Toprol-XL and dizziness

I had taken Toprol XL for years and thought I was doing fairly well. The side effects began to get worse with the absolute worse being that I woke a few times in the middle of the night with the room spinning out of control and sweating. The usual side effects I've now read such as weight gain, dizziness, dreams, shortness of breath, digestion not quite right, etc. had always been there, but I didn't quite recognize them realize until I came across this web site. Thank goodness I did. I have now been completely off Toprol XL for over a month and truly feel so much better (and normal). Even though for years I've watched my diet carefully and exercised faithfully, I would gain weight extremely easily and when I did go on a "diet", I would have to practically eat nothing in order to lose a few pounds. I'm so hoping now my metabolism will return to normal, and I can lose these extra pounds I want to lose. I realize everyone can't get off the medication, but if at all possible, P L E A S E consider doing so. This stuff is scarey!!

I am a 45 year old black female. After the death of my father, I started experiencing blood pressure problems and headaches. I was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea 2 years ago. Not having bought a CPAP yet has contributed to a lot of the blood pressure and headache problems. But, my GP put me on Toprol in June '08. I am having difficulty sleeping.Every time I eat, I have severe gas and my chest is hurting off and on. There has got to be a better solution. I started exercising and using Isagenix (******). It is simply wonderful - I have lost weight and toxins. When I go to my doctor on tomorrow, I am going to ask him if I can get off of Toprol. I do not like the way this medication makes me feel.

I am a woman in her early 60's. I have slightly elevated BP abd it does tend to spike first thing in the morning, after waking and is much lower (normal) at night. I have tried several different BP meds and had side effects of all of them. The Doctor recently put me on Toprol XL 25mg. After about three weeks, I really did not feel well - extreme fatigue, severe leg and joint pain, depression. I just could not function. I know I am extremely sensitive to medication. I decided to come off the Toprol, after only three weeks and go back to Lisinopril 2.5MG. Now, after only two days of not taking Toprol, I truly feel very weird. Far less tired, but extreme dizziness and a kind of spaced out feeling. Is this just the withdrawal from Toprol...and after only three weeks of taking it? Plus, my BP seems to be very low - the lowest I have ever recorded it. 112/55 last night. Does coming off Toprol actually have a reverse effect and plummit your BP until it is out of your system. If so, why has my doctor told me to triple upon the Lisinopril now I am back on that. Dealing with even slightly elevated BP has become such a major issue for me.

I'm a 30 yr old healthy male. I went to the ER, and then the Dr., about 4 weeks ago after waking up with intense pain in the veins of my right arm and having pounding palps. I had just been told some extremely stressful news the night before, so I was pretty sure this was blood pressure & stress related. ... EKG showed Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome, so that's what the Dr's assumed was the problem. I never knew what it was called, but I've had my heart race due to WPW many times since I was a young child .. this did not seem to be related. This was just pounding.

The cardiologist put me on 50mg of Toprol XL daily to control the WPW - even though that wasn't acting up. I left confused. Pharmacy issued generic Metoprolol Succinate mfg. by Sandoz.

I didn't want to be on meds, so I didn't take it for the first few days, hoping that I would return to normal. After all, I just woke up with this all of the sudden.. I had been fine the day before. Palps continued, though, so eventually I relented and started taking the meds.

The first two or three weeks were filled with ups and downs. Exhaustion, palpitations and anxiety would come and go.

This past weekend things got really bad. I began having anxiety attacks -- I think that's what it was, I'd never had one before -- and my vision was totally screwed up. I couldn't focus on anything and was sensitive to some lighting. Black text on a bright white screen (lcd monitor) was especially hard to read. I was completely in a dazed & confused state. Loud noises and crowds were bothering me... which was awful, considering it was my best friend's wedding. Also had headaches, lightheadedness & loss of appetite. These side effects came and went on Friday & Saturday and were pretty constant on Sunday & Monday.

I decided to quit Toprol cold-turkey on Sunday. I have been 2 days without. I have used L-Theamine to reduce stress and keep my blood pressure steady. It seems to be working. I also began taking CoQ10 today after reading some good things about it here.

My vision & mental focus is beginning to improve after 3 days of disabilitating problems. Anxiety has also improved. I even attempted to "get back to normal" at work today, but had to leave after only an hour of strenuous exercise in the heat. Vision problems returned, anxiety set in. It's like riding a really freaking scary roller coaster, except with a legitimate fear that this thing might kill you.

