My pulmanary lung care specialist started me on Symbicort the end of November 2009. I was on Advair prior to that for many years. I have asthma and anxiety disorder all my life. In the past 10 years, I have also been diagnosed with COPD. I had been taking Advair since it first came out with no adverse reaction but according to the doctor Symbicort was supposed to make me better than the Advair did. Since I started taking it 5 months I have had 3 dipilating bouts of flu like symptoms, accompanied by migraine headache, ear infection, sore throat and swollen glands. My primary care doctor treated each of these with aggressive antibiotics. It seems that it helped somewhat but as soon as I go off them the symptoms are back within a week or so. Each day I become more and more fatigued and my checst hurts from coughing. I spoke to the lung doctor 5 weeks ago as I suspected the medicine may be the problem and he said "Oh no, the medicine can't do that, it is the same thing as Advair except for one ingredient." So I took it another few weeks, finally, I spoke to my pharmacist and he told me that yes, it may very well be an adverse reaction to the medication. So I stopped taking it altogether about 2 weeks ago and I feel much better now. I don't have any Advair and so I have been flying solo. I have an appointment with my lung care professional on Tuesday and if he insists I need to go back on this, I am going to look for another doctor.
