Singulair and singular

My son is 7 yrs old with allergies and asthma. The Dr. prescribed it and the same day I had talked with a lady which her friends son just committed suicide. They were contributing it to Singular. A quick look up on the internet and I was angry with the pediatrician that the side effect was never discussed with me! After a very reassured conversation I said I would start him with 1/2 dose. I noticed nightmares started right away and I stopped. Asthma got worse decided to star again 3 weeks ago. He started twitching his head, flipping his hair that isn't even long. He was also complaining of stomach aches and not wanting to go to school (very unusual)! He has been off for a week now and is hopefully will not ever have any long term effect! Please follow your instincts and I will let his doctor. know what the side effects were.

I recently stopped using singular as a medication. I experienced an extreme episode of depression. Has anyone else experienced this side effect and to what extreme?

for about a week I can not read the replays to people's posts. Can it be fixed please? My son is on week four being off singular. There are good days and bad. Hopefully we are heading toward more good. I think what I have noticed is he does better with extra sleep and vitamins.

Regardless of whether singular has weight gain listed as an "official" side effect, singular is: Montelukast Sodium (generic name), meaning, sodium is sodium, is Na+! Edema & weight gain WILL occur is individuals sensitive to sodium's effects.

I've noticed that my 13 year-old son have developed some repetitive rapid eye movements and a compulsive vocalization similar to a brief laugh since using Singular. Has any other reader experienced similar behavioral side effects in themselves or a child they are caring for while using this product?

my son has all the symptoms that people have discussed and i would not have found it if he had not hit his head and started to have weird symptoms and after ruling everything out realized that he had been off singular for a month this summer and had started back up. He has had a lot of symptoms but I always thought it was something else. Like everyone said everyone felt that singulair wasn't a problem. I remember when he was little he was having night terrors and the doctor switched it to the day time which made it better but he has always had a hard time sleeping since he started. he has been off it for four days how long does it take before the thoughts come back to normal. If someone could answer it would be great. i am so upset right now as I am sure the other parents are that our children had to go through this.

My 3-year old daughter just took her first and last Singulair today. Within 3 hours: crazy mood swings for no reason, uncontrolled anger, bad dreams during her nap time. I didn't recognize her. She's been on Zyrtec for 2 weeks and showed improvement with her allergies and no side effects, but for some reason I let the doctor talk me into trying Singular today. I just threw the Singular in the garbage. Back to Zyrtec tomorrow.

Our son, who is now 6 was prescribed Singulair at the age of 3 due to asthma/allergies. He was prescribed this by an ENT/Allergist. I thought our sons mood swings were due to the fact that we were expecting another child. He was always so happy/loving and playful. When the baby arrived 2 months later, his behavior worsened. Again, I put it on the new baby sister in the house. His moods/anger/outbursts increased. He hit, threw things etc. I told the doc about this and he said it was due to his enlarged tonsils, and they were then removed. Well needless to say, his behavior did not change because he was still on the Singulair. I mentioned the possible side effects to his pediatrician and she said it was a possibility, but to keep him on it because he needed it. Well, 3 years later, in March of this year I took him to an allergist that I had seen years ago. He immediately took him off the singulair (and all inhalers). His moods seemed to brighten a bit, but not they are worsening again. Is it possible for the Singulair to have long term damaging effects. I understand kids have tantrums, etc. Kids are kids, I get that. But he punches, kicks, screams, cries etc. My husband are at a loss. We don't know what to do. Oh, and he is now on Veramyst as needed (march-june, Aug-Oct.). Has anyone else experienced long term effects due to Singulair?

My eldest son was diagnosed as a Severe Asthmatic at the age of 3. He was put on Flovent 110, 5mg of Zyrtec and Singulair. I cried thinking about my little guy having to be on daily meds for who knows how long. I decided that I would just try the Zyrtec and Flovent 110, it worked wonderfully. When my eldest was 4, my other son, 2, was put on Flovent 44. Never gave them to my youngest because I knew it was not asthma. I ended up lowering my eldest's dose to the 44 and giving him 1 puff a day with the Zyrtec, he is now 7 and is still under control. As for my younger son, he was not asthmatic, he had sleep apnea, had his tonsils and adenoids removed and is now perfect. Just be careful with these doctors, they seem to diagnose these little ones too quickly......most of the time they are not even right. My eldest went through many many doctors before he was finally diagnosed in the ER and sent to peds for 2 weeks. My youngest went through many doctors too, none would do anything, I had so many excuses as to why my son was such a heavy breather and why he had difficulty swallowing and sleeping. Sorry guys, I ran off here, just want you guys to know that all that are diagnosed with asthma do not necessarily have asthma and I believe way too many drugs are prescribed for these little ones.

We put our 3 year old son on Singulair 2 weeks ago for allergies. It seemed to be helping him. He is a very mild mannered kid that has never been an aggressive child and never bites or hits. In the last 4 days his mood has changed, and he has bitten 2 kids at school, hit one kid, bit and hit his grandpa, has been waking up with nightmares and has been very clingy to me (his mom). After reading the side effects of Singulair last night we contacted the pharmacist and told him what has happened and he told us to take him off the Singulair immediately and contact our Pediatrician. I am waiting for a phone call back now. I am saddened that a medication for Allergies can cause such a personality change.