I will update this as time goes by, to let you all know how things worked out for me. I'm really hoping to be mostly back to normal in another day or two, since I haven't been on for very long. Hopefully this will be of help to someone in the future. Damn, I Wish I had never gotten on this stuff.

My BP had been slightly elevated for over a year and my doctor felt it was time for medication. He started me on 25mgs and continued to increase it till I reached 100mgs. I started having anxiety attacks, lightheadedness, dizziness and finally ended up so sick that I was in bed for three days. It was the toprol. I was only on toprol for 3months but found out that trying to come off the drug was the hardest thing I have done. I never had BP spikes before but at the end of the first 24 hrs. without Toprol my BP was hitting 200/104. I went to ER. Matter of fact, the spikes continued and I was in and out of ER until I was finally admitted for tests. The spikes were also accompanied by flushing, rapid pulse(122 beats per minute), lightheadedness and diarrhea.Many times I thought I was having a heart attack. I have seen two cardiologists, an internist and now an endocrinologist for these "BP spikes". All tests come back normal. No matter what the new medication is, nor how low my BP might stay for up to three days....the episodes still happen. My BP can go from a normal range too 200 systolic in a matter of less than 1/2 hr..........Has anyone else had spikes in their BP when coming off toprol. It has been 11 months since stopping this awful drug and I still I no answers....but I have a pile of medical bills.

I started Metoprolol 6 months ago while in the ER. I was weak with a virus and every time I got up and did anything, my heart would race and would feel weaker. I have white coat syndrome so while I was in the ER my BP went up to 227/110. They gave me 25 mg of Toprol and a prescription for 12.5 mg a day. I have gained 17 lbs in 6 months, have zero energy, tired all the time, insomnia, and am depressed for the first time in my life,ad I know it has to be from the Metoprolol. I tried to quit it and 3 days later my heart was racing so bad and my blood pressure was real high. I want to try to quit it but am afraid to. Any suggestions on how to quit it?

I have been on generic Toprol since 2005 to control my high blood pressure. I have many of the symptoms you all experience, tiredness, occasional dizziness, some weight gain. However, the most debilitating side effect I am suffering is neck flushing and anxiety attacks, my chest and neck turn bright red practically whenever people talk to me and I've never had this problem prior to taking this drug, I am shy but not that shy. Now I feel like I have to wear turtlenecks all the time or people will ask me what is wrong with you, are you allergic, etc... I can't even have a regular conversation with my co-workers without my neck turning red and breathing hard. It's ridiculous and I want to know if anyone else has this problem or if I'm just mental.

I'm a 53 year-old male and do regular Cardio Exercise every week and have for 31 years.
A cardiologist put me on Toprol XL 25 MG on November 22nd. The Doctor prescribed it because I add heart irregularities and palpitations which resulted in me going to the hospital as I didn't know what was happening and never had heart palpitations before in my life. I went to the emergency room and they got me stabilized but brought in cardiologist. My heart returned to normal function in a few hours and was result of taking a decongestant as well as Lisinopril 5 MG. I had just started these drugs and had been on them for three days when the heart palpitation instance happened. The decongestant is ... I had done a two hour hard workout at the gym which I do regularly 3 times per week and then the heart irregularities started on day 3 of taking the two drugs. A cardiologists now has stuck me on this Toprol 25 MG after that day because it helps with irregular heart beat plus my blood pressure was a bit high around 140/90. I immediately started noticing side effects from the Toprol 25 MG but stayed on it plus the Lisinopril 5 MG and 325 MG Aspirin for about 12 days at that dose. I started side effects like tremors, tiredness, constipation, strange dreams, anxiousness, impotence, and struggled to do my workouts etc. I made some lifestyle changes like eliminating caffeine, alcohol, etc and that plus the medicine reduced my blood pressure below 120/80 a bit. I stopped the Lisinopril on December 3rd and my blood pressure is still normal and reduced the Toprol to 12.5 MG at the same time. I did research and the doctor also thinks the irregularity was due to the Decongestant and Lisinopril I had taken for 3 days as both have heart irregularity and palpitations as a side effect. I decided I want to get off the Toprol XL altogether and let my body go back to normal functioning. All my problems were brought once I started taking medicine and the only real problem I have is high blood pressure which I can control now with life style changes and natural supplements. I called the cardiologist's nurse and she said not to do anything until I see the doctor on December 18th. I had already decided to cut the dose in half to 12.5 MG on December 3rd anyway and the side effects got better, but then I had instance the other night after taking a spin class at the gym whereby my heart beat stayed up around 82 bpm for several hours and normally is 59 pbm. I also felt anxious and couldn't get settled to sleep real well. I read on the warning label that your not supposed to work out during the process of reducing the dosage so I guess I will have to stop working out until I'm off this stuff. I have been an exercise person for 31 years doing at least 5 hours of Cardio Exercise per week and then racing bicycles in the summer months doing 10-12 hours of Cardio Exercise. I really want off this drug so I reduced to 6.25 MG today and will stop working out I guess until I'm off. I feel a little shaky and feel sort of like I could faint if I did to much exertion since reducing to 6.25 MG today. I was wondering how long it take to get off this Toprol since I was only on it for 12 days at the 25 MG dosage and should I keep cutting the dosage and go down to 3.12 MG after a few more days and then eventually off after a few days at 3.12 MG? Then how long once I'm off should I wait to return to my rigorous exercise routine?

