I was diagnosed as having Hypothyroidism in 1-07. My TSH was 83 and I was sleepy all the time, moody and anxious, hair falling out, gaining weight, heavy clotting peiods, etc. I was 51 and it was all blamed for a while in perimenopause. I have been on Synthroid .50 since then and some things are better like hair loss and sleepiness. My last check a few months ago was 1.3. What I hate most of all is waking up after a few hours of sleep and I feeing like I am on some kind of speed. My mind is wide awake and jumping from one thought to another, sometimes sweating heavily with my heart racing. I was diagnosed 10 years ago with Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia and was on Beta blockers for a while. I have a new doctor now and never discussed this with her. The anxiety is awful sometimes too . I start to get fears of not being able to swallow or breathe but can keep it under control. An average night of sleep is five broken up hours of sleep and every now and then from exhaustion I will get close to seven hours. I am foggy headed a lot but I never hardly yawn or feel sleepy in the daytime.

Originally, i was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. This was about 6 years ago. I was on a beta-blocker for 3 years. Afterwards i was diagnosed as being hypothyroid (about 2.5 years ago). I've been taking synthroid ever since. At first my dosage was .075 mg. It was changed to .05 mg a year ago. I haven't gained any weight since i became hypothyroid, but i've had many other problems. Some of them include, difficulty swallowing and breathing, heaviness in throat area, memory loss, insomnia, lack of focus. These are the most serious problems.

I have been on 25mcg of sythroid for 12 days now for treatment of hypothyroid condition, last night I noticed a bald spot on the top of my head bigger than a quarter and some of the surrounding hairs turned white. I have had extremly thick black hair my entire life, I have only found 3 white hairs in the past 3 years even though I am 37 years old, I have also had swollen eyes in the morning where I have to put an ice pack on them to get rid of the bags under my eyes. I think I would rather have the hypthyroid symptoms than th synthroid side effects.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in April of this year (2007) kind of by accident through a routine checkup. I had gained a bit of weight over the past two years, but that was really my only symptom. I was begun on 75 mcg of a generic brand of Synthroid, levothyroxine. Since I began this medication, I have rapidly gained another 15 pounds despite a 1,000 calorie per day diet. I retain fluid horribly. My ankles, wrists, hands and face swell daily. My muscles ache, especially my legs, upon walking across a room. I'm fatigued, short of breath. My LDL cholesterol level has skyrocketed in only three months and now I'm being told I need to be on a statin drug. I cry frequently and feel uncharacteristically anxious and irritable, but this could be due to the frustration I am experiencing with the loss of my sense of well-being. In essence, I felt much better before being placed on the medication. I may, in fact, discontinue the medication totally and see if over time I begin to feel better. Like so many other stories I'm hearing, my doctor seems totally unconcerned.

i've been on synthroid for 9 years. started at some low dose and gradually went up to112 mg. get extreme itching all day everyday if i don't take allegra for that.not a rash just itching. that doesn't bother me as much as the fatique. every joint in my body aches all the time. sure there are better days but fo rthe most part it's bad. tried physical therapy and chiripratic care but no avail. they ended my sessions. my legs get sooo weak and my feet burn lower back really aches. sometimes muscle cramps. i'm very negative towards my loving family and it hurts me to do so. can't seem to keep upbeat. soo tired all the time.
is it the syntroid? i used to be very energenic and a doer. now i have spurts of activity in the morning , but then i just can't get motivated. help me any suggestions?

