I'm 22 years old and I have been on Yasmin for 3 years. The first year it was fine, but the next year I began getting panic attacks which I never even believed in until I had one myself. I've had severe anxiety that is uncontrollable and doesn't allow me to sleep at night. Let's not even talk about the emotional mood swings during my period. My boyfriend knows when it's that time of the month because I'm not myself. I will cry over things that would never make me cry in a million years. I'm mean and moody and then 20 minutes later I feel bad, but then I'm crabby again. Weight gain has not been a problem for me only about 3-5 pounds, but my breasts did go from a large B to a D. My boobs definitely do not fit my body. I have noticed a lot of hair fall but I just thought it was normal. I too have had problems with my potassium levels as I would get leg cramps in the middle of the night so I began drinking Gatorade and eating bananas every morning which has helped. I love being on birth control because it helps me plan accordingly, but I just don't feel like myself anymore. I am always hungry and am never full. I literally have to tell myself out loud that I'm done eating because it doesn't trigger for me. I have had a stomach ache nearly everyday of being on the pill. I became addicted to TUMS which only made it worse. I thought it was stress related which it might be, but I literally do not go to the bathroom for 4 or 5 days and it is soooo painful. Another thing is that I have no sex drive. I really have to prepare myself for it otherwise sex does not even occur to me. My boyfriend thinks I'm not attracted to him, but I AM! We just moved in together and you would think it was "freedom" but I'm just motivated to have sex. This is not normal for a 22 year old healthy female with an extremely hot man.
Anyway, I just went to the doctor and told her I was interested in Yaz. She gave me a few sample packs which I will begin next week. I'm hoping for the best and I truly do believe that birth control is a trial and error process. Everyone's bodies are different and you need to find the one that works best for you! I will write again once I know how Yaz works out.

My daughter is 17 and has been taking Yasmin for 5 months. She has gained a lot of weight, she has headaches all the time she shakes in the legs like she is going to fall, her back hurts and calf hurt all the time, she is tired all the time no matter if she just got up from a nap or 8 hours of sleep, she would also get upset and nasty, sometimes depressed which is not at all my daughter. She always has been nice and consider it of others. She would not hurt a fly. She has always been out going and she would always try to go the extra mile to help someone. Everything change went she started Yasmin. I call the doctor and they told me over and over again those are not side effects of Yasmin. Well I took my daughter off them and after a few I days I could see a improvement.

I started taking Yasmin on Monday April 21st, and by Wednesday morning I wanted off of it. I started getting really bad leg cramps all the time, I feel dizzy all the time, I have trouble concentrating, and I have trouble breathing. The worst part is that I have heart palpitations now. My heart feels all butterfly-like or it feels like it's beating really slowly really hard. I just spoke with my doctor, and she says to stop taking it immediately.
After reading this website I see I'm not the only one affected by horrible side-effects from Yasmin.

Hey, girls.
I'm 24 years old and i've been taking Yasmin for three months and stopped a month ago.
I must admit that at first (for 3 weeks) my mood was almost better than normal but after that...
I had mood swings, slept for 12 hours and was still feeling druged up, numbness in my hands and legs (so that i would wake up during the night because of it), absolutely no desire for sex and the pills dried me out (you know where:) ), had very poor orgasms, was too emotional and sensitive and i would cry and be hurt for peanuts. Oh, and my migraine got really really bad.
Now, after a month without them my sex drive is back (and the ability to do it without a lubricant too), i dont wake up in the middle of the night and my mood is so improved that even my boyfriend made a comment the other day about how happier i got lately.
But sadly...those pills were my best shot, so i guess i'm back on those sweet little latex thins again.
I hope it helps anyone.
I apologize for potential grammar/spelling mistakes, i can guarantee you i dont make those mistakes in my language :)

I have been on Yasmin for about 1 1/2 yrs. I had previously been on other birth control pills but after the birth of my 2nd child, I had a lot of spotting when I went back on that same pill. My OB/GYN recommended Yasmin so I gave it try. It seemed to work well but now I have experienced certain symptoms in the last 3-6 months that lead me to believe they may be related to Yasmin. I have migraines several times per week as well as regular headaches everyday that will not subside by taking a pain reliever. I have painful swelling in one finger of my left hand that will not go away. My legs and arms seems to ache all of the time and I have painful breasts constantly. I am only 38 yrs old and have 2 young children but sometimes I feel like a really old woman! I decided today, after thinking about the possible connection between these symptoms, then reading these messages that I am discontinuing use of Yasmin. I fear for what could happen next if I stay on it. Thank you for all of your posts in helping me make my decision.

