Have taken it for a few years for high cholesterol in spite of thyroid nodules and an under active thyroid. I got depressed, gained weight like I never have before,
became apathetic, got tendon and joint problems, occasional dizziness etc. When I asked my physician about it (specialist in thyroid diseases), he asked how old I was. When he heard I was 65, he told me to enjoy life., and to continue taking Lipitor. He seemed to be obsessive about weighting me though.
I went to see a rheumatic specialist at M. for my bone problems (tendons), and was told it was due to having painted a ceiling.
After my thyroid specialist told my I probably had Pagets disease of the bone , an aggressive bone disease, I got scared, looked for and I found another physician (not an easy task in Montreal). I told him that I wanted to stop taking Lipitor (since I had read that one should not take Lipitor if one had thyroid problems). He did not think it was a good idea but halved the dosage after I told him I was unwilling to take chemicals for the rest of my life. He wanted to see me three month later. I then took 5 mg per day for 3 months, had a blood test done and went back to him. He now told me to get off the Lipitor altogether. My cholesterol was normal, and my solid nodule had not grown, but shrunk. I then went to my appoint with my surgeon (who
supervises the nodule that may be or become cancerous). He got upset when he saw my good values from the blood test and wanted to know who had prescribed Lipitor in the first place. I am about to have another blood test and go back to my relatively new doctor. I will, but am not in a rush. I feel better than I have for years. In fact, I feel great. I am not depressed, not tired or apathetic, I have lost weight without trying, the diarrhea is gone, no joint or tendon problems, and I don't have to see the surgeon for another year (rather than every 6 month.