I am sitting here is shock as I read the posts here. I have been taking Toprol XL for about 5 years now. It was 50MG and went up to 100MG when I had some heart arrythmias. Except for some dizziness at first no other side effects were noticed. For some reason my cardiologist switched me to me metprolol. I am currently scheduled for colonoscopy, a look into my stomach as well as blood test and stool test and on a strict diet.. why?, because I have been having serious gastro problems for 2 months now. (Diarrea, gas, stomach pain, blood )I told m first gastro guy about my meds and he said Metoprolol would not cause it. Yet I have just read here and on a side affect site, that gastro problems happen to 5 out of 100 people!!! This problem started very soon after I switched meds. Yesterday I skipped m meds accident. I went 48 hours without meds. NO problems! I took m meds last night and this morning my stomach is in turmoil. Tomorrow I cut my meds in half. Then call my cardio guy and change back to Toprol. There is an obvious difference in the drugs.

I too am having many of the side effects listed on this site including chest pains, fatigue, shortness of breath, foggy head, dizziness, to name a few. I am wondering if anyone has had heartburn or an increase in heartburn while being on this drug. They have recently switched me from Toprol to the generic form, Metaprolol. More of these symptoms seem to have come on since switching to the generic. Any thoughts?

I starting taking toprol xl 25 mg in Feb 2007. My blood pressure was high because I was experiencing dizziness from a neck injury. I noticed right away muscle weakness around my knees but I thought it was because of my neck and the dizziness. I thought that I was locking my knees more because of afraid of falling. And increased dizziness. But again I assumed it was still from my neck. My neck pain got better but then the muscle weakness got so bad I bought a cane to walk around at work with. One week ago a finally begged the Doc to take me off this medication. I took 1/2 pill for 3 days and then went completely off. I have not started having hot flashes yet, but with the withdrawal I have had a hot flash. My muscle weakness in my legs is better, but not gone. I am still trying to find out how long it will take to get this awful drug out of my system. The doc was convinced it was the drug, and I am scheduled for more tests.

September 15, I first started taking Toprol XL 50 mg for an irregular heart
2007 beat. That was about 2.5 years ago. It didn't help me at
1:27 PM first so my Dr. upped it to 100mg. It helped for about a
year and a half before I began having diarrhea and loose bowels for over a year now. My doctor didn't seem too concerned about
that. At the same time I was taking 1500mg of Niacin a day. I thought
the loose bowels came from too much Niacin, so I asked the Dr. to take
me off that. That did not help me at all. I am seeiing my Dr. next week
I do hope I can get off of Toprol. I have other side effects as well, enlarged thyroid, dizziness, short term memory, depressed,sleepy. But I do mow the lawn without any fatigue. I am tired of the diarrhea every day 2 to 3 times a day. Thanks to everyone who has posted their side effects/ It helps to know others are having the same side effects I am with Toprol.

Hi i have just started Toprol-xl 25mg for only 2 days and already have some symptoms of light headed and dizzyness. Also heat flash. Just wondering if i should still take this drug for my extra heart beat.

