In August I started taking Topamax and every week i am to up the dosage now I am taking 50mg in the morning and and 50 mg at night because my headaches was so bad that I had to quit my job because I couldn't serve food and vomit at the same time. Now that my headaches have gone from everyday to about every other day I have noticed the indigestion. Because I had because sick so long the doctor suggested I had a reflux and it would correct itself.I started looking at all the medication I was on and the list from the pharmacy never indicated indigestion on as a side effect for Topamax. My appetite is non.Weight lost about 20 lbs but I could afford that and then some. I try not to use the upstairs of my home if no one is there because of the dizziness. And simple chores around the house go undone.I have bounce $130 in bank fees this month and can't figure out how and gave the finances over to my husband to keep up with and I am a math major in college this semester. This is how bad things have gotten some simple words i can't recall how to spell . I have to use the dictionary. It's bad.

Hi, I'm 34 yo man from Spain, I started Topamax 3 weeks ago, first 25 mg at night then increasing 25 per week first in the morning then 50 in the night, next week I have to take 50 mg in the morning and 50 mg in the night and I'm really scared. About two hours after taking the pill, I can't hardly speak, i know the words but i can't say them, my head is buzzing, nothing is clear, I talked to my neurologist and he said everything should go in two or three months, but this is affecting to my job, i can't think clearly and i can't do anything right, i have to talk to my doctor to determine to keep on working or taking some days off. I have severe migraines since i was 24. I hope the side effects go soon. Excuse about my English, it's not good and I'm under Topamax right now.

I have been on Topamax since October of 2007. I currently take 150 mg (split in AM and PM) for migraines. The drug is working wonderfully for the migraines but I am finding that I cannot do my job anymore due to the side effects and am not considering filing for disability. I am so fatigued all the time I literally cannot keep up with my work load. I have the tingling in my feet and hands, the funny taste of soda, the forgetfulness, and the "cannot find the word" thing. But the biggest problem is just that I cannot get everything done that I used to be able to get done due to plain old fatigue. I am so tired all the time. I find myself crying all the time due to constant stress of not being able to do what I used to. It took me a while to admit to myself that I couldn't to it anymore ( that nasty ego was in the way) but I finally had to admit that I couldn't keep up like I did before I was on the Topamax. I don't want to give up the Topamax and go back to the daily migraines and if I find a different job I lose all my retirement. I'm a teacher so I don't get any social security so my only alternative is to go for disability due to my having to take Topamax. I may have to hire an attorney to help me but after fighting migraines and trying to work my entire life, I surrender.

Thirsty all the time. Eye-strain in hot offices and when using computers at work. On very low dose which control seizures (15mg) but may have to consider changing job. Happy with the drug at this level, but scared of having to up the dose. Been on it 3 months. Am still able to run competitively now in the Winter, but I guess Summer training will need to be very limited.

Have been taking 400mg of Topamax for 7 years for severe chronic pain condition. Currently experiencing some new issues. Originally had only wonderful things to say, never had any complaints and thought Topamax was doing it's job for me. Tried going off once after developing kidney stone (thought was only side effect), but new med made liver enzymes escalate. Doctors just exploring which of these troubles may/may not be attributable to Topamax. Currently taking several other meds, as well. Which came first, chicken or egg?

Topamax is w/out a doubt the WORST drug I've ever been on. It made me brain dead. I couldn't find a job on Topamax. I would be in interviews and would space out and couldnt' answer questions. People looked at me like I was crazy. I felt like I had Alzheimer's at 38, especially when my neuro prescribed Exelon, the drug for Alzheimer's to counteract the cognitive side effects. As I said, couldn't find a job, had no insurance. My topa-lovin' neuro was giving it to me and getting me on the patient=ass program through Johnson/Johnson, the maker's of TM. She didn't want to help me get on another anticonvulsant PA program. Finally, I had to charge another med on my credit card because I couldn't take this toxic gunk in my body anymore. The decay of my mind has escalated to the point that I don't know if I will ever be back to myself again. BEWARE of this drug. I haven't even covered the eye pain, insomnia, headaches, leg cramps (i can go on).

