Avelox Swelling of the Ankles, Sinus Infections, Sour Stomach, Burning Sensation, Moxifloxacin
I have problems with sinus infections, and the particular bacteria is only sensitive to floraquinelones, (Ciprofloxacin, Moxifloxacin, etc. Avelox is moxifloxacin, and is the only oral drug that I could take because I have had a reaction in the past with Cipro. I was immediately constipated, and for the first 4 days that was the only thing I felt was a side effect. Then on the fifth day and 6th day my neck, back, elbows and knees were in pain. I started having a sour stomach and headache on the 6th day. My physician said I was probably having an immune response to the medication and to continue taking them. By the 7th day, I started breaking out in what looked like hives, but were tender to the touch and hot on my feet and lower legs. I was still feeling ill with headache. I was told to stop taking them on the 8th day, because I woke up feeling like my legs were literally on fire. Since then I have had the tendons in my arches get so inflamed the I could not stand on my feet. In addition I have been diagnosed with Erythema nodosum, an inflammatory condition that is an allergic reaction. I get new nodules with pain , swelling and inflammation almost on a daily basis, and have missed four days of work so far, two of them because I could not stand on my feet I was in so much pain. I have been told that it takes three to six weeks for this to clear up! ... more »

All in all, I felt I had been poisoned, I did not eat for 4 days, malaise, pain in joints, headache, nausea, burning sensation and tender hives on feet and legs, involuntary movement, painful swelling of the ankles and feet . This is the worse reaction I have ever had to an antibiotic. I currently have problems with penicillin, sulfa, Cipro and Avelox. My only other option now is intravenous antibiotic which will be done in the hospital. I'm not looking forward to that at all. Avelox should not be prescribed as a genera antibiotic, it is bacteria specific. I also feel that the medical trials are incorrect.
