45 y/o female, nurse, prescribed Toprol XL 50mg daily. Could not take drug at bedtime as suggested by MD. Was not able to sleep. After a few months experienced visual problems, joint and muscle pain, anxiety, gi upset, weight gain as well as sleeplessness and heavy sensation of chest along with shortness of breath. Complained to MD to no avail. Called cardiologist, he suggested brand use as opposed to generic. Apparently, generic drug does not provide continuous steady release. Also, he lowered dose to 25mg daily. Will report subsequent effects but hope to be weaned off the drug entirely. I appreciate all the information that has been posted on this site, especially the beta blocker info. Hope this helps somebody else!

It's hard to describe all the side effects I think I am having from taking 50mg. of toprol 1x a day, at bedtime. Since taking it, I have heart palpitations, flushing, full body pain, sleep all the time. Feel without hope- so I guess that would be described as depression. I have 0 energy, or even motivation. I have become a hermit in my own house, have not gone out anywhere at all- the entire summer. At first I thought it was becuase certain terrible things were happening with my daughter- but now that has abated-BTW she's 47. So I don't think the way I am feeling has to do with that. I feel just ghorrible- worse every day. Don't want to do anything. All I do most of the time, is sleep, or pray that God will let me die- I have nothing to live for- or Please heal me. Finally I have an appointment with my Cardiologist-Internist this Thursday, and I will ask him to take me off the Toprol. Tonight I am not going to take it, nor anymore until I see him. Nancy

I take toprol 2x per day(50 mg/100 total). I get extreme headaches all over my head. I also get panic attacks(feel like I need to call 911 due to increased heart rate) at night and can't sleep. I feel nauseous at bedtime, and the feeling continues through mid-morning. I used to work, work, work, but now I worry and am very lethargic. When I work hard, my heart races and again I feel nauseous. I have had cardio-version two times now to get my heart back in rhythm. I am 49 years old. These problems run in my family. My mother's grandmother died at the age of 49 and my mom has had cardio-verson 4 times now. Who wouldn't worry? I am also on tambicor, and aspirin once a day. I have gained weight! Just what I needed.

I am taking 25 mg of Toprol XL once a day at bedtime and it is effectively sedating as well as antiarrhythmic. However, I feel tired and I end up taking naps much of the day, which is extremely unusual. Actually, I am getting twice the amount of sleep I have ever gotten.
Some of the side effects and symptoms that others are mentioning on this board are also symptoms of magnesium deficiency, which is the cause of many cardiovascular problems in the US and West due to a naturally magneisum deficient diet based upon refined wheat. ******

How do others fare after going off Toprol XL?
-- By alguy | Reply | (1) replies | Send Private MailI have found after several months of using Toprol (50 mg dose before bedtime) and its generic form that it caused in me unaccustomed "aches and pains" and annoying queasiness. So, not liking the near nausea I was getting from it (I am also on Atacan and staying on it) and have only labile HBP in the 130's and 140's), I decided to try going off the Toprol.
I can't tell you what a difference it has made being off that medicine. Nor has my HBP been affected significantly (nor was it by being either on it or off it). I had had a minor heart attack late last year ('06) which in the opinion of doctors demanded a quintuple bypass (I am 84 y/o). The bypass went smoothly. I feel great (I am working full time as a college teacher).
I was hesitant to "experiment" with going off such a potent drug as Toprol. So, I tapered off of it for about only a week. But now that I have and confine myself to taking 'Baby Aspirin' at night along with Atacan in the a.m., I feel 100% better--no more nightmares, restlessness, bloatedness, muscle pain, and above all that annoying feeling of queasiness in my stomach.
I won't get into finger-pointing about advisories from MDs. Medicine is an art as well as a science. In either respect, advice is subject to various conclusions and differences of opinion. People react differently to various medicines. I also feel that MDs these days probably tend to over-prescribe, but not necessarily for "legal" reasons yet that, too, may be factored in in some cases.. There are also regional differences within the U.S. in terms of types and degrees of medical treatment of this or that condition. Some regions are "radical," some conservative in terms of treatment. From my own experience, I would advise people to find out what region they are in by asking their physician about the given "syndrome" that reigns in a given region. Florida, for instance, it outstanding for tending toward the radical. This may well be a reflection of the "patient market" or demand in the given State, a market in Florida, at least, that includes the yearning by oldsters for perpetual life for well past the age of 100 y/o! ---ALW
