I was given Metoprolol, a generic for Toprol-XL several months ago, for high blood pressure. It was prescribed after I was determined to be allergic to Lisinopril. ( It caused a cough that lasted 3 months; I sounded like a TB patient.) Anyway, I have been taking Effexor for years, for anxiety attacks. Now that I take Metoprolol along with the Effexor, I am so tired and drained all the time, that I am contemplating quiting work. I go to the grocery, come home and lie down. I can't seem to have energy to breath correctly. My Dr. won't believe that this has anything to do with meds. I have now developed blood and mucous in my stools, diarrhea, and very urgent BMs. This all started after taking these two meds in combination for about 4 months.

60 yr old/young female: I started generic toprol (metoprolol 50mg xr) yesterday (11/22/07). Took about 3:00 PM. The next morning around 6:00 AM, I had a hot flash that equated to one you would have if you had taken niacin. Body was burning and I was sweating. Looked in the mirror to see if I was flushed, because of the severity of the hot flash I thought my body would be totally red. It wasn't. I called my pharmacist to report this event. He researched and found no evidence of such. He did say that it did not rule out the possibility that it was caused by the Toprol. Asked me to keep him posted as his customers were the ones that helped him be able to report side effects to other. Well I found this site and low and behold I have read of the hot flashes and all of the other problems. I will not be taking this medication. I am not a pro medication person anyway and related that to my dr, but at some point you feel you have to have trust in someone. I don't trust medications. I know at some point in my life I will probably have to take something, but not Toprol. Sounds as though it will cause more problems than it will cure. Thanks so much for your input. It will prevent me from having to wean myself off this mess. Oh yeah, I was also feeling the depressed, anxiety mentioned. Not at a high level , but just knew I wasn't myself. That was after just one dose. I can't imagine how it would have progress. I feel very blessed.

Just started taking 25mg toprol in the last month, I have been experiencing severe hot flashes and night sweating. Not sure if this is from the toprol.

I starting taking toprol xl 25 mg in Feb 2007. My blood pressure was high because I was experiencing dizziness from a neck injury. I noticed right away muscle weakness around my knees but I thought it was because of my neck and the dizziness. I thought that I was locking my knees more because of afraid of falling. And increased dizziness. But again I assumed it was still from my neck. My neck pain got better but then the muscle weakness got so bad I bought a cane to walk around at work with. One week ago a finally begged the Doc to take me off this medication. I took 1/2 pill for 3 days and then went completely off. I have not started having hot flashes yet, but with the withdrawal I have had a hot flash. My muscle weakness in my legs is better, but not gone. I am still trying to find out how long it will take to get this awful drug out of my system. The doc was convinced it was the drug, and I am scheduled for more tests.

I have been taking toprol for almost 2 months and have experienced most of the side effects mentioned here. I have myasthenia gravis and after severe allergic reactions to many medications. After trying several different meds for hypertension, my doctor prescribed 25 mg of topral.

The strange headaches and dizziness began immediately as well as fatigue, blurred vision and body heat totally unlike hot flashes. Feels like i am on fire when i touch my flesh.

The toprol affected my muscles almost as bad as lisinopril causing breathing difficulties and weakness in my leg and neck muscles to the point where i had to stay in bed for most of the day.

Toprol is a beta blocker and can sometimes cause difficulties for myasthenics but i was told that once i had been taking the medication for awhile the side effects would likely disappear.

Well they got worse and last night i had a myasthenic crisis and will be talking to my doctor about a different medication.

The problem with prescriptions is that most doctors dont have time to monitor their patients on new prescriptions and insurance doesnt support medication education for preventative maintenance so meds end up sometimes putting patients in life threatening situations.

There has to be a solution.

Hello, I've been on 50mg of Toprol XL for about two months, and have had a lot of hot flashes--I mean I just can't tolerate the heat at all! Also, if I am doing any type of work that takes any exersion, like lifting boxes (I'm preparing to move) I get so hot and sweaty! I am unable to take any other type of blood pressure medication due to having had severe allergic reactions to them, so I am stuck on the beta blockers. I also seem to have a significant decrease in my sex drive (mind wants to, but body doesn't), which is difficult because I just got married. I have also had a significant change in my weight - gained a lot, which is a bit strange for me. I am now trying to increase my exercise and also watch my diet. I am 45 years old and my blood pressure, at it's worst was like 202/120. It's down to like 140/90, so it's better... Acupuncture was helping for a while, but not enough...

When an ophthalmologist friend heard that my PCP prescribed 50 mg/day for PCV, he warned me to watch out for depression. I experienced the typical nightmares during my first weeks on this medication. I allso experienced such tiredness that just the thought of the effort it would take to move from one room to another was practically overwhelming. I asked my PCP for permission to reduce dosage to 25 mg and later to 12.5 mg (lowest available). I understand withdrawal from this drug, like HRT, must be reduced slowly (allow several weeks between changes in dosage). I continue to experience great bouts of sleepiness during the daytime and insomnia at night. Headaches, weight gain, pain shooting from ball of feet into all toes when I walk, giving me the sensation that all toes are on fire (like blisters), wanting to claw at my skin from a sensation of itching, and periodic blurred vision are on my list of complaints. I also thought I'd made it through hot flashes but now I find myself dealing with huge wringing wet series of flashes 24/7. I don't want to forget the shortness of breath that wakes me often during the night and the dizziness that periodically comes out of nowhere when I bend over to pick up something or move too quickly from a sitting position. I can't tell you the number of times I've brought these symptoms to the attention of my PCP and each time I'm given the impression that because I'm female in the final stages of menopause (10 years and counting), it's mostly all in my head. The only other items I knowingly place in my system are B-12 time release 1000/day due to removal of several inches of my ileum (the body's manufacturing source for B-12) which housed the remains of my shattered appendix and a periodic aspirin. Go figure!

I'm a 54 year old woman and have been on 50 mg Toprol for 1 year. It's done great things to drop my blood pressure down to normal range. But I've experienced weight gain, muscle aches, aching feet, tiredness, lack of clarity when thinking, hot flashes, occasional nausea and occasional dizziness/light-headedness. I'm also on a mild dose of xanax which helps with nervousness which I guess is also associated with Toprol. My sex drive still remains strong though.

I am a 72 year old male. I had bypass surgery in August 2004. Doctor put me on 25mg of Toprol. About 2 months ago I started having severe hot flashes and cold sweats during the day and night. Have had all types of blood tests - doctor does not know what is causing this. He just put me on antibotics for 3 weeks. I have also been nauseated a lot.
Could Toprol be causing my problems?

I have feet and leg cramps, don't sleep well, loss of energy, weight gain, no concentration at all and always feel like I need a nap. I'm cold all the time and now I'm having hot flashes. I've been on Toprol xl for 4 months. The only good thing is I don't have irregular heart beats any more. I had a heart attack on December 13,2003.
