Weird Side Affects When Taking Midrin

I have been suffering from migraines since summer of 02' due to a concussion from a wake boarding accident... it wasn't until a Dr recently put me on Topamax (isnt working) where I am finally weaning off 100mg of it because it is not working and only making my migraines 10x worse and more frequent. Not to mention I am having some side affects that my Dr really doesn't like hearing.. like stars in my vision ALL the time, whether they be floating, shooting or sparkling. ... more »

Recently, last Friday my Dr prescribed me 325mg Midrin... I am only to take it *as soooon as I start getting a migraine* well, sadly, I never know when I am going to get a migraine, as I have no triggers, and I don't see auras, etc... so I am told to take the Midrin right away. ANYWAY TO THE POINT ((SORRY!!!))

Ive experienced migraines while at work, and yea, of course, I didn't have the Midrin with me, as I cant take this stuff while at work because the side affects!! Well, the one time Ive taken it (and since then) Ive noticed that during a migraine, that not only when I have stars in my vision, ever so often I will see a neon orange, purple and most recently I saw a neon blue star!! It was only one of each color---- but at different times.

Has anyone ever experienced this with Midrin? I am getting an MRI done on Wednesday afternoon... so once results come back... I am also going to inform my Dr about these neon stars too... hahaha... She already knows about the stars (one reason out of many as to why she wants me tapering off Topamax!!)

Rachpaige - I take Midrin and at first did have many side effects, but the more you take it you build up a tolerance to the medication. I've never had the starry vision though, sorry. One thing I did want to make you aware of is a drug I take at night called Amitriptyline. I was having headaches and migraines almost every day until my doctor prescribed Amitriptyline. It's actually an anti-depressent but used in smaller doses it works as a muscle relaxer. It helps me sleep deeper at night and relaxes me so I don't wake up with a migraine. After the first week or two, it actually almost completely prevents my headaches/migraines!! Might want to check with your doctor to see if you could try that instead of the Topamax!!!

Qt314sanna - I also suffer from migraines. I was taking the Topamax which did great, but since I am prone to kidney stones had to be taken off. Now I am also on the amitriptyline at night and Fioricet at the first sign of a migraine. Imatrix, midrin, and Zomig all put me in a paralized state and made the migraines worse. I dont know what triggers mine and had CT scans and MRIs. No reason has been found. Im sticking with works for me: amitripyline nightly and fioricet as need.