So I started taking YASMIN in December 07. I switched to YAZ in January 08 and just quit a week ago. So about 4 months of bc. A week ago, I broke out in hives and rashes. I would itch one spot and then others would form. The areas get hot and the welts raise up my skin. It started when I was out in the sun but it couldn't have been sun poisoning because I never got burnt. I am diagnosing myself rather than a doctor because they do NOT know everything. After reading into the YAZ and YASMIN side effects, I am not risking anymore problems. Oh and I got an upper respitory infection along with the rash. This lingering cough has a weaze and phligmy sound. My friends are concerned with it too. I have never been the type of person to suffer from any major sickness or skin problem. I am tough skinned and have never gotten any kind of food allergy. I am 24, 5'6'' and in semi-athletic shape. I am an actor and model and I cannot afford to get rashes and a bad horsey cough! YAZ was great for 2 months and now bam! Downfall happening. Temporary relief-cortozone cream and antihistamines like benadryl.
YAZ benefit-clear skin, no PMS
YAZ side effect-rash, no sex drive/libido loss, difficult/no orgasm, appetite like a hog! Food #1 thought. Packed on pounds quick.
YASMIN benefit-clear skin, lost weight quick
YASMIN side effect- a little loopy, speech impediment, no sex drive/libido loss, no orgasm, couldn't even fake an orgasm!

I've been taking Yasmin for 2 1/2 months now, and since I've started taking it, I wake up with incredible amounts of hair on my pillow, and whenever I run my fingers through my hair, I'll have 5-10 strands in my hand. On top of that (which is the worst side effect), I've been extremely depressed, I have NO energy, in the short time that I have been taking it I have gained close to 10 pounds when previously I was losing weigh very steadily, I have been experiencing what feels like growing pains in my legs, and patches of dry skin on my arms. The only nice thing about this pill for me is the completely cramp-free periods and my face clearing up, which are nice, but don't make this pill worth it for me.

Ladies!
When my mum pointed out this website, and blogs bout Yasmin,
and after reading just a few,
i bursted out crying.
after just 3 months on Yasmin
i was completely, utterly depressed.
being a 15 year old then, it was the worst thing
in the world.
i am a highly trained athlete,
and this pill made me gain over 7 kgs.
training 8 times a week, and 3 dryland,
and STILL packing on the kgs was
unimaginable.
i became completely self conscious,
and stopped eating for days on end.
training suffered, but my muscles and body
suffered more.
all my muscles got completely fatigued and
i lost most of my fast-twitch muscle fibers.
apart from this i obtained a COMPLETE
Fluid retention in every part of my body.
thighs and face the worst.
i couldnt move my joints very freely,
and nothing would let this go.
the absolute worst part was the depression
and anxiety that came from this all.
i remember having 2 weeks off school,
and all i did, was stay home, in bed and cry.
i broke up with my boyfriend, and didn't want
a n y o n e to care about me, i even made a list,
of everyones names and crossed them
off as they hated me.
i cut myself, and hurt myself, especially on my legs
where my mind just hated seeing them,
and feeling this way.
could NOT stand being in my swim-wear during training,
i would run out, and cry if i saw someone look at me.
paranoia.
to feel this out of control with your own body,
is the worst feeling in the world.
i would cry.
everyday. every night.
and i couldnt stop.
i would be moody, and angry, and hopeless,
and start verbal fights everywhere i went.
and i didn't even know why.
after reading this all,
suddenly, everything made sense.
my doctor, told me, in specific words
"they call this the 'luxury pill' its the most expensive,
and has least side effects than any of the others."
i showed her this website.
after i went off it, i had the three day blues,
mum said, just like after pregnancy.
i cried, and cried and cried.
would be sitting in class, and bursted out in tears.
things were horrible.
its now about 6 months later, of not being on anything,
my periods just began back after not having them
for 4 months, and my body, is no where
near how it was before i went on pill,
but its getting there :)
one day I'm going to be an amazing swimmer.
and on the Australian team.
i guess, if i had not had this experience
i would never be this determined now.
I Would NEVER Recommend This Pill
To Any Girl Or Woman.
EVER.
Its Amazing What One
TINY Little Pill Can Actually Do To You.
stay strong girls,

Hi all! I just began taking YAZ two weeks ago and things were fine up until two days ago. I started experiencing itching on several parts of my boy an last night, realized I had hives on my waist at my back, near my underarms and have serious itching all over the rest of my body including the palms of my hands. Please, please, please if anyone reads this an has had similar side effects, please let me know. Furthermore, I did not take the pill last night as I knew this could be the only thing causing these issues. Does anyone know the reprecution of stopping the pill mid month? Please let me know and thanks for your help!

I have been on Yasmin for a year and I have gained 20 pounds within a year. I don't have a sex drive and it has been a problem with me and my husband. I have terrible headaches to the point where I want to stay at home with no light and sound. I called my doctor and changed today because I that is not right. I am depressed all of the time and I just cry for no reason. I have a family member on it and her legs and arms get numb and she has really bad headaches. I need doctors to stop prescribing this medicine.