I am so grateful for this website. I found it in early of 2008. At the age of 11 my son went on Singular for mild asthma. He started taking it in November of 2007. Slowly we noticed different complaints he was having. The first was that he couldn't sleep. He was having nightmares. This had never been a problem. He started losing weight. He was complaining about leg pains and headaches every day. By February 2008 he had lost 15 pounds. This is drastic for an average weight 11 year old. They did blood work and everything came back normal. He started bruising very easily and all the other complaints were still there. His mood was very irritable and he is the most quiet gentle child you will ever meet. With new aches, bruising and the weight loss we were getting very frightened. They did a cat scan and more blood work in early April. Still, thankfully, they found nothing. No terrible disease or cancer was found.

When I saw this website and the posts with similar side effects we took him off Singulair. The symptoms went away. He gained back the weight he had lost and each day the symptoms starting going away. Things have been great every since. I can't believe a medicine did all these terrible things to my child.

I am 31 years of age an suffer with severe allergies, I was put on Singular about a month ago but didn’t start getting symptoms until 2 weeks ago I thought it was me but I soon realize it was not , I have severe stomach pains I like to describe as muscle spasms’ very painful, I had swollen eyes always puffy and sore throat. I realized that I didn’t start to have all these issues until I started the singular so I stopped 3 days ago and the spasms have since stopped the sore throat is getting better and the puffy eyes getting much better.. My father in-law told me to look up this site and I am so glad to see that I was not the only one and I wasn’t going crazy thanks everyone for sharing your stories

I discovered my son's side effects from singulair a little over 2 years ago. He had used Singulair for approx 3 years. I did not recognize that he was suffering side effects until his ped increased his dosage to 5mg. At that point, it was loud and clear. I discontinued the Singulair in March 2007. The most significant improvements happen after approx 3 weeks. He was like a different child. Even after the 3 weeks, it seemed like he continued to improve a little every day.

I can tell you from our experience that my son suffered many, many side effects that i did not recognize. He had nightmares, anxiety, fear, frustration, leg pains, stomach pains, dark circles under his eyes, poor appetite, quick to tears and restlessness...just to name a few. On the higher dosage, he began to have a facial tic, dilated pupils and hallucinations.

I am thankful everyday for this website and some higher power that helped me realize what was going on and get him off Singulair. The first week off Singulair, he slept like an angel. No night terrors, no thrashing in his sleep. Week 2, he continued to improve in so many ways. It was nothing short of amazing. Week 3, he began to realize the changes in himself. Fears were a HUGE side effect for him. During week 3, the fears, ALL of them disappeared. He never spoke of them again. It was very strange and truly amazing.

I don't want to tell you to stop the use of Singulair. Only you know your child's health status. I will tell you that stopping Singulair changed our lives and saved my son. My son was on singular about 4 years ago and i thought i noticed irratability, lack of interest and depression, but he was only 4 1/2 at that time and i couldn't tell. It did relieve his allergy symptoms. We took him off at that time. Now, again put him back on it this past year (he is now 9 years old) and i see again a lack of interest, depression, mood swings, irritability and his teacher just told us that as this year has increased he has changed in his school work as well. As of last night we will be taking him off of this medication for good and will continue to manage his seasonal allergies with an emergency inhaler and zyrtec/claritin type meds. He is sluggish on the baseball field and not as alert (he unusually a natural athlete!) and he seems depressed and withdrawn - which is not his personality. I thought maybe because he was getting older he was changing but now I realize it is again the medication. It is okay for a week or two to get through a cold or high allergy week, but long term I will not have him on this any longer and wish that Merck would make the long term effects clearer to the doctors, patients and public in general. We are fortunate that his allergy symptoms are not as severe as other children and we can go lightly on medications.

My 4 year old Son has had diarrhea from about the last 4 weeks... we have started some tests for Celiac disease but today it only occurred to me today that he has been on Singulair for about that time frame... after all the worry and reading these other storied Im even more convinced that it maybe the Singulair..
Im just hoping that someone might read this sometime today or the next couple of days to tell me if when they come off the singulair how long did it take for the diarrhea to pass. My son had is last tablet 2 nights ago ( so he has only been off it so far for one night. But he still has the diarrhea.. should it have started to come out of his system already.

im having cough and then wheezing for a couple of minutes. My doctor thinks its common allergies, but I wasn't having my usual allergy attacks. She put me on Singular and It's been 3wks now and I've been feeling worse than ever.

Tremendous weight gain almost instantly from age 7 to now at age 8-1/2 . When my grandson started this medication we noticed the weight gain. The doctor assured us it had nothing to do with the Singular. We looked on line for information, but could find nothing about weight gain as a side effect. At last it has surfaced that children taking the Singular are also having a weight gain problem. We intend to stop this medication immediately. This is intended for the health and well being of children.

