I wish I had bothered to find this site before taking this medication. My doctor prescribed Sulfameth, 1 pill 2x a day for 7 days for a skin infection and wheezing in my chest following a bad head cold. I quit taking this medication after 3.5 days for many of the reasons already described by others herein.

The first day I noticed my heart was "racey" and I had a headache. My symptoms have been getting progressively worse. I feel compelled to eat every few hours (possibly a reaction to feeling lethargic) but food just doesn't taste right. I seemed to crave sweet and salty snacks, which has caused me to retain water. To add to my frustration, I noticed that I seemed to be feeling worse and getting sicker instead of better. My head has been very stuffy and I thought I might be coming down with strep or the flu after feeling like I had an ulcer in the back of my throat. My mouth has been very dry and I am finding it uncomfortable to swallow. My tongue and the top of my mouth is very sensitive and feels raw. Also, my chest wheezing has gotten no better. I have felt very tired and i have no energy to do my normal walks in the morning let alone a full work out. In fact, walking across the room is quite taxing right now. I can't sleep but am exhausted. I was absolutely out of it today, and considered going to the urgent care facility to see what is going on. That's when I discovered that many people have reported similar experiences. Thankfully, I never got a rash or the high fever. This seems like a terrible medication and I will not be completing my course.

Oh my God! The itching is horrible! I woke up and my eyes crossed from the severity. I could not even go to work. After taking Sufameth/trimethoprim for 2 days (2 pills/da) for a UTI, my scalp started to itch. I scratched all day with a pencil...to no avail. Later that day, the vaginal and rectal itch was unmerciful. Vagisil maximum COULD NOT TOUCH it. I scheduled a gyne appointment because I thought, maybe I was developing something else...yeast infection. But there were no other signs. My husband suggested it could be an allergic reaction to the medicine. My nurse suggested I take an antihistimine like Benadryl. That provided some relief. Now I see similar postings on the web about severe itching. Thank goodness I only have one more pill of this 3 day treatment.

I started taking Sulfamethoxazole for a bladder infection. The 3rd day I experienced joint pain in my legs, the advise nurse told me to continue with the meds, I did. The fifth day I suffered lower back pain, joint pain, and by the evening had a temp of a 101. The advise nurse told me to continue with my meds. The 6th day, I had a fever, nausious, went to my DR, my fever was at 101, abdominal pain, chills;I gave more blood, after 3 hrs of waiting for results, she looked at me and said she didn't know what was wrong with me...she had discussed my symptoms with a disease specialist and said I was probably experiencing drug fever and to stop the meds (2 pills left). When I got home my fever was at 103.5...
The next day, my fever had broke, I had a migraine all day, I went back in to give more blood. The 8th day, I woke up which appeared to be a sun burn on my face and ears...which led to little red bumps all over my body. The advise nurse looked at my chart and said she didn't believe this medication would cause this...I told her I was allergic to this medication, she wanted to know why I thought that...

Doc gave me this drug for a nasty sinus infection. I was supposed to take 2 a day for l4 days. Today is day 7 and I have stopped taking it.

I am battling red, itchy eyes, flaming, itchy areas between my toes and it is starting between my fingers. My lips are numb and I just noticed my baby toes are swollen (go figure).

I've taken an antihistamine and quite frankly, I'm nervous. On top of all that mess, when I woke up with red eyes, I assumed it was pink eye b/c I teach preschool. It was Sat., so the doc called me in antibiotic eye drops, polymixin. The nurse at the BC/BS 24 hour help line said it contains some of the same ingredients as the sulfameth. Never again!

I was using it for acne. I'd been on it about two weeks when I started having sudden high fever and extreme lethary. (Like if I didn't lay down, I'd fall down). I'd hit the bed for several hours, and wake up feeling improved. Then I'd go through the same thing later that night; fever back up and horrific fatigue. I kept thinking I was coming down with something and even remarked that I was glad I was "already on an antibiotic." Then realized my fevers were shortly after my dose. Nurse said "no, that wouldn't do it. I took one more dose to "see" and in addition to the fever going up, that time my lips swelled and itched. Spoke with the Dr. and he said NEVER to use a sulfa med again, as the next reaction could be quite dangerous.