I am taking Topomax for migraines. I always start everything at a really LOW dose since I have a lot of probs with side effects. Started at 15 mg and went right away to 30mg (15mg twice daily) the second week because I was dying from headaches. The other antidepressants prescribed for constant daily headache prevention all of a sudden weren't working. I didn't want to take my abortive med for migraines every day (Amerge) so I was curious if Topomax might help my daily headache pain. Possibly my daily headaches had become migraines... so hard to tell one from the other anymore. I teach exercise for a living and so much of my headache pain is exercise induced. I found that while on topomax, all of a sudden 2 Advil would take away a headache I would get after exercising which never happened before. I would take two Advil before doing some of my hardest exercise to prevent a headache and for the most part that worked too... and that never worked before. I had tried all kinds of NSAID's before and after exercise at the advice of my neurologist to no avail. I did have one diffuse headache yesterday that might have been a true migraine and I took Amerge because Advil didn't help. I have been on the 30 mg two week now. But, now the downside. Since on the 30mg I feel like my chest is heavy a lot of time when I do water exercise... I am exhausted a lot doing my usual routines... I feel edgy, can't sleep well at night. I HAVE to have a two hour nap after teaching in the morning or I can't function mentally or physically. I sleep well for that nap time. Seems like I have thermoregulation problems. I teach water exercise and if the water is a little cold it bothers me and it never used to. Then in the pool awhile I feel hot. Same when I sleep.. I need a lot of covers, then I throw them off. Then they are on again. No I am not menopausal yet. My brain is hazy on topomax as well. I take bellydance lessons and sometimes I realize I can't remember what my teacher just told me. Now people reading this, don't think that just because this happens to me, it will happen to you. I know people who LOVE topomax with zero side effects. They don't tend to write in to posting boards. Also, sometimes side effects go away. Be patient if you want to give topomax a shot. I am thinking I am going to go back to 15 mg again... and see how I tolerate that. Because I teach exercise, the hardest thing is to feel the heaviness in the chest and the lack of ambition. This is not me. It is great not to have the headache pain, but I don't know if this is the drug for me. I was excited about the "losing weight " side effect , and I could see how skinny people who lose their appetite easily might be affected, but it takes a lot to stop me from eating LOL darn! I did read in another chat some poor chap had sinisitis for months and took TONS of antibiotics before finding out Topomax gives sinisitis type side effects in a small amount of people. So if you get sinisitis, don't take antibiotics before checking out if topomax is the culprit.
My heart goes out to every person out there trying to find the magic bullet for their headache, siezures, whatever... ADVICE.. .start with SMALL doses... you may be able to get used to side effects if you work up slowly in ALL drugs. In many drugs that didn't come in small doses, I took out 3/4 of what was inside just to get a mini dose. Ask your doc if you can mix one capsule or one pounded up tab of your med with juice and store it in the referigerator. You can drink say 1/8 cup a day of the juice to get 1/8 of a capsule. It is a lot easier than chopping up a tab into eighths. Also ask your doc about childrens doses that come in liquids with droppers. Topomax makes taking smaller doses easy with the sprinkles.. you are encouraged to open the capsule and sprinkle as little as you want on food. Good luck all. L.

it has been quit a ride with this drug, the mood swings are qite a trip for my kids but they are adjusting and always willing to help no matter what. The stomach cramps are a bit much at times feel like i may have an accident out side, like i can't hold it. The confusion and not able to get my words out right is also fustrating at times. I hve lots of energy, like i am on some kind of uppers almost feel like i jhve to let my doctor write a letter to my job explain my new found energy level. My tingling also began the very same day it freaked me out, but i am dealing with it my migranes are now two in about three weeks as opposed to four to five in one week, for me that is great!

i was put on topamax for migraines back in aug 07.
well, i stopped it like 5 months ago. (2june 08) i still feel "out of it" like i'm here but im not. headaches came back but i would rather deal with them than all these side effects. i got severe panic attacks and nervousness, MAJOR HAIR LOSS, AGORAPHOBIA (FEAR OF LEAVING MY HOUSE CUZ IM SCARED TO HAVE ANOTHER PANIC ATTACK), i constantly feel dispatched from my family (i have 3 boys and a husband) every day i feel sick or tired, or both. which led me to stop the meds. (25mg am and 25-50mg pm) i weaned off over like 2 weeks (on my own cuz the neuro told me not to stop it and its all in my head.
i had to quit my job cuz of the panic attacks that just happen for no reason.
i still feel all the side effects even though i have been off topamax. hair loss, panic attacks, depression, "high" feeling all the time, cant hold a normal conversation. i have changed soooo dramatically from when i first went to the neuro and started this HORRIBLE DRUG. poor concentration, i don't feel like i want to be involved in anything- i just wanna lay on the couch with an ice pack on my head. i don't know what to do. my neuro doesn't know i stopped the drug and i was so mad at him for putting me on it that i didn't go to my last appt. now i have to wait until January to see him.
