My main problem with Lisinopril is the coughing. Coughing, coughing. coughing. I will be fine for 2 to 3 hours and then start with this awful cough. People will actually turn away from me if I am out shopping and a cough begins. I presume they believe it is contagious. Sometimes I end up vomiting and I cannot catch my breath. Coughing at night is really a problem because of lack of sleep. Doctors believe my cough is due to allergies because I have post nasal drip. However, none of the medications they have given me stop the coughing. I never had this problem until I began taking Lisinopril. Lisinopril is my first Blood Pressure medication.
Janeto - I am having the same exact problem. My Dr. changed the script yesterday.
Evidently Lisinopril is the only high blood pressure med that does this.
I have spent a fortune on other Dr. visit's and meds to relieve the cough,
I read an article in a magazine by chance of this side effect of Lisinopril.
"I feel your pain" as I have been living it! Hopefully, now that I am off the Lisinopril, life will get back to normal.
Carol_in_pittsburgh - I came across this post by doing a search on google for chronic post nasal drip and cough. Your symptoms are exactly mine. I went to an ENT who when I asked if Lisinopril could be causing the cough w/postnasal drip said that Lisinopril causes a dry cough not a productive cough. I've been hacking for 4 mos. now. It all started a week after I started the Lisinopril. I've taken Claritin, Allegra D, nothing helps. Do either of you have post nasal drip as a symptom not relieved by medications? I am beside myself here not knowing what could be causing this. Sidneyworm - I also have the same problem. I was on 5mg (for 1 month) - no worries, doc put me up to 10mg, started with the cough, dry, almost gagging sometimes as there is nothing to cough, sleepless nights etc. Told GP, lowered me back to 5mg, cough stopped for 2 weeks and has been back relentlessly now for 6 weeks. GP says cannot be 5mg as it didn't affect me before - but only took for a month! GP says not medicine - don't smoke - no allergies - just sick of coughing, gagging to almost vomiting. I think the med causes nasal drip too, only had this since taking meds. How come GPs don't listen?
Susan1234 - My goodness everything youve written is me ! I was treated for post nasal drip, then had asthma tests and anow am waiting to see a consultant. My cough is the same, im fine for hours and then it starts and when it starts it make me wretch and gag and i cant breath after,my eyes fill with water adn my nose too. This has been going on since xmas. The cough all comes from my high bronchila tubes like in my gullet not my lungs oh and ive had a lung xray and thats clear. Same as you in the shops and on the plane people look as if oh heck whats she got? every night around 4 it starts up and messes up my sleep.....mine seems to start up in hsops and in the car, with change of air. I ve been on lisinopril 6 months.
Jlowen - I had similar symptoms. I started with 5mg of Lisinopril and because I had lost weight, reduced sodium and increased activity levels, the dose was dropped to 2.5mg. A few weeks after this, I began coughing. At first I thought it was allergies since I generally get a cough in spring and fall. The cough persisted longer than it normally does and the tickle in the throat was different than what I was used to with allergies. I visited my doctor and his immediate reaction was to change the medication. He told me that about 20% of patients experience the cough side effect. I have been taking Diovan (an ARB) for a week now and the cough and tickle have disappeared. And yes, I had post nasal drip which is also gone now.
Jason9945 - I have been taking lisinoprol for about two months and have experienced a constant dry cough nasal drip and heavy sweating. It has lowered by blood pressure which was mildly high but i am not going to take it anymore because of these side effects
Shanette43 - I also have a major cough which occurs intermittently throughout the day and night. I tend to gag, sometimes vomit and have become incontinent when the cough continues for a while. I have been given cough medicine and antibiotices but it continues. I have been taking lisinopril for about 7 or 8 weeks. My primary care physician has not considered the medication as a possible contributing factor.

Meena_mohan - I also have very similar side effects caughing for a long time which could not be controlled that ends on vomiting. I did not realize this is due to the side effects of taking Lisinopril. When I searched in google today, I found taking this medicine is causing such a kind of problems. I consulted the doctor twice for the caugh and sinus problems I have for the past 3 months. When dr checked he said everything is okay. I planned to cobsult him this week but after seeing this web site, I shold ask him to prescribe different medicine. I have been taking this medicine for the past 3 months.
