Avelox & Permanent Iris Damage

I have permanent iris damage, Iris Atrophy. I had pneumonia April, 2012, was given Avelox and Zyvox through IV in hospital and then taken orally for 10 days. I developed burning and extreme light sensitivity. In May, 2012, I was told my irises are now translucent and the pupil no longer dilates. I have been doing research online and I've found other cases that sound similar to mine. My online research is revealing that Avelox may be the cause of my Iris Atrophy. If anyone has info on this, please reply! It is so frustrating! I am being treated with prosthetic iris contact lenses which help a lot with the sun sensitivity. I'm curious what treatment others like me are doing? Is there any way to prove Avelox is the cause of this?

Swedish - I have not taken any antibiotic of this kind. A close friend of mine did and I started to look for information many years ago. If I am not mistaken, this is a kind of quinolone antibiotic. When I started to look for information in 2005 I was suprised to find people who called themselves "floxies", they had been "floxed". Google those words. Maybe you can find something interesting. There used to be a very informative site - fqresearch.org - but it has been closed. I don´t know why. You can find lots of information and patient stories at fqvictims.org. Maybe you have read patient stories at askapatient.com. You can also google the name "David T. Fuller". All quinolones have similar side effects. I also read an interesting book - Bitter Pills - by Stephen Fried. It was written several years ago and it described what happened to his wife who was given a quinolone antibiotic. She got eye problems - and a lot of others as well. I am not in the medical field, but I hope this can be of some help. Good luck.

Swedish - All quinolones (fluoroquinolones) have similar side effects. If you have reacted badly to one avoid taking another one in the same group unless it`s absolutely necessary. The fluoroquinolones have brand names such as = Cipro, Levaquin, Tequin, Maxaquin, Avelox, Factive, Floxin, Noroxin, Penetrex and Zagam, but also other antibiotics that contain the words "flox" or "ox" in the generic name, such as ciprofloxacin, levafloxacin and gatifloxacin. Some ophthalmic and otic (ear) drops solutions contain fluoroquinolones such as: Chibroxin(norfloxacin), Ocuflox(ofloxacin), Quixin(levofloxacin), Zymar(gatifloxacin), Ciloxan(ciprofloxacin), Floxin Otic (ofloxacin), Cipro Otic (ciprofloxacin), Vigamox(moxifloxacin), CiproHC. I would recommend you to also "research" Cipro (ciprofloxacin) and Levaquin. I know there are many stories at this site and askapatient.com.
