I am a 49 year old female I took Cymbalta for 3 days and on the 4th morning I woke up with severe blurred vision and roaring in my ears that was April 26,2008. My ears are still ringing. I clenched my teeth so hard in my sleep I traumatized one of my upper molars which resulted in a root canal and crown. I have been to a ENT to have my ears checked, he said I had minimal hearing loss and gave me lipo flavonoid to take for the ringing. I just went to a neurologist today who is requesting an MRI on my brain to rule out a tumor. I don't know if this is a coincidence or not ,I know the clenching caused the damage to my tooth. The neurologist said ringing in the ears is not a side effect of Cymbalta. My life has been a nightmare since I took it.

Akoski - Interesting..,I'm realizing now my ear problems started not long after starting Cymbalta 1-1/2 years ago. I am a 28 y/o female and I've had problems with hearing loss so in loud public places I have a terrible time hearing the person right next to me. THe ENT said my ears are fine, and a hearing test showed the loss in some frequencies. I've tried getting off the med, but whenever I go more than 2 days without it I get the lightheadness and dizziness. I've also had word finding difficulties, a hard time concentrating, fatigue. My psychiatrist says those can be symptoms of depression, but I did not have all those things before taking medication. (I don't like him very much) My initial symptoms were anxiety, lack of interest in doing things, irritability, etc. I hope the hearing thing is not permanent! I'm losing self-confidence because of it...it's hard to carry on a conversation!
Djbishop - Oh my goodness. I find it really hard to believe that the sever ringing and the hearing loss in my ears is not a side effect from taking Cymbalta..... There are so many people complaining of the same symptoms.... It has become a serious issue for me since I started taking the Cymbalta a year ago. I cannot hear so many things that I know my husband is tired of me asking him to repeat himself over and over.... It is so scarey to think about my hearing going completely away.....
Paully99 - My ears too are ringing after taking Cymbalta for 14 days and then stopping the pills 30 days ago...its not right that you take a medication to get better from a problem only to get another permanent problem as well as still having the original problem!!
I'm with Revolerone if this ringing doesn't stop and effects my ability to work and live peacefully l will definately see a lawyer to start a lawsuit against Lilly the company thats making these ear and life wreckers...
Geenza - I'm switching from Cymbalta to Welbutrin and the shift has bn extremely difficult. The 'brain zaps' I would encounter if I missed a day when taking the pill are a constant as I enter into my 2nd week of being off Cymbalta (I went off gradually...every other day for a week, then one every three day, then I stopped it an started Welbutrin daily). In addition to the brain zaps, I now have a constant ringing in my brain...much louder than when I was taking Cymbalta.
Although I take comfort in knowing that im not alone, I wonder how long this will last. [sigh] It's enough to drive me batty at times.
Steve757 - I had a very scary response to my trial run of Cymabalta (the way they market it, it's gods gift to earth). I had the sound in my ears. It wasn't ringing. It was a "tss, tss..) type of sound.
Now getting off my Lexapro could have caused those weird brain zaps too.
So, I'm not sure if it was the tapering off of the Lexapro, or the Cymbalta.
Anyone else had those sounds?
It scared me to the point of tears.
Susanlynn - I have the tss, tss in my left ear all the time now. I've been taking Cymbalta for a little over 2 years. About 3 months ago I went totally deaf in my left ear (sudden hearing loss). I've had an MRI, MRA, blood tests for lyme disease, and the ENT can find no reason why I suddenly lost my hearing. Now that I am reading this, I'm wondering if the Cymbalta is the cause. I decided to google Cymbalta and sudden hearing loss and was amazed to see that it has happened, though in a very small percentage. I am now scheduled to have a BAHA hearing aid put in. My fear is losing my hearing the same way in my right ear. I think I'd better go off Cymbalta just to be on the safe side. I just need to know the best way to do it.

I've been on Cymbalta for 3 yrs. I started weaning (once every other day) due to the price and being laid off with no insurance and I had the TSS TSS sound in my ears when I DIDN'T take the Cymbalta.....
It would be very noticeable when I moved my head. Have you or any one else found out what causes this?
I know for certain that in my case it is not the Cymbalta, since it stops once I take my dose correctly.

Geenza - Hi everyone. Going off Cymbalta? Do it per your doctor's instructions. DO NOT do it alone. I experienced, with my md in the know, multiple side effects while doing weaning off...EXTREME brain zaps, white noise worsened (and has nvr gotten btr, mind u) & my mood was altered. I've bn off for months and am now seeing a neurologist and neuro-surgeon for the original back pain AND I'm headed to Joplin for more intensive ear testing as my hearing has diminished and the 'white noise' is extreme. 8( I will report that my MRI findings entailed that I have a 'perfect' brain. [sigh] Nice to know...BUT!!! grrr I'll report bk once I know more about my ears.

Susanlynn - Is there a smaller dose than 30 mg. ? Luckily that's the highest I've been on (for depression after my husband died). Going deaf in one ear is bad enough - I can put up with the withdrawal so I don't risk my other ear losing my hearing or I'll have to learn sign language. I'm seeing my doctor next week to see the best way to wean off it, though my guess is the pharmacist probably knows better. I started taking one every other day. Wish me luck.
Pattiechurch - I have the same noise in my ears-left one is the worst! I know it's the Cymbalta but how can I prove it?

Pattiechurch - Has anyone heard anymore info on this awful ringing in the ears from the Cymbalta ever going away? It has been almost 3 years now and it has NOT gotten better and doctors are like--nothing we can do-just have to learn to ignor it.
Californiagirl562 - I take Cymbalta also, can't wait to see my doc on Tuesday and wein myself off it . what scares me is. I have heard of people wakding up and total no hearing. One woman had a bug in her ear.
I usually know what to do about everying. But would would I do to let people know I can't hear until its resolved. I am going to get an amplified phone. But if hearing is totally gone , how do I answer my phone? My first contact would be my developmentally disabled to pass the word. All I have been through and this really gets me.. Leucismomm - LEUCISMOMM-Thank you everyone for sharing...nice to know I'm not that crazy!! All of these comments are exactly what I've been thru. It is a living Hell to try and get off Cymbalta, but now I'm really fed up and terrified that these side effects won't go away! None of the doctors seem to know/acknowledge the side effects, (the people we trust w our lives!). I would love to learn of a class action, since I have suffered through alot w this Rx, Lexapro, and Lamictal.
The Lamictal is horrible, both on and coming off. Lost my job d/t side effects of meds, Has anyone else experienced this? I think I was on too high a dose (Lexapro, Lamictal, Wellbutrin, and Trazadone). Very scary-had alot of confusion, short term memory loss, no sleep and/or grogginess (w Traz), just unbelievably stupid mistakes-like I was sleepwalking, sweating all the time, teeth grijnding (another expensive side effect they deny) and hearing problems as well.
Although I was never informed about FMLA until my psychiatrist finally told me and then when I took a week off, he practically begged me to return, then they retaliated by trying to set me up for failure (I have witnesses). All illegal, but I can't afford a lawyer.
I describe the hearing prob as maracas when I move my head, as well as the high pitched squeal occasionally and tshsh white noise constantly. I'm scared about the fact more than one person is having hearing loss worst on the Left side, that's what I have...there must be some connection-is it brain damage? I'm going to contact NAMI for info.
I had a terrible time coming off Lamictal too. Since I lost my insurance, couldn't afford COBRA, and wasn't eligible for Medicaid dt my age, I ran out a few times. Please don't start either one!!! Ask for something else, there are alot of others out there!
Also has anyone heard or tried the supplement for depression called L-methylfolate (Deplin)? Does it help?