Crhern59 - I have the same problem and was told the same thing about my sinus drip. I finally called my doctor and he changed it to Atacand. Now I need to know how long it will take for my coughing to end.
Caretaker1 - My mother was taking lisinopril 10 mg for years and there was never a problem. Suddenly the doctor changed the dose to 20 mg. We noticed that once she caught a cold the coughing began and didn't stop. She would cough for weeks at a time. The last time I took her to the doctor, she had a cold, he switched her medication, stating lisinopril has this side effect. I thought he was a quack but allowed him to change it any way. she got better, the cough went a way. She developed another cold and simultaneously ran out of the new HBP medicine cozaar. I gave her some of the lisinopril saturday morning and sunday morning. Needless to say, it's the lisinopril. She is coughing so much I resorted to finding my own cure on the internet. Thanks for your input everyone.
Limthomp - I am so glad I found this site. I am a non-smoker and no history of asmthma. For the past 3 years have not even had a sniffle. Three weeks ago my Dr switched me to lisinopril because it cost 4 dollars at wal-mart.
Be careful what you ask for.
After a day of taking the medication, I started having cold/sinus issues then 4 days later developed uncontrollable cough that started out as a tickle at the back of my throat on the left or right side. The coughing episodes lasted 15 to 20 minute when they happened with gagging turning into vomiting and incontenence.
I was prescibed mediation for acute bronchitis because my chest -xray showed no pneumonia. I have been on antibiotics, advair, zyrtec, singulair, methylpredosone, Musinex DM, cough syrup with codene.
I have talked to a friend and family member that had the same affects from Linisopril. It has been a week that I have been off the drug but I'm waiting for the gut wrenching coughing to stop. I have had two episodes today.

Mcz76 - I also took lisinopril. When I got my prescription the literature that the pharmacist gave me said one of the side effects was coughing. I had no idea that it would be so bad. I also have post-nasal drip. I quit taking lisinopril and hope that the cough will go away. I also take Coreg for high blood pressure so I hope that will be enough to control it.
Sandyrose77 - I was put on lisinopril in jan 2009 I* had a cough though it was my sinus my doctor told me could be side affect but would not switch me after 6 long months and not being able to talk on phone longer then 10 minutes.with out coughing finally straw was having a yard sale and couldnt talk with out coughing and tickle in my thorat I went off the medience 5 days ago I can talk for a hours now the tickle is gone . and cough is going away and my blood pressure is normal And I feel so much better !!

Crysus - Unbelievable!!! I've been plagued with a dry tickle cough that comes on like a Hurricane and can progress to gagging, vomiting and occasional incontinence. My family was beginning to really worry (my Mom died of cigarette related Lung Cancer). But we were renovating the house, lots of concrete dust, rugs pulled out and painting. The paint fumes gave me what the doctors call Chemically induced broncitus. I was very sick during this time but got well again. Meanwhile a month or so prior I started on lisinopril. Since it was spring, I assumed I was having allergies to whatever, or allergies to dust or the chemicals/building materials used to renovate. Well now that summer is creeping into August and the house is done and the sun and heat have scorched every living thing outside, I am still hacking a non-productive cough. While looking at Post nasal drip on Google, I found several references to lisinopril and here I am. Disgusted. Because the doctor did not discuss the side effects of this. The literature that came with it said, Oh yeah there might be a cough as a side effect. I didn't make the connection with the gawd awful cough I was experiencing to the Oh yeah, there might be a cough as a side effect.
I will try the aspirin 20 min before taking it before I decide to see my doctor about it. He's the same doctor who prescribed a statin for me that eventually rendered me unable to walk up a flight of stairs or open a bottle of water (I'm 55 and am an ex-2nd Degree Black Belt!!) and didn't quite believe me when I described the incredible weakness and the fact that I weaned myself off the crap without his input..... he didn't like that at all. I only found out about the muscle interaction by accident or I'd still be on the statins and a permanent cripple by now.