Wow. I am surprised to see how many children are being put on this medication! I am surprised because the label on my bottle says specifically for adults 15 YEARS of age and older... As for my experience with Singulair, I have been taking this medication off and on for about a year now. I was put on it for severe allergies as everything else I tried did not work for me. (Claritin, Allegra, Flonase, Veramyst, etc) The first month or so on Singular I noticed that I would get severe headaches in the afternoon about the same time everyday. I would have to take aspirin just to make it through the every workday. These headaches eventually tapered off even though I will occasionally get a headache. The Singulair definitely helped me with my allergy symptoms and when I would go off, I would usually end up with a cold or sinusitis.

My 3 yr old son has been taking Singular for about 1 1/2 years. He has been diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis. That dx came after an upper endoscopy. From about 10 months until starting Singular he vomited after every meal. Eventually had failure to thrive. He was on the Singular about 1 wk when he stopped vomiting. I am scared to take him off this med because it seems to work for him (with decreasing the vomiting). It doesn't actually decrease the eosinophils in his esophagus but somehow stops him from vomiting.He is a more difficult child but it is all we have really ever known from him. By difficult I mean- overly emotional, has trouble controlling impulses, occasionally mean. Does anyone have insight?

My daughter, who is eleven, now, was on singulair for about 5 years. She has been having a number of problems for a while now, but we never thought about it being the singulair until recently. She was having anxiety problems, tremors, being very argumentative, irritable, angry, depressed, pulling her hair out, (trichotillomania). I started doing research on her meds. (Zyrtec & Singulair) and was shocked to find so many other people were having these same symptoms, including several with the hair pulling. I took her to her allergy doctor and just told him I wanted to change her meds. and that I didn't care if they say these are "not" side effects. It was worth trying to see if things would get better. Well, she has been off the Singulair for about a month and half, and I am happy to report her hair is growing back, and she says she feels happy again. It breaks my heart to know that medicine that we had been giving her for so long was doing this to her. I also have decided a few days ago to take her off the Zyrtec after reading a lot of the same symptoms for it on this website.

In March I started having a lot of facial pain. Thought my allergies were getting worse. I went to an ENT specialist, had the whole workup (which they cannot still figure out my pain). Anyway, wanted me to start on Singular. I took 1 pill before I went to bed this last weekend. I started feeling dizzy and having violent thoughts. Also I had a lot of trouble sleeping. I still felt "weird" the next day. At first I thought this was a fluke, now I am pretty sure it was the Singular. I don't want to chance taking it again. I am a very heavy sleeper and do not have any problems falling asleep. The anxious feeling and strange thoughts were scary. I am not going to take this medication again. I am going to file a report with the FDA for the side effects I experienced. I am convinced they would have gotten much worse like the other people have expressed if I had continued taking it.

I am an anchor and the Medical Specialist for the CBS station in Louisville, KY. I have read these compelling and shocking accounts of the side affects with Singular. I have also been in contact with some pediatricians here in our area. I am doing a special report on this subject, the many accounts of side effects, and whats being done about it. I need your help. Are there any families who would be willing to tell their stories on camera? This is not to embarrass anyone, but to inform and raise important question for the public at large and the medical community. My son is 5 years old and has been on Singulair for 2 years. I am so relieved to find this website after seeing a report about Singular on the local news.
Just the other day I was telling my husband how much it bothers me that our son is not very affectionate. We also have a 3 year old who hugs, laughs and plays like a normal child should. My son, on the other hand, is very rigid if you try to hug him, very serious if you try to joke, and VERY, VERY emotional when I leave him anywhere...as if I'll never return! I don't know how many mornings I've left day care in tears. I always thought to myself "What are we doing wrong?" "Why would he think we weren't coming back?" He is also very moody and argumentative. He reminds me of a very stressed out businessman in his late 50's. Not to mention the leg pains and the nightmares...we have always chalked it all up to "normal" things kids go through. Now that I have read all of the postings on this page I know there is hope. None of us want our children to be unhappy. Thanks for informing me...we are stopping Singulair Immediately!!

This is unfortunate. I posted my symptoms here before on January 11th and approximately 2-3 weeks off the drug I started to feel happy and normal again. I told my doctor, I told the FDA, but apparently the message is not getting through. Yesterday on the commercial for singular they did not even mention depression as a possible side effect of the drug. The complaints are being heard but somewhere a long the line they are being ignored. I don't know what to do, and I am upset that so many suffer at the hands of this drug.

April I started Singulair last Thursday night and felt tired and depressed
29th on Friday but thought it was something going on in my life. On
2009 Saturday, I had severe, throbbing headaches all day but took the
Singulair for the third night. Sunday, I again had throbbing head- aches so looked up this web site and thought, "Aha!" I stopped
the medicine but had dull headaches on Monday and felt tired. On
Tuesday, I woke up and had trouble breathing. I went to the doctor
who ended up putting me on a nebulizer, giving me a shot of
steroids and prescribing an inhaler that I'm to use 3 times a day as
needed until the Singular is out of my system. I was only put on
the Singular in the first place because my doctor thought my
hoarseness might be from an allergy. What a nightmare!
I also suffered from apprehensiveness, and also
sleeplessness, and a fever. Never again!