I started taking Yasmin august 07-took it for 3 weeks, 2nd week I felt pressure on my chest, 3rd week there was this day I started feeling pressure on my chest and bad palpitations, I got a little worried and they told me I was having a panic attack, it took 20 minutes for me to calm down. I stopped taking Yasmin that day and have continued to feel sick since. Symptoms since Yasmin have been:severe nervousness, shivering, racing heart especially with activity, chest pressure, pain by me heart, huge decrease in appetite, panic, thoughts I will die, body aches, headaches, slight dizziness sometimes. I've been to ER twice I've also had 2 d-dimer tests positive but no blood clot in my chest or legs and been to doctor about 7 times-she just sent me to psychiatry even though she knows I say the pill caused it. I also have an appt with cardiology tomorrow- and I'm sure they will tell me its in my head as well-its been 5 months I wonder how long my sickness will last.

I thought this was a miracle because pill until after about a month ago.....breast tenderness, bloating, fluid retention.......makes you depressed when you are not even having a period. Been on Yasmin for about 6 months......just started skipping the inactive pills and starting a new pack.....that way you don't have a period at all. The edema itself is a nightmare. I have been on Yasmin in the past....with no problem...then 3 years ago I had a child and only started back six months ago. I thought I was gaining weight from overeating until I realized that my eating habits haven't changed at all. And to top that....I have exercised at least 3 times a week for the last six months (which is more than I have in the last 2 years) and I'm not losing any weight? I've also experienced the terrible muscle cramps in my legs.....thought it was shin splints.....but now that I read what people are saying I honestly believe that my problems might be from taking this because pill for way to long. I've taken my last pill this morning and I am not going to finish the pack. Taking a break from the pill period!!

I have been taking Yasmin since November 2006, since July this year I have been suffering from a condition called Chronic Urticaria. This involved a very itchy nettle rash, painful joints, swelling on my hands and feet, so much that I cant walk. My eyes swell up so much that I cant open them, my lips swell up, tightness in my chest almost so much that I can not breathe. I have been to the hospital loads of times, seen about 20 different doctors, been put on 5 different steroids, anti leprosy pills, antibiotics, post transplant pills, anti histamines and many more. I am just wondering if anyone else has suffered from any of these side effects whilst taking Yasmin?

Hi there!
I have to say, I am so happy that I have found this website. I feel like I'm crazy!! I have been taking Yasmin for a little over a year or so and within the past two month I have noticed significant stress, anxiety, depression (which I have NEVER experienced in my life). Although, over the past year I have noticed I have been tired, overall low energy, and snappy for no reason. Really high strung. I never knew why.
I do have to ask though, those of you who have stopped taking, or switched from Yasmin...have you noticed a shift in mood for the better? Have you noticed a difference in depression? I am planning to make an appointment for my OB/GYN tomorrow to get off this pill. I just want some hope that things will indeed get better, you know??

I started taking Yasmin this past sunday, so far, so good...reading all these posts worry the crap out of me...i'm only really on this because i have really BAD pms, which people i know including my boyfriend thought it could be PMDD because how "crazy" i'd get, bad cramps and my period sometimes likes to show up almost whenever even when i track it....i'm a moody person already and so far i feel pretty good, pretty stable which is nice, i guess the only complaint is that i'm kinda constipated and i'm exhausted, but i'm unsure if this has anything to do with this pill or not. i travel constantly and eat bad food since i'm away at college so sometimes i have some issues....oh my sex drive is usually pretty fine, i haven't noticed anything there yet, i still think about doing things and want to...so, my question is what should i do? shall i continue to use it and see what happens, or should i stop it or get a different pill?? i go to therapy and i am also making sure that my boyfriend and immediate friends notice if i act a little stranger than usual....
and i was on a different pill back when i was 15 and i don't remember much of it besides i don't think i had any side effects so i've had a little experience with birth control before...

I had been on Yasmine for about two years with no complications until last week. Last week my heart began beating extremely fast just while sitting at my desk typing. Later on in the day my chest began feelign tight and I had an "anxious" feeling in my upper body. At the same time my lower body felt completely weak- as if my legs could not support my body weight if I were to stand. Evenso, I thought nothing of it and just assumed my normal one cup of coffee just so happened to have a strong effect on me that day. The next day the anxious feeling and weakness had subsided but my left arm and hand were tingling. It felt as if they had fallen asleep and now had that "cotton" feeling. The next morning I lost all feeling in my left hand except for my first three fingers. This is when I began trying to figure out what on earth I may have eaten, where I had been, had i drank too much coffee, etc.
I rarely drink alcahol, don't smoke, have no family history of heart problems, etc. I don't take any other medications, I don't take vitamins, I dont eat strange foods, and exercise regularly. The only thing I could possibly change is my birth control. I immediately quit taking Yasmine and all problems disappeared in two days.

I have been taking this for 3 days and I am a little worried. My legs feel kind of tingly and sore (started about an hour after i took the 1st pill). I am not swollen or anything...this is pretty much my only side effect, but I can't get a hold of my obgyn to ask her about it, since I have to wait 2 months to get an appointment with her...I dunno. The leg cramps can't be a blood clot this soon? This site is really worrying me now.
It is not a shooting pain like they say in the pamphlet Warning Signs, just kind of a dull pain. I had a lot of leg cramps as a child and this feels just like it, but more mild.