Hi everyone
I've been on Levothyroxine since August 2006. Eversince being on them I actually feel worse. I've always weighed 7 and 1/2 stones and I've actually put on half a stone since last August. I watch what I eat and I exercise regularly. Recently I had an increase in my thyroxine to 75mcg and my tummy bloated so badly I looked pregnant. GP has dismissed all this and said he didn't know what it was! I spoke to a rude woman on the phone at British Thyroid Foundation who was extremely rude and unhelpful. She said it wasn't the medication and blamed it on my thyroid! How can it be me when my weight has always been the same? I've never had problems like this before and the more sites I've visited on the net, I've actually found that so many people are unhappy on thyroxine and a lot of them experience bloating and weight gain. so something definately is taking place inside us and the Doctors are ignoring it. Its this medication thats making us worse and we are their guinea pigs and in the years to come they will admit they are in the wrong. There are so many thyroid sufferers and it's all about fobbing us off on cheap stuff. Well all those who don't care about us may it happen to them so they realize how and what we have to go through every single day. I am looking into alternative natural medications and am trying to also change my diet to help. We are stuck cos thyroxine is for life. We are all in the same boat and we have to raise this issue. A good website is thyroiduk.com
The good thing is we are all doing our research into this matter and more we are knowledgeable in this matter the better it is for us. I know Armour works for a lot of people but I can't take Armour.
From an unhappy hypothyroid sufferer.

I would strongly recommend anyone with hypothyroidism or on thyroid medication read a book called The Thyroid Solution. I believe the author was Dr. Arem. He seems to be an open-minded physician fully aware of the catastrophic effect low thyroid hormone and also quite aware of the inadequate care most patients are receiving.
There are so many misconceptions about thyroid health-- and many general practitioners do not have nearly enough information to be helping patients. He fully covers the problem of relying on your doctor to provide the adequate dosage. As well, many people with so-called 'normal' TSH levels still show symptoms of hypothyroidism. In fact, the 'normal' range was simply found by measuring the TSH of a cross-section of people to determine what level makes most people feel healthy. The problem with this is that some people may naturally have an extremely low TSH, but if it raises to a 4 (which is considered fine) that person may feel quite ill. There body knows something has changed but to a doctor who only looks at blood tests, they can't see why there is a problem.
In the past doctors used symptomology to determine the health of a patient, not ridiculous blood tests!
Best of all, Dr. Arem confirms that your symptoms are NOT IN YOUR HEAD like doctors try to convince you.
This is also a great book for people dealing with family members who are hypothyroid to understand what their loved one is dealing with emotionally.

My eight month old daughter is hypothyroid and has been taking synthroid since she was about 4 weeks old. Within days of taking this, her sleeping pattern changed dramatically. All the doctors are telling me welcome to parenthood. But, each time they inscrease her dosage, she gets worse as far as sleeping goes. Day, night, it doesn't matter, she will not sleep more than about an hour or two at a time. Am I crazy, or shouldn't she be sleeping a little better than that? I am not a first time mom, I know all babies don't sleep well. But, I feel that this cannot be good for her, how does she go like this? I know my husband and I are struggling on only 2 or 3 hours of sleep a night. I am almost to the point of desperation for help.

just started taking it today. .05mcg synthroid. TSH was 135 very hypothyroid. I have 5 children, one only 4 months old. Can this stuff work quickly to restore my metabolism. I am literally pulling myself throught the day, and begging God for sleep at night. I was normal and healthy all my life, until now. I want to know if I'll ever feel normal again. The things I read on here have scared me. I hate anxiety attacks, weight gain, oh and do not want to lose my hair....Really concerned

