I started taking Toprol 4 months after having my baby. I never had High Blood Pressure until I was 2 months pregnant and It continued throughout my pregnancy. Four months after giving birth my BP kept creeping up so I went to my doctor and she prescribed 25mg of Toprol. I have been taking Toprol for a year and a half, I have gained over 20 pounds, I have felt like I have been walking in a fog, loss of concentration, been diagnosed with depression, I have slept at night but not feeling rested. I went off the meds for an allergy test and immediately realized that I was sleeping better and feeling rested, so I was monitoring my BP and It has been okay so I have stayed off the meds. I never realized that my problems could have been linked to this med until I went off the Toprol. My question is how long before the weight will come off. I was working out 5 days a week and watching what I ate for over 2 months while on the Toprol and no change. I am hoping that since I am off of Toprol I will start dropping a few pounds soon.

I have many of the same reactions to this med that I have read on this site. My sister is on this med and we began comparing symptoms, which were many of those listed here..total energy drain, dizzy, unable to concentrate or even focus, depressed. I feel like I can't get a full breath in my lungs and I find myself sighing a lot, which does get more air into my lungs. It is hard to describe but it is a very bad feeling that I am slightly dizzy, slightly nauseous all the time. No ambition, staying in bed more and more because I just feel bad most of the time.

I stayed on this med for four months trying to see if I would eventually get over these feelings. Didn't happen. This week my Dr. try changing me to Cozaar for my HBP so I am in the process of weaning myself off Metroprolol. I was only taking 25 mg 2Xday so I cut them in half and take twice a day. I can already tell a difference in my energy and general feeling of well being. Dr said after one week of half dose, to stop completely and take only the Cozaar. I hope this works. I appreciate all the input on this topic here.

I have been on Toprol for a year and a half. Four months ago, I was taking 200 mg of Toprol per day. I was tired all of the time. I would have bazaar, nightmare type dreams. My fingers would go numb every morning and sometimes during the day, such that I could barely hold a fork. I would get dizzy easily and would get short of breath easily. When I was downsized from my job, my blood pressure began to decrease. I am on 50 mg per day now. I am still more tired than usual, still get dizzy or short of breath more easily than normal. The nightmares and the numbness in my fingers has disappeared. I am going to ask my doctor if I can try something else to reduce my blood pressure. I am tired of being tired.

I have been on toprol for four months. After a stent was put in my heart, I had very hard time adjusting and developed panic attacks and added xanax to the mix. After two month I had to stop taking Zocar because side effects. Still I was always exusted, mini black out spells, light headed during exercise, cold hands, no tolerance to cold weather, palpatations and memory loss. One day I was looking foe my cell phone in the office for ten minutes before I realized that I was talking on it. I was always leaving things behind and had to check I had everything I needed. But I knew things were not right when my BP range was 110/98 over 68-60 with a pulse of 56 to 39. I believe it is called bradycardia. Needless to say my doctor took me off the Toprol and the Zocar. After one day there is a 100% difference. I needed to do this months ago.

I took Toprol XL 25 mg for three months after my doc said my BP was really high one day. I experienced horrible side effects---too tired, lethargic, depressed, no desire to do normal tasks, sort of like a walking coma. My BP fell to the 110/65 range. I switched to 12.5 mg for four months, and that's when I developed debilitating BP spikes over 200/110 every month--I had never had a BP spike before in my life. They were caused by the lower dose of Toprol, I believe. Changing to 6.25 mg last week to get off was even worse with the surges, but I felt great and had some energy!!! My doctor put me on Clonidine for the spikes and things are going well. Some Internet posts say that even at tiny doses of Toprol, it can take 3 weeks to get the spikes to stop!! Such a nasty drug! Ask your doc if something else will work for you, and consider Clonidine for that period right after stopping it. After I detox from Toprol, I am not sure I will even need BP medication because it is so low and I am losing weight, eliminating salt, etc. Good luck!

I have been taking Toprol for about a year for heart palputations. Over the last few months, I began to experience a tired feeling. In the last four months, it has gotten worse and now I can't do my husehold chores. I have a trembling feeling in my arms, legs, and upper body.
I also experenced muscle aches. That has ceased since I have been off the Lipitor. I have had numerous blood work done and all has come back in the normal range. I have seen a Neorologist and the tests he gave me were also normal. My guess is, it is both the Lipitor and Toprol causing my problem. I am 68 years of age, always been on the go and a fun loving person. I would like to be that person again.