When a class action lawsuit is filed, let me know....this drug should be taken of off the market immediately. We started all of this with an OB/GYN that prescribed this “miracle pill” and now have had to go not only to our primary doctor, but also a psychiatrist, gastrenologist, college campus counselors, psychologists, psychiatrist, and the campus medical doctors; All the while, accumulating enormous doctor bills. All the doctors say, "No, Yasmin won't cause those problems" (except the college campus doctors..wonder why? Hmm.. could it be that they are not in private practice?)....well, I beg to differ. Everyone needs to give this website to their doctor so the doctors can hear from the patients that have taken this drug, and not listen to the pharmaceutical companies that are pushing this drug to be the "miracle pill". Maybe if enough people complain and go to the media, we can get rid of this drug!
My daughter who is 18 was put on Yasmin because of irregular periods, hormonal imbalance, etc. We were told it was the new “miracle pill”. It will make you loose weight, regulate your periods, clear up acne, you name it, it will fix it. Yeah, right.
She started taking this pill in March 2007. She was off at college but called to tell me she was experiencing horrible headaches, behind the eyes. She complained about her stomach hurting, but we just figured it was the stress of freshman year at college. Then she said she got where she couldn’t eat when she went to a restaurant. When she came home in May for the summer, I noticed a total personality change. For example, she was always a neat freak, and now she wouldn’t clean her room. The first day when she drove home, she started crying she was so mad about the traffic. Yes, she has always had a little road rage, but this was ridiculous.
By June, not only could she not be in crowds, like at a restaurant, but now she is having full blown panic attacks and IBS. We called the OBGYN and they said, “Yasmin won’t cause this, go see your primary doctor”. I knew that the only thing that had changed with her was taking the YASMINE. I knew it had something to do with all of this so I “Googled Yasmin” and this website (http://www.medications.com/se/yasmin) was the first one I looked at. All of her symptoms matched everyone else’s! I am so glad we found this website, it explained everything and I had her to stop Yasmin immediately.
So we went to the primary doctor, explained about the Yasmin and how we thought it was the culprit of everything. Of course this doctor also says, “Yasmin won’t cause that”. We told him to look it up on the internet and see how there are over 3000 complaints on this drug, more than any of the other drugs on the market.
Besides the emotional problems she starting having, her pulse and blood pressure was sky high, so he puts her on medicine for that, and puts her on an anxiety medicine and sends her to a psychiatrist. She is very thirsty all the time, and develops IBS. She can’t eat without having pains in her stomach. So, now we’ve have gone from having just irregular periods, to all of the above, plus a psychiatrist.
The psychiatrist doubles her medicine (and puts her Pamine for the IBS) because the panic attacks are gone, but she still is having a lot of nervousness, anxiety, can’t sleep at night, crazy thoughts, worrying all the time, etc. A month later he changes her medicine again, to Effexor. The first 2 weeks, she does okay, but the packet doubles the strength after 2 weeks. It takes 4 weeks for it to take full effect. Right after she doubles this medicine, it is like her senses are on hyper-mode. She can taste everything that is in her food (chili powder, seasonings, etc…), taste the metal in water, and she can hear someone’s phone vibrating, in another room.
Then she goes back to college at the end of August 2007, and it’s horrible. The Effexor is having bad, bad side effects. We called the psychiatrist that she was using at home and he doubled the dose. That was the worse thing they could’ve done. The side effects were worse than ever. I had her to immediately go to a psychiatrist on campus. She told him the whole story and he believed her! Needless to say we switched doctors. He then lowered her dose back down to ½ a dose and hopefully can slowly get her off of all this medicine.
The newest thing she has developed is being hypoglycemic. The campus psychiatrist sent her to a campus medical doctor and he told her that they would get to the bottom of this. He tested her for everything under the sun. Low blood sugar is the only thing they found. But, she hasn’t taken the Yasmin since May. No telling what the results would have came back like if it was done at the time she was taking Yasmin.
Thank goodness she has counselors and doctors there at the campus that believes that Yasmin can cause all of these problems, and are working with her. From what I have read from the people that have used this medicine, although most doctors do not agree, Yasmin takes like 6 months to get out of your system. I think I am going to believe the testimonials of the people who take this medicine, over a doctor who prescribes it.
If everyone goes to the media, their doctors, the FDA, congressmen, and make them aware of these horrible effects, surely we can get this drug off of the market! Does anyone know a class action lawyer that would pursue this? For my child to have to go through all of this is ridiculous, not to mention costly. What do we know of the long term effects this drug will have if it is doing all of this when you first start taking it?
If you have the same concerns as me about this drug, and would be interested in looking into a class action lawsuit, please email: ****** I would be interested to see how many would want to pursue this.