Oh thank you people. I just signed in here today, at the advice of my husband- to check out Toprol- and see if any one else has had similar side effect. OMG, Everyone is saying the same thing- dizziness- dullness- no motivation, no energy- heart palpitations- some one mentioned their older mother has had vivid dreams, and you thought it might be Alzheimers- NO! I have had vivid extremely busy, cunfusing dreams, like I'm running from place to place-talking to all sorts of people- and it makes me wonder if that's why I also feel so exhausted and achy from head to toe every day- and never have left my house once all summer- which is so unlike me. I ,too thought I was in a depression- but after reading everyone else's replies- I see we are all in the same boat. I am 72- worked in the nursing profession, until I ruptured two discs in my spine and got nerve damage in my right leg- so I do know quite a bit about medical care. This med was given to me by a past Doctor which I did not trust- and finally changed Doctors- I just decided today- I am D.C.ing this med. Which is what the Dr. says when he wants it discontinued!! I will see my new Cardiologist-internist, and will advise him I can not take this any longer. Has anyone else had excessive itchiness, and flaming redness of the skin after taking this at night? I have severel times- and was taking a shower at 3 in the morning, I was itching and scratching and red all over- and clawing myself bloody- so I showered and used this OLAY CREME RIBBONS, WHICH LEAVES A SORT OF CREAMY LOTION ON THE SKING- IT HELPED SOME WHAT! Didn't mean to capitalize- I have no stock in Olay- Hah! I hope to fe4el much better in the morning by not taking my Toprol tonight- and maybe I won't have such radically busy, busy dreams. 38y.o F taking toprol 100mg once a day for hypertension x 15mths History of Hypothyroidism which is controlled w/ synthroid and closley monitored w/ lab work.
Experience weight gain, unable to lose weight w/ diet and exercise including w/ a nutrionist and personal trainer. Hairloss, lack of libido, chronic joint pain, swelling in hands and ankles/feet, back pain and/or muscle aches, lack of interest in everything, no energy. Major swelling after high sodium intake. Ear drainage, tingling of extremities especially in feet and fingers, visual disturbances. Blood Pressure is okay.
Has anyone experienced an improvement since they've stopped using toprol?

I'm a 56 year old woman. 5'4" 116. Very fit .Have hypothyroidism and take Synthroid.. Was diagnosed with high blood pressure (which I beleive is due to a too high dose of Synthroid) Was prescribed toprol, just 25 Mgs. Wow!! Was that a bad experience. With the first few days of taking it, began the Foggy brain, dizziness, no ability to concentrate.. no energy.. Head aches, joint pains. Complete lack of interest in doing much of any thing including sex!. Have became almost reclusive because I didn't feel confident interacting with people (I'm a VP of Sales.. not good for my job)! I was bumping into things.. Felt like I was on another planet.. Thought I was nuts... Great to have found this site Also.. Have gain 5 pounds that are not falling off since I stopped this med on my own after only 10 days.. YIKES! Who does this stuff work well for?

Dick...that was one of my complaints about Toprol. It caused me to have the most vivid and awful dreams of my life! It took me a long time to realize that the cause was the Toprol.

I was also taking Zestoretic with the Toprol. Yesterday my doc cut out the Zestoretic and decreased the Toprol to 25 mg/day because my BP was so low I was having spells of dizziness. I'll be interested if the dreams go away, too!

Wow..thanks for this web site! I'm taking 50mg of Toprol a day. I've gained 75 pounds...while on a diet! I have NEVER been this fat in my life. I've had problems with dizziness, tiredness, and trouble sleeping. I called the pharmacy and was told these are very rare problems. He said he would'nt blame the weight gain on Toprol. As far as wakeing up around 2am and not being able to go back to sleep, he said to take it in the morning and not at night. He said "if a person gets a hang nail, they have to list it as a possible side effect".
As I read the problems on this site, I see I'm not alone. What should I do? Can I quit taking this drug and how?

I have been on Toprol XL for 15 months for my BP. It worked beautiful on that . I take it in the evening and have not experienced any dizziness. I actually feel good on it. Was on Altace before Toprol and hated it. But I have gained 22 lbs. since on this med, and no matter what I do I cannot lose weight. My brother is also on Toprol and has gained 70lbs. in about 2yrs. I am going to my doctor this friday and am getting off this med.

