I was prescribed a sulfameth drug for a severe UTI which entailed terrible abdominal pain & blood in urine. I took it for 2 days and started feeling better. The third day, I was hit with a severe allergic reaction, which after reading some of the side effects, I realize now that i should have gone to the er or called 911. It started with a terrible headache, then vomiting. That night my fever shot up to 104 degrees!!! But, I was freezing. I was shaking uncontrollably, confused, joints aching, you name it. I thought I may have had a migrane and ended up falling asleep and never took any of the medicine on day three. On day four, I woke up feeling MUCH better, and noticed red blotches all over my hands. The second I saw this, I knew it was an allergic reaction. I went and showed the pharmacist and told him about what had happened, and he said, yes, it seemed that way to him too. He said to call my doctor and let them know I had a reaction. When I did that, all they said was they would put it in my chart. I was not even offered an alternative to it considering I still probly had a UTI. I think they did this because now that I have researched it quite a bit, I have learned that people who are allergic to penicillin are more likely to experience a reaction to sulfa drugs. And, yes...I am, and have always been extremely allergic to penicillin. I believe this was overlooked when I was prescribed with the sulfameth.

I had a stye/ staff infection in my right eye. It was swollen and severely hurting me. Well, my doctor put me on sulfameth and a eyedrop antibiotic. I don't mind taking the eye drops, but these pills are making me feel horrible. I am on 1 pill twice daily for 10 days. I asked the doctor and the pharmacist if this stuff causes constipation and they both said no. Well, I haven't been able to use the bathroom well since I started it. My muscles twitch, my eyes are sensitive to the sunlight, I can't go to sleep easily, I've been itching up a storm, and I have headaches. I want to just stop the medication but if I do then I will never get rid of this infection in my eye. I figured I'd stop the meds in the middle of the week. I hate feeling bloated and constipated. Has anyone else had the constipation effect?

Due to renal transplant (Kidney) I have to be real careful of what types of antibiotics I take. I took my prescription to the pharmacy. The pharmacist at Walgreens stated it had a major drug interaction with my anti-rejection medication. After working with the doctor they prescribed Sulfameth. It worked wonders. I did feel some sadness and was alittle irritable but that outwayed taking the chance that the upper respirtory infection damaged my kidneys and increased my creatnine to where I would be back on dialysis. so a little discomfort for me helped maintain my way of life and that is living my life to fullest and not becoming or behaving like a victim.

I'm posting this for nikieis, who's husband has been having problems with the Sulfameth. The Doctor and the Walgreens Pharmacist that you spoke to made a mistake, rare side effects of Sulfameth are cold sores, persistent sore throat and fever. I'm surprised that the Walgreens Pharmacist made such a mistake because they usually are so efficient, and if a patient complains about a symptom they will look up in their computer to see the possible side effects - both common and rare. If you still have the Walgreens pick-up slip, it will have a drawing of the drug as well as a description so that there are no possible mistakes. Also, on the pick-up slip is a list which describes the drug, what its for, how to use the medicine, cautions, possible side effect, rare side effect and effect to contact you Doctor immediately for. I would also think that if the information is on the packing slip, that the Walgreens website would have all the possible side effects and cautions. so Patients can look them up if they want to be informed about the medication.
I hope that your husband has recovered and is feeling better.

I have been takingSulfameth/trimethoprim 800/180 tabs and the pharmacist pamplet said to call my doctor with any occurance of sore throat. I have taken a total of 4 tablets 2/day and woke up with a terrible sore throat and a headache later in the day only to call my Dr. and have them tell me that this is NOT a side effect and they want me to come in for a throat culture. Honestly I'm a little Freaked out because of the risk of Stevens-Johnson's Syndrome that makes your skin peel off and can make you go blind.

I was not happy when I was prescribed the Sulfameth. I get sinus infections often, and am usually prescribed Amoxil, but I had a different doctor. The first three days I didn't notice anything, not even a change in my symptoms. The third day I woke up with pain in my left wrist. As the day progressed my right wrist started hurting too. Neither pains did I attribute to the Sulfameth. That night I couldn't get cool, but the weather was very warm, I just it was the weather. The fourth day I had body aches all over and my sinus infection felt worse, my glands were swollen, and I had a fever over 101 degrees. (I never have fever.) This is the fifth day, I can barely walk across my apartment without breaking a sweat, my hands feel like every bone in them is broken. I decided to look up the side effects after a phone call to my pharmacist didn't give me any answers. It is so good to find out I am not alone.

My pharmacist substituted this medicine for Bactrim DS that my doctor prescribed for my bladder infection. Since taking it I have trouble sleeping, anxiety, constipation, feel jittery, chills, nausea, loss of apetite, and cold sweats. I am not taking one more of these pills.

I was prescribed Sulfameth for a sinus infection. After the 3rd pill, I started noticing my hands shaking. I wasn't immediately alarmed, but after an hour or so, I noticed my legs and head shaking as well. I began getting highly anxious and light headed. None of these were listed as side effects for the drug, and neither my doctor's office nor pharmacist could substantiate that this was because of the medication. Had it not been for this site, I might have thought I was losing it. I stopped taking the Sulfameth, and now feel fine.

If I had gone online first I never would of taken this medication. I too needed to be treated for UTI and was given this. I became constipated for 2 1/2 days and on the 3rd day at night I started to itch uncontrollably. Next day, I am covered in hives/rash all over the body. All red little pimples and parts of my body/face burn. It seems it is all over the internet but the pharmacist gave it to me casually anyways.
