I was prescribed Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim DS for a Sinus Infection. I am prone to having them, so I figured they would just prescribe me the usual Amoxicillin. But instead I got this, and I wish I didn't. I just finished my prescription, and I am praying for sleep. I have gotten a total of 24 hours of sleep in 10 days!!!!! Mind you I am a full time Nursing Student and a single mom to a 2 year old!!! Sleep is extremely important to me!!!! Minus the lack of sleep, when I actually do sleep, I have been having some of the most "weird" dreams!!! Dreams of things that I can't even begin to find words to describe. Vomiting at least twice a day, dehydration, a complete lack of appetite, the shakes; which resemble someone with low blood sugar, dizziness, puffy face, and diarrhea. I seriously have no idea what the doctor was thinking that was filling in for my regular PCP, but I am filing a complaint at their office first thing Monday morning regarding the prescription. Every time I called into the office regarding the side effects, they told me that it was just normal side effects, and to continue to take my medication and to try and take it with "dry toast" to help keep it down. Dry toast isn't going to help when you can't even keep down your own salivia!!!!!

I went to doctor because I thought I had an ear infection. He looked at me and said I have a little fluid in my ear. He prescribed Amox. Didn't work. I then went back and he prescribed Sulfameth. I began taking two pills a day for a probable sinus infection (never had one before Im 41 yrs. old). I immediately felt like my world was crashing down on me. Im am dizzy all day, my glands are swollen and have dry mouth. I cant sleep and have nausea which is probably why Im depressed. I however continue to take this medication hoping that it will eventually work. Im on day five and feel terrible. Today I go for a CT scan of my nasal area. Pray, Ive never been so miserable in my life!

i was given this for a sinus infection. the first day i had red bumps all over my legs. i have really bad allergies so i passed it off. the second day i had the bumps, felt a little disoriented and dizzy, and i felt pain in all my joints. by the third day i had a fever of 104 degrees, all the other symptoms and all i wanted to do was sleep. my fiance gave me Advil and it brought my fever down to 102 but then went back up to 103. he took the prescription away from me. he got worried and took me to urgent care where after waiting 5 hours to see someone they said i had the flu-drink lots and sleep. oh and maybe its a reaction to the medication. my temperature went down to normal day after i stopped taking it, my joints and swelling are better, i still have the bumps on my legs but i have another appointment with my regular doctor later this morning so i'll see what he says. my brother called earlier today and as soon as i told him the name of the medication he said "oh, so you have spots all over?" so i guess it's not just me?

My son was given this medication for MRSA staph infection, in addition to Rifampin 300mg, and other medication he has had before. This is his 4th outbreak so they were trying to get aggressive with this treatment.

Yesterday, Day 4 (although he hadn't been taking his medication faithfully as he should have been) he developed a rash on the side of his tummy. Then today, it started spreading sporadically on his back, his knees are red & swollen, and his hands feel swollen to him as well. Since both these medications are new to us, and it's a Sunday, I'm having him stop both the SULFAM / TRIMETH, and the Rifmpkin until I can speak with a doctor tomorrow.

Looks like other people have had similar, and worse side effects such as his.

I was prescribed Sulfamethoxazole-TMP tablets for a severe UTI that I developed. I was given 10 tablets total--and instructed to take two per day. Within an hour of taking the first tablet, my UTI felt much better, however, the rest of me felt horrible! I got nausea, dizziness, extreme confusion and depression, and stiffness and pain in my neck and shoulders. I continued the medication anyway, b/c I never had sulfur or ANY medicinal allergies. I had difficulty sleeping the next few nights, I would wake up in the middle of the night for no reason. The soreness of my neck and shoulders then extended to my butt and thighs. I can't describe how uncomfortable this was. I was sitting at work literally writhing in pain from what I felt in my legs. (and I blamed it on my poor desk chair!!) This happened on day three of five. Also, while at work I had an "episode" if you will, where I became extremely confused and disoriented, and nearly had a panic attack. It felt like the world was crashing down on me!! It only lasted for 15 minutes or so, but I will not forget the way I felt. All the while, my UTI symptoms were getting better and better. I was completely unable to have a bowel movement...sorry for this information...but it will start to make you worry if you can't poo for 5 days!! Day four of five is what I like to call "The Enlightenment". I was getting in the shower, still dizzy as hell, and noticed that I was very itchy. I looked at my lower back and I was covered in red, itchy bumps. I was say they looked like small mosquito bites, all in a cluster of about 8 on either side of my lower back. I realized then and there that this medication really was ravaging my body like I had feared. I found this site and others online which confirmed that I wasn't crazy...just poisoned. Later that day I was resting on my couch and looked in the mirror and saw that my entire face was covered in a red rash. (and I got a horrific headache) The worst part is you don't really look outwardly sick or anything...you just feel terrible. Everyone I told was very nonchalant about it..."Oh just take some Benadryl". I've lost my faith in the FDA. I stopped this medication one pill shy of my last dose. I am terrified of the possible lasting effects and will never take this drug again!! PLEASE!! NEVER TAKE THIS MEDICATION!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!