When I was in hosiptal,because of heart attack, my blood presure had never higher than 104/60, but my cardi doctor put me on 25mg toprol , plavix ,lipitor and 500mg niacin and 325 Asprin after 1 week, I had rashes, racing
heart beat but pulse at 45-59 in average, BP average 85-46, both of my leg feel heavy, tingly, pain and short of breath on walking, lying down and going up stair, dizziness, sore everywhere in my back, neck , chest ( I thought , I am going to have another heart attacked). I was scared that I am going to be cripple. Now I am off toprol and Lipitor (which hurt me a lot). Be caution, my primary doctor agnor my compliant many times and just prescript me the anti itch cream, and don't care I almost got killed by the side effect, if I din not going to ER myself, I was in very much pain and terrible condition and staying in hosiptal for treatment again.

Has anyone here experienced dizziness, tightening of the throat, muscle aches, racing heart, nausea, from this medication. I started taking 50 mg. and am at 12.5 now but still experiencing these symptoms.

Just an update. I have weened off the toprol, and once I started doing 12.5 every other day, I felt much better. I have more energy, I have been able to start excercising again, and definitely have less dizziness. Although, I'm not back to my pre-Toprol energy levels, I have read that it does take a while to exit your system.

Heavy chest, dizziness, fatigue, anxiety. Now trying to go off and have horrible tremors, racing heart, hightened anxiety.

I have been taking toprol for about 6ix months. I have gained weight aobut 12 pounds and I have not changed my eating habits. I have dreams all night long it seems. I am short of breath. I am dizzy, althrough I have been brother with dizziness. My blood pressure is still high. I had to go from 50 mgs. to 25mgs due to how bid I have been feeling.

I now have a cough that I cannot get rid of. Has anyone else had the cough.

I have been on Toprol XL (25 mg/daily) for 6 months (F/41). I was really glad to come across this message board in a frantic search of "weight gain with Toprol XL". Have gained 10 pounds in these 6 months and for the life of me I cannot get any weight off, my body is just stuck where it is at. My problem is I have to lose weight since I am overweight about 40 pounds right now so this is so frustrating to me. At least I am not alone, thanks for posting your problems also with weight gain. I take Toprol for my fast beating heart, was having bad palps last January. Toprol does work well in keeping my B/P down (tends to be just a bit high) and the palps are non existent for me on this drug. I do have swollen ankles (at night) ok in the mornings. But the weight gain is really making me go crazy especially when I need to lose weight. This just isn't going to work so this morning I am cutting that pill in half and getting the heck off of it. I do find that if I stay away from sugar/caffeine my palps really don't bother me nearly as much. I went on it because the job I had was very stressful and brought back my palps again after not having them (as bad) for several years. I just hate those "fluttering" heart beats, they are hard to deal with and Toprol takes them away and keeps me "calmer" so I will miss Toprol for those effects, but not the weight gain! I have been taking Toprol for 2 1/2 years following bypass surgery. Some weakness has occurred, but I have bicycled 5,500 miles and even finished in the top five in a couple of amateur races during that time. I often have leg cramps, but have noticed taking a potassium supplement (or eating more bananas) and drinking more water seems to alleviate that problem. Other side effects include reduced sex drive and a need for more sleep and rest. When I don't get enough rest, I get so tired I can barely function. I am also taking Crestor and Avapro (the combination of which has caused even more side effects -- weakness, BP drops, dizziness, sharp muscle pains, sleeplessness, etc.)

have been taking toprol 25mg for only 5 days for rapid heart rate and feel worse on it then i did dealing with the rapid heart rate and occasional flutter. trip to the er told me i was fine. cardiologist and family practitioner want me to increase the dose to 50mg and tell me the following are not side effects though i am experiencing them: jolting surges of chest pain on the left side (never had before taking toprol), nausea and loss of appetite. i also have depression/anxiety, dizziness, insomnia. i hate the feeling of the medicine as it kicks in. they say if i take more i will feel better. they also prescribed and told me to take xanax for anxiety. last night i tried taking half dose to see how i feel. i don't feel better...feel worse. i am afraid i will be on this for life. i just want to be a normal person and feel normal. i can't work, can't function, and my husband can't deal with it anymore.

