Lisinopril Amlodipine, Hydrochlorothiazide, Blood Pressure, Doctors, Worse Drugs

A few months ago I was prescribed Amlodipine and Lisinopril to control my blood pressure. While I had great results on the blood pressure, I cannot believe how bad I feel. So unmotivated and so achy. So many complaints that I could not even articulate them all, otherwise the doctors would think I was a hypochondriac. My question to all who have suffered, were you taking plain Lisinopril or Lisinopril with Hydrochlorothiazide? Lastly, thanks to all of you for your posts. I thought I was alone in this.

Mrjrs - I too was on this combo of meds in tiny doses. I finally had to leave the amlodipine off and increase the dose of lisinopril slightly (by doc's directions). Hydrochlorothiazide wasn't part of either med and I have never taken it. However, I also have the same lack of energy you are describing on either amlodipine or lisinopril. The combination was unbearable. I still take the tiny dose of lisinopril. It hasn't done anything impressive to my BP, but is the least noxious of the medicines I have taken in the last year, so I am not about to make any waves. There are certainly worse drugs out there with worse side effects. After I got through the first 3 months of rubber legs and pounding heart rate up to 130 every day/all day, I can at least walk around my house and even drive if I leave off two doses before I drive anywhere. Still can't stand to go out in the sun/heat. I've been on this tiny dose for 5 months now and still have the mentality of a piece of driftwood and the mobility of a slug. Exercising takes a major mindset to just go outside and walk a few block and hope I can get back home.

Roseseek - PLEASE research "insufficient metabolizer" and take whatever steps you deem appropriate. My liver tests show my liver is fine and fully functional. Medications have never worked on me the way they should be expected to. My reactions to them are either absolutely nothing, or they are extreme. Insufficient metabolizer is genetic. You inherit it. My mother couldn't drink, and all medications affected her to the extreme. She had to take medications in half the lowest prescribed dose or she would be nearly over dosed. I am the same way, always have been. It takes three fingers of wine in a glass to make me drunk within minutes. I get drunker than anyone else around me and it makes me intensely ill for days. Any kind of pain medication, including Tylenol, makes me extremely, physically ill. Medications metabolized by the liver over medicate me to the point of unconsciousness. OTC anti histamines, except Claritan (which has NO effect on me what so ever), sedate me to days of unconsciousness. It sounds from your post above, you may also be an insufficient metabolizer. PLEASE research it and investigate how it may pertain to you. If you are one, as I am, we are very prone to drug over doses because those filtered through the liver do NOT filter out as we can't metabolize them properly. Good luck!