I have been off Yasmin for almost 2 weeks and the panic attacks are gone!!! I feel much better. I decided not to use another form of birth control "with hormones" until my hormones are balanced! The only thing is I am having HORRIBLE headaches, the muscles in my legs and arms are still aching and my mood swings are still there. I hope this ends SOON!! Right now I am taking vitamin B complex to see if that helps any.

Man! OKay, first I came on this website to look for the awful side effects I experience with Nuvaring birth control...after reading a hundred comments of girls who had the same problems with it as me! I am definitely dropping it! So I think, what about Yasmin?? maybe this one will be good, and I come to this comment page, and everyone has OTHER identical bad side effects!
Looks like Nuvaring makes you insanely anxious and on edge and KILLS your sex drive 100%. And now I see Yasmin...gives you horrible aching pains in your legs at night.... and ups your heart rate and gives you mummurs!
Is there no hope for us? Does anyone know a BC that is actually good?? Help!

I started taking yaz about 8 months ago January 2007. I started getting some calf pain in the morning but didn't think anything about it, then when I went on vacation at the end of June both calves were hurting, I ended up going to a doctor on vacation and she gave me some muscle relaxers. By the time I flew back home in July, I ended up in the emergency room and given a strong pain reliever. I ended up going on line and went to my doctor the next day and told her that I thought it was Yaz, she send me for an ultra sound and I had a superficial clot in my left calf. Since I have ended up going to a vein specialist and am wearing support hose. Both legs are still really hurting (including my knees and ankles), I also have had severe eye pain and have gone to the opthalmologist, I have been prescribed glasses but feel now that it is the yaz, I have been off yaz for about 2 months and still having severe muscle pain, does anyone know how long this lasts...

2 weeks ago I switched from Microgestion FE to Yasmin. I thought my slight pms would disappear with yasmin. What has followed has made my slight pms feel like a walk in the park.
5 days into the first week I had terrible nausea, heart palpitations and anxiety. A few days later started the body aches everywhere. i felt like i was actually dying. I found this website and went off the pill after 11 days, within 1 day I was so much better and almost totally better by 2-4 days.
A week later they gave me Yaz samples. Started those 4 days ago. I was vomiting this afternoon and now have seriously bad cramps in my hips and legs. i feel like i got hit by a truck. i have to assume its the pill, since it's so similar to the yasmin. what is strange is that i tried a pack or two of yaz a year ago with no problems that i recall. And although i am having the anxiety and mental side effects these physical ones are not something i am manifesting. I am not sure if my body has changed, or like another posted mentioned a reformulation. Never had side effects to bcps before either.

Firstly I start take Jasmin because I was constantly spotting and early painful period. My gynaecology recommended me to take Jasmin for 3 month without break so I did. Thanks!! I have now been spotting more than before (brown discharges) for the past two month and now for the past 4 day I am bleeding???? What is going on?? My sex life is going down hill… migraine and head hake for a weeks …. I feel very tired. But thanks I have bigger bubby but my legs water retention is not flattering. I am so tired of all of this.

ANOTHER UPDATE:
Hi again, I posted on the 12th and the 15th I was on Yas for a week, noticed a bad change of moods etc.
well here's the time line....
I got my period on Saturday Aug. 4th and started the pill on the 5th. I stopped taking it the 13th or 14th So I was on it for 8-9 days. Well I am spotting heavily and have major cramps which all started the 17th. And while reading the new posts and seeing how people are complaining about migraines I REALIZE ME TOO! I got a migrane on Thursday night the 16th at work. At first I thought it was due to lack of sleep, work or having had taken a late lunch.... fine I go home go to bed. Wake up early still had the migrane but went back to sleep since I didn't have to be at work until late. Headache was gone when I woke up again. But I've been feeling a little discomfort in my head very slight. I's like a ball was rolling around in there and any sudden movement would hurt a little as if the ball bounced against the walls. Anyway today the migraine came back full force same place. Right side of my head like a pin has been inserted from the back to the middle of my right eyebrow. Has anyone been feeling like this? And I am spotting and have very very bad cramps. I dont know whats going on if it's me having a bad week or if it has anything to do with this damn pill. Anyway thats it, sorry if I'm rambling a bit I am having a very hard time trying to express myself with my head pounding.

I was on Yasmin for a long time- maybe a year or more. That was about 3 yrs ago - I've been off it for at least a year.
Here's my question: how long will these symptoms persist after I go off the pill? I'm not sure why I have my symptoms, but maybe this pill started it. I am constantly in muscle pain, high fatigue, swollen, painful feet daily, ache/painful shoulders, back, hips, but and legs. I am not myself and haven't been in years. Maybe this drug started it.?? Your opinions based on your experience?