I'm fed up. I'm also in the market for a new Doctor.
Mammamia - Thank you, thank you guys! I am going insane with the cough, started 2 month ago, the same time I started the medicine. Could you guys tell me how long will it take for the cough to stop after I stopped this "medicine"?
Mamameow8 - thank you thank you. i have been taking this d___ bp prescription since 1/07. i developed the cough about a month later. we use chemicals in my day spa and thought i must have hurt my lungs by breathing in the fumes. i went to england and scotland with new boyfriend and coughed and hacked my across the land. my hosts thought i was really ill. my son also takes this prescription and has the same symptoms, blames it on allergies. this is stopping today and i am seeing a new doctor this week.
Vonnetta - wow, I am so suprised to read ALL of this, I have had a horriable cough for the past four months...to the point my co-workers started complaining. Sometimes, I try to leave office and go to bathroom to shake cough and BEFORE i know it I am throwing up!!! Finally, after much complaining from co-workers I make an appt at doc (a new doc cuz my regualr doc is out of town) and he tells me its my NEW MEDICAITON!!! WHAT? I really didnt even beleive him...but, after reading this...wow...why didnt the doc who gave it to me mention this side effect. AND IT ALWAYS starts with the tickle, I was soooooooo scared it was something else.
Coffinjim - Again Google saves the day.After finding this site and reading these posts I'm through with doctors... period. I have had this cough for five days now but the post nasal drip and sore throat started a week ago. This cough is will not stop. Nothing relieves it. hacking in the middle of the night, sweats...just to lower my blood pressure?? Bull S---t
Roseh1969 - OMG..... I have had this cough for 7 months now and I also have a dry, tickle in my throat and I have a nasal drip too along with it but my main concern is my COUGHING. I can't go out to eat because I start coughing so much that it makes me vomit and I loose my appetite. I am so tire of this. I am going to go see my Dr. and let her know it's time to change medication for th BP.
Amastne - I went to the doctor for a refill on my blood pressure meds. He said he wanted to add Lisinopril 10 mg. He did warn me as did the pharmacist that I MAY experience a little dry cough. What I got was no little dry cough. I cough so hard that I need to vomit. My eye water to the point of crying. I wake 3-4 times during the night so sleep is out of the question. One thing helps a little. I keep a bottle of water near my bed and when I feel it start I take a drink. Sometimes that helps for a while..
Bailyboop - I hate this freakin medicine. I only took it for 7 days...and have been off for 3 days now and the cough is still here! The Dr. said it would take a few days. Ok, the few days are up. I can't handle this anymore. I don't eat, I can't sleep and I vomit on average of 3 times a day. I'm afraid to fall asleep knowing that the cough will start in just a few minutes, of course right after I fall asleep. I've tried sleeping upright, but that's a joke too! I think the neighbors that live below me are fed up with the gagging/vomiting noise! I was always paranoid my 3 yr old running around would irritate them, but this cough is worse. I know my husband gags when he hears me cough really bad knowing it will lead to vomiting....I can only imagine how it sounds to them at all hours of the day and night.
I'm now on Diovan...we'll see how that goes.
PS, stay away from Dairy while coughing...it make is so much worse!

Candyjlady64018 - Thank you...thank you... thank you. I reeeeally was beginning to think I had something seriously wrong. I have been on Lisinopril for quite a while, but my dosage was upped last year. After a respiratory infection last Sept., I never totally stopped coughing. Post-nasal drip,coughing to the point of vomiting, gagging, eyes tearing and sneezing. Allergist thought it was allergies. I have gone through soooo many meds and stopped them AND the cough is still here. I can go for a few hrs and not cough, then it starts and goes on an on. Didn't think I would be able to remain in Church yesterday due to coughing. Cough during the night. Affects sleep. My allergist actually told me just this weekend that he thinks I should call my PCP and get off this medication. I googled this topic just now and found this wealth of information. I am calling my PCP as soon as I get off here. Peace & Blessings to all of you.