i am really glad i found this site, and got to really understand what may be my problem. its the SINGULAIR, i really believe. i will share my story so no one has to go through what i have been going through. (i just stopped my medicine a day or two ago, so i will repost and see if i start seeing changes in my behavior) well first off i am 19, and i started taking singulair when i was a senior in high school, so about 2 years ago. i didn't see any noticeable changes for awhile, except for probably a year now, a little more or a little less. for this whole time, i have not been sleeping, i wake up 3-4 times a night, fully awake and can never fall back asleep for hours. its almost like my body tries shutting down, but my brain never does, i have the craziest dreams, most of them are me suffocating or not getting enough air, which are really scary. I have been having really bad anxiety, panic attacks, basically i have been just feeling like i am going to die every second of the day. the feeling of being trapt inside my own body. it seems like every month it just gets worse and worse. i cant focus, i don't go to school, i don't work, and i believe its from the side effects of this medicine. i also always feel so tired, and so weak, i cant even look through a clothes rack without my arm aching. i have been having a hard time breathing, which is odd seeing its supposed to help me breathe, i have been sick at least once a month, through this whole time i have been going to my Dr. at least twice a month or more, telling her my symptoms, i even went in their one day crying i was so scared. and she just kept telling me, its probably all in your head, this, that and the other. she even put me on probably 10 different medicines trying to see which one would help. and of course none of them helped anything. I started thinking, and feeling like i was going crazy, what was wrong with me? i wondered constantly. For a couple months now, i figured i had to take it into my own hands to figure out what was wrong, seeing this Dr. doesn't seem to understand me. I looked up every disease or problem imaginable, and had blood tests done, but every thing came back normal. i didn't understand what was going on, every month i just feel worse and worse, lately i have been telling my mom i just want to die, that i cant keep living my life this way, of course i would not do this for the fact that i couldn't do that to my mom or my little sister, or anyone, but it feels like it would be easier then dealing with everything i have been. along with everything else i was/am feeling, i also feel a lot of hate toward myself, i feel like i am not good at anything, and i feel very ugly, sometime i don't even want to leave my house, because i just feel disgusting. Finally, a couple days ago, my little sister which is 10 and really smart i may add, was watching TV and they happened to have a commercial for SINGULAIR. she told me that everything i have been saying that was wrong with me (she hears me complaining a lot about all my problems to my mom) were all the side effects from SINGULAIR. of course i wanted to know more about this even though i have taken this medicine for awhile without any of these problems, i started researching and realized that all of my symptoms happened to be the side effects from singulair. and then i started reading other peoples stories about it, and about linking it to suicides and everything. i told my mom and i told her i wanted to stop the medicine right away, at least just to see if this is what it was all along. i haven't taken it for 3 days now i believe, and i already see a difference, i actually get tired now instead of staying up reading till 5 in the morning, and i haven't been waking up at all during the night. i am pretty angry that my dr. couldn't figure this out, or at least maybe even think about it. for awhile i thought i was honestly going crazy, i lived in fear for so long that something was extremely wrong with me, that i haven't lived my life the way i should of, or wanted to. i never thought that it was just the EXTREME side effects of this medicine. i am so thankful for my little sister listening to all my complaints and all my anger toward myself, and actually putting it together that it would be my medicine that was supposed to make my asthma better. as i said its only been a couple days and i already feel better, i will repost to tell you if im back to my "normal" self after being off this medicine for a longer period of time. i feel so grateful for my little sister, who would have guessed she would tell me what a Dr. couldn't even think about. i really feel that if i get back to my normal self, i really have her to thank for saving my life. <3

My daughter has taking singular for about 3years. Her doctor put hersingular for allergies when she was five years old she is now 8 years old. There was no problem at firs.It took about 6 months before started seeing her change .She has a lot of hate toward her mother, sister, father.She has mood swings saying she hates us sometimes she wishes we were dead. She is all the time hitting her sister.We took her off of them for about a week and she changed toward everybody she was the best kid you could ask for, but her problems started with her allergies again so we had to put her back on them. We took her back to the doctor and they say there is no other allergy medicine that will work her. She has to be on something or she will run high fevers for weeks plus lots of nose problems and watery eyes. She has complains of a lot headaches more than any other kid would

My seven year old son has been on singular for over four years. He talks a lot about death. He constantly cries about his dead grandmother which he never knew. He is a very smart child and lately I have realized that something bothers him. He is starting to cry often and feels very depressed. This is what he says when he cries: “My brain thinks bad thoughts about you, (mom and dad). Mom, I really love you and daddy, but my brain does not listen to me. My brain tells me bad things about you like to get a knife and stub you to death, or get a gun and kill you. Please mom make my brain squish the bad juice away and live only the good thinking on it. I know that you love me but my brain tells me different.”

My son is begging for help and every day he tries so hard not to have bad thoughts. He tries to hug us and kiss us a lot, but I see on his little eyes that something is wrong. The first time this thing happened I thought maybe a TV show or something made him think so. I am becoming very worried about him and started research on the computer. I don't know what causes his depression, but I know for a fact that he is depressed. He is our only son and gets all the love and attention.

Although he has been on singular for a long time, I have given it to him regularly only the last five months, since his doctor urged me to do so. Before I gave him the singular only when his allergies acted up. When he got better I would completely stop it. I didn't know anything about singular, but I don't like using medicine, and that is the reason I did not use it regularly.

