I took Toprol for almost 2 years then in Aug generic came out Metoprolol and I switched over. I was taking 25mg. After a few weeks, I noticed numbness in my index finger and middle finger. Then it happened in other hand. Doc said I had tendinitis in one hand and slept wrong on the other...I was also depressed and having panic attacks. From the onset of taking Toprol my sleep was disturbed, but thought it was age related. Once I went on Metoprolol insomnia set in. Then my feet went cold and numb and my arms were so heavy and tingly and my joints hurt. My right shin hurt to touch as well. Vision was cloudy and had trouble adjusting to light changes. Finally it dawned on my that the changes occurred about the time I started the generic. I went back to doc and he pretty much told me I was crazy, prescribed Xanax and a session with a psychiatrist! He switched me back to Toprol and I felt no better then he switched me to
Atenolol with same result. By this time, my chest was on fire and I had extreme difficultly breathing. Called doc and he told me to stop cold turkey. I did and thought I was going to die one day. Throat closed up blood pressure soared. He stopped me on Nov 11 or 12th. I have been on nothing. Blood pressure is not leveled. When I first sit down it is like 140/93. If I wait a few minutes it goes down to 120/80 or a little lower. I was expecting to feel a lot better by this point in the game. I still have numbness in my pinky and ring finger and in my toes. If I take Advil it lessens to where it is not so bothersome. Anyone know how long this stuff takes to get out of your system? I am shopping for a new doc since mine know things I am a hypo. I am a 39 yr old female with no other health issues. Was originally put on for stress related palps.

I had wondered if it was just me and have found out otherwise from this site and others. I was put on Toprolxl 11/07 1x day for hypertension. The stomach problems began but I persevered and since I had been taken of my diuretic believed the bloating on my hands was because of thant not the Toprol. Anyway my BP and pulse rate got higher and higher then the doctor gave me back my diuretic and my dose of Toprolxl doubled to twice a day.I noticed that my fingers would still swell after toprol and the stomach--gas, constipation got worse. Today I called my MD and said I wanted off it. Am scared to eat anything. Feel tired and have dry mouth, stuffy nose. All this drug has done is cause misery

I just started taking Toprol today for tachycardia, increased BP, which my dr says may me hyperthyroidism. I have been waking up at 3 am for days with a racing heart. No racing heart now with Toprol XL 50 mg, but my fingers feel swollen and I can't sleep. I feel short of breath and my muscles hurt. After reading all of the comments, I will call the dr tomorrow and ask for something else. This drug is scary.

I'm taking toprol-XL 100 mg. 1 time a day for high bp and fast heart rate. I would wake up some nights out of the blue with my heart beating so fast it feels like it was going to jump out of my chest.I'm also taking Benicar HCT for about three and a half months now. I have been very tired all the time, I also feel like something is in my chest sometimes. When breathing out I hear a rattling sound in my chest but can't cough to clear it up and I have gotten hoarse. sometimes I can be seating or lying down on the sofa and start to feel really bad all of a sudden for no reason and my pressure goes up really high. My pressure have not been stable since, it has even been low as 95/72. When it shoots up for no reason it is 163/113.I also have jumping in my fingers and muscles, Has anyone experience that.

I have been taking Topral xl for 3 months due to hearing heart pulsing in ear. very nerve racking. I t has stopped untill I lay down at night, then it starts up most of the time. If I hold my fingers onside of neck in a certain spot it will stop. Am also taking xanax. Dr. told me he wanted me to get fit, so sameday I started topral I started walking treadmill 1/2 hr. a day. Did that for 7 weeks every day and gained weight. Also vision is very blurred after I read a few minutes. I take 50 mg. of hctz along with the topral. I was taking 50 mg. of topral and have cut it back to 25 I am not gaining any more and my eyes are not as blurred when I read. Dr. was not concered with these side effects.Since cutting back The pounding or pulsating has not gotten worse as of yet. Does this sound like I am on the right track for my stmptoms?

I have been on Toprol for a year and a half. Four months ago, I was taking 200 mg of Toprol per day. I was tired all of the time. I would have bazaar, nightmare type dreams. My fingers would go numb every morning and sometimes during the day, such that I could barely hold a fork. I would get dizzy easily and would get short of breath easily. When I was downsized from my job, my blood pressure began to decrease. I am on 50 mg per day now. I am still more tired than usual, still get dizzy or short of breath more easily than normal. The nightmares and the numbness in my fingers has disappeared. I am going to ask my doctor if I can try something else to reduce my blood pressure. I am tired of being tired.

I have taken metoprolol for several years starting while I was serving in the army (late twenties). Now I am 37 years old. The first problem I encountered was lethargy, which forced me to cut it in half and take at different times of the day. But the worst problem by far is numbness in the hands. just holding a pen or pencil will cause fingers to go numb. I am a guitar player but that is quickly becoming an impossible task. It just recently occured to me that a drug change may reverse this- if anyone has an anecdote please contact me, thank you.

I was prescribed 50 m of Toprol. After taking it for almost a year, I produced muscle pain in back of hands and the tops of my feet and toes. fingers feel arthritic. Lifting elbows have limited range of motion without pain.
Doctor finds nothing wrong. I know my body and that it is the Tropol. I want to get off of this stuff ASAP. I have been taking every other day until my next doc appointment.
Don't they study these drugs before prescribing them to people? Being in this kind of pain from head to toe - I wonder what it could be doing to the muscles of the heart.

Weight gain, exhausted, sleepy, pain in joints - mostly big toe and fingers, someone just told me it is the gout and they have the same thing.

I lost 30 pounds on Weight Watchers in 2005 - lost it in 6 weeks (on the proper diet) because of my insanely fast metabolism. Shortly after that, I was put on 25 mg of Toprol XL for PACs/PVCs. Upped that to 50 mg after I started getting migraines. Gained 55 pounds in the process, though I tore a hamstring in a couple of places and put a lot of the weight loss up to months of inactivity.
Then I started back on WW and tried to lose. Did everything just right--nothing. Added exercise and adjusted my points. Still nothing. Finally googled "toprol metabolism" and found tons of people complaining of the same types of problems.
I finally got down to 12.5 mg of Toprol and my body has adjusted to it, and in the last 2 weeks I've dropped 10 pounds. I'm debating going off it altogether, since there's nothing wrong with my blood pressure, and since lowering it clearly helps.
Note to anyone who tries this - every time I lower the dose I tend to gain a little weight (it's mostly water weight--I bloat up when I lower it for some reason) while my body adjusts, but it always comes off. So if you lower your dose (with doctor's permission, of course), don't be disheartened if you gain at first. You'll get there.
