I noticed a post from a female back in June in regard to the hair loss. I am an African American female who has adult onset asthma. I am taking singulair b/c I have episodes every few months where the asthma just wears me out to the point I can't get out of bed and the phlegm is thick and yucky as can be? The singulair I am assuming has made my hair shed beyond disbelief. I took sandwich bags of hair to my stylist. I had sinus surgery back in August and initially I thought it was anesthesia? MY anesthisioligist found this site for me. Has anyone experienced hair loss?

I am soooo happy I found this site. I marked it on my Favorites. I am an active 57 year old woman and have been on singulair since 11/2002. I have also gained over 20 pounds. I can't fit into any clothes and I just can't seem to get the weight off no matter what I do. I would stop taking singulair for several days and noticed I could shed a few pounds. Then I would go back on it because I thought I would have trouble breathing. I only have a mild case of asthma. I did a Find on the word "weight" on this site and I was absolutely amazed at how many hits I got. Singulair is the culprit. Most of my weight gain is in my middle area. My dr. now says I am pre-diabetic and put me on another medication to help lose the weight...NOT working though. I am stopping this medication as of tonight 2/22/2005. What triggered me looking online was the montelukast "sodium" Sodium (salt) is a water retainer...makes perfect sense.

I have been taking Singulair since the late 90's and it was a real blessing, it seemed, as far as my asthma. I have not really wheezed since. However, I have been gaining weight at the rate of 1 pound per month steadily in spite of eating reasonably and exercising 4-5 times a week. Additionally, I am unable to stick it out through an entire aerobic routine and have been working for over a year to get better -- no amount of effort seems to work. So, in spite of not wheezing, I'm still no aerobically fit. I had a pulmonary-cardiac test recently and the Dr decided that I really do have asthma problems even though he could not detect them by observation and my answers to question otherwise.
So, I'm wondering if Singulair is a culprit in my weight gain (seems to be) and inability to shed it. And I'm also wondering if Singulair isn't really helping the asthma but just hiding the symptoms.

Im just adding to this column purely because i am a concerned parent, an am taking these notes i read very seriously as my 4yr old child has been taking 4mg Singulair chewable tablets for around 6mnths. I have observed that for some time now she has slowly lost her concentration span an bad behaviour has increased alot, i would like to hear from anyone who could maybe shed a bit more light on the subject for both my daughter an i, as soon i will possibly be taking her off of this medication to just see if there is any change. Good luck to all parents out there who have a similar concern.