My son has other similar behaviors that are out of his character like no desire to raise, get angry, worry that I would die, behavior problems at school, he thinks he is stupid although he is a straight A student, has nightmares, is scared that he would die, can't concentrate, is scared to be by himself etc.

It brakes my hart to see my baby being depressed. I will stop the singular to see if he will get better. I pray to God he will.

NOW I SEE I AM NOT CRAZY. I JUST GOT OUT OF BED AT 3:30 A.M. - another sleepless night. I thought, I wonder if it is the singular - let's get up and do research. So here I am writing this is the middle of the night. I am a 56 year old female. Have been taking allegra for years, no complaints. History of smoking caused asthma-like symptoms which disappeared about a year ago due to improved lung function. I no longer need the albuterol, inhalers, etc. Two months ago I went to the dr. primarily to talk about depression and anxiety. History of depression and I've been taking welbutrin for the past six months. I decided not to change presc for depression. He suggested that I take singulair and switch to zyrtec.
WELL I CAN SEE THAT THIS IS JUST GREAT! I'm ill with everyone, depressed, have loads of anxiety, have three uncompleted projects in my house and was considering a fourth when I realize - now this is a problem! Wake up! So I find these postings and I am angry that all of this suffering has occurred, esp to children who can't explain that they feel different, etc.
So now I am going cold turkey, going to stop singular and zyrtec immediately. I am retired so I can take benadryl most times if I need to and I look forward to getting some good sleep tomorrow. (Will it leave my system that fast.) God bless you all and your children.
OH I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT MY MIGRAINES - WHICH WERE LONG GONE - HAVE COME BACK WITH A VENGEANCE. The nausea has been slight. OH - I'VE HAD TERRIBLE THOUGHTS WHEN I PICK UP A KNIFE IN THE KITCHEN WHILE PREPARING A MEAL. I INTENTIONALLY SHAKE IT AND WONDER WHY IN THE WORLD I WOULD HAVE SUCH A THOUGHT. I am so upset with dr. and pharm. companies. We need to take ownership of our own conditionsl.

I started taking singular daily for two years now. i was diagnosed with seasonal Asthma and allergies of course. I was always getting colds and such. Singular did helped with those symptoms however now that I accidentally or luckily came across this web site I'm able to answer some of my questions. I feel very anxious, and always need to be physically doing something, then suddenly I have no energy or just feel rotten mainly at the end of the day. Since I also take Zoloft again due to Pre-menopausal symptoms and PDST I kept thinking it was the second condition and never gave a though about Singular. Unfortunately many of my symptoms have been blamed to my menopause and have tried many different alternatives with no help. Being a nurse though, sometimes I tend to rationalize my symptoms and try not to look into things. Never the less, reading all this information it really puts me to think about Singular. something that i have noticed is also my feeling of aggression, and thought irrationality. Ho! my God! I'm so shocked about all of this. I will go of Singular and plan to have a long discussion with my doctor. I will keep you all informed of any changes.

My doctor is a good doctor she is a great listener. Medicine is a hit and miss process for one to undergo. Singular worked great to keep the asthma at bay. Yet, there was a down fall that my doctor did not expect. I was having major mood swings. Such as anger, sadness, depression. Once I added Singular, it didn't come until the second month. I know myself quite well I am funny and very loving. This change came like a thief in the night. I woke up one day not standing the sound of my family voices and felt angry. I was crying and feeling sad to the point I was just waiting for the next mood to come. I do know the difference us women have with moods. This was a different degree of a mood swing. I been threw ups and downs so life was not the problem. I notice this change and immediately told my doctor. But, also I was on my rescue inhaler and a steroid inhaler. I believe it became like a combine cocktail of drugs. This combination cause me to feel this way. I got off the steroid that I was taking and Singular. I notice in just two days I am more patient, happy and so is my family. My doctor has me on new meds now and hopefully this well work. I have had two sons on Singular. My three-year old had drastic behavioral changes about a month after starting to take Singulair. He suddenly had severe separation anxiety, was crying and whining all the time, did not want to be alone at all. Normally he is very happy go lucky and we did not see his bright cheerful smile for weeks. I took him to his pediatric doctor and described the behavior and she immediately said to take him off the Singulair. After two weeks, he was back to his normal, happy self. My older son is 5 and has been on Singulair for over a year. I consulted with his allergist right away after my 3-year-old was having trouble. I wanted to take him off the Singulair and he advised against it, because my 5 year old has more serious asthma and allergies. When he first started he had nightmares, and when I mentioned it to a friend whose son is also on Singulair, she said, oh, give it to him in the morning instead of night and that will help with the nightmares. That did help. Yesterday, I decided to take him off of it. It seems like he's always coughing and congested, he complains often of growing pains in his legs that will make him scream and cry and beg for medicine to make the pain go away. He becomes emotionally uncontrollable - i.e. he will have crying jags and when I try to console him or ask him to stop crying he'll say he can't help it and he'll say, "You don't understand, I can't control it." He has also complained of headaches and I wondered how would a 5-year-old even know what a headache is? I feel very naive and am thankful for sites like this because you will not always get this information from your health care providers and also the drug companies. If you are like me, and you've ended up in the emergency room and also calling 911 because your child is having and asthma attack, you be be so afraid you'll give your kids whatever the doctor prescribes and you'll look at it as the lesser of two evils - do you want to be in the emergency room or can you live with the side effects. It has taken me a while to get smart about this. There has to be a better solution out there.

