Hi all! I have recently started to have a very strange feeling and thought I would post here to see if anyone else can elaborate on it.
I switched from private healthcare to the VA system in March 2008 and the MD at the VA immediately switched me from Toprol XL 100mg per day to Norvasc ( Amlodipine Besylate) 5mg, a generic version and from Zetia 10mg to Zocor. This is mainly due to the fact that the VA does not have the Toprol XL or the Zetia in their pharmacy.
I am a very active person, work out 3 times per week, play tournament level racquetball and generally stay very active. I was feeling fine on this medication for almost 3 years with the only side effect being a little light-headed feeling with hard physical activity. Approximately 2-3 weeks after changing meds I started to get this lumpy feeling in my chest and then it started to progress into an air hunger feeling which felt like my breath was being taken away for a split second. I called the MD at the VA and requested to go back on metoprolol tartrate, which is what the VA has in place of the metoprolol succinate (Toprol XL). The air gasp feeling has only gotten worse and with any excertion I become tired now and start to get the gaspy feeling. Very scary. When it started to get real bad one evening I called 911 and went to the emergency room. Tests came back "ridiculously normal" the ER MD stated. Went back to the VA and the same MD, who doesn't listen, says I am under stress and prescribed me Paxil. I am completely lost as to what to do. I am going in to have another EKG and a holter monitor put on as well as a stress test.
Does anyone have any advice for me? I am desperate to get this resolved as fast as I can. Feel terrible lately and the MD doesn't seem to be listening to me.
Help!

I'm a 43 y/o male, on Toprol-Xl (25mg) and Diovan(80-mg) for high blood pressure. I've been on Diovan since it hit the market (no side effects at all) but recently developed a fast heart rate with no explaination. I saw a cardiologist and he put me on 25mg of Toprol-XL once each day. It's been 7 weeks and I'm fairly well adjusted with few minor side effects (slow pulse, cold extremities, weird chest feelings when the Toprol starts to wear off) and a major side effect (lack of sleep and weird dreams).
I read an article that Toprol-XL is time released and the medication has it's peak affect 8-hours after taking the dose. I was taking the medication with dinner, but would then wake up at 3:00 am, wide awake, couldn't fall back to sleep. I now take the medication with lunch and my sleep patterns have improved considerably. My incredibly, sometimes scary, dreams have tapered off too. My blood pressure is picture perfect (usually 115-125 over 70 to 80) and the bursts of rapid heartbeats have stopped altogether (I had an echo stress test, echocardiogram, blood work, 3 EKG's) and all were normal. My cardiologist said all my side effects are normal and that if i couldn't tolerate them he would switch my beta blocker.

I have many of the same reactions to this med that I have read on this site. My sister is on this med and we began comparing symptoms, which were many of those listed here..total energy drain, dizzy, unable to concentrate or even focus, depressed. I feel like I can't get a full breath in my lungs and I find myself sighing a lot, which does get more air into my lungs. It is hard to describe but it is a very bad feeling that I am slightly dizzy, slightly nauseous all the time. No ambition, staying in bed more and more because I just feel bad most of the time.
I stayed on this med for four months trying to see if I would eventually get over these feelings. Didn't happen. This week my Dr. try changing me to Cozaar for my HBP so I am in the process of weaning myself off Metroprolol. I was only taking 25 mg 2Xday so I cut them in half and take twice a day. I can already tell a difference in my energy and general feeling of well being. Dr said after one week of half dose, to stop completely and take only the Cozaar. I hope this works. I appreciate all the input on this topic here.

I have been on toprol-XL for aprox. 1 + years. I chose to take this medication at night because of massive headache's. I also have most of the symptoms that everyone on this site has. I am going to stop this medication immediately. Have no clue how I am going to feel or what the concenquences are going to be. Hopefully no more massive headache's, and rapid weight loss. those are my two complaints regarding this medication. Thank you for this space to speak my peace. Patricia age 61

Has anyone else had trouble with heavy and/or thick menstrual flow while taking this medication? I am 40 years old and have never had this problem prior to taking Toprol.
I have also experienced the feelings of lethargy, as well as rapid weight gain and bizarre dreams.

I have been on Toprol for approx 5 months. Since i started taking it I have bee awaking several times a week gasping for air and having problems staying asleep. I only take half a pill of a 25 mg dose daily. Was taking at night because of the drawsinness and disconfort and today I started taking it in the morning. Not feeling well. I read all the side effects this medicine cause and the warnings that goes with it and was overwhelmed by these. I am calling my doctor to ask him to take me off this med. The feelings of waking up, confused and needing oxigen are very bad. It feels as though I am going to pass out. I am having a sleep study done this month to rule out other issues. Please give me any advice available.

having been taking toprol for nearly two years. This drug was presecribed to help with blood pressure and cardiomyopothy hypotrophy. Started out with 100mg per day and was advised to increase to 200mg per day/ morining and evening. My morning dose is taken with 180mg Verapamil. Primary physician just added nifedapine. I stopped the toprol regime for about 6 days and ended up in the hospital for about 4 days. My heart started racing and got up to 180bpm. My cardiologist stated that I should have never stopped the toprol. I would like to come off this medication. Does anyone have any suggestions. I don't not want to go through that rapid heart beat situation again. has anyone experienced such a heart rate based on stopping the use of toprol. I am now back on 100mg of it in the a.m. with 180 of verapamil and an aspirin. My evening dose is 100mg of toprol, 10mg of crestor and Niaspin 500mg as a nightime dose. This seems like it is so much medicine. I hate the feelings that come with this. Would love to have some feedback so that I can resume a much better life. Sex drive is low as well and I am only 49 year old black american male.

I am 30 an just started taking toprol for high blood pressure 10 day ago. The first night i took it I almost pasted out. I thought it was just my bp changing. 3 days later i almost pasted out again and immediatly went to my family doctor. when i got there my bp was 203/130 the highest it had ever been. Of course they gave me more toprol. which did correct the high bp. I am having bad nightmares and mood swings. Dizziness, stomach grumbling, and zombie like feelings. I am going to stop taking it.

My Toprol has been upped to 100mg daily plus my doctor also added Maxzide, which is a diuretic. I have to take my Toprol at night due to extreme fatigue, become dizzy upon awakening, have short term memory loss, feel as though I am in a fog at times, have lost the mental "sharpness" that I used to have and seem to have lost my feelings. My boyfriend is upset because I don't seem to have an interest in him anymore, and to be honest, on this medicine I really don't have an interest in him or anything else. The only plus is that I used to have pre-menstrual migraines every month and since the Toprol was increased, I don't have them anymore. The depression is making me lose out on life tho, and I plan on talking to my doctor about changing it.

OK FOLKS -HERE'S A GOOD ONE FOR YA- Just over a year ago I was on a heart transplant list. Today my heart function is normal and I am off ALL HEART MEDS. Even after finding out my heart function level was normal I was still living a nightmare for some unexplained reason. After MONTHS of tests and everyone telling me I was nuts a neurologist finally found out I was having seizure activity. Funny how my "seizure activity" feels EXACTLY how I felt when they increased my beta blocker dosage. I'm telling all of you.. This beta blocker helps some but they are burying their mistakes. I now know all of my ER trips, only to have them laugh and have them send me back home, were do to seizures caused by beta blockers while I had heart failure. I'm lucky to be alive.... and now that my heart function is good I have to fight this seizure BS. *REMEMBER THIS - Only YOU know what your body is telling you.. LISTEN TO IT! But do be careful.. You can't just stop taking a beta blocker.. Good luck all cuz we sure need it!