I have had dizziness for 2 1/2 years...when wlaking or sitting. Could it be the beta blockers? How long would I have to be off Toprol to determine if this is causing my severe dizzy condition. I also have arrhthmias...not often but the toprol was given to me for that. It might be effecting my equilibrium. Yes? No? Please answer. No doctor has been able to find the cause of the dizziness. All my blood tests come out just fine...and so do the CAT scans and MRIs. I have seen too many doctors...and lost faith in them. Sorry about that.

I have been on Toprol XL 50MG for 6 months for Right Ventrical Outflow Track Tach (RVOT) am 46yr male.

Side effects:

1. Weight gain (180 to 195) despite dieting
2. Tiredness
3. Very Low heart rate (Resting heart rate is now 40)
4. Just started having Vertigo (Extreme dizziness when sitting up)
5. Chest pains
6. Familiar Tremors have stopped (This is a benefit)

The RVOT symptoms have subsided but I'm not sure that it is worth it.

I have taken toprol for about a month and am refuseing to take it anymore my blood pressure was at 170/110 and im only 20 years old before taking toprol... I have experienced so many side effects i cnat even live a normal life. My anxiety has gone from barely having any to having terible panic attacks daily. I have experienced extreme back pain, tingling in my legs and arms, vomiting, dizziness and light headness. My cardiologist says it has nothing to do with my meds which i simply can not believe!!! If anyone knows anything else I can ask to take to help decrease my blood pressure please help!! inderal and other beta blockers all seem to have a negative effect on my body!! goodluck to everyone

very interesting as I read the above side effects people have experienced. I was put on toprol - l00mg two years ago. I have always been a healthy female = only going to the Dr. for yearly check-ups. Never having the flu, colds, and always low blood pressure. I was exposed to a chemical that immediately increased my blood pressure. Had a clean bill of Health with low blood pressure two weeks prior. I was put on Tropol 50 mg and then l00 mg. I had dizziness, tired, etc. but never related it to the possibility of the medicine and neither did my doctor. I was sent for tests for the dizziness and ended up with a pace maker. After reading the above side effects people have written in about - I wonder what actually created my problems. I always have dry mouth and dry eyes, which I never had before. The reason for pacemaker is if I should go into a faint spell it will kick in and not allow me to faint as I had three episodes of fainting. I also was given every test imaginable prior to the pacemaker. My heart and arteries are fine, cat scans, my heart beats are fine, all arteries flow properly. I now wonder about the medication.

I AM ON 150 MG PER DAY AND HAVE BEEN FOR ABOUT 2 1/2 YEARS. LATELY, THE DIZZINESS AND TIREDNESS AND LACK OF ENERGY HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE. I ALSO HAVE ACTUALLY PASSED OUT COLD TWICE IN THE LAST MONTH BECAUSE ALL OF THE SUDDEN I FELT EXTREMELY OVERHEATED AND BLACKED OUT. ANYONE ELSE HAVE THESE SYMPTOMS?

I'am taking Toprol XL 50 MG along with Hyzaar 50-12.5 for about 4 months. 2 months ago I started to have many side effects including dizziness,tired all the time,weak feeling,muscles weakened especially in knees,feeling like falling.extreme blurred vision and dry cough. My blood pressure was being helped down from the 170/85 range to around 130/65 range. I stopped taking the toprol and in 4-5 days I was feeling much better but my blood pressure went sky high again. I started taking the toprol but my blood pressure wouldn't go down again. I think I would rather risk the high blood pressure rather then the side effects.

I have been on Toprol for about a month, originally 50mg, steadily increased to 200. I did have the temporary dizziness, sleepiness, and "brainfog" that others have mentioned, but also extreme fluctuations in BP and heartrate. I have awakened in the middle of the night, sweating profusely, my heart beating rapidly, and feeling my pulse in every part of my body. A few hours later, I was so cold, that I couldn't get warm, no matter how much I covered up, and felt too weak to do anything about it. I have also awakened with large bruises that I didn't have the day before, and bleed profusely when scratched or cut. In the past few days, I have developed depression, and didn't know that it was a side-effect, until I got on the internet, and started reading other people's stories.