I have been on Singular for 2 months. I have noticed dizziness and almost passing out. I thought it was my other herbal supplements, but now I am still having the feelings and I will discontinue the Singular! Today I have a headache and just don't feel right in my head, almost like double vision feeling. I'm glad I found this website. I went on Singular for dog allergies, but it is not worth feeling this way!

I wrote about a year ago. My 17 year old daughter was suicidal and horribly depressed during the year she was on Singular. Her asthma doctor had seen this is girls her age and took her off it immediately. Turns out it was not even helping the asthma as she improved on only Asthmanex.
She got better after being off Singluar 2 weeks but was never the happy, outgoing girl she had been before she started. She is now suffering again form an episode of major depression.

Are the effects of this drug permanent? She got so much better after she stopped it, it was like I had her back, almost. She never made ti back the whole way.
I filed a post-marketing MedWatch adverse drug report form one year ago. It is the only way we can prove what is going on. I used to be a certified clinical research co-oridinator. The FDA can't know unless we tell them. Please let them know what a dangerous drug this can be.

My son is 8 and for the past 3 years has been on Singular for seasonal allergies. He has since been diagnose with asthma and he takes Singular daily. After being on it for 3 weeks he is now getting into trouble in school. The teachers say it was like a light switch being turned on. Completely out of character behavior. My question is this......has anyone experienced hyperactivity behavior on Singular?

I am 39 years old. I was prescribed Singulair last month. I have bad allergies and have started to develop some asthma type symptoms. My doctor decided to try me on Singular before giving me an inhaler. I took the Singulair for 2 week and had to quit. After the first day, I developed a headache that would not go away, nausea and very vivid bad dreams. This lasted the entire two weeks that I took Singulair. I thought that after maybe a week, some of the side effects would go away but they didn't. So, I quite taking the stuff. I will never take it again. I am back to my Zyrtec for now.

My son (now 6) was put on Singulair at 8 months old for asthma and has been o it since. He has never had an appetite and is quite underweight. He complains of stomach pains and headaches daily. At age 4 he was sent to a pediatric GI and neurologist and any brain or gastro issues were ruled out. No one could figure out what was wrong. He has sensory issues and just recently was referred to a psychiatrist for occupational therapy. It was at this appointment that it was suggested that the Singulair is responsible and since he has been on it for the majority of his life we were unable to make the connection. He has been off of it for 2 weeks now and has not complained of headaches or stomach pain at all. His eating habits are slightly better, but not great. Hopefully his appetite will improve over time. I wish we had only known sooner. I feel like such a terrible mother!

I'm 43. Started taking Singular about 10 years ago. I think that's when it came out. Over time, I've developed panic attacks, mild depression, mood swings, panic disorder, muscle twitches and cramps, and agoraphobia. I finally slowly took myself off of all medications after doing The Allergy and Asthma Cure - a great book and it helps tremendously!

After being off of the Singular, my symptoms listed started going away. i stay have agoraphobia because that's a learned issue from fear of having a panic attack. All doctors and pharmacists say there's no link. I know lots of adults who have gone through this only to get put on Xanax and antidepressants. Try to go as natural as you can. All of these meds have fried my body. Diet is huge to! I've substituted goat's milk for cow, Try it!

the pediatrician prescribed singular for my dd when she was 12yrs old for her asthma. she described it as being safe. that same year dd started having problems in school and seemed depressed. I talked to the doctor about it thinking maybe it had something to do with her adhd medication. the doctor thought maybe it was just normal teen behavior and dd trying to adjust. eventually we took dd to a therapist and things seemed to get a little better. then dd started complaining about stomach pains, she talked about strange dreams at night and would wake up in the middle of the night. Then the tantrums started, wild out of control tantrums. she would scream, throw things, destroy things, she talked about wanting to die, how she hated her life. again I went back to the doctor her adhd medication was adjusted and I also got her back into therapy. therapy was helpful but we continued to deal with the wild tantrums. we kept trying to seek help and answers but to no avail. we were beginning to think dd was suffering from a mental illness. the doctor told us to keep an eye on it and the next step would be maybe putting her on more medication. In the meantime dd became anxious, she had an anxiety attack at school, she would get in arguments with her friends and become very irrational, she continued to be angry at home, she destroyed things in her room and punched a hole in the wall. When I would look in her eye she had the look of a wild animal. my doctor began to think it was merely teen rebellion and we needed to get tougher with her. Never did it ever cross my mind that it could be something with singular till I heard about the study on the news then it all clicked. before singular my dd was an above average student who was liked by teachers and students alike. teachers talked about how well behaved she was and she was a leader. she was very active in various activities at school. Now she has become nervous and suffers from anxiety attacks, she has out of control tantrums and anger. her friends frequently avoid her or her calls because she has become so moody and angry. she frequently complains that her stomach hurts and feels like she's going to be sick. she screams and talks about wanting to die and that we don't love her. till today I had considered this drug to be safe and very useful in controlling her asthma but after doing more research i'm beginning to wonder if it's worth the risk.

