I was on zyprexa since I was 11. I am taking it for bipolar disorder and although it does make me gain weight I still need it. Without my 2.5 mg of zyprexa I would not sleep or eat for weeks and would probably be anorexic.

I'm taking zyprexa for months. I didn't try to taper it off because i know i will be experiencing withdrawal symptoms if i stop taking the medicine. I've been taking 10 mg of olanzapine and the side effects to me is dry mouth, dry lips and weight gain. Bad thing is I was being mistaken as a drug addict due to dry lips.

I took Zyprexa for a week or two, during psych hospitalization for (basically) a nervous breakdown at my job. In that amount of time, I gained too much weight and for that reason, stopped the med.
It did seem to help the psych problems I had, but not worth it if it caused weight gain to that extent, that fast.

i´ve been taking zyprexa for about 3-4 years now. i have severe imsomnia & constant twitching. i have extreme nausea & headaches. i´ve noticed that i´ve been happier but i can still feel down at times for small events that happen. i hardly ever get depressed but i hate the weight gain when i first began taking it i gained alot of weight & then for a year or so i was able to control my feeding binges but once again it´s gone out of control. i´d like to get off this medication but seeing that my doctor say´s he hasn´t seen me for over a year (my docs change periodically) he wants to keep me on it. i´m scared about getting diabetes & all the other side-effects.. i want to be able to sleep normally....

I have been on Zyprexa for the best part of 2 years. Luckily I haven't had a great deal of side effects except weight gain. I used to weigh about 10.5 stone now I weigh around 12.5. I am in the process of coming off it now I am currently down from 7.5 mg to 5mg. I go to see my doctor again in 6 - 8 weeks where I hope to drop down to 2.5 mg.
I hope I can come off this drug with no major problems.

I have been taking Zyprexa (and Zoloft) for 2 years. I have gained 70 lbs. I have no energy. I do not have a full range of emotions. I am now very agreeable. I don't have reasonable reponses to things/situations. I sleep a lot, I no longer exercise at all. My weight gain is a real issue to me. I recently learned that Zyprexa has been linked to diabetes, which my dad died of two years ago. I STOPPED taking it 4 days ago, and have gone thru really bad withdrawals: itching, acheing joints, tremors, severe anxiety, not sleeping, sweating, then freezing, not able to relax, can't get comfortable...I'll let ya know how it goes...

I've been taking Zyprexa for 6 wks. Gained about 20 lbs. Also on Valium, Paxil for several yrs. Started Depakote 9 mos. ago so I figured that was reason for weight gain. Now after 6 weeks I have extremely swollen legs & feet. Mostly on right side which is weird if you ask me! I was pretty much knocked out at onset of taking RX but now I'm up till 2 a.m. putzing around. So why bother taking the Zyprexa I ask. Hmm, I called doc today re: swelling but of course, no response as yet. I don't know what my DX is; I believe it's Bipolar or Unipolar. Definitely not schizophrenia (per doc) but one never knows. I actually have had some ringing type sensation in left ear, too. My face is swollen, sore throat at times and it feelsl like my glands are as well. (when I look in the mirror I look like I have mumps - I'm 53 y/o so I doubt it!). My eyes are swollen too. Basically I'm foraging around the kitchen all the time. Day, night, in-between. Hard as I'm a vegan and I'm running out of veggies all the time. Considering d/c ing myself but afraid of seizures. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Thanks and Bright Blessings to all.

Summary: WARNING ABOUT stelazine, moban, paxil, risperdal, haloperidol
my doctor just prescribed me zyprexa, i'm supposed to go to the drug store and pick it up tomorrow. I'm NOT going to take it after reading the side effects people have had here. Reason being i have had serious sideffect problems.
The problem is every drug he has prescribed me for schizophrenia for the last 3 years has had some side effect. I've been mentally healthy because of them but physically sick. I've been on 5 different medications for schizophrenia. (and then numerous medications for the health problems they caused) I was healthy and athletic 6'0 155pounds gym girl when i was diagnosised with it and put in the hospital.
Over the 3 years i've taken stelazine, moban, paxil, risperdal, haldal. Before stopping them all together. First the pills robbed me of all my energy so i couldn't work out anymore. Then my hair started to fall out in clumps. (i had to shave my head at the time) Then i started to gain weight in 3 years i went from 155 to 250. Then i got insomnia (that still hasn't gone away) Then i was diagnosed with Tartive something (something technical i'm not sure what its called but i have the same symptoms as parkison disease) I went to different medical drs and they said it was caused by taking medication for schizophrenia for so long and that it would go away once i stopped taking them or by taking another medicine to combat sideeffects and or lorasipam when the illness occurs. That was last year. i have uncontrolled body movements of my hands and legs, more than trembling actual movement. It has not gone away. It is something i have to live with now. Because of it i had refused to take anti-psychotics for a long time. (Although i still took other medications from a dr for health problems that were orginally caused by the anti-psychotics) Last month my dr insisted that i've been off them too long and that i may relapse if i didn't start them again so i tried haloperidol. My feet and legs swoll up. (that went away) I have pain in my feet and legs. And they found blood in my urine. (that didn't go away) I have gone for blood tests, a ultrasound of the kidney and legs. But they didn't find anything else. Looking back i would have prefered to remain mentally ill than to have the health problems i have now by using the medicines to cure mental illness. The ironic thing about it is now that i plan to refuse the anti-psychotics again i may just end up back at square one but with this parkison like disease in addition. I want to warn everyone please go to a medical doctor and get a check up a month after starting any of these medications.

Since taking Zyprexa 15mgs. each night, I have experienced stomach pain, muscle pain in legs, hunger pangs 1/2 hour after dosage each night, weight gain, tremor of fingers on hand, very quiet...not speaking and very agreeable. This is not me! I stopped taking Zyprexa 5 days ago, pains in stomach gone, leg pain gone, hunger pangs gone, speaking more and making my own decisions, but not sleeping as well.

there are some positives with Zyprexa. I took it briefly to treat Schizoaffective disorder, which is half schizophrenia half bipolar disorder.
Zypexa helped me sleep. After years and years of sleep disorder, I actually slept so well and used to wake up feeling invigorated. However, often it would be difficult to get out of bed. Not great if you're trying to work and run your own business.
The downside of Zyprexa is the weight gain. I was always careful about what I ate, but I could not control eating whilst on Zyprexa. I'd literally eat a full meal in the evening and then go out for a pizza afterwards. My weight gain was 30%.