I'm wondering if synthroid is the answer for hypothyroid? I mean, pretty much all our guts give out over time... How many people actually go into a coma and die from hypothyroidism? I took synthroid and had to get off it after just one week! I was slamming doors around here, screaming, out of control, miserable. I've talked to plenty of women at work who have lots of trouble controlling their dosage. I've read some other comments here: BEFORE I took synthroid, I had aching legs and feet, thickness in my throat, weakness, tiredness, can't concentrate. I only take a tranquilizer for eight years, same dosage, for anxiety. I'm thinking there HAS to be another way to treat hypothyroid. What if my kidneys are giving out and synthroid is overloading it, and THAT is the primary disease, with the hypo business secondary. I can see kidneys giving out, what with all the stuff we eat, yearly innoculations for flu, and so on. Anybody have any thoughts on (1) How many folks actually die from hypothyroidism via coma, and (2) Is hypo the primary condition, or is kidney primary, and (3) What is with my feet and legs hurting and aching all the time?!?! i STARTED TAKEING SYNTHROID OVER FIVE MONTHS AGO. tHE FIRST DAY i FELT GREAT AND THEN MY SYMPTOMS THAT I STARTED WITH CAME BACK PLUS MORE LIKE CHEST PAIN AND WIERD FEELING IN MY THROUT. THE DOCTOR SAID IT WAS NORMAL BUT I COULD INCREASE MY DOSAGE TO A PILL AND A HALF. i DID THAT AND i EXPERIANCED LOSS OF MENTAL CONSENTRATION, EXTREM FEELINGS OF STRESS WHEN THERE IS NO REASON FOR IT IRRITABILITY. TO A POINT THAT i BEGAN HAVEING ANGER EPISODES. i DECIDED TO SEE A DIFFERENT dOCTOR AND HAD MY bLOOD TESTS FAXED TO HIM. oNLY TO FIND OUT THE ORIGINAL DOCTOR APPARENTLY DID NOT KNOW HOW TO READ THE TEST RESULTS. i WAS NOT HYPOTHYROID BUT I WAS HYPERTHYROID. IF THE NUMBERS ARE LOW THAT MEANS YOUR BODY IS CREATEING TO MUCH HORMONE WHICH IS HYPERTHYROID IF THE NUMBERS ARE HIGH THAT MEANS YOUR BODY IS NOT CREATING ENOUGH HORMONE WHICH MEANS THAT YOU ARE HYPOTHYROID. I HAVE BEEN OF SYNTHROID FOR TWO WEEKS AND FEEL TEN TIMES BETTER. ALTHOUGH I MAY HAVE MORE PERMANENT DAMAGE. IT IS OK TO SEE OTHER DOCTORS. I HAVE BEEN INTERVIEWING DOCTORS FOR YEARS THANK GOD I HAVE FINALLY FOUND ONE THAT IS INTERESTED IN MY HEALTH AND LISTENS TO ME.

Does anyone have any side effects which affect voice quality - husky, airy or weakness in the voice speaking or singing? I'm hypothyroid, 200mcgs synthroid daily, some depression, insomnia, weight gain and struggling with getting back to my pre-hypothyroid state of well being.

This registry is a place to share positive or negative side effects of using Synthroid. If you directly experienced a side effect while using Synthroid, then we encourage you to enter it here. Please note that entries here are the experiences of individual users, and in no way means that you or anyone else will experience the same side effect, since the same medication affects people in different ways. Please always contact your physician.

I had always been 160 lbs since 8th grade, which was a fine weight for me bacause I'm tall and muscular. When I was 25 I gained 20 lbs over 3 months with no change in diet or activity. So I went to the doctor because hypothyroidism is very prevelent in my family. The blood work showed I was borderline hypothyroid, so the dr didn't suggest starting any medication. So I started working out 4-5 times a week for at least 1-1 1/2 hours per day. I also got on phentermine to help jump start my diet. After doing this for 2 months, I had gained 5 lbs. Which is crazy because anytime I needed to lose weight, I had no problem dropping 10 lbs in 2 weeks. I was frustrated but ignored it for a while because I got pregnant shortly after that. During the pregnancy, my throid was checked again and was normal. I weighed 248 lbs the day I went in to give birth. 2 weeks later, I weighed 210lbs and a month after that I was 200lbs. Then I went back to work,(where I walk continuously all day) and I could not budge my weight below 200 lbs no matter what I did. So I went back to the dr and I was slightly hypothyroid again. I opted to go on generic Synthroid 25mcg. I then gained 37 lbs over 4-5 months. So I went to another dr. to get on phentermine. I started the phentermine and lost about 27 lbs. I have been off phentermine for a while, but have been working out vigorously working out and watching my diet and couldn't lose another pound. So, I thought the synthroid might be making it harder to lose weight. I stopped taking it and have lost about 10lbs in the last month. I think there is definitely a connection in synthroid and my inability to lose weight. But I still can't get below 200lbs and I still feel sluggish. I am only 28 and don't think I should attribute this to age. I can understand age causing weight gain of 5-10 lbs per year but not 155lbs in May '05 to 183lbs in Nov '05 then to 200lbs in Jul '07. Please give me any suggestions you might have. Diet, medication, activities???