Crogers66039 - Lisinipril like all other pril's come from a pit viper from south america called the cararaca pit viper. You will get very bad cough! you will have tyroid problems down the road! You will develop forms of sleep apnea! You wiill have swelling of throat and tongue! You will have diaphram muscle spasm. and if you take a statin for colesterol< lord help you. You will need it just to walk up stairs.....GET OFF STATINS ASAP. THEY WILL TAKE AWAY WHAT LIFE YOU HAVE..
Sallymae1 - I have been taking this medicine off and on. One day my pressure was up and I took the hbm and the coughing started. I think it took a BPP 3 days in a row and stopped. I did not realize it was the medicine. I coughed, vomitted, gagged, and was almost completely out of breath. I tried my inhaler but that did not work, so I put up with this cough until it was gone. I guess long that is when the meds are out of your system. I wen to the Dr. 4 days ago and the nurse said I cant stand lisinopril,doesnt it give you a constant cough. I said no becuase I did not link the two. Well let me tell you. 4 days ago due to BP being high I took another darn pill and have had this iritating hacking cough that is driving me nuts. I will not take this med again becuase I believe with all this coughing it can really cause heart trouble.
Alwaysaoptimist - I had my doctor change my meds from Diovan to Lisinopril because of the cost of Diovan. OMG, I took it for 1 month and started this horrible nasel drip, tickle in my throat and major coughing. I would cough so hard that i would almost vomit. I have not slept at night much for almost 2 months. I went to my doctor and he gave me a steroid shot and said I had allergies. Well, the shot did not help at all. I have spent a fortune on Benidryl, Coricidin Hbpm NightQoil, and the list goes on. None of it really helped except to help me sleep a few hrs. I finally found this site on the computer. I called my doctor and he took me off Lisinopril . I have been off for 5 days now. I am a little better but still have some bad coughing. The nasel drip is gone and most of the dry ticlkel in my throat. Can anyone tell me how long it will take to get rid of the terrible cough. This has been a nightmare. I will never take another ACE bp medicine( Lisinopril).. EVER!!!!
Jruffino - I have been on Lisinopril for months. I began the coughing about a month ago. I also spent a fortune on cold remedies, but with no avail. I also had the hacking cough, to the point of vomiting. The people at work were convinced I had TB, and did not get close to me. I saw the Dr. today & she told me the cough was due to the lisinopril. She took me off of it today & RX something else. I hope the cough goes away soon. Does anyone else have heavy sweating in the back of their neck?
Schos - I have been on Lisinopril since fall of 09" and for all of this spring I have been coughing alot, sometimes uncontrollably. I went to the hospital and they took and X-ray of my chest. When they couldn't find anything wrong they told me that I had bronchitus and sinusitus. The gave me an albuteral inhaler, prednisone, and nasonex. None of this has helped me, to get better. I bought a air purifier and a humidifier. Many decogestents as well as cough syrups, this was all to no avail. After another trip to the doctors I am now on Augmentin because the doc said that I am no longer contagious and this must be viral now. The coughing comes and goes but is getting worse, and have just made another appointment with doc to remove me from this AWEFUL Drug.
Grasshopper94 - I too have been coughing for months, apparently due to the Lisinopril I was taking. Went to the dr. several times about the cough, was given Nasonex, Musinex DM, etc. He said it must be allergies, then sent me for a chest x-ray, then I was told it wasn't allergies, that I seemed to be breathing something that was causing the cough. My friend finally told me that Lisinopril causes cough & that she has mucus in her throat, just a bit that she can't get rid of. So I asked the dr. to change my BP med. I'm on Diovan, have been for about 9 days & still having the dry cough & watery eyes, always on one side! I'm glad to know that it will eventually go away. Meanwhile, cough drops do help. I sleep with one in the side of my mouth, usually. or I wouldn't get any sleep!
Looloobell - DO NOT TAKE ASPRIN..I heard one person say if you take 1 asprin you will not cough, well no shit...Apsrin counteracts with the lisinopril causing it to less effective...If he was good at what he did, he would have known that, haha what a great pharmasist...If you are taking Asprin, you might as well just stop taking the medicine for bp just a waste of money for you...
