Boniva and High Cholesterol
Posted over a year ago
I read that Boniva negatively affects cholesterol levels, has anyone had this experience? My cholesterol skyrocketed after starting Boniva.
Glendaroberts - My blood levels and including my chol, trig, HDL, LDL were always normal. This past year I started on Boniva. My chol level jumped 60 points and my LDL and HDL are also abnormal. My MD wants to repeat chol levels in 6mo. and if levels don't come down he wants to start me on cholesterol meds. Why take a new med for a problem caused by another med? I am a nurse and have been taking meds for osteoporosis for the last 8 yrs., Miacalcin, Actonel and now Boniva. Nothing has improved my T scores. I am beginning to wonder if these meds really do work, and are the side efffects worth it?
Dross0927 - Very interesting-my chol level also jumped 60 points after starting Boniva. I really don't want to start another med, especially if it's to combat a side effect from another drug. Thanks for the feedback.
Worrimom - I have been taking Boniva for about three years and my cholesterol values have been steadily rising. My LDL has been increasing and my HDL is going down. I was on Fosamax before and was not aware of an increase in Cholesterol during that time. Because I also stopped takiing Premarin around the same time I am not sure what is causing the rise in cholesterol values but am somewhat suspicious of the Boniva.
Lwharton - I have been on Boniva for several years, but only just had my cholesterol checked (last lab was in '02). My cholesterol is 338 as compared to 160 in 2002. There have been no lifestyle changes. Weight is the same; exercise level has increased, if anything. I am going off the Boniva because I haven't seen any real benefit. Would love to hear back from anyone having this same effect.
Lwharton - Just as a follow-up to prior message dated 5/20/09. Stopped taking Boniva and my cholesterol dropped to 258.
Rmurphy - Now I am feeling a little better knowing others have had an increase in their cholesterol level after taking Boniva. I was told when I had a bone exam this year that I am stable based on an exam taken two years ago. That exam was the good news. The cholesteral test was not. I refuse to take cholesteral medication due to Boniva.
Polly7 - In March 2009 my total cholesterol level was 229. In March 2010 my total cholesterol was 283, after receiving three Boniva injections over the course of that year. Due to side effects of Boniva, I had already made the decision to stop that treatment several months ago. I was wondering the same thing, "Does Boniva cause the cholesterol to increase"?
Hough28 - I have been taking Boniva for several years but only became completely compliant in the past year. My cholesterol has shot up with everything else being normal...no weight game, run regularly, eat low fat, etc, etc. Is there any place to confirm this, besides our anecdotal information, so that I can talk to my doctor about this with facts?
Lmoser - I started boniva a year ago and my cholesterol was 190. After losing 50 lb and exercising daily, my cholesterol rose 70 points. You can imagine my frustration after eating healthy and exercising daily and to found out my cholesterol is at 259! I'm off Boniva...
Nleaberry - I started taking Boniva (monthly) about 8 months ago for Osteopenia. My cholesterol level was 174 in May 2010 and was 214 recently. I was shocked to say the least as I am not overweight and eat fairly good. I'm thinking it is the Boniva as I do take a thyroid pill daily but have never had any problems with that. I see my Gyno this month and am considering going off it.
