I have been taking Toprol for 2 1/2 years following bypass surgery. Some weakness has occurred, but I have bicycled 5,500 miles and even finished in the top five in a couple of amateur races during that time. I often have leg cramps, but have noticed taking a potassium supplement (or eating more bananas) and drinking more water seems to alleviate that problem. Other side effects include reduced sex drive and a need for more sleep and rest. When I don't get enough rest, I get so tired I can barely function. I am also taking Crestor and Avapro (the combination of which has caused even more side effects -- weakness, BP drops, dizziness, sharp muscle pains, sleeplessness, etc.)

I have the usual fatique. Weight gain. I take it in combination with Hyzaar for blood pressure control and heart. The dose was recently increased to 50mg once daily. Symptom I'm questioning as possible side effect is frequent nosebleeds. They started about the same time as dose increase, continue every 2 days or so because the membranes seem to be very thin and the arterie starts up again. Cauterized once, didn't help. One nostril. I have plenty of information on nosebleeds and stopping them but the cause eludes me. I'm over 70 and healthy and active. Thank you. Con

My mother was given Toprol while in the hospital to lower her blood pressure. After a few days, she was completely disoriented and could not answer simple questions about the year or events that had just happened. The doctors thought it was just due to a combination of her age and the stress of being in the hospital but at our request discontinued the Toprol. Within less than a day, her mental clarity had returned.