So the FDA spent 9 months studying clinical trial data that was not designed to monitor psychiatric events. That sounds productive.

That's like saying you're going to look for an orange in an apple orchard and spend 9 months doing it.

To clear up any misunderstanding about the FDA Singulair investigation.
FROM THE FDA STATEMENT ABOUT THE SINGULAIR INVESTIGATION

"FDA has not yet reached a definitive conclusion regarding the clinical trial data on mood and behavioral adverse events associated with montelukast, zafirlukast, and zileuton."

"although (the clinical trial) data do not suggest that montelukast, zafirlukast, or zileuton are associated with suicide or suicidal behavior, these clinical trials were not designed specifically to examine neuropsychiatric events. As a result, some events may not have been reported."

The FDA is continuing to investigate a link between Singulair and suicide .
They stated that they have not "closed the book on suicidality". Any news reports stating there is no conclusive link are incorrect.

My 2 year old Grandson was put on Singular and Nasonex after having tubes placed in ears and adenoids removed. His nose continued to run all the time he would not nap and wake up all thru the night and I would have to plead with him to eat or drink anything, his behavior was out of control and he was irate at times , not the same little boy at all. I got online and did some research and I stopped the medications.. It has been over a week and he is his sweet little self again, and his nose is not running at all , he eats and naps and sleeps all night. I would not recommend this medication for anyone, especially a child. Concerned Grandma In Indy

My 8 year old daughter was on singular for 3 years and she was very active and a little hyper, after taking her off of singular now for almost 8 months she has incurred a tic, I have brought her to a neurologist and he says no its not from the medication or a side effect from it but I really think it is, she has a few vocal and 1 involuntary movement, this is so terrible that these medications that you think help your children are really hurting them, my daughter was on asthma medications since she was 3, and then the neurologist suggests that I put her on an anxiety medication I told him NO, you are not going to make my child stoned I will find other ways to help her with this problem because what I have read is there is no medication that clears tics, they go away on there own and I believe this I will not drug my daughter she has been through enough with all this medication that has caused this. So I do believe SINGULAR and a few others are responsible for our childrens behaviors.

I am a pediatrician and my and I take care of my one year granddaughter is with allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma. In her past history other than her usual problems she developed an episode of ketotic hypoglycemia after a viral syndrome.
I started her in Singular as she was having nocturnal episodes of cough in spite of having Pulmicort twice daily. As soon as she was started in Singulair she developed restless episodes of irritability. She never behaved that way before. She is now sleeping well all night after she had discontinued Singular.

It seems that this subject has been extensively documented, but just wanted to confirm that I believe this drug is very dangerous. We JUST put our 5-1/2 year old daughter on it one week ago. She has NEVER had any issues sleeping, is most often in a great mood, and has been protected beyond belief by my wife from negative imagery, TV, etc. The last week was unbelievable. Night terrors every night, with the most vivid and negative imagery when asked to describe the content of her dreams. Things that I would have thought she must have gotten from watching a Stephen King movie. Given the lack of fitful sleep could have been a contribute, but her mood all week was very downtrodden. Hard to say a 5 year old can be depressed, but I would have to say she was, very sullen, moody, despondent to affection.

I can positively say this was a blind test. We didn't really read the label on the medicine until yesterday, so we were not looking into things that weren't there, nor were we focusing in on the sleep issues. We took her off yesterday, and hopefully I will be able to report that the night terrors that I am 95% positive must have come from this drug will abate.

I hear because the chewable format is new, this drug is really being pushed. I hope this drug is pulled instead of being promoted. Buyer beware, especially administering to kids. I can't imagine if our daughter had been a little younger and not able to express herself to the level she can at 5.

My 3 year old is on 5mg of singular daily for her constant allergy issues and has had NO trouble at all with it. Her personality has not changed.. she's happy, outgoing, friendly and MUCH better than she was before she started the medication. Prior to starting she was constantly dripping from her nose, she had both ears filled with fluid, had bags under her eyes and was tired and grumpy all the time, due to allergies we could not get under control with other over the counter or prescription meds. Since being on Singulair she's been 100% better than she was. I'm sad to hear that others are having so much trouble with it, but I can say that I am happy my little girl is feeling better.

October 22, 1998 I had resp. failure (with intubation). My new pulmonary doctor put me on Singulair 10 mg once a day, a few weeks after. Within time, I started to have numbing and tingling in my face, arms, and legs. March of 1999 the symptoms worsened and started causing pressure in my face, arms, and legs, and anxiety started to kick in. I was told I had neuropathy and to take mobic. Symptoms getting worse, and went to a rheumatologist in June 1999, and he was suspect of singulair. The doctor thought that what I was experiencing was due to the singulair. He (the rheumatologist) discussed this with the pulmonary doctor and the pulmonary doctor did not believe this to be the case. Not forgetting, in March of 1999, I had a ct of the sinus area, and low and behold 1/3 of the cavity was and probably still is full of polyps.

