Michele
Pdsdenver - Dear Michele--I knew something was terribly wrong with me. While discussing my pain with a friend she asked me if I was on a statin drug and told me that her mother experienced muscle spasms from taking a statin drug. After learning about my friend’s mother, I started doing a lot of research, found several websites, I was quite scared. I stopped the statin drug after five months. After informing my M.D. and he performed many blood tests, he sent me to a rheumatologist because one of my blood tests showed that I have the gene for arthritis, HLBA27 and sent me to a rheumatologist. The rheumatologist said that being positive for the arthritis gene does not mean that I will develop arthritis. Only 10% of people with the positive gene develop arthritis. He ordered an X-ray of my lower back area and prescribed a high dose naproxen for two weeks. The lower back X-ray produced no negatives. The rheumatologist has order an MRI of my pelvic area. A D.O. suspects statin induced myopathy. I also have hyper reflexes so he ordered an MRI of my brain and cervical spine. I was then recommended to a neurologist who specializes in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. The neurologist said that the spots in my brain MRI are old and would not produce the symptoms I have. He wants to wait three months and order another brain MRI for comparison. The neurologist said I do not have typical symptoms of MS, but that there are different types of MS. So again I wait for more MRI’s. Only one doctor said I might have statin drug injury. The rest will not even mention the statin drug theory. I just pray for ache and pain relief. I have some improvement after five months off of the statin which I believe is a strong point that my condition was caused by the statin drug and not some unknown condition. Arthritis or MS conditions do not improve. All I know is that I had none, not even one, health issue before taking the simvastatin. I have experienced so many of the symptoms everyone describes. I am on a regimen of vitamins, high fiber intake, any and all natural remedies for high cholesterol, naproxen, Skelaxin, and supplements including high doses of Co-Q10 and L-Carnitine. I exercise daily by walking or stationary biking. I have also found dancing helps very much. When I do not exercise, I am miserable. I am 51 and like you said I act like I am 80. Keep going to as many different specialty doctors as you can. They all have different treatments and hopefully you will find one that works. I would rather die of high cholesterol than experience what I have been through, but consult your doctor before you discontinue the drug. I am seeing improvement, but it is VERY slow to come. Three months ago I was able to only sit for 5 minutes without excruciating pain. I am now able to sit longer but I am very stiff after any period of inactivity. I am having pain free days about every other day or at times I go two-three days without pain depending on my activities. I continue to have muscle aches from neck to toes. I have frequent urgency to urinate and have even wet myself a few times. A few months ago, I could not even bend over when brushing my teeth. Every motion hurts except my head. My head has never hurt or had any pain such as headaches or jaw aches. My research indicates that statin drugs can waste your muscles and high doses of Co-Q10 should help. They took one of the statin drugs off of the market because it destroyed the heart muscle and other internal organs and several people were killed. I guess the drug companies don't care unless somebody dies. I predict that statin drug damage will be an epidemic. I'm so sorry for you and everyone that has to go through this. I read a report about some British scientists that are developing a gene test that will indicate which people are allergic to statin drugs. The drug makers should have thought of this before marketing statin drugs. The things that have helped me are hot Jacuzzi baths, joint ache cream, and I have been taking Hyland’s Leg Cramps with Quinine. My husband bought me a True Back devise which helps realign the spine. Stretching and stabilization exercises help as well. If you can tolerate Naproxen, ask your doctor about getting some high dosage Naproxen. My doctor said that as long as I eat something before or after taking the Naproxen that it should not cause any stomach problems. It helps a great deal for the pain. Sorry this got so lengthy, but I hope the information helps you in some way. Please feel free to email me. It’s hard for others to understand what we are going through and it helps to have some support. Take care and good luck!
