I am a 60 year old male. Recently I had a life threatening failure of my liver from the 6 year use of Elmiron. Liver enzyme levels should be in the very low double digit numbers. My enzymes were 700 to 900. I also had a high Lipase level in my Pancreas. I was in excruciating abdominal pain through my entire abdomen. I went to the ER and was told that my situation was very unusual with numbers that high in the liver. Also, my blood platelet level had dropped to 69, with great risk for internal bleeding. My spleen was enlarged due to the liver being clogged by the Elmiron. I was given antibiotics and treated with a week of IV fluids which miraculously brought the enzyme levels down to normal after a week. The Platelet count has improved, but is not much above low normal. The spleen is still slightly enlarged. In the past I had felt at times that the Elmiron was making my Interstitial cystitis worse. When I would cut back a little my symptoms would improve slightly. I was told by my Gastroenterologist, a Hospitalist MD, and a Hematologist that Elmiron was the cause of my near complete liver failure. I am no longer taking it and don't have any worse symptoms of IC than when taking it. I would recommend anyone taking it to have their liver function checked immediately, because your liver can fail quite rapidly using Elmiron. I was also having some severe unexplained headaches. It appears to me that the drug of choice for IC (Elmiron) just might be the last drug you will ever take for the condition. Please be ware of it's side effects and certainly be tested regularly while taking it for potential liver problems.
