I am a 38 year old female and was put on Toprol XL for anxiety/rapid heart beat/stress. I have experienced weight gain, hair loss/thinning, tiredness, walking up/down a flight of stairs takes all the energy I've got and I need to sit and catch my breath, memory loss, loss of sex drive, gas/bloating problems, lack of activity due to fatigue. After I began reading these comments I can't believe that all the symptoms I'm having is due to this medication. As I was reading everything was coming back to me and I kept saying to myself, "That's exactly how I feel!" Just like most of these people! I'm not alone! Thank God for these posts! I'm going to stop taking this medication, gradually of course. I'll have to deal w/my anxiety/stress in other ways.....Prayer!

This website may not have saved my life, but it has certainly saved my sanity. Beginning in May 2007 I was prescribed Toprol XL for a supposed heart condition. I was instructed to begin with 50 mg per day and go to 100 mg per day after 10 days. Since I already had the 50 mg tablets, I simply started taking 2 of them together when I raised the dosage. On July 25 I ran out of the 50 mg tabs and filled a prescription for 100 mg tabs. Immediately upon starting the 100 mg tabs I began experiencing side effects which increased in severity daily. By Monday July 30 I was convinced I was losing my mind. Then I discovered this website, and read that many other people had suffered in the same way. What I have trouble grasping is why the same dosage had different effects. I tolerated the 100 mg/day dose just fine when taking 2 50 mg tabs, but the 100 mg was dreadful. I've checked the pills, and both the 50 mg and 100 mg are Astra-Zeneca products, not generic. The markings, shape and size are consistent with 100 mg tabs, so I haven't been inadvertently given an overdose. I immediately backed off the dosage, and am gradually going to reduce and stop the medication. I urge anyone who is having these problems not to stop at reporting them here, but also to contact Astra-Zeneca at www.astrazeneca.com, and to report them to the FDA's Medwatch website, www.fda.gov/medwatch. It may seem fruitless to contact Astra Zeneca, but they need to be made aware of these problems.

I have been taking toprol xl for approximately 9 mos. It was givien to me for rapid heart beat. My dosage has been doubled twice so that I am on 50 mg. I hate this medicine. I still have some rapid heart beat, I wake up every two hours at night, my legs hurt, and I have gained 20 lbs. I also wonder if it is this medicine that makes me sweat profusely. When I am doing yard work, or anything else in the summer heat, the water just pours off of me. I have never been a heavy sweater and I am out of doors all of the time. I want to get off of this stuff. Can I wean myself off by lowering the dosage a week at a time?

Hello to you all. I have been on Toprol XL for 8-10 months. I have "palpitations" which is why I was placed on this med. Also a diagnosis of Mitral Valve Prolapse. My doctor told me that the MVP can trigger the palpitations and that Toprol is the drug of choice. It helped for a few days. I felt like a new person at first. Then the palpitations gradually started to come back. I have gained 10 lbs. I am 50 years old and assumed that my wt gain was menopause. Now I think that is NOT the answer. I am an RN and I intend to wean myself off of the Toprol after reading the messages here! Why do I need to keep taking a medicine that is causing me to get fat and is NOT controlling my symptoms? Good luck to you all.

Multiple side effects from low dose of toprol. Severe depression and mood swings, panic attacks, tired all the time, brain fog, dry mouth. I have been reducing my dose gradually. Things are improving. This is a bad drug!

A pharmacist heard my breathing and told me I was over medicated. My doctors prescribed 20/12.5 Benicar, olmesmartan, twice a day for systemic hbp and Toprol once a day for pulmonary hypertension. I gradually stopped taking the Benicar because I could barely function, felt like I had been beaten down all day, had the sharp pains from one point to another and couldn't remember anything short term. I'm also allergic to sulfa which is an ingredient in olmesmartan. I'm only taking Toprol. I feel 200% better. The "charlie horses" aren't nearly as bad and the sharp pains and muscle tenderness are gone. My short term memory is better as well. I drink lots of water and take a potassium supplement. As a result, I retain much less fluid.

had tremensous weight gain over a period of 1 year gained 30 pounds. Also expereinced joint and muscle pains and palpatations. I asked the doc to take me off. He agreed. And I am doing it gradually. I went from 50mg to 10 (the lowest he says).

I am working on other ways to control pressure and its working. The doc encouraged me to meditate and now I do throughout the day while monitoring my pressure. I haven't lost the weight yet - but at least I can rest better. Still have the soreness in arms legs and feet. Hopefully this will go away.

I am a 47 year old male. Taking Vasotec 20mg,Norvasc 10mg,was taking toprol 50mg but stopped gradually. Now am totally off toprol and will never go back on it, replaced with hydrochlorothiazide 25mg. Its been about a week since I stoped toprol.
The only real side effect I had was my sex drive and performance. The effect was devastating, really depressed me bigtime. I am slowly geeting function back but its very slow. Does anyone know how long it will take to get back to normal in this area???
Other slight side effects where sleeplessness, tired, stomach problems, bloating.

Took 100mg for several years. Began to workout program to drop weight. BP dropped, I began taking 50mg. Lost more weight, BP dropped, I gradually weaned myself off. Day two - off the med, heart rate went from normal 70 to 110 resting. I also developed a bad rash and pimples on my back during the last part of the process. I am back taking 25mg, trying to wean myself off again.