OMG I am so happy I found this post. I was just telling my co-workers and my friend that for the past 4 days I get so mad at work. I get really annoyed, angry and super bitchy.... which is so not me. I mean everyone is always saying what a sweet girl I am blah blah blah."Well I have felt a total 180 and I have only been on Yasmin for a week! Is it possible for it to kick in so quickly. I mean I get really angry so angry that it had me trying to figure out the root of this "new found evil" side of me lol. But I am going to call my GYN tomorrow and demand a new medication. It's making my life unbearable and hits me worse the minute I step into my office... (granted going to work isn't fun) Now I also notice I have been very sleep. I have been sleeping fine at night but no matter how much sleep I get I am sleepy. Has anyone felt this? I used to use some other BC I think something called lo overal and i was fine, I loved it. Anyway I am very grateful to have read these posts.

My gyn told me that yaz is a "great" drug. I started this pack of pills 4 days ago and have not slept for two nights. My legs are so sore. They burn, ache, and feel swollen. Worse at the knees. I will not be taking this pill today or any other day. I would rather gain five pounds or be moody on my regular pill than deal with this hell. I don't take any other meds aside from the occasional Tylenol and have no medical problems. Nothing relieves my legs except for walking the floors at 2:00 AM. As soon as I lay down, they start aching again.

I have just come across this site, while looking to find out why I have been experiencing heart palpitations for the past two months - out of the blue!!! and usually "exercise" induced. I had some tests and have been told they are Premature Atrial Contractions "PACs". I started taking Yasmin in April, after having tried others over the past year (tri-cyclen lo and alesse) which did not work for me as the progestin was not strong enough. I am in my 40s and never took the pill before. Yasmin was great, it significantly reduced my "physical" pms (severe inflamation, severe bloating, severe sore breasts) which I experience for 2-3 weeks a month. However, sometime in mid to late June, I started getting palpitations/tremors out of the blue. The first episode freaked me out and lasted for about two weeks. At first I thought it was allergy medication mixed with my thyroid med, which can happen - but I cut out the allergy meds and still got them. They seem to come about 6hrs to a day after I fexercise/figure skate and they last from 2 to 5 five days. It's very irritating and nerve wracking, and I feel very agitated. I am also out of breath more than usual when walking up stairs, a little light headed and have some tightness in the chest. My legs also are weak, which makes no sense given my exercise regimen. I then lowered my thyroid replacement from .125 synthroid to .100 - too much thyroid med can cause some palpitations. Anyone who has mistakenly taken a second thyroid pill having forgotten that they already took one will understand. Even with the lower dose I am still getting the palpilations. I am totally at a loss as to why all of a sudden this is happening to me (perhaps perimenopause??). I have had the odd flutter here and there in my live, but nothing like this. It just doesn't make any sense ag ll. Can one's health just change like this overnight?. I am otherwise healthy, slim, have "lower" blood pressure (apprx 100-90/70-60)I skate 3 to 5 times a week, I have a full time job and yes I do push myself, but this is getting ridiculous. The only thing I can attribute it to is the Yasmin, ... but my symptoms only started after a few months not instantly, whereas it would seem that most of the the women here noticed the side effects faster. I hate to stop the Yasmin because I will have to return to pms "hell", but I suppose I will give it a try to see if the palpitations subside. At this point, I have been offered a low dose "beta blocker" and have refused. I am stunned to think that all of a sudden I have heart issues, especially since my Dr has always kidded me my that I will never have heart problems with my blood pressure. I will stop the Yasmin tonight and post another message in a few weeks one it is out my system. Here's hoping it is the Yasmin.

I have been using Yasmin for nearly 3 months now. I switched from Diane to Yasmin because one of my friends advised it. I was actually quite happy with my old pill Diane but nevertheless I thought Yasmin would be better. Oh and she also mentioned that makes your breast grow!!!
The first month of taken Yasmin I had really bad headaches almost everyday but like a subborn cow I kept on taking it. Into the next month I have had a really bad skin rash. Its not really ichy but its red tiny little dots all over my arms, legs and belly/hip area. I am still continpating whether Yasmin is the reason for these side effects but after reading all of these post I now think it is possible that Yasmin is the reason. If anyone out there has had the same problem or can advise me in the right direction please reply to me

I have been on Yasmin for 3 months. During the first month I had mood swings and felt very fatigued. During the second and third months I've had severe muscle cramps in my legs, on and off backache, more fatigue, and shoulder cramps. I am on it to regulate my period which before could happen three weeks apart, or six months apart. I am beginning to feel as though these side effects aren't worth it just to have a regular period.

I started taking Yasmin about 10 days ago. On the first day I was at my computer and noticed that I suddenly couldnt focus on my screen. My vision became blurry. I also felt sharp shooting pains behind my legs.I took it for 7 days. During that time I became extremely tired, lethargic, fatigued, my eyes hurt. I slept for longer hours, and just felt generally drained. This was highly noticeable to me since I go to the gym everyday, and I didn't even have the zeal or energy to do that. My breasts became very sore and sensitive. The shooting pains moved from the back of my legs to random parts of my body. I stopped taking it after the 7th day and noticed an immediate improvement in my energy level the next day. I didnt need as much sleep, my eyes felt much better, not grainy and painful like I had to close them all the time. Now, the 11th day, my breasts are no longer tender, and all the other symptoms are gone. These are just the facts. I personally WILL NEVER take this pill again!!