As time went on, symptoms getting worse, and not one bloody doctor could figure out why I was feeling this way. In addition, at times, I was put on steroids for my asthma (not including my inhalers).

Two years ago, my body went into shock, leaving my left side very different than my right side. Affecting: my head, my face, my eye, my ear, my esophogus, my lungs, my arm, my leg.

I have been depressed and anxious not knowing what the heck was going on with me.

Recently ruled out thyroid, and lupus, and possibly ms.

Last weekend, I reviewed the letter from the rheumatologist (dated 1999) and the ct report from March 1999 (regarding the sinus/ polyps) and made copies to present to a pulmonary doctor that I have recently been seeing.

This past Monday the 10th, I had my appt with him. He knew of my situation from the last few visits (in addition, I had met him this past March for a pulmonary rehab program, and thought he seemed to be knowledgeable and compassionate). While waiting for him to enter the exam room, he had read those reports before entering.

The doctor looked at my hands (red as a beet and swollen) and said "You have Churg-Strauss Syndrome, and get off the singulair."

I had done my homework from a few weeks ago, where I looked up untreated polyps.
Untreated polyps, can turn into vasculitis. There are many types of vasculitis, to include Churg-Strauss Syndrome.

I then cross ref CSS and singulair, and low and behold, BINGO!

I have been suffering for ten years, physically and emotionally because of this drug!

There is also recent updates from the fda (fda.gov) regarding singulair, of which most recently includes anxiety and depression.

I suggest before taking singulair, be aware of the side effects. As soon as a side effect comes up, contact your doctor. Also, be aware of existing conditions (like me, sinus problems and asthma) for this could lead to churg-strauss syndrome.

This info is indicated on the actual disclosure (the paper insert that indicates studies, side effects, etc...) not the handout that is given with the drug.

By the way, I am now working with a new rheumatologist in Los Angeles (Cedar-Sinai affiliated) and a new neurologist.

My daughter is 7 and was just put on Singular as a preventive medication for croup which she gets when she has an infection. She is not on a daily inhaler nor does she have asthma attacks at school. I asked the doctor for an alternative to the pulmicort breathing treatments b/c the prolonged use of this caused her to have dental issues (8 cavities) and he gave her singular. I am concerned of the side effects in the reviews of this medication but I need some relief for my child. She has been on the medication only 1 day is frequent urination a side effect and can it come on that quick? If there is another medication that doesn't have the side effects apparently singular has please let me know.

My son is almost 5 now and has severe food and inhalant allergies, along with sever asthma. When he was 3 he was hospitalized for 4 days because of his asthma. I have been warned that only 1% of asthmatics will ever be hospitalized, so I've made sure he stays on all his meds. He has been on Singular ever since he was 15 months old. At first it was a God send. Everyday was a constant challenged, fussy, icthy red eyes, constant flow of mucous and wheezing. I would have to pin him down 6 times a day with the inhaler, but when Singular came "poof" it was like magic. He was on Singular when he was hospitalized and is now on 3 meds; Zrytec, Singular and Q-var all given to him everyday. Lately we have had some major issues come up for him. I think I have the next J. D. living with me. NO FOR REAL. My next step is a shrink. You might think I'm mean for saying it, but I don't know how else to describe it. When I was driving he asked for some gum, because I wouldn't let him pick out his own piece, he got out of his car seat and started hitting me over and over again, pulled my hair and tried to "break my arm" as he put it. I had to pull over and I couldn't get him to calm down he kept slapping me in the face and kicking me not only was I embarrassed, but it hurt, I was crying. I have finally come here trying to see if other children, who are on Singular, have had similar episodes. He is a very good boy most of the time and aggression is a hit and miss. I don't know what to do.

Wow! I can't believe what I'm reading. My son just turned 5 years old. He was put on Singular when he was 2 years old because he constantly had sinus infections. For the past year, I've just used it off and on when he starts to get stuffy. He is very well behaved, but has has trouble with nightmares. He just told me a few weeks ago that he knows that monsters aren't real, but he can't get them out of his head. I know people think I'm a softie because I let him fall asleep with me every night (his dad puts him in his own bed after he's fast asleep), but he is petrified to go to sleep by himself. I didn't understand it, but I could see the terror in his eyes. It all makes sense, now. Sometimes he plays so well by himself in his room, but other times he doesn't even want to go to the bathroom by himself because he's scared. I'm betting he was taking Singulair during the times he was scared to go into the bathroom himself. Unbelievable. We have to get the word out about this drug. I feel like such a horrible parent for not searching for these side effects sooner.

I came to the website to see if Singular suppressed the immune system because he's been getting horrible cold sores in the fall for the past 3 years. It seems to correspond with the time he started taking Singular. I know that Singulair can't cause cold sores, but if his immune system was suppressed, his body can't fight off the virus. 80% of us have the virus that causes cold sores, but most of our immune systems are able to keep the virus in check. During a cold or other illness which compromises the immune system, cold sores can pop out.

In any case, I've already flushed the remainder of his pills. He's also complained of stomach and leg aches. In fact, the docs made him give-up milk thinking he was lactose intolerant but it didn't help the stomach aches. Hopefully giving-up Singulair will help his tummy aches, too.
