know that I am not an "alarmist", I DON'T freak out over everything I read, I do a lot of research (kind of obsessive myself :), so please understand that I am not one to usually write things like this...I mean, I pushed my allergist to give it to him in the first place! There are plenty of kids out there that are fine on Singulair, but some are not. I didn't make the connection to the Singulair since the average three year old is irrational and unpredictable anyway, but I KNEW something wasn't right. It wasn't just tantrums and whatever, his overall personality had done a 180. In the last two weeks my son has returned. He still, of course, has three year old moments, but he is back to the caring, loving, curious, excited, social, happy kid I had last year. One of the worst things we were seeing two weeks ago was bedtime behavior. BAD OCD behaviors - everything in his room had to be PERFECT. The curtains couldn't have a peek of light shining through, there could be nothing on the floor, everything had to be in order. He would obsess about things (creatures) coming into his room, when we would say goodnight and close the door he would scream and cry like someone was stabbing him and was petrified. The FIRST night that we stopped the Singulair he laid his head on his pillow, said goodnight and went to sleep. Please keep an eye out for personality changes in your kids.
*November update* it's been almost two months since we took James off Singulair and we haven't seen ONE BIT of the horrible behavior that we had w/ the Singulair! Normal "three-year-old moments", but no return of the "devil child", no OCD, nighttime freak-outs, violence, or any of it.

So happy to find this site. I never noticed My son never had an eye tick until last month, ironically we started giving him Singular on a daily basis about the same time. My son just turned two and is has also been waking up screaming 3 times every night. Have others reported this same problem...also he is on Pulmicort too, have you read that it is linked to Glaucoma and Cataracts? Do you think that this could be causing the tick? Please HELP! I want a parent's opinion before bringing this up to the doctor...they are so quick to jump to more drugs it makes me sick! Thank you! Any other children with eye "ticks" like really quick consecutive blinks?