Splatty - I was perscribed this medicine about two weeks ago 10mg. After a few days I got the tickle and the cough and I cant really get up and do anything. I tried half a pill or a third of a pill and the dizziness and weakness is less but I still have this hack and tickling that I've never had before. I don't smoke and my BP isn't that high to think I have cancer or TB over this. Glad I read this today.

Mpbean70 - This happens to me too! I take lisinopril for my high blood pressure and have symptoms of coughing and gagging. Wow! Didn't know about the aspirin and lisinopril contraindication. I will stop taking aspirin. Does anyone know what one can take in place of these high blood pressure pills with the side effects?
Emjackdad - I have been taking Lisinopril for a little over a month. Liked it OK because it didn't make me feel drowsy like my first BP med. Atenolol. Didn't have much of a cough until I caught a cold. Now I cough so hard I am afraid I'll burst a blood vessel! My co-worker just loves it too. I was going to see if it would go away with a little more time, but this information made up my mind. I have already called my Dr. for a change. Thanks everyone!
Ellaime - because dr don't try every medecine we are the guinea pigs to the profit of pharmaceuical cie and after 10 years of complains this medication will be out of the market while the pharmacists made millions of dollars on your back and damaging your health hay all are crooks
Sherm - I am so glad that I found this website. I was beginning to panic and feel like something was horribly wrong with me. I started taking Lisinopril on October 20. Here we are on December 31st and my doctor changed my medication today. I have been to the ENT, allergict, family doctor and I have been on a cart full of allergy meds and cough meds. NOTHING has made it better. I have had uncontrolable coughing. Not minor coughing but gut wrenching coughing to the point of peeing my pants and vomitting. I throw up all the time. My eyes water that the phlegm. :/ I have so much post nasal drip that most of what I throw up is snot. I haven't slept a full night since before Thanksgiving. I sleep sitting up on the couch hoping that will help. Much luck to all my fellow coughers out there.
Deshon31 - I STARTED TAKING LISINOPRIL AUGUST 2009 10 MG I WAS TOTALY FINE. THEN ONE OF MY DOCTORS RAISED TO 20MG I THINK I WAS FINE.
SAME DOCTOR RAISED TO 40MG WAS OK FOR A WHILE. ON OCT 09 FELT A TICKLE IN MY THROAT, STARTED AS IF I HAD TO CLEAR MY THROAT ALL THE TIME. NEXT THE THROAT CLEARING STARTED WHEN I WAS SLEEP WAS HAVING TO CLEAR. THOUGHT IT WAS SERIOUS ALLERGIES I HAVE SINUS PROBLEMS AS WELL. NEXT IT WENT FROM CLEARING TO A SLIGHT COUGH AND I DO SMOKE SO I THOUGHT IT WAS TIME TO QUIT. HAVE QUIT SMOKING (THE ONLY GOOD THAT HAS CAME OUT OF TAKING LISINOPRIL) STILL HAVE THE SAME COUGH EXCEPT IT HAS GOTTON WORSE. I HAVE TO SLEEP WITH WATER BY MY BED AT ALL TIMES. I AM COUGHING IN PUBLIC (VERY EMBARRASING) IM IN HEALTHCARE SO EVEN MORE EMBARRASING WHEN IM WITH A PATIENT OR HAVING TO HAVE WATER NEAR BY AT ALL TIMES. NOW THE COUGH IS SOOOO BAD NOW UNTIL I COUGH AND SWEAT ALL NIGHT AND THE WATER JUST MAKES ME GET UP AND USE THE BATHROOM ALLLLL NIGHT SO SLEEP HAS BEEN OUT OF THE QUESTION LATELY. I ALWAYS KNEW ABOUT THE LISINOPRIL SYMPTOM BUT THOUGHT THE PROS WOULD WAY OUT THE CONS BUT NEVER KNEW IN A MILLON YEARS THE COUGH WOULD BE THIS BAD AS OF TONIGHT I WILL NOT BE TAKING THE MEDICATION ANY MORE TONIGHT WAS THE WORST EPISODE MY CHEST AND THROAT FEELS RAW FROM THE COUGHING IM UP AT THREE IN THE MORNING CUZ I CANT SLEEP. Samiam10 - This is crazy reading how everyone has become sick off of the bp meds. I started on Lisinopril 12.5 mg on Monday. By Tuesday noticed a dry throat. Got worse and luckily there was a warning on the pharmacy bottle. So I stopped taking it within days. Now feel that I can't breathe as well as the unproductive cough. Had to miss my second day of student teaching over this! Plus my head is so dizzy. I am hoping this clears up in a few days. I thought I must have developed a severe chest cold...but I believe it is just the meds. I don't think they should prescribe this anymore. It's not just a little dry cough at all when it keeps people awake, makes them miss important things such as student teaching and causes vomiting. Geesh. Good luck to all.