On 4.25.07 after four days of taking YAZ i found myself in the ER havinf a CT of my head, lungs, sonogram of both my legs, x-ray of my lungs, ekg of my heart, blood & urine samples taken. All in all I spent 11 hours being poked and examined only to be told to stop taking YAZ. My symptoms were: extreme dizziness, heart palpatations, headache, tingling in my legs, partial numbness in my left check, fatigue. They were concerned that I may have had a blood clot due to the pills and that's why they were looking at my legs & lungs. If I had developed a clot in my legs I would've had to taken blood thinners for 6 months and if it would've been in my lungs I would've been admitted into the hospital that day. Now a day later I am extremely tired, have a heart monitor attached to my chest. (They're having me wear this for 24 hrs.) I've had one dizzy spell and feel a little "out of it". If I had known that such a small little pill could create so much havoc I would've never taken it in the first place.

@ ipj:
Did you have any other symptoms caused by that magnesium deficiency?? Would be so interesting to hear, if you also had cramps in your legs or so. I always wonder, if those cramps HAVE TO BE THERE, if you have a lack of magnesium or if it even can be shown alone by all the other symptoms (nervousness, heart palps, dizzyness, headaches, etc.)...
Best wishes

I started taking Yasmin about 3 months ago. About a week ago, I fainted and had to go the ER. There they found that my heart rate was irregular so they put me on a heart monitor. A day later I was back in the ER because of chest pains and a shortness of breath. Two days after that, I was in the ER once again due to my extremely high heart rate and pain in my legs. They told me it was my thyroid levels that were causing this, so I found a different doctor who said it was not my thyroid but had no idea what it was. I ended up going to a cardiologist who just told me I was under a lot of stress. I asked each doctor if my birth control could have anything to do with it, and they all told me no. Well, after finding this website, I can now see that it is Yasmin causing my health problems. Thank you all so much for posting your stories...they really saved me!

I'm glad I'm not alone. I didn't have any problems with Yasmin at first, but when I lost weight I started to have a lot of vaginal dryness, difficulty with my contact lenses, twitchy legs at night, foggy thinking, etc. Takign a magnesium supplement helped with the twitchy legs. I went off of Yasmin one month when I was travelling and all those side efects went away. In addition, I found that I was sleeping better than I had in months. I stayed on it for a while because none of my side-effects were very strong and would come and go, and I wasn't sure if it was the Yasmin
My OB-GYN was very understanding so this month I'm switching back to Ortho-tricylen. Wish me luck!

I am shocked reading this forum. I thought maybe I had a bit of depression due to seasonal affective disorder. However, I started Yasmin 3 months ago due to a switch in gyno's. He prescribed Yasmin instead of the Ortho Evra patch which I had been using previously for almost 3 years. I noticed several changes, and recently I've even noticed swelling in my legs, and pain in my ankles and feet at night. It's so bad by the end of the day sometimes that I could cry. I have no sexual desire - I'm always moody - I have no desire to do anything worthwhile. It's pretty sad. I feel myself snapping at everyone, and I have treated my boyfriend horribly. The hardest part is realizing all of this, and in a situation where I snap - I think to myself I need to get over this - I need to be happy - and I can only find myself being moody. I am overly tired all the time, and could pass out at the end of the day. I'm stopping the medication today & cannot wait to be done with this HELL. I'll update as to whether or not there are changes. I've never been so happy as when I was on my Ortho Evra Patch.

hi kim123,
i am sure it is a symptom of your anxiety levels. the excess adrenalin circulating in your system causes muscles to twitch, tense and shake and tingle just like they would if you were in real danger (although you are not your body thinks you are because of the constant high anxiety state) i used to have twitching in my legs, they would jump and shake all the time. i also used to get tingling and numbness in my face. how is it going with the lexapro? is it helping you at all?

hi dejay78,
i am so sorry that you feeling so bad,i really feel for you,i made me so sad to read your post as i can remember feeling that i would never be well again and that i just wanted my life to be over. please do not feel bad about taking the lexapro,if it will help you then that is all that matters.do not feel that because other women survived without taking anything it makes you a weaker person ,it does not! i have no idea if taking a medication would have made my recovery easier or not but i was sooo terrified of taking another medication that i thought i would take my chances without,it does not make me a stronger person that you at all,all that matters is that you get well again and that you can cope with your children again and that you can sleep again and that you can smile and enjoy your life again.it does not matter what you take or don't take as long as you recover, each of us that has been affected by yasmin have had different symptoms and imbalances and different medications or vitamins etc that have helped us,hopefully the lexapro will give you enough relief from your symptoms that your system and your mind will be ready to fight back, we all need a little helping hand now and again, it makes no difference what works as long as it does work. if you need moral support you know where we are, all the wonderful ladies here will always answer your questions or give you support when you need it.
my heart goes out to you and your family.i really hope that the lexapro will give you some much needed rest from your symptoms. i did have twitchy legs at night, they would jump and fidget but that seems to have stopped now (8 months off yasmin) keep the faith that you will get better, tell yourself everyday that you will and are getting better,i know it does not seem like it now but it will happen little by little and day by day.

