This medication should be taken off the market. I went to my Dr. and teh Emergency room for them to tell me I was not having a reaction. My heart was racing to over 110 while my normal resting heart beat is 66. I was trembling inside my body and hands. The worst was the tightness in my chest that felt like anxiety. I could barely breath. I have never had anxioty so they wanted to give me something for that. But what about the other symptons, swollen tough, bruising and sleeplessness. None of it was worth it. I also began seeing cats in my house. I dont have cats. Scary, painful medication and I am extremely worried that DR.and the Medical companies are not fully aware of how dramatic and common these side effects are. Thier site doesnt list out many of these like trembling, high heart rate and intense anxiety, which is very concerning. If you are feeling any of the symptoms here and they are bothering you demand that your Dr. listen and perscribe a new medication if needed. Good Luck and thanks to all of you who shared. I thought I was going crazy.

I started taking Sulfameth for a urinary tract infection the last week in Sept. '06 and at about 10 days my health just crashed in and out of various symptoms. I started feeling like I was near a "blackout" a lot of the time, brain pains around my head, my head and face feel hot internally but not to the touch, my ears got plugged up sensation, my muscles would quiver, teeth chatter like I was really cold, I had some heart burn, nausea, diahrea, and loss of appetite, sleeplessness, I suffered from thoughts of suicide and paranoia during these episodes which seem to last 8 hours. My team of Dr.s have found nothing so far.

I was given sulfameth/trimetoprim for and ear infection and the first dose made my tongue feel like it was swelling up,then I noticed my hands and feet were very cold, and I felt light headed, dizzy and my throat felt like it was swelling up or like i had a lump in my throat .By the time i got to my fifth pill i could not sleep,i could feel my heart beating in my back and when i took a sip of water it felt just like my thorat had a massive lumpin it. At that point i called my doctor and they said that i definitly had an allergic reation to the medicine. Now the doctor is going to switch my medicine but i am still feeling bad and am afraid to trust them with my health. These same doctors used to treat my 19 year old son for contipation, anxiety and as they put it "girlfriend trouble" which was actually insomnia but he ended up being diagnosed with stage four colon cancer and passed away fourteen months later.stay away from this medicine and always ask questions and keep a log of your doctors and treatments.

I was prescribed Trimethoprim for a UTI on Monday. It is now Friday and I have had trouble sleeping, severe mood swings to the point of depression.
The UTI seems better, but I feel miserable and very grumpy.
I have two days supply left, but am not sure if I will complete the course. I have never had any side effects from antibiotics before. I will never take this awful drug again!
Just so glad to have found out what is causing my depressed state and sleeplessness, as it is in marked contrast to how I usually feel.

My pharmacist substituted this medicine for Bactrim DS that my doctor prescribed for my bladder infection. Since taking it I have trouble sleeping, anxiety, constipation, feel jittery, chills, nausea, loss of apetite, and cold sweats. I am not taking one more of these pills.

I was prescribed this medication for an ear infection. For the first five days, I had severe headaches, dry mouth, and trouble sleeping. On the sixth day, I developed a fever of 101 and had chills bad enough to cause my teeth to chatter. I was also extremely tired and my whole body ached. I though I was coming down with the flu. I went to bed that night, but continued to suffer from chills and was unable to rest comfortably. I awoke at 4am on the seventh day and noticed I had hives all over my face and neck. By 9am, I had red blotches on my chest, stomach, back, and arms. I called the doctor and was told it was probably an allergic reaction and I should come in for a check-up. After seeing the doctor, he said this medication often has a "delayed allergic reaction" that usually shows up around 7 days after beginning the dosage. He told me stop taking the meds and that the rash would probably get worse before it gets better. That's true. It is now day 8 (late) and I have red blotches everywhere on my body and they itch a lot. I will make sure I remember to never take this medicine again. It didn't help with the ear infection either, but nothing has so far. This was the 4th different antibiotic tried.

I was prescribed this drug for a UTI. Today is my last day on it and I am so grateful. Not only have I been depressed and had trouble sleeping, I have been peeing every five minutes. It's maddening. In the future I will choose the 7 day drug and not this stuff.

This drug is awful, I feel dizzy, lightheaded, shaky, tired, nausiated, have blurry vision, and trouble swallowing, hot flashes and trouble sleeping. I am stopping it today. It seems to work for my UTI, but the side effects are unbearable. I also have bruises all over my legs and I did not bump into anything!

What most of you are calling side effects...are my symptons before taking the drug. ( Neck aches; nausea; severe headaches.)
I have a sinus infection to which severe headaches and nausea were causing me to miss work. I have taken 5 doses now, and although I am dehydrated, this is the best I have felt in 7 days, and my condition was not improving without the drug.
I do believe either the Sulfameth or Ultracet (for pain) caused the emotional sensitivity, but your body wasn't created to deal with the barage of infection, pain, drugs, and sleeplessness.

Sulfameth cleared up a serious infection in my finger that I was in the hospital for on IV antibiotics and morphine for four days. However the drug did have upleasant side effecs, bad headache, trouble sleeping, vivid nightmares, depression and anxiety. I was in a very black mood, felt like the world was ending, felt claustrophobic, like I needed to escape somewhere. I took a natural product, 5HTP, and that solved the sleeping problem and also helped with my mental state. Also added L-Tyrosine Plus from twinlabs which helped with depression.

Took meds 3 weeks ago. Seemed to clear up the UTI, but it has returned. Dr. prescribed Sulfameth/Trimethoprim 800/160 Tabs. Guess I was too ill the 1st time, but did notice sleeplessness. This time with the 1st pill and noticed my face got red and I developed a severe headache about 6 hrs. after taking it. Could not sleep. Lingering headache, am drinking lots of water/juice. Took 2nd pill this AM and noticed my face turned red and am wondering if this is the same ingredient that is in wines with SULFITHS because this is the same reaction I get if I have a glass of wine. Still have a headache. Will discontinue using this med.

I took it due to a bacterial infection that I got while getting a pedicure. I had gotten severe hives and burning from the infection that I got. Since taking the medication that took away those symotoms, I have had insomnia, lack of appitite, and abdominal pain.