Lessdemented - Help! I had been taking Lisinopril for 6 months with no problems, but my blood pressure still was not down. The doctor doubled the dose last June, and the coughing started immediately. In July I went in to get the cough taken care of and was assigned an ENT doctor who did not know me. She didn't think it was from the Lisinpril. She gave me medicine for nasal drip and told me to come back in a month if I wasn't feeling better. The coughing didn't go away, so I went back in and she said she thought it was GERD and gave me medication for it and AGAIN told me to come back in a month if I wasn't feeling better. I wasn't, so I went back. Then they all thought I had ashma and gave me two kinds of inhalers. Neither one worked. Finally, it was October, and got confirmation from a cardiologist that it was definitely the Lisinopril. The problem is, the coughing STILL has not stopped. I called my regular doctor about it and she said it could take up to 7 MONTHS for the coughing to subside. In the meantime I am exhausted from lack of sleep and have not had much of a social life. And I am angry at the doctors for putting me through all this crap. If they had just gotten it right in July, I would have been spared all these months of agony!!!

Magoo0510 - I started taking Lisinopril a month ago, and was just getting over a bad cough and cold my cough changed from a chesty one to a dry tickley one. The main problem I have is I have a condition called sleep apnea for which I am supposed to wear a mask when sleeping. This is good until I start coughing and literally cant breath until I get the mask off. My doctor told me I may get a slight dry cough with lisinopril and he wasnt wrong. Thanks for the info everyone. Im going to ask to change back to my original medication.
Sylvie 68 - This is so crazy. I thought I was awfully sick!! I started taking lisinopril 10 mg about a month 5days ago. I recently started to have this horrible tickle in my throat gut wrenching cough and vomit. Incontinence to add insult to injury! I just started taking classes at a university I feel mortified when I feel the tickle come on. everything I have read is exzactly what I have been feeling. Thanks for sharing this I am now off of lisinopril and cant wait for symptoms to go away! We blamed our poor cats for this thinking it was allergy based.
Lrasal - I started Lisinopril and within a few days the tickle and horrible dry cough started, I went back to my Dr, and I had developed an Upper Respiratory Infection. She stopped the Lisinopril immediatley and put me on an antibiotic and it didn't work, she gave me cough medicine, no relief. So here I am on my second antibiotic with still no relief. A miserable cough that is only relieved after I vomit, and sleepless nights, and with two little ones I need all the sleep I can get. Oh and not to mention how it is starting to affect my job! And the pain my body is in from all the coughing is not pleasant either. If you are on this medication and start with a dry cough tell your Dr. immediatley, don't hesitate!
Chadd - Lisinopril and other blood pressure medications are dangerous and totally unnecessary. Several studies have proven that vitamin C will lower high blood pressure safely and naturally. Just do a google search for 'vitamin C reduces high blood pressure' and read the articles. Vitamin C was effective even though the studies used a relatively small dose of only 500 mg per day, much less than the 2 or 3 grams per day recommended by Dr. Linus Pauling for cardiovascular disease. Of course, Big Pharma and organized medicine aren't interested in vitamin C at all because it is cheap, unpatentable, and a big financial threat to their high-profit pharmaceutical drugs. Unfortunately, Big Pharma practically 'owns' the FDA, so I doubt they will ever ban this drug no matter how much damage it inflicts on trusting and unsuspecting patients.