Your post is so interesting because I thought I was losing my mind these past few weeks. I am 22 years old and have been on Yasmin for the past 4 years, and I stopped taking it 2 months ago. I have not had my period yet at all, and have been feeling terrible since I stopped. I had the cramping in my legs (I too found that stretching helped!) and stiffness, along with awful stomach pains and nausea. I thought I was pregnant, but after numerous tests, I am not. I assume it is all related to stopping Yasmin..but my doctor doesn't agree. I have also had the dizziness you mentioned. Such strange symptoms after stopping the pill, and yet no doctor I have seen has mentioned the possibility of them to me!

I've been on Yasmin for nearly 4 years and decided to stop taking this pill because like most of you I felt REALLY bad!! I had symptoms like cramps in my feet and legs, regular blackouts (I was taken to ER everytime), dizziness, shortness of breath, migraines, ear congestion, complete lack of energy and worst of all anxiety. I've also developed arthritis in my right shoulder for which I went to see a physio and thank god it is getting better.
I saw so many doctors and none of them could find anything wrong with me and none of them had the wonderful feeling that this may have been caused by Yasmin. When I told them I wanted to stop the pill, they told me there was no reason why and that I should carry on. So that was my decision to stop it and a very good one!! The doctors are wrong !
I am off Yasmin now since 1st of July 06 and it's only now that I start to feel better! I've been through so many weird symptoms: pains and swelling in both of my calves, cramps in my legs (streching helps!), nausea, heavy sweating during the night, my ears feel like they are blocked but no more of the other symptoms (blackouts have not come back)and my periods have come regularly but are very short (3 days).... My body is recovering and my calves are getting better. I also found out that I start to get cellulitis on my legs (what a nightmare), I was told by a friend that' s because of the pill!!
I am now full of energy, the anxiety has gone (I can face the world now), and I am determined NOT TO GO BACK on any C pills anymore.
I am 38 years old and have been on different pills since the age of 19, I would like to know if anybody of my age (or anybody) experienced symptoms like mine after they stopped Yasmin and how long it takes for them to disappear....

Hi BitterRN!!
(Sorry ladies if this seems to get a "privat chat", but I think our "written books" can surely be helpful to others of you, too....)
Well, I absolutely understand, what you say. And this is surely an option I will get checked (ok, if I ever will have the power to go to another doctor again after my aimless oddyssey in 2005.......!). I think I should mention, that here in Germany the health system has gotten really difficult in the past 6 - 7 years so that the doctor's could not make every test on you which might be helpful. So it's really difficult to get blood tests (especially the expensive ones as homormonal testings...) done by a doc. That's what my situation always made even more difficult, than it already was...
But one thing I really don't understand: My perhaps low testosterone levels still don't explain, why I was doing so much better the last few months (as I already told here in former posts, I even started singing in my band again and I really felt good, about 85% like my old self!!) and now, after that bad cold 3 weeks ago, the tiredness and muscle weakness and stiffness (also craming in my legs during night and day) kicked in at once as if I was thrown back to nearly one year ago... I really feel and think, that his must be a lack of some minerals or vitamines again (magnesium because of the cramping legs and fingers, perhaps b-vitamines??? I feel so unsure......). Maybe this comes on top of the testosterone or other hormonal problem and makes my symptoms worse...!??? But I deeply feel, that there MUST be something else above the definitely still lasting hormonal imbalance...
Thank you BitterRN for answering so quickly and detailed!!
best wishes

YES! I had those "balloons" which means "legs", too!! I never had any problems with cellulite or swelling of ancles and such, but under Yasmin my whole legs started looking like they were pumped full with water!!
It's going back very slowly (I've been off Yasmin 1,5 years now!!), as the whole weight does, which I put on under Yasmin!! But finally my legs start looking like "legs" again! And my whole body does also finally start looking "normal" again and not longer like a big water ton!!

Within about 8 days of starting Yaz, I developed muscle pain all over my body, but especially in my legs and shoulders. Sometimes it felt like muscle cramps, sometimes like a crawling feeling, sometimes like a pinching, sometimes like a knot. Blood tests and a Doppler test showed no blood clots, but I went off the pill anyway. The symptoms started improving after a few days, and mostly went away within a few weeks. But then I came down with extreme itching and discharge, and trips to four different doctors revealed no infection. That finally cleared up after about two months. Now I'm on a different pill, and unfortunately the muscle pain is coming back. So I guess hormonal birth control might not be for me, but like someone said, this is not easy to deal with in a committed monogamous relationship. I'm going to take a break from all hormonal birth control and hope that the return of the muscle pain was just because my body isn't ready yet after the Yaz.