Muscular/joint pain , mainly in right shoulder and arm,along with dizziness, tired.I never had this pain in my right shoulder before I started this medication.It hurts so much I can barely use my right arm anymore for everyday skills.

52 yr old male-I was taking 100 mg and experienced
shortness of breath,weakness,dizziness,stomach bloating,
insomnia, and cold hands and feet. I cut back to 50 mg and
side effects have decreased. I am checking blood pressure
often and getting more exercise along with a better diet. So far no increase in blood pressure.

I'm a 54 year old woman and have been on 50 mg Toprol for 1 year. It's done great things to drop my blood pressure down to normal range. But I've experienced weight gain, muscle aches, aching feet, tiredness, lack of clarity when thinking, hot flashes, occasional nausea and occasional dizziness/light-headedness. I'm also on a mild dose of xanax which helps with nervousness which I guess is also associated with Toprol. My sex drive still remains strong though.

I am taking 100 mg Toprol for BP. I have experienced excessive itching, joint pain, lack of ambition, hard time driving because of dizziness and focusing of my eyes. I am 69 years old and have no sex drive and no interest in the things I should care about. I am going to my doctor to see if my old BP drug Diazide will be better for me. You can bet I'm going to get off Toprol

Have been on Toprol XL 100 mg for four months. Have had weitht gain, sleepyniess, exhaustion, severe itching, swelling of hands, feet and anckles, dizzyness, empared mental sharpness, arm and shoulder pain. Severe leg pain. Deep bone pain. No sex drive at all. I am haveing trouble getting up and down, and even walking. Calling doctor, at this rate I will be disabled soon. Haveing difficulty getting in and out of car.

I am 30 an just started taking toprol for high blood pressure 10 day ago. The first night i took it I almost pasted out. I thought it was just my bp changing. 3 days later i almost pasted out again and immediatly went to my family doctor. when i got there my bp was 203/130 the highest it had ever been. Of course they gave me more toprol. which did correct the high bp. I am having bad nightmares and mood swings. Dizziness, stomach grumbling, and zombie like feelings. I am going to stop taking it.

I am a 32 year old male who has been taking Toprol (50mg) for nearly six months. My doctor prescribe it to me for hypertension and to be honest I felt better without it. Before taking this med I felt strong and like a young man, now I feel like a frail old man. Never before in my life have I felt so sickly. I know my body, better than any doctor, and I'm sure it's the Toprol. Like many other posts I experience shortness of breath, chest pain, anxiety, deep muscle pain, and dizziness. I find it disturbing that a majority of the comments here are negative. The side effects of this drug are worse than any symptom I had before taking the drug.

I am male, 73. 3 months ago my doctor switched me from Cardizem to Toprol, which he said would be more beneficial. Since then I have experienced an ongoing, low-level, sense of nausea or dizziness. It is unpleasant, but not disabling. He said that it should disappear after more time. Has it disappeared for anyone else?

I took Toprol for 2 months and experienced depression, and severe anxiety. My doctor prescibed Xanax to relieve the anxiety, and it really helped. The problem was, I have never before taking this BP medication, ever, experienced either depression or anxiety. I, also, experienced chest pain very like a heart attack, but with no elivated BP, or dizziness. I weened myself off the Toprol, 4 months ago, and have experienced none of the above symptoms since! I have, since ceasing taking Toprol, taken a echo cardiogram with treadmill and my tests were not only normal, but I felt perfectly finely during the tests.

FATIGUE,MUSCLE ACHES,HEADACHES,DIZZYNESS...BEEN TAKING TOPORAL ABOUT 6 MONTHS NOW..DON'T KNOW IF SIDE EFFECTS IS TOPORAL OR NEXIUM

I have been taking Toprol 25mg for 2 years now , due to a mild heart attack, along with aspirin and Zocor. have experienced shortness of breath, times of dizziness, memory loss,weight gain and heartburn. I'm not really happy with the shortness of breath, especially when doing mild excersice or mowing the yard. I will be weeenieing myself off for a while to see if I can get back to my old self.

I am a 33-year-old male. I take 25 mg of Toprol along with Avapro and Hydrochlorothizide and Lipitor (whew!). Didn't have much of any side effects UNTIL I started Toprol. A lot of fatigue, some dizziness, kind of a "heavy" feeling. Pretty much everything else discussed here. BP and HR are right on track, though.
